The ethics of excess and indian intervention in south asia.Ralph Buultjens - 1989 - Ethics and International Affairs 3:73–100.
India has promoted its power through intervention in neighboring countries under the cloak of morality. The United States, Great Britain, and Russia have nonetheless tacitly endorsed India's role as the policing force in the region. Does this recognition justify India's actions toward its weaker and smaller neighbors?

Most investigations into how people make risky choices have employed a simple drosophila: monetary gambles involving stated outcomes and probabilities. People are asked to make decisions from description . When people decide whether to back up their computer hard drive, cross a busy street, or go out on a date, however, they do not enjoy the convenience of stated outcomes and probabilities. People make such decisions either in the void of ignorance or in the twilight of their own often limited (...)

Anticipating objections as a way of coping with dissensus.Ralph H. Johnson - 2007 - In Christopher W. Tindale Hans V. Hansen (ed.), Dissensus and the Search for Common Ground. OSSA.
One of the traditional ways in which we manage dissensus is by argumentation, which may be construed as the attempt of the proponent to persuade rationally the other party of the truth of some thesis. To achieve this, the arguer will often anticipate a possible objection. In this paper, I attempt to shed light on the normative aspect of the task of anticipating objections. I deal with such questions as: How is the arguer to anticipate objections? Which of the anticipated (...)

More on arguers and their dialectical obligations.Ralph H. Johnson - unknown
In her 1997 OSSA paper, Trudy Govier discusses in detail my thesis that arguers have dialectical obligations. In a 1998 paper she further examines this thesis to see whether it is viable and concludes that it faces serious problems. In this paper, I assess the state of the thesis in light of Govier's discussion of it. I urge that we have something to gain from the empirical turn--from investigating best practices. At the end, I take a step back to ask (...)

Three paradoxes of phenomenal consciousness: Bridging the explanatory gap.Ralph D. Ellis & Natika Newton - 1998 - Journal of Consciousness Studies 5 (4):419-42.
Any physical explanation of consciousness seems to leave unresolved the ‘explanatory gap': Isn't it conceivable that all the elements in that explanation could occur, with the same information processing outcomes as in a conscious process, but in the absence of consciousness? E.g. any digital computational process could occur in the absence of consciousness. To resolve this dilemma, we propose a biological-process-oriented physiological- phenomenological characterization of consciousness that addresses three ‘paradoxical’ qualities seemingly incompatible with the empirical realm: The dual location of (...)

The dance form of the eyes: what cognitive science can learn from art.Ralph D. Ellis - 1999 - Journal of Consciousness Studies 6 (6-7):6-7.
Art perception offers action affordances for the self-generated movement of the eyes, the mind, and the emotions; thus some scenes are ’easy to look at', and evoke different kinds of moods depending on what kind of affordances they present for the eyes, the brain, and the action schemas that further the dynamical self-organizing patterns of activity toward which the organism tends, as reflected in its ongoing emotional life. Art can do this only because perception is active rather than passive, and (...)

The Brain Is Not Enough: Potentials and Limits in Integrating Neuroscience and Pedagogy.Ralph Schumacher - 2007 - Analyse & Kritik 29 (1):38-46.
The desire for founding educational reform on a sound empirical basis has coincided with a period of impressive progress in the field of neuroscience and wide public interest in its findings, leading to an ongoing debate about the potential of neuroscience to inform education reform. But is neuroscience really suited to provide specific instructions for improving learning conditions at school? This paper explores the educational implications of neuroscience.

Enemy of the people: Simmel, Ibsen, and the Civic legacy of Nietzschean sociology.Ralph Leck - 2005 - The European Legacy 10 (3):133-147.
The fall of Communism continued an ongoing weakening of Marxist ideology, which had been hegemonic among the European Left since the Great War. While the decline of Marxist thought can be justly seen negatively as the historical correlative of globalization, this decline has also produced cultural space for a re-evaluation of non-Marxist critiques of capitalist civilization. One example of a powerful non-Marxist critique of capitalist civilization is Georg Simmel's sociology of money culture. Before turning to Simmel's radical critique, this essay (...)

    Coherence and Verification in Ethics.Ralph D. Ellis - 1991 - Upa.
This book is an attempt to come to grips with problems of the epistemological basis of ethical beliefs by building on criticisms of approaches to this problem which have been attempted in the recent past. Because of the extensive discussions and criticism of these various alternatives, the book is useful to all who are concerned with the epistemology of ethics.

Nietzsches Literaturen.Ralph Häfner, Sebastian Kaufmann & Andreas Urs Sommer (eds.)

Ray Jackendoff's phenomenology of language as a refutation of the 'appendage' theory of consciousness.Ralph D. Ellis - 1996 - Pragmatics and Cognition 4 (1):125-137.
Since Jackendoff has shown that language facilitates abstract and complex thought by making possible subtle manipulations of the focus of attention, and since the kind of attention relevant here is attention to aspects of intentional objects in conscious awareness, it follows that the abstract and complex thinking that language facilitates owes much to the working of a conscious process. This, however, conflicts with Jackendoff's view of consciousness as something which does not play a direct part in thinking, but is only (...)

This unique book presents a comprehensive and rigorous treatment of the theory of computability which is introductory yet self-contained. It takes a novel approach by looking at the subject using computation models rather than a limitation orientation, and is the first book of its kind to include software. Accompanying software simulations of almost all computational models are available for use in conjunction with the text, and numerous examples are provided on disk in a user-friendly format. Its applications to computer science (...)

    On completely positive maps in generalized quantum dynamics.Ralph F. Simmons & James L. Park - 1981 - Foundations of Physics 11 (1-2):47-55.
Several authors have hypothesized that completely positive maps should provide the means for generalizing quantum dynamics. In a critical analysis of that proposal, we show that such maps are incompatible with the standard phenomenological theory of spin relaxation and that the theoretical argument which has been offered as justification for the hypothesis is fallacious.
