    본 논문에서는 고유명의 의미론적 지시체가 어떻게 결정되는지를 설명하는 지칭 이론이 기존의 인과적-역사적 지칭 이론의 대안으로서 제안된다. 에반스의 논의를 바탕으로 재구축된 이 대안적 이론에서 중심적인 설명적 역할을 담당하는 것은 이름사용관행이며, 이러한 이론을 ‘이름사용관행 중심 이론’이라고 부를 수 있다. 이름사용관행 중심 이론은 명명식이나 인과적-역사적 연쇄와 같은 요소들에 의존하지 않으며, 이름 사용의 관행에 참여하는 생산자와 소비자에 관한 일군의 사실들을 바탕으로 고유명의 지칭 결정을 설명한다. 이러한 설명의 과정에서 이름사용관행 중심 이론이 인과적-역사적 지칭 이론과 비교할 때 어떤 상대적 장점을 지니는지 역시 설명될 것이다.

    This article presents a selective review of recent design PhDs that identify and analyse the methodological innovation that is occurring in the field, in order to inform future provision of research training. Six recently completed design PhDs are used to highlight possible philosophical and practical models that can be adopted by future PhD students in design.     This paper uses narrative from the social centre movement in the UK to argue that social centres are examples of the MacIntyrean small communities that can virtuously resist the overbearing market influence. Looking at the contrast between rented and squatted centres, the paper argues that those that are squatted are practice-based communities, and those that are rented, are institutions.
