Este artigo pretende apresentar uma discussão sobre a possibilidade de identificarmos as possíveis contribuições das viagens de descobrimento, enfatizando as navegações portuguesas, para a construção do pensamento científico moderno. Por um lado, é analisado o valor da experiência direta valorizada pelos portugueses como critério de certeza acerca das afirmações sobre o mundo geográfico que acabaram por colocar em questão a concepção de mundo difundida a partir dos clássicos antigos – os gregos – e, por outro lado, é apresentado uma concepção (...) de ciência moderna que comporta as contribuições dos chamados homens práticos, como os navegadores, cuja atividade marítima promove um debate, no campo da geografia e cartografia sobre a própria constituição do mundo, sem, contudo, romper definitivamente com a tradição cosmológica. A nossa análise é realizada por meio de uma discussão crítica com a historiografia existente. (shrink)

A ascensão das denominações pentecostais no mercado formal da religiosidade brasileira simboliza uma verdadeira quebra de paradigmas. Da marginalidade, do estigma de “seita” que caracteriza este segmento, passaram a ocupar um plano privilegiado no campo econômico e espiritual. Essa exponencial visibilidade social em detrimento de outras denominações religiosas, sobretudo da católica, baliza o marco contextual dessa pesquisa. Entremeio a uma inusitada percepção espiritual da pós-modernidade, ou simplesmente um mega projeto de marketing, o fato é que os neopentecostais ocupam uma posição (...) de destaque no mercado religioso brasileiro. As novas possibilidades de percepção do sagrado são corolários do espaço urbano. Verdadeira profusão de entendimento e amplitude da realidade faz das concepções explicativas vinculadas ao tradicionalismo religioso uma leitura romântica e inverossímil. Porém, nesse mesmo espaço, enquanto uma minoria declara-se sem religião, uma multidão de pessoas lota os templos pentecostais. Em boa medida, o espaço exerce uma pressão no direcionamento das escolhas individuais, entretanto são as condições socioeconômicas que acabam por representar um dos fatores mais significativos desse processo. From marginality or from the stigma of “sect” that characterizes this segment, they proceeded to occupy a privileged plan in economic and spiritual field. This exponencial social visibility in detriment of other religious denominations, especially the Catholic, guides the contextual landmark of this research. In the middle of an unusual spiritual perception of post modernity, or simply a mega marketing project, the fact is that the neopentecostals occupy a position of prominence in Brazilian religious market. The new possibilities of perception of the sacred are corollaries of urban space. True profusion of understanding and breadth of reality makes the explanatory concepts related to religious traditionalism into a romantic and improbable reading. However, in the same space, while a minority declares itself as no religion, a crowd of people fills the Pentecostal churches. Largely, the space exerts a pressure on the direction of individual choices, but the socioeconomic conditions turns out to be one of the most significant factors in this process. This article proposes to think about the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God religious services offerings from the merger of imaginary features representations of it time and context. From the mystical and religious imagery to the psychoanalytic rationalizing imaginary, the UCKG remain prosperous and professional in provide feedback on the imagination of its customers from the representations present in their own time setting. In a flexible way, the religious services of the UCKG are always in line with the demands of certain social groups, more precisely to those who are more sensitive to the use of the popular imagination outline as a complementary substance in the plausibility of everyday life. Historicamente, as ciências da religião e a teologia construíram itinerários próprios, mas não indiferentes entre si. Ainda que a configuração das ciências da religião na Europa e na América do Norte acentue a sua autonomia, é notório, nos seus primeiros passos, o inevitável encontro com a teologia. No Brasil este encontro estendeu-se em quantidade e qualidade, motivado pela natural proximidade de questões, pelo contexto socioeclesial e, mais recentemente, por razões de ordem epistemológicas, oportunizando o reconhecimento civil público das duas (...) ciências pelos órgãos competentes de governo. Isto significa que a teologia e as ciências da religião estão sob os mesmos deveres e direitos de qualquer outra área de conhecimento. A conquista dessa condição foi marcada por conflitos internos e externos, que foram pouco a pouco dissolvidos por debates carregados de tensão e maturidade, conduzidos com maestria pela vocação interdisciplinar característica das partes. Este artigo aponta momentos importantes da edificação da relação entre as ciências da religião e a teologia; os conflitos, resolvidos, e os que ainda permanecem; alguns desafios e tarefas comuns que visam aprofundar e tornar mais fecunda a relação construída. O presente ensaio parte dos questionamentos construídos por Machado de Assis no artigo “Notícia da atual literatura brasileira: instinto de nacionalidade”, para analisar o lugar que o discurso marginal ocupa na produção literária contemporânea. Nesta perspectiva, utilizando como referência o conceito construído por Machado de Assis, investigo a possibilidade de observarmos a presença de um “Instinto de Marginalidade” na atual literatura brasileira, que não mais se baseia no intuito de formação de uma “literatura nacional”, isto é, unificadora e essencialista, mas (...) como vozes da dissonância e da alteridade. Assim, se o “Instinto de nacionalidade”, detectado por Machado em sua época, serviria a uma busca de independência, não estaríamos igualmente presenciando um ensejo de diferenciação das minorias? E, dessa forma, ainda seguindo os passos do crítico, não correríamos o risco da busca de uma “cor local” que salvaguardaria as fronteiras entre margem e centro? (shrink)

Este texto procura compreender algumas variáveis numéricas expostas pelo último Censo do Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE) referentes à evolução de grupos pentecostais e católicos no território brasileiro. Dando continuidade a reflexões de trabalhos anteriores, concentraremos nossas atenções primordialmente na assimetria quanto à dispersão desses dois grupos religiosos pelo território nacional, enfatizando as conformações sócio-culturais locais imbricadas no binômio crescimento pentecostal / resistência católica. Mais especificamente, analisaremos, de um lado, os fatores que levam uma região a ser uma (...) seara generosa para os pentecostais, ao passo que outras constituem reservas privilegiadas do catolicismo. Paralelamente, pretendemos analisar as possibilidades e os limites dos dados censitários produzidos pelo IBGE, como instrumentos úteis ao estudo da religião no Brasil. Neste ponto, levaremos em conta tanto a construção dos instrumentos de coleta de dados do IBGE – a criação de categorias censitárias para os tipos religiosos – quanto os limites destas categorias face à dinâmica do campo religioso brasileiro. To continue the reflections of previous work, primarily regarding the asymmetry of the spread of these two religious groups throughout the country, we focus our attention particularly on the asymmetry of the spread of these two religious groups throughout the country, we emphasize the socio-cultural local conformations intertwined in the binomial Pentecostal growth / Catholic resistance. More specifically, we analyze the factors that lead some regions to become a receptive space to Pentecostals, while others remain privileged reserves of Catholicism. In parallel, we intend to analyze the possibilities and limitations of census data produced by the IBGE, as useful tools for the study of religion in Brazil. A Segunda Conferência Geral do Episcopado Latino-americano, realizada na cidade de Medellín, entre os dias 24 de agosto e 06 de setembro de 1968, produziu um importante e significativo documento – As Conclusões de Medellín – que registraram as posições da Igreja da América Latina, que assumiu uma posição libertadora frente à opressão no continente. O objetivo do Papa Paulo VI, como diz o próprio título da proposta da Conferência, era ler a realidade latino-americana à luz do Concílio Vaticano (...) II. Os bispos fizeram mais do que isso: leram o Concílio à luz da realidade latino-americana. Nesse contexto, o objetivo deste artigo, a partir de pesquisa bibliográfica, é apresentar alguns elementos da realidade política e eclesial de Medellín e analisar dois aspectos do documento: a educação e a juventude. A década de 1960 e, particularmente o ano de 1968, são momentos históricos efervescentes, contexto da guerra-fria, impactando muitas mudanças. Igreja assume de forma clara o trabalho de inserção nas comunidades pobres. A educação passa a ser pensada numa perspectiva libertadora, há a inserção dos religiosos nas comunidades de base. A juventude católica assume compromissos socais e políticos. Em Medellín ganha identidade própria a Igreja latino-americana e uma forma original de fazer teologia, a teologia da libertação e sua opção pelos pobres. Também o exercício da colegialidade dá passos importantes, inclusive na forma de elaboração do documento. Portanto, celebrar 50 anos desse documento deve levar o olhar crítico para seus valores e limitações e recuperar seus avanços, contribuindo para o debate no campo das Ciências da Religião. (shrink)

It is evident that the Apostle (...) had a awareness of the prophetic character of his person, mission and message. It is called and sent directly by God, records the Scripture inspired by the Spirit and has a fruitful ministry of preaching and teaching. Este artigo tem como objetivo mostrar que embora o apóstolo Paulo não chame a si mesmo de profeta, ainda assim faz sua apresentação em suas cartas nos mesmos moldes que os profetas do Antigo Testamento. O artigo aponta as várias semelhanças entre Paulo e os profetas. Procura-se fazer uma análise e interação com a Escritura bem como literatura pertinente ao tema. Conclui-se que o Apóstolo fundamenta a autoridade de seu chamado, destacando o aspecto profético de seu apostolado. Evidencia-se que o Apóstolo possuía uma consciência do caráter profético de sua pessoa, missão e mensagem. É chamado e enviado diretamente por Deus, registra a Escritura de maneira inspirada pelo Espírito e tem um profícuo ministério de pregação e ensino. (shrink)

Social animals need to share space and resources, whether sexual partners, parents, or food. Sharing is indeed at the core of social life. Humans, however, of all social animals, have distinct ways of sharing. They evolved to become Homo Negotiatus; a species that is prone to bargain and to dispute the value of things until some agreement is reached.

Our goal is to investigate the notion of self-agency in William James and Donald Winnicott. With James, we examine the descriptive element of what constitutes a self. With Winnicott, we explore his explanatory theory on self-emergence. Winnicott's perspective is presented here as the prehistory of the Jamesian self. James's conception of self is similar to the Winnicottian notion of an "integrated self", an embodied position that emerges from the organism's actions in the experiential field. The combination of the two approaches (...) leads to the idea that the self is a flux of identities emerging in interaction with others in the "transitional space" (an intermediate area of experience). Johann Gottfried Herder, like his contemporaries, reflected on language and in 1772 published the Treatise on the Origin of Language, which in the previous year had earned the distinction of the Berlin Academy for best essay. However, even today, much of his thought is unknown, ignoring the fact that some of the modern approaches of contemporary philosophy, philosophical anthropology or even sociobiology are already stated there, namely in the narratives resulting from the enunciation of the four natural laws. More than (...) justifying the origin of language, the philosopher’s essay also allows us to understand human nature, inserting its genesis at the heart of philosophical anthropology and contradicting, if not even confronting in this way, the divine tradition of this attribution. Thus, at first, a generic analysis of the work will be carried out, highlighting the fundamental theses that will allow the establishment of a dialogue with some of the contemporary philosophical approaches. Then, admitting the possibility of a scenario of technological singularity, as stated by Irving John Good, Vernor Vinge or Ray Kurzweil, to verify the plausibility and validity of Herder’s theses regarding the scope of language and human nature and how this could constitute a frontier of resistance. The principal aim of the thesis is to develop a developmental account of conscious experience. In this account, the objective is to understand and explain the phenomenal experience of newborns and pre-linguistic infants. The question that guides the investigation concerns the phenomenality of babies' experiences: what is it like to be a baby? There are some crucial philosophical issues that any account of the nature of infant consciousness must face: the ontology of early conscious states; the epistemic status of infants' (...) experiences; the content of infants' experiences. The thesis addresses how we evolve as conscious beings from early states of life until we become full self-conscious beings who are morally responsible for our actions. The thesis involves four chapters. The first chapter explores phenomenal consciousness in newborns, first addressing the epistemological and methodological problems, and then arguing that newborns are phenomenally conscious and have a variety of phenomenal experiences. The second chapter addresses representation in newborns, claiming that their conscious experiences represent the world and discussing the consequences for representationalism. The third chapter focuses on the sense of agency, arguing that infants have a sense of agency and a sort of self-consciousness. The fourth chapter discusses moral agency, focusing mainly on the role of empathy. (shrink)

O presente trabalho objetiva fazer uma análise sobre algumas das principais temáticas elaboradas pelo pensador argentino Luis Alberto Warat, quais sejam: o antropofagismo waratiano, o reencontro com a subjetividade perdida e a carnavalização. Para isso, analisou- se uma das obras mais caras do pensamento waratiano: A ciência jurídica e seus dois maridos. Buscou-se através da análise empreendida, elaborar uma crítica sobre paradigmas tradicionais de ciência, incluindo aqui, a própria Ciência do Direito. Sobreleva-se o caráter de indisciplina das atividades artístico-literárias para (...) insinuar as falhas históricas das disciplinas bem instituídas, do pensamento e da cultura dominantes. The Structure of Scientific Revolutions represented a milestone in the attempt to understand scientific development based on empirical observations. However, in the next decades after the publication of his book, history, psychology, and sociology became increasingly marginal in Kuhn’s discussions. In his last articles, Kuhn even suggested that philosophers should pay less attention to empirical data and focus more on “first principles.” The purpose of this article is, first, to describe this radical transformation in Kuhn’s methodological approach, from his initial (...) naturalism to his later and more strict philosophical stance. Next, I present some of the alleged justifications for explaining this transition, such as his interest in problems more firmly attached to the philosophical tradition and a desire for greater acceptance within this community. Although these factors certainly played a role in explaining Kuhn’s change, I also believe that an important theoretical component exerts a fundamental function in this transition: the idea that scientific development is a kind of evolutionary process, which is better understood through the use of abstract theoretical models, instead of sparse observations of scientific activity. This paper discusses “impartiality thought experiments”, i.e., thought experiments that attempt to generate intuitions which are unaffected by personal characteristics such as age, gender or race. We focus on the most prominent impartiality thought experiment, the Veil of Ignorance (VOI), and show that both in its original Rawlsian version and in a more generic version, empirical investigations can be normatively relevant in two ways: First, on the assumption that the VOI is effective and robust, if subjects dominantly favor a certain (...) normative judgment behind the VOI this provides evidence in favor of that judgment; if, on the other hand, they do not dominantly favor a judgment this reduces our justification for it. Second, empirical investigations can also contribute to assessing the effectiveness and robustness of the VOI in the first place, thereby supporting or undermining its applications across the board. This article endeavours to prove that there were creation myths of human beings or certain things, but there were seldom creation myths of ontological cosmology in ancient China. This will be warranted through the distinction between the concepts of ‘to create’ and ‘to beget’, the distinction between ‘Cosmology I of creationism’ and ‘Cosmology II of begetting’, and the relationship between the One and Many. The only exception is the myth of Nüwa 女娲 as the creator of human beings, but not (...) the creator of the cosmos. Therefore, in ancient Chinese tradition, there were mainly myths of begetting rather than myths of complete creation in the sense similar to creatio ex nihilo.Contribution: Previous research frequently underscores the profound differences between ‘Cosmology I of creationism’ and ‘Cosmology II of begetting’. Based on the discussion of concepts of ‘to create’ [zao 造] and ‘to beget’ [sheng 生], this article argues that, there were mainly myths of begetting rather than myths of complete creation in the sense similar to creatio ex nihilo. The standard approach to the core phenomenology of thought insertion characterizes it in terms of a normal sense of thought ownership coupled with an abnormal sense of thought agency. Recently, Fernández (2010) has argued that there are crucial problems with this approach and has proposed instead that what goes wrong fundamentally in such a phenomenology is a sense of thought commitment, characterized in terms of thought endorsement. In this paper, we argue that even though Fernández raises new issues that enrich (...) the topic, his proposal cannot rival the version of the standard approach we shall defend. (shrink)

According to enactivism all living systems, from single cell organisms to human beings, are ontologically endowed with some form of teleological and sense-making agency. Furthermore, enactivists maintain that: there is no fixed pregiven world and as a consequence all organisms “bring forth” their own unique “worlds” through processes of sense-making. The first half of the paper takes these two ontological claims as its central focus and aims to clarify and make explicit the arguments and motivations underlying them. Our analysis here (...) highlights three distinct but connected problems for enactivism: these arguments do not and cannot guarantee that there is no pregiven world, instead, they end up generating a contradiction whereby a pregiven world seems to in fact be tacitly presupposed by virtue of a reliance on a tacit epistemic perspectivalism which is also inherently representationalist and as a consequence makes it difficult to satisfactorily account for the ontological plurality of worlds. Taking these considerations on board, the second half of the paper then aims to develop a more robust ontologically grounded enactivism. Drawing from biosemiotic enactivism, science and technology studies and anthropology, the paper aims to present an account which both rejects a pregiven world and coherently accounts for how organisms bring forth ontologically multiple worlds. To what extent do early intuitions about ownership depend on cultural and socio-economic circumstances? We investigated the question by testing reasoning about third party ownership conflicts in various groups of three- and five-year-old children (N = 176), growing up in seven highly contrasted social, economic, and cultural circumstances (urban rich, poor, very poor, rural poor, and traditional) spanning three continents. Each child was presented with a series of scripts involving two identical dolls fighting over an object of possession. The child (...) had to decide who of the two dolls should own the object. Each script enacted various potential reasons for attributing ownership: creation, familiarity, first contact, equity, plus a control/neutral condition with no suggested reasons. Results show that across cultures, children are significantly more consistent and decisive in attributing ownership when one of the protagonists created the object. Development between three and five years is more or less pronounced depending on culture. The propensity to split the object in equal halves whenever possible was generally higher at certain locations (i.e., China) and quasi-inexistent in others (i.e., Vanuatu and street children of Recife). Overall, creation reasons appear to be more primordial and stable across cultures than familiarity, relative wealth or first contact. This trend does not correlate with the passing of false belief theory of mind. (shrink)

O objetivo do texto é abordar a temática dos meios de comunicação como instrumento de poder à luz da indústria cultural conforme Theodor Adorno. Busca-se responder à seguinte questão: como a indústria cultural reproduz as relações de poder no capitalismo contemporâneo? Para a consecução de tal objetivo, o texto apresenta as seguintes etapas: uma breve contextualização histórica e teórica da Teoria Crítica - vertente filosófica à qual Adorno e outros autores se filiaram – a definição da indústria cultural conforme Adorno (...) em seus principais argumentos, os efeitos da indústria cultural e do capitalismo organizado, a postura crítica frente ao contexto referido e a nova postura de Adorno nos anos 50 e 60 frente aos meios de comunicação. A principal tese do artigo leva ao entendimento de que a indústria cultural incorpora toda uma racionalidade de dominação e disciplina da vida social e reprodução da ordem capitalista vigente, acabando com as contradições no âmbito das manifestações artísticas na medida em que somente o lucro é visado. Experimental results in reference to Brazilian children and adults are presented in the context of current discussions about essentialism and folkbiology. Using an adoption paradigm, we replicate the basic findings of a previous article in this journal concerning the early emergence in children of a birth-parent bias. This cognitive bias supports the claim that causal essentialism cross-culturally constrains the reasoning about the origin, development and maintenance of the characteristics and identity of living kinds. This article examines the evaluative nature of the folk concepts of weakness and strength of will and hypothesizes that their evaluative nature is strongly connected to the folk concepts of blame and credit. We probed how people apply the concepts of weakness and strength of will to prototypical and non-prototypical scenarios. While regarding prototypical scenarios the great majority applied these concepts according to the predictions following from traditional philosophical analyses. When presented with non-prototypical scenarios, people were divided. Some, against traditional (...) analyses, did not apply these concepts, which we explain in terms of a clash of evaluations involving different sorts of blame and credit. Others applied them according to traditional analyses, which we explain in terms of a disposition to be reflective and clearly set apart the different sorts of blame and credit involved.
