У статті розглянуто особливості діяльності міжнародного соціалістичного руху напередодні Першої світової війни. З'ясовано, що, попри зростання ролі соціалістів у суспільно-політичному житті європейських держав, вони репрезентували лише організований робітничий рух. Лівим удалось досягнути значного успіху в пропаганді соціалістичних гасел та організації робітничого класу після витіснення анархістів. Попри задекларовану єдність у ІІ Інтернаціоналі, соціалісти з різних країн не мали спільного бачення перспектив розвитку соціалістичного руху, його цілей та пріоритетів, а також ставлення до співпраці з офіційними урядами держав. Це спричинило ідейний поділ на (...) реформістів та радикалів у соціалістичному русі. Більшість лівих об'єднань та рухів були переконані, що австрійсько-сербський конфлікт удасться локалізувати і він не стане початком масштабних військових дій. Доведено, що ідеологічно-політичні поділи у ІІ Інтернаціоналі зрештою стали причиною розколу міжнародного соціалістичного руху з початком масштабних бойових дій у Європі. (shrink)

У статті розглянуто становище міжнародного лівого руху в умовах існування Версальської системи міжнародних відносин. На конкретних прикладах показані відмінності в ідеологічних принципах існування Комуністичного Інтернаціоналу та Соціалістичного Робітничого Інтернаціоналу. Особлива увага приділена процесам об'єднання учасників Бернського інтернаціоналу та Віденської спільноти. Зроблено висновки про те, що різні погляди на тактику та методи побудови соціалістичної держави стали на заваді об'єднанню учасників міжнародного соціалістичного руху та спричинили остаточний розкол у першій половині 1920-х рр.

Проаналізовано природу і вплив концепту "історичної образи" на становлення сучасного російського суспільно-політичного дискурсу про Крим. Показано, що в періоди економічних, політичних і соціальних криз національна образа може відіграти негативну роль, оскільки власні біди й негаразди можуть бути поставлені в провину іншим національним спільнотам. Почуття невдоволення й роз­дратування шукає виходу й часто виливається в акті агресії, причому метою цієї агресії може бути практично будь-який об'єкт, зовсім не (...) пов'язаний з джерелом самої напруженості. На цьому ґрунті, доводять автори, виростає явище так званого "національного ресентименту", який хоч і схожий, але не тотожний феномену "національної образи". (shrink)

Previous studies suggest that small rural schools experience a range of challenges relating to their size, financial difficulties and geographical isolation, as well as potential opportunities relating to their position within their communities. In Northern Ireland, these schools are situated within the comparatively rare context of a religiously divided school system. However, research on these schools in this jurisdiction is scarce. The notion of consociationalism is highlighted as central to an understanding of the prevailing schooling system and the peace process (...) in Northern Ireland as a post-conflict society. Set against this backdrop, the paper reports on a survey of principals of small rural schools in Northern Ireland; the challenges they face and their engagement with the communities they serve. The findings reveal how these small rural primary schools, while encountering many similar challenges to such schools globally, continue to play a central consociational role in serving their respective divided communities. Their relationship with the Church is seen as particularly important. The findings raise important broader questions as to the extent to which the current system of schooling is able to contribute to the building of a more integrated society. (shrink)

The focus of the author’s attention has been on the emblematic sense concentration in the philosophical system of Hryhorii Skovoroda. The study aims to reveal the artistic and style features of eide emblematic formation in the texts of the Ukrainian sophist, their origin, context, and conceptual classification by the author himself. The theoretical generalizations were essentially based on the philosophical treatises and dialogues by Hryhorii Skovoroda and the studies of other scholars. To analyze the issues under scrutiny, the author applied (...) structuralist and semiotic methodology. The article highlights the emblematic sense, conveyance, and dominance in Skovoroda’s works. Emblematic forms of signification play a unique role in elucidating the anthropological, metaphysical, ethical, aesthetic, and hermeneutic dimensions of the Ukrainian poet and philosopher. Skovoroda considers emblemacity a particularly effective pictorial and verbal (iconic-conventional) type of “significative” speech, functioning as metalanguage. (shrink)

The roots of Newton’s mathematization of nature, this paper aims to demonstrate, are to be found in Isaac Barrow’s (1630–77) philosophy of the mathematical sciences.Barrow’s attitude (...) towards natural philosophy evolved from his earnest interest in medicine of around 1650, when a young Cambridge graduate, to natural philosophy (apparently under Henry More’s influence); from his thesis on the insufficiency of the Cartesian hypothesis to geometrical optics and the strong program of mathematization of natural philosophy of the middle 1660s; from Lucasian professor of Mathematics to Chaplain of his Majesty and eminent Restoration divine. David Armstrong's book is a contribution to the philosophical discussion about possible worlds. Taking Wittgenstein's Tractatus as his point of departure, Professor Armstrong argues that nonactual possibilities and possible worlds are recombinations of actually existing elements, and as such are useful fictions. There is an extended criticism of the alternative-possible-worlds approach championed by the American philosopher David Lewis. This major work will be read with interest by a wide range of philosophers.

It remains largely unknown what was knowledge of philosophy by writers in Kyivan Rus’ of the 11th – 14th centuries. Moreover, there are no methodological foundations of resolving the issue. I suggest the key to the solution is the analysis of the meanings of words “philosophy” and “philosophers” in the texts of that time. This article aims to analyse how different researchers interpreted the meanings of these words in Kyivan Rus’ written sources of the 11th – 14th centuries. Use of (...) the word “philosophy” was interpreted by the researchers in six different ways: as an approximate synonym for the word “education”, but also as a pagan or Christian wisdom, as theology, as an allegorical method of interpreting Scripture, and as the knowledge of the nature of things. Some researchers emphasized one of the meanings, but others opted for a “pluralistic approach”, considering that Kyivan writers used the word in different meanings at the same time. The same is true about the word “philosopher”. It referred to an educated man, an ancient philosopher, a Christian thinker, a theologian etc. Another approach in the interpretation of these terms suggested Vilen Horskyi, distinguishing formal and essential properties of words “philosophy” and “philosopher”. He finds that the essential feature of philosophy was deification, a process whose aim is likeness to God, and cognition of God’s wisdom. Furthermore, according to Horskyi, in the philosopher the link between his knowledge and his action was inextricable. (shrink)

This is a study of a crucial and controversial topic in metaphysics and the philosophy of science: the status of the laws of nature. D. M. Armstrong works out clearly and in comprehensive detail a largely original view that laws are relations between properties or universals. The theory is continuous with the views on universals and more generally with the scientific realism that Professor Armstrong has advanced in earlier publications. He begins here by mounting an attack on the orthodox and (...) sceptical view deriving from Hume that laws assert no more than a regularity of coincidence between instances of properties. In doing so he presents what may become the definitive statement of the case against this position. Professor Armstrong then goes on to establish his own theory in a systematic manner defending it against the most likely objections, and extending both it and the related theory of universals to cover functional and statistical laws. This paper tries to interrogate the verb "to attend" in its double acceptation, as perceptive attention and as care. What seems interesting in the study of the link between both meanings is that it puts into play a subject who understands himself or herself in strict relationship with an otherness whose way of being is determined by his or her answers. In this sense, the progressive examination that goes from perceptive attention to attention as care brings important resources to think the responsive dimension of the self under the auspices of contemporary phenomenology: Ricoeur, but also Levinas, Marion, Chrétien, Housset and Romano. Un fenómeno singular que ocurre de acuerdo a una saturación particular como un acontecimiento personal y dramático, y que puede ser experienciado en tanto que se impone irreversible e irrevocable. Así, cada una de estas notas constitutivas del sufrimiento revelarán la transformación y transmutación que este producen despliegue de nuestra atención, afectando la propia (...) relación con nosotros mismos, con los otros y con el mundo. El siguiente artículo interroga dos concepciones que Ricoeur desarrolla sobre la vida en dos momentos distintos de su obra: el primero corresponde a una filosofía de la voluntad desarrollado a lo largo de una década (1950-1960), y el segundo a una hermenéutica de los textos que elabora particularmente a partir de su trilogía Temps et récit. Nuestra tesis de lectura consiste en afirmar que los discursos que Ricoeur ha elaborado sobre la vida, tanto fenomenológico como hermenéutico, están marcados por el (...) predominio de la afirmación, de la potencia del sí que se sobrepone a las diversas figuras de la negatividad, cobrando sentido el título de su obra póstuma Vivo hasta la muerte. Consentir y narrar son dos modos de afirmar a pesar de su opacidad y negatividad. The following article examines two manner of understandings life that Ricoeur develops in two different moments of his work: the first moment corresponds to a philosophy of the will developed during the decade of the 50th and the second corresponds to a hermeneutics of the texts that Ricoeur develops particularly in his trilogy Temps et récit. My thesis is that the different discourses that Ricoeur has elaborated about life, phenomenological and hermeneutical, are marked by the idea of affirmation, that is, by the potency of a self that overcomes the different figures of negativity. Then, we can make sense of the title of Ricoeur posthumous work Living Up to Death. Consent and narrate are two ways to affirm despite its opacity and negativity. (shrink)

Dos objetivos dan cuerpo a este intento: 1) situar el lugar del testigo en el marco de la fenomenología contemporánea, particularmente, de Husserl, Sartre y Lévinas; 2) preguntarse por la condición pasible del testigo, condición que a mí juicio hace de éste un respondiente, inscribiendo la obra ricoeuriana, con todas las cautelas correspondientes, que deben ser muchas, al inicio de (...) lo que puedo llamar el avance de diversos intentos de conducir una fenomenología de la responsividad (Jean-Louis Chrétien, Emmanuel Housset, Claude Romano), siendo cada uno de ellos, en todo caso, tan singular y original que habría que probar si son o no coincidentes. Il s’agit dans cet article de montrer que l’éthique ricoeurienne exposée dans Soi-même comme un autre peut et doit être pensée par rapport à l’anthropologie et l’ontologie que le philosophe a progressivement développées depuis son premier grand projet philosophique phénoménologique jusqu’à son œuvre de maturité. Dans le but d’esquisser cette approche des fondements onto-anthropologiques de l’éthique ricœurienne, nous partons d’abord des textes de jeunesse de Ricœur dans lesquels il développe une longue méditation sur le risque qu’implique l’acte de la liberté: (...) risque d’être soi-même, de décider et d’agir sur le monde avec et pour les autres. Puis, notre analyse s’intéresse à la conception ricœurienne du consentement et de l’affectivité afin de voir dans quelle mesure elle est susceptible d’éclairer le développement de l’éthique et de la notion de sujet éthique dans le cadre de la phénoménologie herméneutique de Ricœur. L’article conduit ainsi une analyse de la question du “je peux” et du “je veux” dans Le volontaire et l’involontaire, en passant par L’homme faillible pour déboucher enfin sur un examen de “l’homme agissant et souffrant” dans Soi-même comme un autre. The Jesuit C.F. Milliet Dechales, author of one of the most famous early modern mathematical encyclopedias, Cursus seu mundus mathematicus, wrote a hundred-folio-page long treatise devoted to the “progress of mathematics,” which was published in the second, enlarged edition of his encyclopedia. His historical treatise covers the gamut of mixed mathematics—including astronomy, mechanics, optics, music, geography and navigation, ars tignaria, and architecture. The early modern historical narratives about the mathematical sciences, from Regiomontanus’s Oratio onwards, have been aptly characterized by their (...) literary form and goals rather than their historical content. Rhetoric, humanistic topoi, and philosophical filiation turned the histories of mathematics into powerful tools for different purposes. My account of Dechales’ tract on the “progress of mathematics” analyzes the ways in which it dovetails with Jesuit approaches to mathematics, provides legitimation to the mathematical sciences as well as to their authors, and contributes to define the role and boundaries of the discipline, in particular vis-à-vis natural philosophy.
