    Some uses of subject-side assessments.Jonathan Potter & Derek Edwards - 2017 - Discourse Studies 19 (5):497-514.
We focus on assessments in conversation, paying particular attention to a distinction between object-side and subject-side assessments. O-side assessments are predicated of an object, whereas S-side assessments formulate a disposition of the speaker toward that object. Despite looking somewhat interchangeable, logically, these different ways of making assessments serve different interactional functions. In particular, S-side assessments allow for contrasting assessments of the same object by different persons. They are therefore useful in the management and avoidance of conflict and misalignment in the (...)

  11. Hale on caesar.Peter Sullivan & Michael Potter - 1997 - Philosophia Mathematica 5 (2):135--52.
Crispin Wright and Bob Hale have defended the strategy of defining the natural numbers contextually against the objection which led Frege himself to reject it, namely the so-called ‘Julius Caesar problem’. To do this they have formulated principles (called sortal inclusion principles) designed to ensure that numbers are distinct from any objects, such as persons, a proper grasp of which could not be afforded by the contextual definition. We discuss whether either Hale or Wright has provided independent motivation for a (...)

    The Birth of Analytic Philosophy.Michael Potter - 2011 - Sententiae 24 (1):40-77.
The article reviews logical and mathematical problems, which were the starting point of what is now known as “analytical philosophy”. The author proves that the moment of birth of analytical philosophy was Frege’s invention of a notation for quantifiers and va-riables in 1879. Another source of analytical philosophy was rather declaration than proof of certain philosophical beliefs by Moore and Russell during the 1990s. Generally, an analysis of these sources serves to clarify what analytical philosophy is and what it is (...)

Participant Reactions to a Literacy-Focused, Web-Based Informed Consent Approach for a Genomic Implementation Study.Stephanie A. Kraft, Kathryn M. Porter, Devan M. Duenas, Claudia Guerra, Galen Joseph, Sandra Soo-Jin Lee, Kelly J. Shipman, Jake Allen, Donna Eubanks, Tia L. Kauffman, Nangel M. Lindberg, Katherine Anderson, Jamilyn M. Zepp, Marian J. Gilmore, Kathleen F. Mittendorf, Elizabeth Shuster, Kristin R. Muessig, Briana Arnold, Katrina A. B. Goddard & Benjamin S. Wilfond - 2021 - AJOB Empirical Bioethics 12 (1):1-11.
Background: Clinical genomic implementation studies pose challenges for informed consent. Consent forms often include complex language and concepts, which can be a barrier to diverse enrollment, and these studies often blur traditional research-clinical boundaries. There is a move toward self-directed, web-based research enrollment, but more evidence is needed about how these enrollment approaches work in practice. In this study, we developed and evaluated a literacy-focused, web-based consent approach to support enrollment of diverse participants in an ongoing clinical genomic implementation study. (...)

  16. What is the problem of mathematical knowledge?Michael Potter - 2007 - In Mary Leng, Alexander Paseau & Michael D. Potter (eds.), Mathematical Knowledge. Oxford, England: Oxford University Press.
Suggests that the recent emphasis on Benacerraf's access problem locates the peculiarity of mathematical knowledge in the wrong place. Instead we should focus on the sense in which mathematical concepts are or might be "armchair concepts" – concepts about which non-trivial knowledge is obtainable a priori.

  20. How realist is the Tractatus?Michael Potter - 2021 - Disputatio 10 (18).
On the face of it the structure of the Tractatus has realism baked in. The book starts out from a world of facts, and then proceeds to argue in stages so as to arrive at a single form that any proposition representing how things stand in the world must have. It is only when we examine the details of this argument that this straightforwardly deductive argumentative structure begins to fall apart. When correctly understood, I suggest, Wittgenstein's stance is much more (...)

Laying Down Love Laws: Arundhati Roy’s The God of Small Things and Micro-Fascisms.Kevin Potter - 2022 - Deleuze and Guattari Studies 16 (3):454-478.
In Anti-Oedipus and A Thousand Plateaus, Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari emphasise the difficulty of confronting ‘micro-fascisms’. Such fascisms occur at the micropolitical level as they permeate and modulate across social collectivities and networks. Arundhati Roy’s novel, The God of Small Things, reflects upon overt and violent modes of social division and classifications that determine ‘who should be loved and how. And how much’. Such a system ‘restrains or limits the individual’s power’, diminishing the ‘capacity to be affected’, as Deleuze (...)
