The aim of this article is to promote an analysis of the intercultural experience carried out through the exchange of letters with children from the city of Ninomiya, Kanagawa Province – Japan, with children from the Municipal Education Network of the Veranópolis, Rio Grande do Sul – Brazil. The exchanges take place annually through the Post and Telegraph service in Brazil and Japan, between students from the 3rd to 9th years of this network. Japanese children write to Veranians and vice (...) versa. They tell facts about their routine, their city, peculiar aspects of their daily lives, including photos and geographic and cultural characteristics specific to each local space. This experience invites us to expand our gaze on the importance of thematizing, in the educational process, sociocultural aspects of different peoples, social groups, customs and ways of being and living together. We challenge ourselves to reflect on how this practice of exchanging letters, between children from two very different countries, both socially and culturally, manages to raise awareness about issues related to interculturality as a field of debate about identity processes that constitute an environment. Furthermore, it allows us to analyze issues related to the ease of writing and the symbology used to describe aspects related to the daily life of each child, as well as the subjectivity in each message in the exchange of letters. The reciprocity in exchanges, the care with the details present in each report, the richness that makes up the writing and how everyday life presents itself with similarities and differences in the life of each student, whether here or in Japan, are essential components in the construction of this analysis. Le présent article se propose de reconstruire la dialectique entre nécessité et liberté dans l’œuvre de Rousseau – du Discours sur l’inégalité à La profession de foi – à partir de l’analyse de La Morale sensitive ou le Matérialisme du sage, «écrit fantôme» projeté durant le séjour à l’Ermitage du 1756. Dans cette oeuvre inachevée Jean-Jacques se proposait d’enquêter sur l’influence que les objets extérieurs ont nécessairement sur l’intériorité de l’être humain pour, ensuite, envisager une réforme de l’âme axée sur (...) la possibilité de «forcer l’économie animale à favoriser l’ordre moral». On tentera de montrer ici comment le rêve intellectuel consistant à garantir la liberté morale par le biais de la nécessité physique a profondément influencé l’évolution de la dialectique rousseauiste entre nécessité et liberté, d’un niveau biologico-anthropologique à un niveau plus strictement philosophique. Le défi de Rousseau consiste à expliquer l’influence nécessaire du physique sur le moral, tout en sauvegardant – par la définition d’un dualisme spécifique – la liberté absolue de la dimension morale, ainsi que son caractère spécifique de qualité humaine. La réflexion cosmologique de Bernardin de Saint-Pierre est un outil précieux pour mieux comprendre sa philosophie – généralement négligée par la critique – et, surtout, le providentialisme anthropocentrique qui est au centre de son épistémologie. Les croyances astronomiques de Saint-Pierre sont exprimées dans deux grands ouvrages théoriques : les Études de la nature de 1784 et, particulièrement, les Harmonies de la nature, écrites dans les vingt dernières années de sa vie et publiées à titre posthume en 1814. Le neuvième et (...) dernier livre de cet ouvrage est consacré spécifiquement à la cosmologie, comme l’indique son titre : Harmonies du Ciel, ou les mondes. Bernardin y rejette fermement les explications du cosmos qui, comme celle de Laplace, déclarent l’inutilité du recours à Dieu dans la description de la mécanique céleste, pour analyser la seule loi qu’il reconnaisse comme universelle et intemporelle : la providence divine. À partir de prémisses méthodologiques spécifiques (rejet de la synthèse, primauté du sentiment, méthode intuitive, etc.), Saint-Pierre construit une cosmologie téléologique qui combine un « ciel médité », inspiré de Huygens et Herschel, et un « ciel rêvé », caractérisé par des idées mystiques et par un élément évident de normativité morale. Cette synergie de différentes inspirations, originale et parfois féconde, est particulièrement évidente dans les questions relatives à la pluralité des mondes et l’habitabilité du Soleil. (shrink)

Quelle est la place de l’odorat dans la pensée de Jean-Jacques Rousseau? L’importance qu’il attribue à la dimension olfactive, tant dans les écrits théoriques ( Discours sur l’inégalité, Émile ) que dans les écrits autobiographiques et romanesques, le place en contre-tendance par rapport à la pensée des Lumières, caractérisée par une dévaluation gnoséologique et éthique de l’odorat. Rousseau est parmi les rares à saisir, dans un sens nouveau et très moderne, la signification philosophique de l’odorat, qu’il insère au cœur de (...) sa doctrine des facultés, pour expliquer la spécificité morale et sociale de l’être humain. daUniversidade de Valparaíso. Tive a sorte de participar de dois seminários que ali deu:um sobre as teses a Feuerbach de Marx e outro sobre Arthur Rimbaud. Me chamarama atenção profundamente algumas ideias que Fédier fazia pensar. Uma delas foi: “épreciso ser absolutamente modernos”, de Rimbaud; a outra, “falar por falar, tal é afórmula da liberação”, de Novalis. Um tanto desapontado, me perguntava se essejovem professor, acompanhado por seus estudantes de khâgne – homens e mulheres –, não estaria esquecendo-se da crítica (...) de Heidegger à modernidade e o seuquestionamento do se diz, da fala cotidiana. O fato de estar usando calças boca de sinoaumentava a minha estranheza interiorana diante do visitante. Por sorte, a admiraçãoe respeito que suscitava entre os grandes mestres da filosofia no Chile fizeram comque tal suspeita se dissipasse rapidamente. (shrink)

The Marquis de Sade’s work can be considered as one of the inaugural instances of a technique that, within both the philosophical and literary realm, is typical of the nineteenth century: emotional restraint. His disapproval of the rhetoric of empathy and moral sentimentalism assumes particular relevance in that it is an “internal” critique. Availing himself of certain characteristic premises of the sentimentalist philosophy—which are primarily attributable to the works of Jean-Jacques Rousseau—Sade completely changes their conclusions, to the point of reaching (...) a conscious form of immoralism. SummaryThe aim of this article is to shed light on the methodological relationship between the history of ideas and the history of emotions, starting from the conception of weeping in the eighteenth-century French reflection. This period was critical for the defining of the modern concept of emotion because it encompassed the development of a new aesthetic and moral code centred on the exasperation of sensitivity and an exaggerated use of tears. This study brings out, in terms of methodology, the importance (...) that the analysis of tears assumed from two points of view: on the one hand, it places the problem in a framework determined by history and culture (the object of study for the history of emotions); on the other, it recognises the unavoidable axiological and moral element that characterised crying (the object of study for the history of ideas). After a brief reconstruction of the discussion of tears in the history of emotion—from the histoire des mentalités to the ‘emotional turn’—and in the history of ideas, respectively, the article outlines some potential areas for research in an interdisciplinary perspective. In this article we consider certain elements of the normative theory of Jürgen Habermas in the light of the proposals of Bruce Ackerman, with a view to strengthening a concept of deliberative democracy applied to the legitimation of juridical rules. We do not construct a hierarchy of the two positions, but seek to bring together certain elements to achieve a common project. As the starting point for examining the work of the two authors, we take the scheme proposed by Habermas (...) in Faktizität und Geltung. In this connection, through the work of Ackerman, we intend to fill in some of the gaps that Habermas appears to have left in the theory of radical democracy applied to the law. The work of Ackerman can make a significant contribution to deliberative democracy, to the discourse principle that Habermas defines, and to the contractualist theories from a liberal perspective. The study of these contributions makes possible a critical judgment that enables the legitimation of juridical rules carried out by Habermas to acquire greater practicity. In examining the epistemological status of juridical science and law, we attempt to determine the weight and the performance of normative democracy. In Tarr's view, it is a matter for philosophers to examine direct democracy and its desirability. (shrink)
