Hegel’s mature system, because of its division into three parts, makes particularly high demands on the argumentative powers when it comes to the demonstration of the necessity of the links between the respective parts of the system. It is a well known fact that the transition from/of logic to natural philosophy is a very critical point in the system, and was already subjected to particular criticism by Schelling as being a weak point in the system. For Hegel, however, the transition (...) from natural philosophy to the philosophy of spirit is also such a critical seam or hinge in his system. The three versions of the Encyclopedia of the Philosophical Sciences provide documentary evidence of his continuous work on the relevant passages. Hegel’s own handwritten notes and drafts, and also the students’ manuscripts of his lectures on “subjective spirit”, provide interpreters with additional information and thus give them more profound insights into Hegel’s efforts to achieve conceptual precision in this area, as well as into an abundance of empirical material that Hegel gathered and subsequently incorporated from contemporary science as it developed. Histories of Roman literature state under Martial that his birthday was on ist March.1 Martial repeatedly says so himself. But these statements must now be questioned, since they harbour a peculiar difficulty, perhaps even a problem, whose solution is here attempted.

It is well known that Hegel’s Philosophy of Right initiated, when it first appeared, a dispute about his philosophy in general that has not abated to the present day. The initial grounds for this dispute included: Hegel’s often virulent attacks, in the Philosophy of Right, on contemporaries such as Fries, Hugo, and von Haller; the question of his political stance within Prussia, which was then rapidly developing into a reactionary, authoritarian state; in other words, the question of Hegel’s political accommodation, (...) the question of his attitude to natural law, and so on. For a long time, therefore, the philosophical dispute was shaped by the political interests of the day. The struggle against Hegel’s philosophical system as a whole even resorted to personal defamation of the philosopher, so that, by revealing personal weakness, his system and the influential school of followers he had attracted could be discredited. Likewise, the diverse attempts at an adequate assessment of the historical influence of Hegel’s philosophy have come to a head. The two main questions, also deriving their inspiration from differing interpretations of the Philosophy of Right, are: How legitimate are the various Marxist references to Hegel as either the forerunner of Marxism or its principal opponent? How legitimate is the accusation that Hegel, by developing a totalitarian theory of the state, prepared the ground for twentieth century fascism, especially National Socialism? As previous research has pointed out, an adequate assessment of such relations will have to deal very carefully with Hegel’s position in his own day. For example, apart from his attitude to the situation in Prussia, his attitude to the most important event of the age, the French Revolution, must be examined. Furthermore, comparative perspectives must be established, so that the distinctive shape of Hegel’s philosophy of right can be seen clearly, against the background of the European constitutional debates of the day. In the last analysis, however, the essence of the disagreement still stems from the problem of the proper political classification of Hegel’s philosophy of right. (shrink)

This possibility brings human germline editing into the focus of ethical and legal debates again.Main bodyAgainst this background, we explore essential ethical and legal questions of interventions into the human germline by means of CRISPR-Cas: How should issues of risk and uncertainty be handled? What responsibilities arise regarding future generations? Under which conditions can germline editing measures be therapeutically legitimized? For this (...) purpose, we refer to a scenario anticipating potential further development in CRISPR-Cas technology implying improved accuracy and exclusion of germline transmission to future generations. We show that, if certain concepts regarding germline editing are clarified, under such conditions a categorical prohibition of one-generation germline editing of single-cell embryos appears not to be ethically or legally justifiable.ConclusionThese findings are important prerequisites for the international debate on the ethical and legal justification of germline interventions in the human embryo as well as for the harmonization of international legal standards. Objectives:Social isolation is increasing in aging societies and several studies have shown a relation with worse cognition in old age. However, less is known about the association in the oldest-old (85+); the group that is at highest risk for both social isolation and dementia. Methods:Analyses were based on follow-up 5 to 9 of the longitudinal German study on aging, cognition, and dementia in primary care patients (AgeCoDe) and the study on needs, health service use, costs, and health-related quality of life (...) in a large sample of oldest-old primary care patients (AgeQualiDe), a multi-center population-based prospective cohort study. Measurements included the Lubben Social Network Scale (LSNS-6), with a score below 12 indicating social isolation, as well as the Mini-Mental Status Examination (MMSE) as an indicator of cognitive function. Results:Dementia-free study participants (n = 942) were M = 86.4 (SD = 3.0) years old at observation onset, 68.2% were women. One third (32.3%) of them were socially isolated. Adjusted linear hybrid mixed effects models revealed significantly lower cognitive function in individuals with smaller social networks (β = 0.5, 95% CI = 0.3-0.7, p <.001). Moreover, changes in an individual's social network size were significantly associated with cognitive changes over time (β = 0.2, 95% CI = 0.1-0.4, p =.003), indicating worse cognitive function with shrinking social networks. Conclusion:Social isolation is highly prevalent among oldest-old individuals, being a risk factor for decreases in cognitive function. Consequently, it is important to maintain a socially active lifestyle into very old age. Likewise, this calls for effective ways to prevent social isolation. (shrink)

Throughout his career, Hans Jonas has reflected on the notion of the human soul and on the concept of man being created in God’s image. A careful analysis of his writings reveals that (approximately) from 1968 he changed his perspective on these topics. Before this year, Jonas used some Gnostic myths to speak about the image of man in relation to God and was concerned that referring to the immortality of the human soul or to the notion of imago (...) Dei could lead to dualistic or pseudo-Gnostic interpretations of the natural world. From 1968 (when Jonas published an article for an American Jewish journal) he started to underline the importance of the Judeo-Christian notion of imago Dei (from the book of Genesis) for his ethical project. Subsequently, he used this concept (derived from the Bible rather than from Gnostic texts) in support of his ethical approach to show the special role that God assigned to humanity to act as a steward of His creation. This article presents the development of Jonas’s contributions on these issues over time, their importance in relation to his ethical project and how he was influenced in the development of his perspective on this subject. Widowhood is common in old age, can be accompanied by serious health consequences and is often linked to substantial changes in social network. Little is known about the impact of social isolation on the development of depressive symptoms over time taking widowhood into account. We provide results from the follow-up 5 to follow-up 9 from the longitudinal study AgeCoDe and its follow-up study AgeQualiDe. Depression was measured with GDS-15 and social isolation was assessed using the Lubben Social Network Scale (LSNS-6). (...) The group was aligned of married and widowed people in old age and education through entropy balancing. Linear mixed models were used to examine the frequency of occurrence of depressive symptoms for widowed and married elderly people depending on the risk of social isolation. Our study shows that widowhood alone does not lead to an increased occurrence of depressive symptoms. However, "widowed oldest old", who are also at risk of social isolation, have significantly more depressive symptoms than those without risk. In the group of "married oldest old", women have significantly more depressive symptoms than men, but isolated and non-isolated do not differ. Especially for people who have lost a spouse, the social network changes significantly and increases the risk for social isolation. This represents a risk factor for the occurrence of depressive symptoms. (shrink)

O presente artigo aborda a relação da atual sociedade com a tecnologia que se dá em uma esfera de enorme escala; primeiro isso se demonstra como uma enxurrada de informação; segundamente essa informação possibilitada pela tecnologia atinge níveis de percepção da psique do indivíduo que a utiliza pois, por meio do ato de transparência, o sujeito torna público e externo seu conteúdo interno e subjetivo. A enxurrada de informação acontece porque a comunicação se dá, em primeiro lugar, como o meio (...) pelo qual nos comunicamos. Posteriormente, a comunicação tecnológica acontece em tal ordem de transparência que a reunião dessas informações “tornam possíveis prognósticos sobre o comportamento humano. Dessa maneira, o futuro se torna previsível e controlável” (HAN, 2018, p. 23). Tal transparência surge, porque segundo Byung-Chul Han, a sociedade que era disciplinar, negativa e controladora deu espaço para uma sociedade positiva, transparente e desempenhada. De um lado, a sociedade negativa limita a liberdade e, portanto, coloca limite no desempenho que um sujeito conseguiria desenvolver, por outro lado, uma sociedade positiva dá espaço para uma liberdade individual que não traça limites para aquilo que o sujeito pode fazer. Essa falta de limites se personifica na forma de uma aparente transparência que quando adotada por dado indivíduo, se demonstra como a externação do conteúdo subjetivo e interior. Essa externação só é possível na relação do indivíduo com a tecnologia pois, através dela ele comunica suas informações. Essas informações geram um conhecimento “de dominação que permite intervir na psique e que pode influenciá-la em um nível pré-reflexivo” (HAN, 2018, p. 23). (shrink)

Beginning with an article by Hans Robert Jauss, which detects in Hans Belting some "unease" towards hermeneutics, this paper claims instead that Belting, in his studies, manifests deep hermeneutic awareness, among other things indebted in many respects to Jauss' reception theory itself. Nonetheless, it is still possible to notice some "unease," which emerges in the way Belting considers hermeneutics among the "methods and games" of history of art. In this regard, Belting's analysis – concerning the relationship between iconology (...) and hermeneutics and between philosophical and art historical hermeneutics – appears densely loaded with meaning but also partial. This is due to the fact that he limits himself to critically discussing only one tendency, well represented, in his eyes, by Wilhelm Dilthey, Hans-Georg Gadamer and Hans Sedlmayr, the latter being the only representative of art historical hermeneutics that Belting takes into account. First collected in Italy in 1985, _Art's Claim to Truth_ is considered by many philosophers to be one of Gianni Vattimo's most important works. Newly revised for English readers, the book begins with a challenge to Plato, Aristotle, Kant, and Hegel, who viewed art as a metaphysical aspect of reality rather than a futuristic anticipation of it. Following Martin Heidegger's interpretation of the history of philosophy, Vattimo outlines the existential ontological conditions of aesthetics, paying particular attention to the works of (...) Kandinsky, which reaffirm the ontological implications of art. Vattimo then builds on Hans-Georg Gadamer's theory of aesthetics and provides an alternative to a rationalistic-positivistic criticism of art. This is the heart of Vattimo's argument, and with it he demonstrates how hermeneutical philosophy reaffirms art's ontological status and makes clear the importance of hermeneutics for aesthetic studies. In the book's final section, Vattimo articulates the consequences of reclaiming the ontological status of aesthetics without its metaphysical implications, holding Aristotle's concept of beauty responsible for the dissolution of metaphysics itself. La teoría crítica de Adorno –cuyo desarrollo filosófico y metódico fundamental se encuentra en Dialéctica negativa– ha sido objeto de lecturas marcadamente contrapuestas, desde aquellas que critican las estreches de su análisis social y la impotencia de su actitud política, hasta los que advierten en ella una lucidez analítica admirable y un trasfondo político radical cuyas posibilidades no han terminado aún de explorarse en profundidad. Esta ambigüedad interpretativa, debido en gran parte a la reticencia de Adorno a formular una filosofía (...) política como tal, nos lleva a preguntarnos en qué medida la extemporaneidad de su pensamiento lo ha convertido en un precedente de aproximaciones políticas que hoy ya nos resultan familiares y, sobre todo, si nos puede ayudar a reconceptualizar algunas de estas nociones y a dar respuesta así a la cuestión de la transformación política en un contexto tan problemático como el contemporáneo. Por eso, el objetivo de este trabajo es tratar de elucidar la concepción de lo político que subyace a la teoría de Adorno y poner su pensamiento en diálogo con perspectivas políticas rigurosamente contemporáneas –particularmente, la de la impolítica y la del pensamiento político posfundacional– para delinear el sentido y la forma posibles de una propuesta de transformación política a partir de la dialéctica adorniana. Even though the past few years have witnessed an increased interest in Emilio Betti’s thought, there are still important aspects of his work that need to be investigated, including his hermeneutics of art. Brief references to it have been made, but there have been only tentative attempts to identify a comprehensive aesthetic approach in Betti’s work. Of great relevance in this context is the one text where Betti’s hermeneutics has been interpellated in relation to historic and artistic interpretation, that is, (...) a 1965 essay by Hans Sedlmayr, the renowned art historian of the “New Viennese School.” In the vast corpus of Sedlmayr’s works, this is the only text where Betti is mentioned. However, in this essay the references to the theory of the Italian jurist and philosopher are so numerous as to reveal him to be Sedlmayr’s privileged interlocutor. Betti, too, was an attentive reader of Sedlmayr. He even includes the Austrian scholar among the thinkers who were for him a “source of productive inspiration.” The profound impact of this inspiration may be gauged most particularly in Betti’s reflections on modern art in his General Theory of Interpretation. The present volume focuses on the long-distance dialogue that Betti and Sedlmayr established independently from each other, a dialogue that has previously gone unnoticed. The author, Luca Vargiu ([email protected]), reconstructs this dual, reciprocal reading, reevaluating the contributions of Betti and Sedlmayr to the lively debates in the field of art historical-hermeneutics. Reiner Wiehl has always drawn scholarly attention to the more strictly philosophical aspects of Rosenzweig's work. His essays can be put beside those of Jürgen Habermas, Hans-Georg Gadamer and Emmanuel Levinas. As a matter of fact his interpretation of "The Star of Redemption" is philosophically problematic, doubting and questioning, so that it has been particularly fruitful in the effects, i.e. in indicating to the scholars new hermeneutical ways.

En este trabajo presento un problema que afecta al programa neologicista que han defendido en varias ocasiones Crispin Wright y Bob Hale. En particular, argumento que Wright y Hale no han dado suficientes condiciones para separar las definiciones implícitas apropiadas como el principio de Hume de otras definiciones implícitas rivales como la aritmética de Peano de segundo orden. Sugiero, además, que esa tarea sólo puede realizarse adecuadamente si una de las condiciones propuestas es la condición de que toda definición implícita (...) sea unívoca. In this paper I consider a problem affecting the Neologicist Program advocated on many occasions by Bob Hale and Crispin Wright. In particular, I argue that Hale and Wright have not given enough conditions to separate appropriate implicit definitions such as Hume's Principle from rival implicit definitions like Second-Order Peano Arithmetic. I also suggest that this task can only be performed adequately if one of the proposed conditions is that every implicit definition be univocal. (shrink)

El propio concepto de “educación” nos proporciona una doble vía de acercamiento. Por un lado, estaría “ēdŭcāre”, el cual nos plantea una educación como instrucción y formación; por otro lado “ēdūcĕre”, que pone más énfasis en la función alumbradora del proceso educativo. Desde esta doble perspectiva y apoyándonos en la consideración poliana de la educación como “ayudar a crecer”, vemos la educación como una tarea que se torna ética en la medida que, en ambos supuestos, necesita de la responsabilidad tanto (...) del educador como del educando. El educador (padres, familia, profesionales de la educación, etc.) debe cumplir su función socializadora y alumbradora desde la responsabilidad paternofilial o profesional, para las cuales se han de preparar en todos los sentidos. El educando, por su parte, debe responsablemente hacerse cargo del interés por ser educado y por educar-se. En ello le va corresponder con la persona que está llamada a ser. En este sentido cobra importancia la educación entendida como “ayudar a crecer”, pues, en la esfera externa, iría dirigida a conseguir la socialización y la integración del individuo, como ciudadano, en un medio sociocultural atravesado por un conjunto de valores que el educando ha de conocer y respetar. Aquí, la figura del educador además adquiere la responsabilidad de ser ejemplo y modelo. En la esfera interna, desde un punto de vista más mayéutico, el educando, con la ayuda de los educadores, ha de querer alumbrar la persona que debe ser, en un movimiento de reactualización continua del acto de ser personal, a través del crecimiento personal, hasta ser la persona que se está llamada a ser. Ambas esferas conformarían así una educación integral de la persona. (shrink)

Aunque el uso no problematizado en el lenguaje ordinario de los términos "consenso" y "consentimiento" sugiere que debe haber alguna comprensión compartida de su significado, no hay un acuerdo generalizado sobre el uso de estos conceptos entre los filósofos políticos. De hecho, el significado filosófico de estos conceptos sigue siendo elusivo y controvertido; tal vez precisamente a causa de su amplitud y centralidad. Teniendo en cuenta los numerosos intentos de explicar satisfactoriamente consenso y consentimiento -que con el tiempo se han (...) vuelto más sofisticados-, este artículo recoge algunos usos filosóficos fundamentales de estos dos multifacéticos conceptos y sugiere una estrategia para bosquejar un mapa que parece un rompecabezas cuyas piezas están moldeadas de tal forma que se necesita un enfoque multidisciplinario para poder identificar adecuadamente sus significados e implicaciones. Although the unproblematic use of the terms "consensus" and "consent" in ordinary language suggests that there must be some shared understanding of their meaning, there is no widespread assent on the use of these concepts among political philosophers. In fact, the philosophical meaning of these concepts remains elusive and controversial, perhaps exactly because of their extension and centrality. Taking note of the numerous attempts to provide a satisfactory account of "consensus" and "consent" - that have become increasingly sophisticated in time - this article recollects some fundamental philosophical uses of the two many-faceted concepts, and suggests a strategy for delineating a map that looks like a puzzle, whose pieces are shaped in such a way that we need a multidisciplinary approach in order to adequately identify their meanings and implications. Los géneros literarios que los críticos han utilizado para calificar la obra de Virginia Woolf, _Orlando_, publicada en 1928, incluyen: la alegoría religiosa, la fábula, la novela policíaca, literatura de doppelgänger, cuentos diabólicos escoceses o la novela gótica. Todavía se discute si es un relato de ciencia ficción. Sin embargo, el tema principal es la identidad sexual del protagonista, quien cruza un “tiempo sin tiempo” y transforma su sexo y sexualidad a lo largo del recorrido de su alma. Este, es (...) un claro rechace a la estructura de las novelas victorianas, en las cuales dominan los personajes masculinos y escasean los femeninos. Orlando nace hombre para luego, con el pasar de los siglos – desde 1600, últimos años de la reina Isabel I, hasta el siglo XX, en el contexto político real de Inglaterra, el de las sufragistas, cuando se da su transformación en mujer y sobre todo en escritora. Pese a lo apenas mencionado, esta novela no es sexista. Unos de sus fines principales es exponer las necesidades de una dama de la época isabelina, los tropiezos masculinos y femeninos de la sociedad victoriana y los obstáculos inherentes a las obsesiones del yo, en que el lenguaje es determinante para la marcación de épocas. Según Virginia, la diferencia sexual viene dada por la educación, pero no pretende fomentar la dualidad hombre-mujer, sino redefinir la feminidad y proclamar a la vez que una mente debe ser andrógina. A negação por conceitos sólidos, flexibilidade, neotribalismos e nomadismo são aspectos que influenciam na formação dos sujeitos e das instituições em tempos líquido-modernos. Os sujeitos são estimulados a buscar constantemente o novo e isso impacta na formação de vínculos. Como decorrência da tendência de isolamento social e a demanda pela formação identitária, os indivíduos criaram mecanismos para suprir as necessidades de pertencimento. Um destes mecanismos são as neotribos, agrupamentos de indivíduos, em grande medida jovens, que se reúnem a partir de (...) objetivos e interesses compartilhados. Os jovens, de modo predominante, ocupam os espaços nas universidades, cujos padrões estáveis, fixos e duros também têm se colocado à prova. Os alunos buscam uma formação ágil, conectada com o mundo e personalizada. Para dar conta de tal demanda, um dos caminhos aligeirados propostos pelo mercado é a desagregação. Estes movimentos propiciam o surgimento de características segmentadas e frágeis nas universidades. A forma como se comunicam, a maneira como abordam suas funções, o modo como valorizam as pessoas, são indicadores dos aspectos da cultura acadêmica. Assim, propõe-se debater como a universidade, que tem sua anatomia fundada na solidez moderna, reage a não solidez da cultura contemporânea. The subjects are encouraged to constantly search for the new and this has an impact on the formation of social ties. As a result of the tendency of social isolation and the demand for identity formation, individuals created mechanisms to supply the needs of belonging. One of these mechanisms is the neotribes, groups of individuals, largely young, who come together based on shared goals and interests. Young people, predominantly, occupy spaces in universities, whose stable, fixed and hard standards have also been put to the test. Students seek agile training, connected with the world and personalized. To achieve with such demand, one of the easiest paths proposed by the market is the unbundling. These movements lead to the emergence of segmented and fragile characteristics in universities. The way they communicate, the way they approach their functions, the way they value people, are indicators of aspects of academic culture. Thus, it is proposed to debate how the university, which has its anatomy based on modern solidity, reacts to the non-solidity of contemporary culture. Se anima a los sujetos a buscar constantemente lo nuevo y esto repercute en la formación de vínculos. Como resultado de la tendencia al aislamiento social y la demanda de formación de identidad, los individuos crearon mecanismos para suplir las necesidades de pertenencia. Uno de estos son los neotribus, grupos de indivíduos que se unen en base a objetivos e intereses compartidos. Ellos ocupan espacios en las universidades, cuyos estándares estables, fijos y duros también se han puesto a prueba. Los estudiantes buscan una formación ágil, conectada con el mundo y personalizada. Para hacer frente a tal demanda, uno de los caminos más fáciles que propone el mercado es la desagregación. Estos movimientos conducen al surgimiento de características segmentadas y frágiles en las universidades. La forma en que se comunican, la forma en que valoran a las personas, son indicadores de aspectos de la cultura académica. Así, se propone debatir cómo la universidad, que tiene su anatomía basada en la solidez moderna, reacciona a la no solidez de la cultura contemporánea. Cómo laagencia femenina ha sido condicionada por el capitalismo. Este ensayo busca observarcómo los procesos de consumo y producción de masas han afectado a la construcciónde la agencia (...) femenina durante el periodo del capitalismo temprano. La ética ambiental nació como justa contestación a los excesos del antropocentrismo. Sin embargo, un énfasis obsesivo en lo ético y en lo ambiental, con el consiguiente olvido de lo antropológico, puede estar dañando la vida humana, la libertad de las personas y la vida en general. Abogamos aquí por la construcción de una ecología humana que vaya más allá y más al fondo que las éticas ambientales al uso. Defendemos que el humanismo es perfectamente compatible con el reconocimiento del (...) valor inherente de todos los seres naturales. Lo hacemos basándonos principalmente en algunas ideas de Hans Jonas, aunque rechazamos su heurística catastrofista. De él retomamos la idea de que existe una responsabilidad moral hacia los demás seres vivos, empezando por los más próximos en el tiempo y en el espacio, y hacia el libre florecimiento de las personas actuales. Con ello, también, se rebaja el peso de lo ético sobre nuestra acción ecológica. Esta ha de atender principalmente a criterios experienciales, antropológicos, científicos y de sentido común. Por último, defendemos que la política, la educación y la comunicación ambiental deben orientarse directamente hacia la libertad y el desarrollo virtuoso de las personas actuales, y no hacia el control de las mismas por culpabilización. El tránsito desde la ética ambiental hacia la ecología humana —concluimos— puede ser beneficioso tanto para las personas como para la naturaleza. (shrink)
