Natural language processing for legal document review: categorising deontic modalities in contracts.S. Georgette Graham, Hamidreza Soltani & Olufemi Isiaq - forthcoming - Artificial Intelligence and Law:1-22.
The contract review process can be a costly and time-consuming task for lawyers and clients alike, requiring significant effort to identify and evaluate the legal implications of individual clauses. To address this challenge, we propose the use of natural language processing techniques, specifically text classification based on deontic tags, to streamline the process. Our research question is whether natural language processing techniques, specifically dense vector embeddings, can help semi-automate the contract review process and reduce time and costs for legal professionals (...)

  2. The Anatomy of Corporate Fraud: A Comparative Analysis of High Profile American and European Corporate Scandals.Bahram Soltani - 2014 - Journal of Business Ethics 120 (2):251-274.
This paper presents a comparative analysis of three American and three European corporate failures. The first part of the analysis is based on a theoretical framework including six areas of ethical climate; tone at the top; bubble economy and market pressure; fraudulent financial reporting; accountability, control, auditing, and governance; and management compensation. The second and third parts consider the analysis of these cases from fraud perspective and in terms of firm-specific characteristics and environmental context. The research analyses shed light on (...)

  3. What does shape a topological atom?Hamidreza Joypazadeh & Shant Shahbazian - 2013 - Foundations of Chemistry 16 (1):63-75.
In this pedagogical communication after demonstrating the legitimacy for using the quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) to non-Coulombic systems, Hookean H2 +/H3 2+ species are used for AIM analysis. In these systems, in contrast to their Coulombic counterparts, electron density is atom-like and instead of expected two/three topological atoms, just a single topological atom emerges. This observation is used to demonstrate that what is really “seen” by the topological analysis of electron densities is the clustering of electrons. The (...)

Managerial Mindsets Toward Corporate Social Responsibility: The Case of Auto Industry in Iran.Ebrahim Soltani, Jawad Syed, Ying-Ying Liao & Abdullah Iqbal - 2015 - Journal of Business Ethics 129 (4):795-810.
Despite a plethora of empirical evidence on the potential role of senior management in the success of corporate social responsibility in Western-dominated organizational contexts, little attempt has been made to document the various managerial mindsets toward CSR in organizations in Muslim-dominated countries in the Middle East region. To address this existing lacuna of theoretical and empirical research in CSR management, this paper offers a qualitative case study of CSR in three manufacturing firms operating in Iran’s auto industry. Based on an (...)

The doctor-patient relationship: toward a conceptual re-examination.Hamidreza Namazi, Kiarash Aramesh & Bagher Larijani - 2016 - Journal of Medical Ethics and History of Medicine 9 (1).
The nature of the doctor-patient relationship as a keystone of care necessitates philosophical, psychological and sociological considerations. The present study investigates concepts related to these three critical views considered especially important. From the philosophical viewpoint, the three concepts of "the demands of ethics “,” ethical phenomenology and "the philosophy of the relationship" are of particular importance. From a psychological point of view, the five concepts of "communication behavior patterns", "psychic distance", "emotional quotient", "conflict between pain relief and truth-telling", and "body (...)

The silent speaker: A Nietzschean reading of Rūmī’s aesthetics of lyric poetry.Hamidreza Mahboobi Arani - 2023 - Asian Philosophy 33 (3):263-280.
Lyric poetry, often regarded as the epitome of subjectivity in the realm of artistic expression, emerges from the depths of the poet’s personal emotions. Hence, in the aesthetic landscape of the nineteenth-century Germany, it was excluded from the inventory of genuine art forms, all of which were deemed to be objective and disinterested. Associating lyric poetry with music in its origin and essence, Nietzsche extends his Schopenhauerian metaphysics of music to the lyric, making it a highly objective art reverberating from (...)

Pre-stimulus Alpha Activity Modulates Face and Object Processing in the Intra-Parietal Sulcus, a MEG Study.Narjes Soltani Dehaghani, Burkhard Maess, Reza Khosrowabadi, Reza Lashgari, Sven Braeutigam & Mojtaba Zarei - 2022 - Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 16.
Face perception is crucial in all social animals. Recent studies have shown that pre-stimulus oscillations of brain activity modulate the perceptual performance of face vs. non-face stimuli, specifically under challenging conditions. However, it is unclear if this effect also occurs during simple tasks, and if so in which brain regions. Here we used magnetoencephalography and a 1-back task in which participants decided if the two sequentially presented stimuli were the same or not in each trial. The aim of the study (...)

Iranian and American Moral Judgments for Everyday Dilemmas Are Mostly Similar.Aryan Yazdanpanah, Sarvenaz Soltani, Fatemeh Sadat Mirfazeli, Seyed Vahid Shariat, Amin Jahanbakhshi, Faraneh GhaffariHosseini, Kaveh Alavi, Parisa Hosseinpour, Parisa Javadnia & Jordan Grafman - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 12:640620.
Moral judgment is a complex cognitive process that partly depends upon social and individual cultural values. There have been various efforts to categorize different aspects of moral judgment, but most studies depend upon rare dilemmas. We recruited 25 subjects from Tehran, Iran, to rate 150 everyday moral scenarios developed by Knutson et al. Using exploratory factor analysis (EFA), we observed that the same moral dimensions (except socialness dimension) were driven by the same moral cognitive factors (norm violation, intention, and social (...)

Evaluating the Redistribution Policy and the Right to Social Welfare in Kant’s Philosophy.Hamidreza Saadat Niaki & Ali Fath Taheri - 2022 - Heythrop Journal 63 (1):84-95.
The notion of social welfare was created by the paradigm shift from duty‐based to right‐based morality, in which the satisfaction of human needs is a right in line with preserving human dignity. This paper investigates Kant’s view on social welfare in light of redistribution policy. Kant bases his political philosophy on external freedom. Notwithstanding the ethical principles of his philosophy, he is the first prominent thinker to clearly emphasize the necessity of a redistribution policy by the government toward providing for (...)

Having entered into the problem structuring methods, system dynamics (SD) is an approach, among systems’ methodologies, which claims to recognize the main structures of socio-economic behaviors. However, the concern for building or discovering strong philosophical underpinnings of SD, undoubtedly playing an important role in the modeling process, is a long-standing issue, in a way that there is a considerable debate about the assumptions or the philosophical foundations of it. In this paper, with a new perspective, we have explored theory of (...)

Graphical AbstractBy now it is well known that the SARS-COV-2 virus can affect and harm various organs of the body. However, the exact mechanisms for this phenomenon are still unknown. In article 2000198 Fatemeh Aliabadi et al. hypothesize that the body's secretion of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), a molecule that is involved in several inflammation and immunity pathways, may lead to a cytokine storm causing a variety of side effects.
