How can a set throw itself into itself and remain a set and an element of itself at the same time? This is obviously impossible, as Bertrand Russell has prominently shown. One simply cannot pic a trash-can up and throw it into itself. Now, Hegel, Benjamin, and Badiou take a different position on the subject when they refer time and time again to "concrete universality" as an oxymoronic structure that touches ontologically upon their theoretical philosophies as well as their (...) practical philosophies. The article tries to show how both philosophers affirm the mentioned paradox as central for the understanding of Dialectical Materialism in its classical as well as in its contemporary understanding. It is often thought that metaphysical grounding underwrites a distinctive sort of metaphysical explanation. However, it would be a mistake to think that all metaphysical explanations are underwritten by metaphysical grounding. In service of this claim, I offer a novel kind of metaphysical explanation called metaphysical explanation by constraint, examples of which have been neglected in the literature. I argue that metaphysical explanations by constraint are not well understood as grounding explanations.

It is more and more often acknowledged that plants are sensitive organisms which perceive, value, learn, remember, solve problems, make decisions and communicate to each other in actively acquiring information on their environment. However, the fact that many complex patterns of plant behaviour exhibit cognitive skills, usually ascribed to human and non human animals, has not been fully assessed. This article intends to show the theoretical obstacles which may have prevented experimenting on such behavioural/cognitive phenomena in plants.

The argument from absence of analysis (AAA) infers primitivism about some x from the absence of a reductive analysis ofx. But philosophers use the word ‘primitive’ to mean many distinct things. I argue that there is a robust sense of ‘primitive’ present in the metaphysics literature that cannot be inferred via the AAA. Successfully demonstrating robust primitivism about somexrequires showing two things at once: that a reduction ofxis not possible and that an explanatorily deep characterization ofxis not available. In order (...) to secure this second explanatory claim, the AAA must wrongly assume that reductive analysis is our only source of explanatory characterization. I argue that this is false by offering a distinct way of providing explanatory characterizations backed by suitably understood metaphysical constraints. While there remains a minimal sense of ‘primitive’ inferable via the AAA, this sense is exhausted by the denial of reduction. With minimal primitivism as its target, the AAA is uninteresting. The article on my theory of descriptions by Mr. Lejewski raises two points. One is as to the copula. I do not quite understand why it is thought that an ambiguity in the meaning of the word “is” is relevant in regard to my theory of descriptions. There are many problems in regard to which it is relevant. I have mentioned one of these in criticizing Hegel in Our Knowledge of the External World on p. 39 n of the original (...) edition . But, although I have read Mr. Lejewski's argument several times, it still seems to me quite clear that in “Scott is the author of Waverley” the “is” is that of identity. Nor have I been able to understand why he considers his theory of descriptions preferable to mine. I am, however, quite willing to believe that there is some point that I have missed in his discussion. (shrink)

The survival enhancing propensity (SEP) account has a crucial role to play in the analysis of proper function. However, a central feature of the account, its specification of the proper environment to which functions are relativized, is seriously underdeveloped. In this paper, I argue that existent accounts of proper environment fail because they either allow too many or too few characters to count as proper functions. While SEP accounts retain their promise, they are unworkable because of their inability to specify (...) this important feature. However, I suggest that this problem can be overcome by the application of a new strategy for specifying proper environment that is grounded in the operation of natural selection and I conclude by offering a first approximation of such an account. Discutant les interprétations de Michel Foucault et celles de Karl Marx, il montre comment la botanique naissante a été mise au service de la première théorie systématique du capitalisme, faisant « du » blé le modèle originaire de l’équivalent général. Se sont alors fixés pour longtemps non seulement les dispositifs de naturalisation des rapports (...) sociaux et politiques, mais aussi la fabrique de nature elle-même, celle qui a vu l’ontologie paysanne et plurielle des blés remplacée par une machine de production. Or la solution n’est pas de valoriser l’échelon local au détriment du global en reconduisant les topoi philosophiques vantant les petites républiques ou promouvant la participation, mais de prendre les décisions adéquates à l’échelle pertinente. À la fin du siècle dernier, Le Commerce et le Gouvernement a été l’objet d’une interprétation devenue dominante, qui érige Condillac en précurseur du néolibéralisme. Cet article étudie la succession des biais historiques, méthodiques et philosophiques qui ont conduit à transformer la définition condillacienne de la valeur en théorie de la mathématisation des préférences en fonction des utilités marginales des marchandises. Alors que Condillac est animé par l’ambition explicite de bien faire la langue économique, cette interprétation omet de réinscrire ce (...) texte dans la visée d’ensemble de l’œuvre, qui, dès l’ Essai sur l’origine des connaissances humaines, se voue à étudier les conditions logiques et historiques de l’institution des langues. Or Le Commerce et le Gouvernement affirme qu’une langue économique exacte est une analyse du jugement de valeur. Condillac, auteur d’une Logique, d’un Art de penser et d’un Art de raisonner, donne au moins deux ou trois définitions différentes du jugement. Aucune ne peut créditer la réduction du jugement de valeur à un calcul sur les prix. Ce déplacement majeur repose sur un vice argumentatif analysé par Condillac lui-même comme le propre de certains faux systèmes, la « réalisation » des abstractions, soit, ici, la transformation d’une réflexion sur les principes du jugement de valeur en relation d’équivalence arithmétique entre des choses, les marchandises. En l’occurrence, cette erreur logique se combine aussi à une illusion d’un autre ordre, la confusion des valeurs et des prix, que Le Commerce et le Gouvernement dénonce comme constitutive des sociétés marchandes. Les bénéfices tirés par les auteurs néolibéraux de leur lecture apparaissent ainsi clairement, notamment une narration de l’histoire de l’économie qui minore les œuvres d’Adam Smith et de Karl Marx, et, avec elles, les analyses des liens de la valeur et du travail. Mais, paradoxalement, cet article découvre aussi ce que la critique de Condillac par Marx doit à Say, et invite en définitive à relire Le Commerce et le Gouvernement en traquant ce que, dans la langue de Condillac, un « jugement », et un « sujet » peuvent bien signifier. No longer are there accusations of ?imperial media,?; as newspapers, radio, and television news consumption decline. Media response is to look to ethics. Media should learn that corporate consciousness is less important in guiding the medium than is service to public or audience.

This paper describes the French initiative in materials research against both a national and an international background, in an attempt to disentangle the local circumstances, which prompted this governmental initiative, and to characterize the specific profile of materials research in France. In presenting a biography of the interdisciplinary program in materials research (PIRMAT), we argue that: i) the PIRMAT denotes a failure of the French science policy in materials research; ii) the leadership of the CNRS led to a specific style (...) of research, quite different from the engineering approach of Materials Science and Engineering, and characteristic of a French style in materials research. This volume of Bertrand Russell's Collected Papers finds Russell focused on writing Principia Mathematica during 1905-08. The volume's 80-page introduction covers the evolution of his logic from 1896 until 1909, when volume I of Principia went to the printer.

Public collective hunger strikes take place in complex social and political contexts, require medical attention and present ethical challenges to physicians. Empirical research, the ethical debate to date and existing guidelines by the World Medical Association focus almost exclusively on hunger strikes in detention. However, the public space differs substantially with regard to the conditions for the provision of health care and the diverse groups of healthcare providers or stakeholders involved. By reviewing empirical research on the experience of health professionals (...) with public collective hunger strikes, we identified the following ethical challenges: (1) establishment of a trustful physician–striker relationship, (2) balancing of medico‐ethical principles in medical decision‐making, (3) handling of loyalty conflicts and (4) preservation of professional independence and the risk of political instrumentalization. Some of these challenges have already been described and discussed, yet not contextualized for public collective strikes, while others are novel. The presence of voluntary physicians may offer opportunities for a trustful relationship and, hence, for ethical treatment decisions. According to our findings, it requires more attention to how to realise autonomous medical decisions in the complex context of a dynamic, often unstructured and politically charged setting, which ethical norms should shape the professional role of voluntary physicians, and what is the influence of the hunger strikers' collective on individual healthcare decisions. Our article can serve as a starting point for further ethical discussion. It can also provide the basis for the development of potential guidelines to support health professionals involved in public collective hunger strikes. (shrink)
