This review examines Paul Goldin’s book The Art of Chinese Philosophy: Eight Classical Texts and How to Read Them. The book gives interpretations of eight texts from the classical period that respond to the same set of central questions and each other’s arguments. Goldin thus begins the book by asking the basic question "What are we reading?" while also considering why it has been so rarely asked.
