Temporal representation in the control of movement.Daniel M. Corcos - 1994 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 17 (2):206-206.
Theories of the representation of specific kinetic and spatiotem-poral features of movement range from the explicit assertion that temporal aspects of movement are not represented to the idea that they are represented and that they have neurophysiological correlates. Jeannerod's thesis is that mental and visual images have common mechanisms and that there is a link between the image to move and the mechanisms involved with movement. The target article takes the position that certain parameters are coded in motor representations but (...)

Managing Sick Leave in the University: Bureaucracy and Discretion.Chrystal Jaye, Lauralie Richard, Claire Amos & Geoff Noller - 2021 - Humanistic Management Journal 6 (2):211-227.
This study examined the challenges for supervisors and managers of managing sick leave within a New Zealand university. We used a qualitative research design, interviewing 20 university staff across the academic and service divisions who had managerial roles. We applied Habermas’ distinctions of technical instrumental, practical relational, and emancipatory critical transformative interests, and his twofold distinction of system and lifeworld to our analysis. The primary findings suggest that while the technical instrumental discourses were dominant within the university bureaucracy, managers drew (...)

Strategies for the control of voluntary movements with one mechanical degree of freedom.Gerald L. Gottlieb, Daniel M. Corcos & Gyan C. Agarwal - 1989 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 12 (2):189-210.
A theory is presented to explain how accurate, single-joint movements are controlled. The theory applies to movements across different distances, with different inertial loads, toward targets of different widths over a wide range of experimentally manipulated velocities. The theory is based on three propositions. (1) Movements are planned according to “strategies” of which there are at least two: a speed-insensitive (SI) and a speed-sensitive (SS) one. (2) These strategies can be equated with sets of rules for performing diverse movement tasks. (...)

The Complexities of “Minding the Gap”: Perceived Discrepancies Between Values and Behavior Affect Well-Being.Megan Chrystal, Johannes A. Karl & Ronald Fischer - 2019 - Frontiers in Psychology 10.
Research on self-determination theory and clinical models such as acceptance and commitment therapy has shown that behaving in line with our values is key to maintaining healthy well-being. Combining work on values and experimental studies on moral hypocrisy and well-being, we experimentally tested how behaving incongruently with values affects well-being. We hypothesized that discrepancies between how one thinks one should have behaved and how one reported one did behave would be more detrimental to well-being when the behaviors were value-expressive and (...)

Being enjoyably challenged is the key to an enjoyable gaming experience: an experimental approach in a first-person shooter game.Anne Corcos - 2018 - Socioaffective Neuroscience and Psychology 8 (1).
Applied to video games, Csikszentmihalyi’s work on flow evidences that a positive gaming experience is intrinsically self-rewarding and primarily determined by the skill/challenge balance. A multi-layered measure of enjoyment is built to take these components into account. Gamers were asked to report the concentration-enjoyment they experienced during a first-person shooter game, and to better assess the gap between skill and challenge, the challenge enjoyment was also rated. Along with concentration level, concentration enjoyment is used to build a gaming experience typology (...)

    Conservative or nonconservative control schemes.Daniel M. Corcos & Kerstin Pfann - 1995 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 18 (4):747-749.
The conservative strategy proposed by the authors suggests a solution of the degrees-of-freedom problem of the controller. However, several simple motor control tasks cannot be explained by this strategy. A nonconservative strategy, in which more parameters of the control signal vary, can account for these simple motor tasks. However, the simplicity that distinguishes the proposed model from many others is lost.

    Approche psychosomatique des conduites addictives alimentaires.Maurice Corcos - 2005 - Dialogue: Families & Couples 3 (3):97-109.

Both Peirce and Popper thought about the darwinian theory of evolution. From different perspectives they coincided in stating that natural selection is a non productive factor of biological evolution. Each of them put forward an active agent other than natural selection in the evolutionary process.

    The real objective of Mendel's paper.Floyd V. Monaghan & Alain F. Corcos - 1990 - Biology and Philosophy 5 (3):267-292.
According to the traditional account Mendel's paper on pea hybrids reported a study of inheritance and its laws. Hence, Mendel came to be known as The Father of Genetics. This paper demonstrates that, in fact, Mendel's objective in his research was finding the empirical laws which describe the formation of hybrids and the development of their offspring over several generations. Having found these laws (and not the laws of inheritance that he is generally credited with) he proposed a theoretical scheme (...)

The 'obligation' to screen and its effect on autonomy.Yvonne Lau & Chrystal Jaye - 2009 - Journal of Bioethical Inquiry 6 (4):495-505.
In the United States, disease screening is offered to the public as a consumer service. It has been proposed that the act of “consumption” is a manifestation of agency and that the decision to consume is an exercise of autonomy. The enthusiasm of the American public for disease screening and the expansion in the demand for all sorts of disease screening in recent years can be viewed as an expression of such autonomy. Here, we argue that the enthusiasm for disease (...)

The duty of care and the right to be cared for: is there a duty to treat the unvaccinated?Zohar Lederman & Shalom Corcos - 2024 - Medicine, Health Care and Philosophy 27 (1):81-91.
Vaccine hesitancy or refusal has been one of the major obstacles to herd immunity against Covid-19 in high-income countries and one of the causes for the emergence of variants. The refusal of people who are eligible for vaccination to receive vaccination creates an ethical dilemma between the duty of healthcare professionals (HCPs) to care for patients and their right to be taken care of. This paper argues for an extended social contract between patients and society wherein vaccination against Covid-19 is (...)

Rapid Review and Meta-Meta-Analysis of Self-Guided Interventions to Address Anxiety, Depression, and Stress During COVID-19 Social Distancing.Ronald Fischer, Tiago Bortolini, Johannes Alfons Karl, Marcelo Zilberberg, Kealagh Robinson, André Rabelo, Lucas Gemal, Daniel Wegerhoff, Megan Chrystal & Paulo Mattos - 2020 - Frontiers in Psychology 11:563876.
We conducted a rapid review and quantitative summary of meta-analyses that have examined interventions which can be used by individuals during quarantine and social distancing to manage anxiety, depression, stress and subjective well-being. A literature search yielded 34 meta-analyses (total number of studies k = 1,390, n = 145,744) that were summarized. Overall, self-guided interventions showed small to medium effects in comparison to control groups. In particular, self-guided therapeutic approaches (including cognitive-behavioral, mindfulness, and acceptance-based interventions), selected positive psychology interventions, and (...)

Borderline Personality Disorder in Adolescence as a Generalization of Disorganized Attachment.Raphaële Miljkovitch, Anne-Sophie Deborde, Annie Bernier, Maurice Corcos, Mario Speranza & Alexandra Pham-Scottez - 2018 - Frontiers in Psychology 9:373745.
Several researchers point to disorganized attachment as a core feature of borderline personality disorder (BPD). However, recent studies suggest that specific internal working models (IWMs) of each parent combine to account for child outcomes and that a secure relationship with one parent can protect against the deleterious effects of an insecure relationship with the other parent. It was thus hypothesized that adolescents with BPD are more likely to be disorganized with both their parents, whereas non-clinical controls are more secure with (...)

General practitioners’ ethical decision-making: Does being a patient themselves make a difference?Katherine Helen Hall, Jessica Michael, Chrystal Jaye & Jessica Young - 2018 - Clinical Ethics 13 (4):199-208.
There is very little literature on the actual decision-making frameworks used by general practitioners with respect to ethical issues and virtually none on the impact of personal experiences of illness on this. This study aimed to investigate what these frameworks might be and if and how they were altered by doctors’ own illness experience. Twenty general practitioners were recruited, 10 having had a previous serious medical illness and 10 having no such history. They participated in a semi-structured interview, including case (...)

The control process is represented in both the inferior and superior parietal lobules.David E. Vaillancourt, Mary A. Mayka & Daniel M. Corcos - 2004 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 27 (1):51-52.
Glover postulates that the inferior parietal lobule (IPL), along with the frontal lobes and basal ganglia, mediates planning, while the superior parietal lobule (SPL), coupled with motor processes in the cerebellum, regulates the control process. We demonstrate that the control process extends beyond the cerebellum and SPL into regions hypothesized to represent planning.

The real objective of Mendel's paper: A response to Monaghan and Corcos[REVIEW]Raphael Falk & Sahotra Sarkar - 1991 - Biology and Philosophy 6 (4):447-451.
Mendel's work in hybridization is ipso facto a study in inheritance. He is explicit in his interest to formulate universal generalizations, and at least in the case of the independent segregation of traits, he formulated his conclusions in the form of a law. Mendel did not discern, however, the inheritance of traits from that of the potential for traits. Choosing to study discrete non-overlapping traits, this did not hamper his efforts.
