Returning Genetic Research Results to Individuals: Points‐to‐Consider.Gaile Renegar, Christopher J. Webster, Steffen Stuerzebecher, Lea Harty, Susan E. Ide, Beth Balkite, Taryn A. Rogalski‐Salter, Nadine Cohen, Brian B. Spear & Diane M. Barnes - 2006 - Bioethics 20 (1):24-36.
This paper is intended to stimulate debate amongst stakeholders in the international research community on the topic of returning individual genetic research results to study participants. Pharmacogenetics and disease genetics studies are becoming increasingly prevalent, leading to a growing body of information on genetic associations for drug responsiveness and disease susceptibility with the potential to improve health care. Much of these data are presently characterized as exploratory (non‐validated or hypothesis‐generating). There is, however, a trend for research participants to be permitted (...)

21% versus 79%: Explaining philosophy’s gender disparities with stereotyping and identification.Debbie Ma, Clennie Webster, Nanae Tachibe & Robert Gressis - 2018 - Philosophical Psychology 31 (1):68-88.
This study tests the hypothesis that the perception of philosophy as a male-oriented discipline contributes to the pronounced gender disparity within the field. To assess the hypothesis, we determined the extent to which individuals view philosophy as masculine, and whether individual differences in this correspond with greater identification with philosophy. We also tested whether identification with philosophy correlated to interest in it. We discovered, first, that the more women view philosophy as masculine, the less they identify with it, and second, (...)

Henry More and Descartes: Some New Sources.C. Webster - 1969 - British Journal for the History of Science 4 (4):359-377.
From the time of the publication of Henry More's first work, the collection of poems, ΨγΧΩΔΙΑ Platonica , Platonism provided the dominant theme in his philosophy. At Cambridge, More, his colleague, Ralph Cudworth, and their disciples, were responsible for a considerable revival of English Platonism, which became an important factor in late seventeenth-century natural philosophy. This movement is noted for its active and influential opposition to the mechanical world view, characterized in the writings of Hobbes and Descartes.

Harvey's De Generatione: Its Origins and Relevance to the Theory of Circulation.C. Webster - 1967 - British Journal for the History of Science 3 (3):262-274.
De generationewas the last of the three works published by William Harvey during his lifetime. Although this work on generation was most ambitious, being the product of prolonged and detailed researches, it has received relatively little attention from modern writers. It is generally felt that this work, like William Gilbert'sDe mundo, departs significantly from the more pronounced empirical approach to science which characterized Harvey's first publication,De motu cordis. De generationeshows that Harvey regarded reference to teleological and vitalistic principles as necessary (...)

The value of Big Data in government: The case of ‘smart cities’.C. William R. Webster & Karl Löfgren - 2020 - Big Data and Society 7 (1).
The emergence of Big Data has added a new aspect to conceptualizing the use of digital technologies in the delivery of public services and for realizing digital governance. This article explores, via the ‘value-chain’ approach, the evolution of digital governance research, and aligns it with current developments associated with data analytics, often referred to as ‘Big Data’. In many ways, the current discourse around Big Data reiterates and repeats established commentaries within the eGovernment research community. This body of knowledge provides (...)

    Euclid's Optics and Geometrical Astronomy.Colin Webster - 2014 - Apeiron 47 (4):526-551.
This paper seeks to demonstrate that propositions 23–27 of the Euclidian Optics originated in the context of geometrical astronomy. These entries, which deal with the geometry of spheres and rays, present material that overlaps considerably with propositions 1–3 of Aristarchus of Samos’ On the Sizes and Distances of the Sun and the Moon. While all these theorems deal with material that could conceivably be native to celestial illumination, the proofs do not work for binocular vision. It therefore seems probable that (...)

Closing the Barn Door: The Effect of Parental Supervision on Canadian Children's Online Privacy.Cheryl Webster & Valerie Steeves - 2008 - Bulletin of Science, Technology and Society 28 (1):4-19.
Empirical data from a large sample of Canadian youth aged 13 to 17 years suggest that, although the current privacy policy framework is having a positive effect on the extent to which young people are complying with the types of behavior promoted by adults as privacy protective, its primary focus on parental supervision is inadequate to fully protect children's online privacy. Respondents with high levels of either social interaction or identity play are more likely than those with lower levels to (...)

Evolving standards and regulation: Exploring the development and provision of closed circuit television in the United Kingdom.C. William R. Webster - 2004 - Knowledge, Technology & Policy 17 (2):82-103.
This article explores the emergence of standards and regulation associated with the provision of Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) surveillance systems in the United Kingdom. It argues that despite the intrusive and controlling nature of CCTV technology there is limited formal intervention in the form of legislation, governing its introduction and use. Instead government has sought to influence the regulation of the technology indirectly through its ability to shape and govern policy networks in the policy arena. In doing so, it is (...)
