One of the most debated questions in psychology and cognitive science is the nature and the functioning of the mental processes involved in deductive reasoning. However, all existing theories refer to a specific deductive domain, like syllogistic, propositional or relational reasoning.Our goal is to unify the main types of deductive reasoning into a single set of basic procedures. In particular, we bring together the microtheories developed from a mental models perspective in a single theory, for which we provide a formal (...) foundation. We validate the theory through a computational model (UNICORE) which allows fine‐grained predictions of subjects' performance in different reasoning domains.The performance of the model is tested against the performance of experimental subjects—as reported in the relevant literature—in the three areas of syllogistic, relational and propositional reasoning. The computational model proves to be a satisfactory artificial subject, reproducing both correct and erroneous performance of the human subjects. Moreover, we introduce a developmental trend in the program, in order to simulate the performance of subjects of different ages, ranging from children (3–6) to adolescents (8–12) to adults (>21). The simulation model performs similarly to the subjects of different ages.Our conclusion is that the validity of the mental model approach is confirmed for the deductive reasoning domain, and that it is possible to devise a unique mechanism able to deal with the specific subareas. Cantor showed that there are infinite sets that do not have one-to-one correspondences between them. The standard understanding of this result is that it shows that there are different sizes of infinity. This paper challenges this standard understanding, and argues, more generally, that we do not have any reason to think that there are different sizes of infinity. Two arguments are given against the claim that Cantor established that there are different such sizes: one involves an analogy between Cantor’s result (...) and Russell’s paradox, another is more direct. We develop a Sylow theory for stable groups satisfying certain additional conditions (2-finiteness, solvability or smallness) and show that their maximal p-subgroups are locally finite and conjugate. Furthermore, we generalize a theorem of Baer-Suzuki on subgroups generated by a conjugacy class of p-elements.

This article, originally meant for an Auroville publication, consists mainly, besides the quotations, of a wide range of suggestions related to a transcultural approach to various questions raised by transdisciplinary research. All these suggestions converge on a central focus; the virtual reality of a subject/object interaction that eludes narrow disciplinary restrictions as well as rigid cultural definitions. Here, significantly, etymology seems to lead towards mythical cultural watersheds, just as philology has been offering clues to some fundamental philosophical discoveries, from Nietsche (...) to G. Colli. The recent impact of Orientalist studies leads further into the same initiatic dimension, wherein metaphysics, ontology, aesthetics, linguistics, cosmology and psychology, all blend in a continuum of psychic experience, while variations of conscious awareness could only be described, and not sharply differentiated. All this would point, not only to the emergence of new cognitive methods, but also to correspondingly adequate means of expression. A transcultural approach could, moreover, provide vital links between today's originality and the spiritual traditions of the past, adding thus a sense of cultural continuity to our endeavours in understanding evolution. A reflexão parte da tarefa que Benjamin atribui aos que estão vivos: originar um verdadeiro “estado de exceção”. Compreende-se que essa é a tarefa primeira de uma Educação Histórica ética e estética. O artigo está organizado em três partes que compreendem os três elementos indissociáveis que constituem os primeiros movimentos no sentido de superar o “estado de Exceção” da violência sem memória. Na primeira parte, discutimos, a partir de Adorno, o “estado de exceção” da violência sem memória e reafirmamos o (...) dever de memória que se opõe a barbárie. Na segunda parte, comentamos, seguindo Levinas, a ética da responsabilidade. Na terceira, analisamos a estética do Eros contraeducativo de Gur-Ze’ev. Conclui-se que a postura de um pensar histórico ético e estético perpassa a recusa de esquecer e o desenvolvimento de uma atitude crítica para consigo mesmo, para com o Outro, e finalmente para com a realidade. The role played by the symmetric structure of a group of finite Morley rank without involutions in the proof by contradiction of Frécon 2018 was put in evidence in Poizat 2018; indeed, this proof consists in the construction of a symmetric space of dimension two (“a plane”), and then in showing that such a plane cannot exist.To a definable symmetric subset of such a group are associated symmetries and transvections, that we undertake here to study in the abstract, without mentioning (...) a group envelopping them. This leads us to consider axiomatically defined structures that we callsymmetrons(preferably todyadic symmetric setsas was done in Lawson & Lim 2004).Glauberman's$Z^*$-Theorem allows to elucidate completely the structure of the finite symmetrons: each of them is isomorphic to the set of symmetries associated to a symmetric subspace of a finite group without involutions, which is far from being uniquely determined. In fact, there exist non-isomorphic finite groups which have the same symmetries, and also finite symmetrons which are not isomorphic to the symmetries of a group.The situation is not so clear in the case of symmetrons of finite Morley rank, or even algebraic, which are the main objects of study of this paper. But in spite of the fact that a symmetron be a structure much weaker that a group, we can extend to symmetrons some well-known results concerning groups of finite Morley rank: chain condition, decomposition into connected components, characterisation of the generic definable subsets, elliptic generation, etc. These properties are new even in the case of a symmetric subspace of a group, and allow to bypass the computations made by Frécon during the construction of his paradoxical plane.Moreover, assuming the Algebricity Conjecture, we generalize Glauberman's Theorem to the finite Morley rank context. The paper aims to sketch Kant’s response to the mind-body problem in his first work, Thoughts on the true estimation of living forces (1747). This is accomplished by first examining the origins of the problem in Descartes, then exploring the traditional responses to the problem, occasionalism, pre-established harmony, and physical influx. Finally, the paper positions Kant as a proponent of physical influx and highlights the unique features and challenges of his perspective.

The purpose of the review is to provide a descriptive analysis of Gottfried Gabriel's book, focusing on the main doctrines of Kant.

Dans cet article, j’examine comment des philosophes tels que Frege, Whitehead, Quine et Wittgenstein recourent, chacun à leur manière, à l’expérience de traduction pour aborder les épineuses questions du sens et de la relation pensée/langage. Alors qu’à partir des xviie et xviiie siècles la philosophie commence à s’écrire dans les langues nationales, rompant avec le « monolinguisme » hérité du logos grec de ses origines, la question du relativisme linguistique ne pouvait que conduire à celle plus cruciale encore du relativisme (...) conceptuel. Je m’attarde tout particulièrement sur la manière dont Quine et Wittgenstein ont tenté de sortir du paradoxe de l’unicité/universalité de la pensée et de la diversité de l’expression de celle-ci. J’indique également ce qui constitue pour moi la spécificité et les exigences de la traduction du texte philosophique. (shrink)

Le Social Science Translation Project a vu le jour à l'initiative de l'American Council of Learned Societies. Il constitue une expérience unique dans son genre et a réuni des traducteurs, des chercheurs en sciences sociales, des éditeurs et des journalistes venus de Chine, de France, de Russie et des États-Unis. Ce projet a donné naissance à une série de « recommandations » qui attirent l'attention des éditeurs et des chercheurs sur la complexité du processus de traduction et sur les précautions (...) à prendre lorsqu'il s'agit de traduire des textes de sciences humaines. Il constitue également une sorte d'antidote à l'hégémonie de l'anglais, et dans cette optique, encourage la traduction à partir d'autres langues que l'anglais, tout en recommandant vivement aux chercheurs d'écrire dans leur propre langue.The Social Science Translation Project was created at the initiative of the American Council of Learned Societies. It is a unique experience of its kind, bringing together translators, social scientists, publishers and journalists from China, France, Russia and the United States. This project has spawned a series of "recommendations" that attract the attention of editors and researchers on the complexity of the translation process and the precautions to take when it comes to translating texts in the humanities. It is also a kind of antidote to the hegemony of English, and in this regard encourages the translation from other languages ​​than English, while urging researchers write in their own language.
