O texto parte da parábola do bom samaritano para discorrer sobre a contribuição que uma pessoa pode dar para atenuar o sofrimento de uma outra e, em contrapartida, a violência que significa a indiferença ante a dor alheia. Essa parábola ensina que se deve dar especial atenção às pessoas mais frágeis e menos favorecidas da sociedade e que o próximo é a pessoa que está a seu alcance e que esteja padecendo com sua própria miséria, não importando se é (...) um desconhecido ou mesmo um inimigo. Acrescenta que a mobilização para ajudar envolve sacrifício pessoal, mas quando é motivada por amor, não depende nem gera um desejo de retribuição para si. (shrink)

The author defends the thesis that Pascal’s use of sentir offers an important entrance to his perception of the human being, while explaining Pascal’s anthropology as an experience-oriented and love-focused understanding of human existence. This understanding of Pascal is based on the reconstruction of an alternative context of interpretation. Not the early modern debates on rationality, but the medieval authors that inspired Port-Royal is taken as the main reference. Reading Pascal’s texts from the use of sentire by Bernard of Clairvaux, (...) Bonaventure and Duns Scotus, offers a different perspective on the relation between body, will and knowledge in his thought. This alternative interpretation leads to a re-orientation on the relevance of his thought for actual debates on modernity. (shrink)

O Dossiê Artes e Oficinas: incursões na filosofia de Deleuze-Guattari foi concebido no mesmo movimento de discussão do legado do pensamento deleuziano, cujo propósito ultrapassa o ensejo de uma simples homenagem e pretende intensificar as experimentações conceituais para vislumbrar, na criação artística, um disparador de encontros ético-político-estéticos, o que confere ao Dossiê uma abordagem transdisciplinar da filosofia de Deleuze - e também Guattari - com vias a favorecer as interfaces entre a filosofia e as artes, recuperando a junção dos afectos e dos perceptos, tal como foram apresentados pelos autores em muitas dos seus escritos, dentre os quais destacamos Qu'est-ce que la filosophie?.O motivo dos artigos que compõem o presente Dossiê são as artes, considerando que essas manifestações são abordadas conforme dois eixos: das oficinas de criação e da lógica do sentido; ou seja, a poiética é considerada em sua autonomia na produção de experimentações do pensamento, por isso, não se trata de uma leitura estética, aliás, não é a intepretação das obras de arte que estão em discussão, mas, antes, a possibilidade das artes esgotarem as fixações de sentidos do mundo contemporâneo que instauram a crise nas mais variadas esferas da vida. Deleuze e Guattari vislumbram nas artes uma política menor, pertinente a mobilização dos afectos e dos perceptos graças as mobilizações engendradas pelos signos artísticos. Assim, apostamos na articulação da clínica, da crítica, das artes e da política, tendo em vista a abertura de novos espaços, contribuindo para o aparecimento de práticas de liberação dos fluxos que poderão fazer variar o pensamento.O que pode ser esperado das oficinas de criação em artes é a invenção de procedimentos diferentes que potencializem os corpos, mobilizando-os para encontrar nos blocos de perceptos e afectos da criação artística o arrancar "o percepto das percepções do objeto, [...], arrancar o afecto das afecções", provocando fluxos de desejo a abrirem a realidade a novos possíveis. Os pensadores franceses oferecem uma rica abrangência com relação as artes e que acreditamos estar contemplada nos artigos do Dossiê, a saber, que a filosofia como criação de conceitos está conectada - ousamos dizer: acoplada - ao plano de imanência "que deve ser considerado pré-filosófico", porque a atividade conceitual vislumbra a apreensão de uma realidade não conceitual composta pelas criações artísticas, por isso, os pensadores concluíram afirmando que "o não-filosófico está talvez mais no coração da filosofia do que a própria filosofia".A aglutinação dos artigos, que apresentaremos a seguir, propõe a composição de zonas de vizinhança entre conceitos da filosofia em conexões com os perceptos e os afectos com relação as artes, não os confundindo com percepções e sentimentos. Ora, longe da ambição do dogmatismo filosófico, aqui a filosofia é tomada como conceito e devir, permitindo vislumbrar experimentações do pensamento, no encontro com o seu fora, ao entrar na composição de um plano de imanência, que poderá ser construído junto às criações artísticas. As escritas reunias neste Dossiê se processam em meio a produção de um pensar teórico-poiético a partir das artes e das oficinas, traçando divergências convergentes com a filosofia da diferença. The growing scholarly debate on emotions and the development of Pentecostal and Charismatic churches in the Global South are just two reasons that urge systematic theology to relate more concretely to faith experiences. Potkay and others present joy as a typical Christian emotion, but it is not a key theme in systematic theology, although it plays far more prominent a role in spiritual and practical theological works. In this paper, the author presents the understandings of joy from the perspectives of (...) Blaise Pascal, A.A. van Ruler and Pentecostals from Ecuador and explores the implications for theological anthropology. Based on the study of these three perspectives, the author defends the thesis that joy offers a new focus in the field of theological anthropology that places different traditional theological perspectives on the human being in a fresh relation to each other and lays a foundation for a theological contribution to emotion studies. Hans Christian Andersen is a cultural icon, and his fairy tales are famous around the world. But despite the positive ring to this description, his status as a canonized author poses a challenge when he is passed on to new generations of readers. In this article, we show examples of how this challenge reveals itself in Danish primary school teaching where Andersen is an obligatory figure in the subject Danish where he is frequently framed as a national romantic author of (...) morally unambiguous texts. Taking the current use of “The Ugly Duckling” (1844) in primary school teaching materials as a point of departure, we aim to show Andersen’s potential to be presented as an element in primary school teaching that draws on dialogic inquiries rooted in Philosophy with Children. Philosophical inquiries are characterized by an open mindset that incite teachers as well as school children to engage with the rich ethical themes and literary qualities of Andersen’s fairy tales. We conclude the article with our own inquiry manual to “The Ugly Duckling” to illustrate a way to overcome the current hegemonic framing of Andersen and reopen his fairy tale for future discussions and interpretations. In order to enrich this debate, the authors study the discourses of different groups of Christian academics and master's students in francophone Africa. This article describes the process of reconstructing and analyzing the discourse of a group of master's students from Abidjan with the help of group model building and focus groups. Three characteristic features that emerge from this discourse include the foundational position of faith, the central role of truth, (...) and the ambiguous connotations of the term “science” in this context. The reconstructed discourse is then brought into conversation with the North Atlantic debate, with a special focus on the concept of scientism. (shrink)

A Companion to the Spanish Scholastics offers a much-needed survey of the entire field of early modern Spanish scholastic thought. In his recent book Linguistic Justice for Europe and for the World, Philippe Van Parijs argues in favor of the dissemination of English as the lingua franca. This, however, might entail certain forms of injustice. In the first part of this contribution, the three forms of injustice that Van Parijs discusses are presented along with his three respective solutions to these problems. At the same time, some criticisms on each of these forms are mentioned which have come forth in recent (...) literature. The second part of this paper examines the claim underlying Van Parijs’s book, viz. that it is a good thing to promote English as a common language. According to Van Parijs, this is necessary for developing an egalitarian conception of global justice as well as implementing such a conception. This article scrutinizes both of these arguments which are only briefly touched on in the book. I argue that a lingua franca is not a necessary condition for developing and implementing such an egalitarian conception. I defend this position through a close study of Van Parijs’s conception of deliberative democracy, which is a very demanding one. I show that even in a system of deliberative democracy, a common language is not a necessary condition for developing an egalitarian conception of justice. With reference to the theory of constitutional patriotism, I then argue that common values, rather than a common language, are more important for developing and implementing such a conception. 1516 saw the publication of three important works. First of all, it is the year of Thomas More’s Utopia. But it is also the year in which Erasmus published his major political work The Education of the Christian Prince. The third work even appeared with the same publisher as More’s Utopia, viz. Nicolaas Everaerts’s Topica or legal commonplaces. All three works are remarkable in their own way. Erasmus represents a tradition that goes back to Petrarch and that saw the well-being (...) of society as totally dependent on the virtuousness of its prince. For Thomas More this was far too risky and therefore he sketched a radical alternative that was based on a reorganisation of society as a whole. However appealing his imaginary island was, it is remarkable that within the domain of political theory it did not attract too much attention. Most authors focused on another work, that was conceived in the very same period, viz. Machiavelli’s Prince. The present article will shed light on these developments by focusing on the work of two further early-modern intellectuals active in the Netherlands. Both Justus Lipsius and Leonardus Lessius, whose work bears a strong resemblance to that of Everaerts, looked for the ideal society. And this was not a society after the model of More, but a society modelled after a well-defined form of Machiavellism. (shrink)

This is a remarkable book on an important theme, namely, knowing ourselves, which the author elaborates in three meditations. The first is devoted to the virtues and vices of the tongue, that is, the relationship between truth and deceit. It is in this chapter that irony, the central concept of the book, is most fully elaborated. The second has war as its central theme and deals first and foremost with the possibility of civilizing war. Is there any sanity in war? (...) In Denmark, teaching the famous fairy tales of Hans Christian Andersen poses a challenge in primary education because cultural heritage status and oversimplified readings make it difficult to engage students in authentic readings. A strategy could be to use philosophical dialogues from the tradition of philosophy with children because this is a student-centred approach to teaching where students explore questions and ideas together, and where the teacher assumes the role not as authority, but as facilitator of the dialogue. This kind (...) of dialogic teaching has been encouraged as especially suitable for literary education where teachers aim to engage students in reading the literature with an open mind. However, this article presents a case study that gives reason for caution. It analyses materials for philosophical dialogues on Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales and concludes that despite the dialogic ideals, the teaching design caves in to the weight of the cultural and historical impact of Hans Christian Andersen and his work. Pensando a figura “folclórica” do Saci, a proposta deste texto visou dar forma a tantas ideias soltas, hipóteses formuladas ao longo de anos de suposições sobre a dinâmica de nossa identidade, brasileira, filtrada pelo saber popular, expressa pela indústria cultural. Também buscou-se explicar as transformações do personagem, visto como produto manipulado assumido pelo exercício de transposição de tradições transmitidas oralmente, mas que foram apropriadas como oficiais por meio de longo processo de filtragem de narrativas escritas e ilustradas, e assim, transformadas (...) em mercadorias hoje incorporadas no contexto nacional. Pesou ainda a consideração do sutil constructo da memória coletiva como atributo integrante da requalificação do novo perfil brasileiro, na era da globalização, colocando temas amplos acima de questões de: gênero, classe, credo e principalmente de condição social. O objetivo principal deste trabalho é pensar a política imperial proposta por Sêneca tendo como horizonte a relação de complementariedade estabelecida por dois textos do autor, à saber, o Tratado sobre a Clemência e o De Ira. Nestes textos, como pretendemos demonstrar, há a clara preocupação em assegurar princípios éticos capazes de justificar as condutas virtuosas, tanto daquele que pretende atingir a boa vida, quanto daquele que pretende se estabelecer enquanto um governante justo. Nos dois textos, como veremos, há uma (...) sucessão de exemplos de ordem política que são exaltados numa clara tentativa de aconselhar moralmente o governante, seja pensando em Cláudio, com o De Ira, ou Nero, no caso do De Clementia. Esse artigo, de natureza filosófica, tem como objeto de estudo a crítica do modelo de pensamento representacional e dogmático efetivada pelo filósofo Gilles Deleuze. A pesquisa bibliográfica tem como horizonte teórico a filosofia da diferença, com foco no legado deleuziano. O autor apresenta pressupostos que constituem o pensamento representacional na forma de postulados. São oito postulados, a saber: o da Cogitatio Universalis, o ideal do senso comum, o modelo da recognição, o elemento da representação, o negativo do erro, o privilégio (...) da designação, a modalidade das soluções e o resultado do saber. Cabe aqui apontar contornos desses postulados que evidenciam a imagem dogmática do pensamento - imagem traidora do que significa pensar. Essa imagem modelar possui fortes ressonâncias no universo educacional contemporâneo. Trata-se, portanto, de efetivar, em sintonia com Deleuze, uma crítica às imagens dogmáticas do pensamento e de seus limites que frequentemente despotencializam o pensar, o pensar a educação e, por extensão, a própria vida. Considera, então, três fases histórico-filosóficas: o professor segundo o discurso pedagógico humanista; o professor segundo o discurso pedagógico da era "sociedade do trabalho" e o professor segundo o discurso pedagógico "tecnicista". Palavras-chave: professor; filosofia; história; infância; pedagogia. Abstract: This paper deals with the idea of "good teacher" in the context of modernity and contemporary age. A aprovação pela Assembleia da República de uma lei sobre declarações antecipadas de vontade justifica que se comentem os textos que lhe serviram de base, apresentados pelo Partido Socialista, Partido Social-Democrata, Partido CDS-PP e Bloco de Esquerda, na perspetiva da sua formulaçāo jurídica e de algumas dificuldades éticas encontradas na sua aplicabilidade médica. Da análise das propostas deduzem-se os requisitos jurídicos, éticos e de assistência na doença necessários para que se escreva um bom "testamento vital" que não levante dificuldades insuperáveis (...) quando o médico tiver de ter em conta estas declarações antecipadas de vontade face a um doente inconsciente que não pode manifestar a sua vontade actual. Analisa-se o conceito de autonomia diacrónica, como uma autonomia que se exerce hoje para ser eficaz amanhã e critica-se esta opçao legislativa, Por fim sugere-se que a melhor soluçao para a insegurança da pessoa, face á qualidade dos cuidados que lhe serão prestados na fase final da sua vida, não é o testamento vital mas a designação de um Procurador de saúde. The approval by the Portuguese National Parliament of a law concerning the anticipated declaration of will deserves a commentary on the texts upon which the Socialist, Social-Democrat, Centrist, and Leftist parties based their respective juridical formulations. The commentary will include a consideration of the ethical difficulties found in their eventual medical application. From an analysis of the proposals, one can deduce the juridical, ethical, and care requirements necessary to write a living will that does not raise insuperable difficulties when the physician has to consider these anticipated declarations of will in regard to a patient who is unconscious and unable to express his will as he currently understands it. The concept of diachronic autonomy, i.e., an autonomy that is exercised today such that it might be efficacious tomorrow, receives a critical analysis. Finally, the author suggests that the best solution for a person's insecurity in the face of the quality of care that will be administered to him in the final phase of his life is not a living will but the designation of an attorney-in-fact who will look after his health issues. A narrativa do samaritano compassivo (Lc 10,30-35) se encaixa na discussão sobre as características do verdadeiro seguidor, central no capítulo 10 do Evangelho. Nessa história, a atitude do discípulo está indissociavelmente ligada à compaixão, que ocupa um papel fundamental na estrutura do relato. O presente artigo oferece um avanço na compreensão do uso verbo σπλαγχνίζομαι (“ser movido de compaixão”) em Lc 10,25-37 a partir de uma análise narrativa da perícope, focalizando o papel do verbo no enredo e sua interpretação (...) à luz de seu contexto literário. Após a análise dos elementos estilísticos e narrativos do relato, apresentamos a importância de “ser movido de compaixão” na história do samaritano compassivo (Lc 10,25-37), na delimitação ampla da perícope do diálogo de Jesus com o legista (10,25-37), no enredo amplo do caminho para Jerusalém, iniciado em Lc 9,51, e no Evangelho de Lucas. O verbo “ser movido de compaixão” é particularmente escolhido para compor a caminhada para Jerusalém, vinculando os missionários, o legista e o samaritano e ilustrando a marca dos pequeninos que herdam o céu: a compaixão. O presente artigo pretende apresentar como e por que o compromisso com a objetividade é uma das características do bom aluno da Ética Nicomaqueia de Aristóteles. Buscar-se-á, com isso, oferecer uma justificativa para a exigência aristotélica de bons hábitos como condição prévia para seguir as lições éticas. Como será visto, tais hábitos são, pelo menos parcialmente, responsáveis pelo engendramento do compromisso com a objetividade. O engajamento na atividade virtuosa fornece ao aluno a experiência naquilo que é realmente bom e, assim, (...) fornece a perspectiva apropriada a partir da qual ele será capaz de julgar corretamente acerca de argumentos concernentes à boa vida para os seres humanos. La propuesta antropológica del médico español Pedro Laín Entralgo, se direcciona a la ejecución de un proyecto académico y autobiográfico, desde el cual se vivencien relaciones interpersonales genuinas, en las que siendo el otro desconocido, sin nombre, sea ayudado en su menesterosidad. Laín está convencido de que la razón suficiente para ser solidario con el otro es su condición de persona y, por serlo, debo creerle y serle prójimo. Dicho proyecto es denominado por Laín “pleisología de la vida cotidiana”; tal (...) propuesta resulta necesaria y debe ser acogida por el cristianismo en nuestros días. Se hace perentorio, hacer del cristianismo una propuesta con sentido, para ello, quien se quiera cristiano, que asuma su modo de serlo como vocación y la formule como un proyecto personal (sea persona), responsable y desde allí contribuya a la humanización de las relaciones humanas mediante la práctica de un amor samaritano.
