I assess the debate over the Suicide Machine Argument. There are several lessons to be learned from this debate. First, there is a fruitful distinction to be made,between tensed and tenseless versions of presentism, despite the temptation to suppose that presentism is a tensed theory of time. Second, once we’ve made the distinction between different kinds of presentism, it is clear that Licon’s objection protects the tenseless version of presentism from the Suicide Machine Argument; however, the argument is still effective (...) against the tensed version. Finally, I argue that if the presentist wants to remain a card carrying presentist, in the face of the challenge posed by Hales, then she must abandon her commitment to tense. (shrink)

Con la promulgación de la Ley 30 de 1986, se incluyó el concepto del consumo de la dosis personal de drogas. La Corte Constitucional, mediante sentencia C-221 de 1994, resolvió la demanda de constitucionalidad presentada por el ciudadano Alexandre Sochandamandou, ratificando el concepto de “dosis personal de consumo de drogas”, y despenalizando el mismo. En este artículo se plantea el desconocimiento de la legislación y la jurisprudencia acerca de la opinión técnico-científica en cuanto a esta temática, que originó diversas inconveniencias, (...) inconsistencias, vacíos e imprecisiones técnico-científicas que riñen con normas y tratados internacionales de ética médica, al igual que con evidencia médica encontrada sobre los efectos adversos ocasionados por las drogas en la salud de los consumidores de estas sustancias. A proposta do presente trabalho é analisar desde uma perspectiva antropológica a decisão vocacional entre seminaristas catarinenses. O trabalho de campo através da “objetivação participante” foi desenvolvido no Seminário Filosófico de Santa Catarina, e ampliado para ex-seminaristas, estagiários e padres. Analisando discursos e práticas foi possível perceber como que o despertar da vocação e as decisões implicadas na caminhada vocacional estão relacionados às condições históricas, econômicas e sociais. O primeiro capítulo resgata a história da implantação das dioceses e seminários no (...) Brasil, especificamente em Santa Catarina, possibilitando perceber como que a estrutura da Igreja Católica, em diálogo com as estruturas sociais, condiciona determinados tipos de recrutamento e de representações sobre a vocação sacerdotal. Considerando a multiplicação no número de padres nas últimas três décadas, buscou-se compreender algumas estratégias da Igreja para manter e reproduzir o corpo clerical, principalmente em relação ao papel da família, dos padres e dos coroinhas no processo do despertar e do recrutamento para o seminário. O segundo capítulo explora como aspectos econômicos estão presentes durante o processo de formação dos seminaristas destacando a importância da família, paróquias, comunidades e madrinhas para manter financeiramente o candidato ao sacerdócio. A análise indica como que estes jovens se envolvem num sistema de trocas para manutenção financeira, aonde a dialética de “dar, receber e retribuir” é fundamental para a decisão na caminhada vocacional. Por fim, o terceiro capítulo expõe como a experiência religiosa do sujeito subjaz às representações da vocação e possibilitam compreender a relação entre estruturas postas e a capacidade inventiva dos sujeitos envolvidos no processo de inculcação da vocação. Con el repunte de la literatura nacional durante la República Restaurada, Justo Sierra adoptó la pauta romántica y liberal que propugnaba Altamirano en órganos de difusión como El Renacimiento. Luego, con la llegada de Porfirio Díaz al poder, la literatura de Sierra se orientó al positivismo. En este artículo se estudia cómo se produjo el cambio del Sierra "romántico" al Sierra "positivista".

La reciente recuperación del concepto de don ha puesto de manifiesto la importancia del aspecto cultural en la vida de los hombres, lo que está contribuyendo a la configuración de un enfoque económico sustentado en una antropología más robusta y realista, que no gira en torno al individuo sino a la sociabilidad humana, sustentada en la familia. La transformación de la naturaleza que tiene lugar en las culturas no sería posible sin la capacidad del hombre de descubrir las posibilidades que (...) están ocultas dentro de ella, y que hace patente con la aportación de su trabajo, mediante el cual pone en acto lo más valioso de su acto de ser: su libertad, su capacidad de conocer y amar. Desde una antropología de la economía, este trabajo pretende aportar a la reflexión sobre los fundamentos y el sentido de la actividad económica. (shrink)

In environmental ethics, the legal and political representation of non-humans is a widespread aspiration. Its supporters see representative institutions that give voice to non-humans' interests as a promising strategy for responding to the illegitimate worldwide exploitation of non-human beings. In this article I engage critically with those who support this form of representation, and address two issues central to any account concerned with the legal and political representation of non-human living beings: what should be represented? And what are the conditions (...) of such a representation? The answers I provide to these queries count as a first step towards a comprehensive account of the institutional representation of non-human nature. (shrink)

This study contributes to the emerging literature on the negative effects over consumption that social media users may develop as a consequence of being engaged on social media platforms. The authors tested materialism’s direct and indirect impacts on compulsive, conspicuous, and impulsive buying, adding two novel mediators: attitudes toward social media content and social media intensity. The study uses a convenience sample of 400 Thai social media users analyzed using structural equation modeling. The results confirmed the well-established positive relationships between (...) materialism and each of the three-negative consumption behaviors also in the social media domain. A novel finding showed the important role played by SMI which was found to be a strong predictor of each of the three negative consumption behaviors and it was also found to significantly mediate the relationship between materialism and the three-negative consumption behaviors. An additional contribution of the study was found on the role of attitudes which, contrary to what is commonly believed, were often not significant in predicting any negative behavior. (shrink)

La presente ricerca vuole introdursi all'opera di Tommaso d'Aquino non tanto evocando gli spettri di polemiche solo posteriori sul soprannaturale, quanto invece gettando uno sguardo al tempo in cui e vissuto, il XIII secolo, ed ad un luogo caratteristico nel quale egli ha studiato e insegnato: l'universita di Parigi. Ne viene fuori una figura in (...) profonda osmosi con le tensioni spirituali della sua epoca e preoccupato di esprimere la perennita della fede. What ethical framework should be used as a basis for teaching business ethics? Should business ethics be taught by ethicists in a separate course, by business faculty in business courses, or perhaps by both? These are some of the issues this paper will address. The paper begins with a review of the literature concerning approaches to teaching business ethics. Next, some ethical frameworks for teaching business ethics are considered. Finally, the paper proposes that students should apply their own personal values (...) to business ethical issues in the classroom, thus providing future business leaders with a process for resolving ethical dilemmas. In a recent paper, Berger and Nanay consider, and reject, three ways of addressing the phenomenon of unconscious perception within a naïve realist framework. Since these three approaches seem to exhaust the options open to naïve realists, and since there is said to be excellent evidence that perception of the same fundamental kind can occur, both consciously and unconsciously, this is seen to present a problem for the view. We take this opportunity to show that all three approaches considered remain (...) perfectly plausible ways of addressing unconscious perception within a naïve realist framework. So far from undermining the credibility of naïve realism, Berger and Nanay simply draw our attention to an important question to be considered by naïve realists in future work. Namely, which of the approaches considered is most likely to provide an accurate account of unconscious perception in each of its purported incarnations? (shrink)

El fin de este trabajo es examinar unas cuantas doctrinas en la historia de la ética antigua que podrían considerarse válidas hoy. La motivación moral para los estoicos y para Sócrates se basa en el auto-interés, con la presuposición ulterior de que las virtudes morales son los verdaderos bienes. Pero las estrategias de justificación estoica y socrática son diferentes. Luego se llama la atención sobre el tipo protagónico de relativismo que subyace a las pretensiones liberales contemporáneas. El artículo termina sugiriendo (...) que sólo una teoría de los bienes objetivos humanos puede resolver el problema de la motivación moral y de la indeterminación del principio del daño en el liberalismo moderno. Freedom and law in Hannah Arendt’s thought are not spontaneously compatible and one might think they are almost impossible to occur together. Due to the importance of both freedom and law this might be considered Arendt’s greatest puzzle. Many scholars have addressed this problem but few have paid attention to the answers to this difficulty she found in political events and to the eventual solution to this puzzle, the phenomenon of civil disobedi-ence. This paper aims to address this gap.

Augustine narrates in Confessions, VII, ix, 13-15 his encounter with the Platonist books, which permitted him to grasp the immateriality of God and surprisingly the Christian Trinity too, a thesis that seems confirmed in the psychological arguments he puts forward in The Trinity, among other texts. However, a more fine-grained analysis shows that Augustine sets strict limits to the pagan, non-revealed knowledge of God, meaning that he doesn´t think the Neoplatonics professed the Trinity in the sense of the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed.

Bergson and the Contemporary Philosophy of Mind. A Comparison to the Enactivism In the last two decades, the research approach in Philosophy of Mind has changed considerably. The studies about mental phenomenon inspired by the so called “Internalist” model were focused on the relationship between mental state and neural movements and assumed that the mind has mental representations analogous to computer data structures, and computational procedures similar to computational algorithms. The new “Externalist” model, instead, is focused on relationship between mental (...) state and the rest of the world and assumes that the contents of mental states are dependent at least in part on the interaction between the subject and external world or environment. The aim of this paper is to compare this contemporary developments in Philosophy of Mind and the body-mind theory of Henri Bergson (1859-1941) in order to show how the work of the French philosopher has anticipated the main theoretical concepts of Externalism. Since the thirteenth century it is possible to talk about “secularization” of the mystic experience that led to a new stage in the history of the Christian mysticism. Meister Eckhart can be undoubtedly considered as an exceptional theologian who proclaims and justifies, theologically, the possibility of reintegrating the ontological identity with God without the necessity to leave the world. With his own life and instructions, he made possible that true contemplation was a Christian action. This Chistian action arises as a (...) contemplative style of life.A partir del siglo XIII se puede hablar de una «secularización» de la experiencia mística, y en esta nueva etapa que se inicia en la historia del misticismo cristiano, al Maestro Eckhart cabría definirlo con seguridad como el excepcional teólogo que proclama y justifica –teológicamente– la posibilidad de reintegrar la identidad ontológica con Dios sin necesidad de abandonar el mundo. La doctrina mística del Maestro Eckhart integra armónicamente la contemplación y la actividad en el mundo, posibilitando con su propia vida y sus instrucciones que la verdadera contemplación sea acción cristiana, y que la acción cristiana surja como estilo contemplativo de vida. Pero esta crítica –diversa y contradictoria– de los fragmentos heraclitanos y del Poema de Parménides, respectivamente, en vez de aclarar, ha servido para ocultar aún más sus genuinas reflexiones filosóficas, pues muchos de estos escritos se han utilizado ya sea para alabar a Heráclito o Parménides, ya sea para criticarlos y contraponerlos, o (...) bien para justificar intereses espurios. Esta Parte II de nuestro trabajo versa sobre las interpretaciones de la doctrina de la •8Zhg4" y de la *`>" en el filósofo de Elea, advirtiendo de nuevo que siempre se planteará el problema de la duda respecto a la autenticidad o falsedad, orden y estructura de sus fragmentos como fuente.As we said in the Parte I, the works of Heráclito and Parménides we find unknown in their integrity. However, few philosophers have been so commented as them.
