    Sustaining attention in affective contexts during adolescence: age-related differences and association with elevated symptoms of depression and anxiety.D. L. Dunning, J. Parker, K. Griffiths, M. Bennett, A. Archer-Boyd, A. Bevan, S. Ahmed, C. Griffin, L. Foulkes, J. Leung, A. Sakhardande, T. Manly, W. Kuyken, J. M. G. Williams, S. -J. Blakemore & T. Dalgleish - forthcoming - Cognition and Emotion.
Sustained attention, a key cognitive skill that improves during childhood and adolescence, tends to be worse in some emotional and behavioural disorders. Sustained attention is typically studied in non-affective task contexts; here, we used a novel task to index performance in affective versus neutral contexts across adolescence (N = 465; ages 11–18). We asked whether: (i) performance would be worse in negative versus neutral task contexts; (ii) performance would improve with age; (iii) affective interference would be greater in younger adolescents; (...)

The impossibility of corporate ethics: for a Levinasian approach to managerial ethics.David Bevan & Hervé Corvellec - 2007 - Business Ethics: A European Review 16 (3):208-219.
The moral philosophy of Levinas offers a stark prospectus of impossibility for corporate ethics. It differs from most traditional ethical theories in that, for Levinas, the ethical develops in a personal meeting of one with the Other, rather than residing in some internal deliberation of the moral subject. Levinasian ethics emphasises an infinite personal responsibility arising for each of us in the face of the Other and in the presence of the Third. It stresses the imperious demand we experience to (...)

    Deciding on Violence.Bevan Catley & Campbell Jones - 2002 - Philosophy of Management 2 (1):23-32.
If we were to believe the popular press, it would seem that violence at work is an increasingly pressing concern for employees, employers and legislative bodies. In this paper we offer a set of philosophical reflections on violence, in order to clarify and destabilise some of the assumptions which run through many discussions of, and practical interventions into, violence in the workplace. Rather than focusing on violence ‘as such’, we consider various ways in which actions have been, and could be, (...)

    Management, Political Philosophy, and Colonial Interference.Patricia H. Werhane & David Bevan - 2022 - Philosophy of Management 21 (3):301-313.
In this paper we set out to explore the claims that corporate social responsibility (CSR) itself is little more than a complementary extension of the project of coloniality initiated by the Enlightenment (e.g. Banerjee 2019). We will not dispute that claim. Rather we will develop three points. First, we will apply a non-linear, systems approach to demonstrate how we all, of any color, ethnic origin or historical location are all part of an interconnected interrelated sets of systems—what some thinkers call (...)

Clearing a path through the jungle: progress in Arabidopsis genomics.Michael Bevan, Ian Bancroft, Hans-Werner Mewes, Rob Martienssen & Richard McCombie - 1999 - Bioessays 21 (2):110-120.
Progress in sequencing the genome of the model plant Arabidopsis is reviewed. The resulting analysis of the sequence indicates an information-rich genome that is being tackled by a variety of high-throughput approaches aimed at understanding the functions of plant genes. The information derived from these systematic studies is providing important new knowledge of biological processes found uniquely in plants for comparison with that obtained in other multicellular organisms. Systems Thinking and Moral Imagination: Rethinking Business Ethics with Patricia Werhane.Patricia Werhane, Regina Wolfe & David Bevan (eds.) - 2018 - Cham: Springer Verlag.
This volume brings together a selection of papers written by Patricia Werhane during the most recent quarter century. The book critically explicates the direction and development of Werhane’s thinking based on her erudite and eclectic sampling of orthodox philosophical theories. It starts out with an introductory chapter setting Werhane’s work in the context of the development of Business Ethics theory and practice, along with an illustrative time line. Next, it discusses possible interpretations of the papers that have been divided across (...)

The Inexorable Sociality of Commerce: The Individual and Others in Adam Smith.David Bevan & Patricia Werhane - 2015 - Journal of Business Ethics 127 (2):327-335.
In this paper we reconsider Adam Smith’s ethics, what he means by self-interest and the role this plays in the famous “invisible hand.” Our efforts focus in part on the misreading of “the invisible hand” by certain economists with a view to legitimizing their neoclassical economic paradigm. Through exegesis and by reference to notions that are developed in Smith’s two major works, we deconstruct Smith’s ideas of conscience, justice, self-interest, and the invisible hand. We amplify Smith’s insistence, through his notions (...)

A 'parallel process'? Beginning a constructive conversation about a mäori methodology.Fiona Cram, Hazel Phillips, Bevan Tipene-Matua, Murray Parsons & Katrina Taupo - 2004 - Journal of Bioethical Inquiry 1 (1):14-19.
This paper documents the beginning of a conversation about what it means to be Mäori within a larger, mainstream research project. This larger project was conceived by a team of researchers that included a Mäori principal investigator, and funding was gained from a funding agency that has established criteria for Mäori responsiveness. The Mäori component of the project was, however, not initially conceived of as separate from the non-Mäori component. Discussions about this were initiated approximately one year into the project (...)

Scientific Explanation: A Study of the Function of Theory, Probability and Law in Science.Richard Bevan Braithwaite - 1953 - Cambridge,: Cambridge University Press.
The primary purpose of this book is to examine the logical features common to all the sciences. Each science proceeds by inventing general principles from which are deduced the consequences to be tested by observation and experiment; the author shows how the implications of this process explain some of its more baffling features and resolves many of the difficulties that philosophers have found in them. His exposition is by way of detailed examples.

    Critical social theory approach to disclosure of genomic incidental findings.J. L. Bevan, J. N. Senn-Reeves, B. R. Inventor, S. M. Greiner, K. M. Mayer, M. T. Rivard & R. J. Hamilton - 2012 - Nursing Ethics 19 (6):819-828.
Technology has expanded genomic research and the complexity of extracted gene-related information. Health-related genomic incidental findings pose new dilemmas for nurse researchers regarding the ethical application of disclosure to participants. Consequently, informed consent specific to incidental findings is recommended. Critical Social Theory is used as a guide in recognition of the changing meaning of informed consent and to serve as a framework to inform nursing of the ethical application of disclosure consent in genomic nursing research practices.

I am grateful to the Editors of for the opportunity to respond to the address given by Steve Williams at the Vincentian Conference of 2013, and published in the preceding pages. Mr. Williams takes the 2008 crisis of Western capitalism as his focus and offers at least two distinct narratives: in the first of these he outlines his experience of an extensive and complex professional, commercial world in. In a more extensive, second theme he offers some constructive suggestions as a (...)

The Question of Conscientiousness and Religious Engagement in Public Schools.Ryan Bevan - 2010 - Studies in Philosophy and Education 30 (3):257-269.
In this paper, I examine the question of how to nurture and develop conscientiousness thinkers and future citizens of diverse liberal-democratic societies from the perspective of virtue epistemology. More specifically, I examine this question in terms of how public schools might frame engagement with religious perspectives in the classroom. I begin by distinguishing between good and bad conscientiousness through an exploration of current work in the field of virtue epistemology. I then follow Kenneth Strike in his defense of the need (...)

Trust after the Global Financial Meltdown.Patricia Werhane, Laura Hartman, Crina Archer, David Bevan & Kim Clark - 2011 - Business and Society Review 116 (4):403-433.
Over the last decade, and culminating in the 2008 global financial meltdown, there has been an erosion of trust and a concomitant rise of distrust in domestic companies, multinational enterprises, and political economies. In response to this attrition, this article presents three arguments. First, we suggest that trust is the “glue” of any viable political economy, and we propose that the stakes of violating public trust are particularly high in light of the asymmetry between trust and distrust. Second, we identify a (...)

Building Partnerships to Create Social and Economic Value at the Base of the Global Development Pyramid.Jerry M. Calton, Patricia H. Werhane, Laura P. Hartman & David Bevan - 2013 - Journal of Business Ethics 117 (4):721-733.
This paper builds on London and Hart’s critique that Prahalad’s best-selling book prompted a unilateral effort to find a fortune at the bottom of the pyramid. Prahalad’s instrumental, firm-centered construction suggests, perhaps unintentionally, a buccaneering style of business enterprise devoted to capturing markets rather than enabling new socially entrepreneurial ventures for those otherwise trapped in conditions of extreme poverty. London and Hart reframe Prahalad’s insight into direct global business enterprise toward “creating a fortune with the base of the pyramid” rather (...)
