Genevieve Lloyd’s Spinoza is quite a different thinker from the arch rationalist caricature of some undergraduate philosophy courses devoted to “The Continental Rationalists”. Lloyd’s Spinoza does not see reason as a complete source of knowledge, nor is deductive rational thought productive of the highest grade of knowledge. Instead, that honour goes to a third kind of knowledge—intuitive knowledge (scientia intuitiva), which provides an immediate, non-discursive knowledge of its singular object. To the embarrassment of some hard-nosed philosophers, intellectual intuition has an (...) affective component; it is a form of love, and ultimately given that human beings are finite modes of God/Nature (Deus sive Natura), it is a form of the intellectual love of God (amor Dei intellectualis). Some philosophers do not know what to make of this mysterious aspect of Spinoza’s philosophy, which is nonetheless firmly anchored in a reading of Part V of the Ethics. Nonetheless, this note will insist with Lloyd’s “Reconsidering Spinoza’s Rationalism” that such doctrine is an integral part of Spinoza’s philosophy. Moreover, it will be shown that Spinoza is well aware of the limitations of reason (ratio) in gaining scientific knowledge of the world and requires intuition precisely because of the inability of reason to represent individuals in their full particularity. Imagination too has a role to play in shaping scientific knowledge, although reason performs a vital critical role in disciplining and liberating the human mind from inadequate imaginary ideas. 현대 대학들은 시장 경제의 원리에 따라 연구결과물의 양산과 취업률의 제고에만 온 정신을 집중하고 있다. 이러한 현상을 비판적 지성인들은 ‘폐허의 대학’ 또는 ‘대학의 기업화’라고 부르며 강력히 반발하고 있다. 그렇다면 대학의 몰락을 이겨내기 위한 새로운 대안과 방향성은 어떻게 발견될 수 있을까? 여러 학자는 대학의 오랜 역사, 특히 중세 대학의 설립과정에서 해답을 찾고자 한다. 그렇지만 일부 학자는 중세 대학에서는 아예 학문의 자유가 보장되지 않았다는 주장을 펼치기도 하다. 본 논문에서는 대학의 위기를 극복하기 위해 우선 중세 대학의 발생 배경과 유형들, 그리고 구조 등을 통해 발전 (...) 과정(1장)을 살펴보겠다. 이어서 중세 대학이 정치적 억압으로부터의 독립을 추구하는 과정과 교회 권력의 통제에 대해 저항하는 과정을 살펴봄으로써 외부권력‘으로부터의 자유’를 추구하는 과정을 탐구할 것이다.(제2장) 이를 토대로 과연 중세 대학이 지키려 했던 소중한 가치가 진리를 추구하려는 학문에 대한 사랑(amor scientiae)이며 이를 위해 ‘교수와 학생의 공동체’이 이루어졌음을 밝힐 것이다. 이러한 소중한 가치를 지키기 위해 중세의 대학은 동맹 휴학이나 철수를 포함한 참으로 다양한 방법을 동원했고, 필요에 따라서 교황과 왕이나 귀족을 자신의 보호자로 삼기도 했다. 아리스토텔레스의 강의 금지령이 성과를 거두지 못한 것에서 중세 대학의 자율성은 잘 드러난다.(제3장) 중세의 대학이 추구했던 가치를 통해서 위기를 겪고 있는 현대의 대학인들은 다양한 교훈을 얻을 수 있다. 다양하고 교묘한 형태로 나타나는 현대 대학에 대한 통제에 대처하기 위해서는 대학인들이 단지 눈앞에 작은 이익에만 매몰되는 일 없이, 자신이 추구하고 있는 학문적인 이상을 뚜렷이 자각해야 한다. 효율적인 기술자 양성에 적합한 방법을 모든 기초 학문에도 적용하려는 경향을 극복하기 위해서는 중세 대학의 인문학부에서 이루어진 통합적인 교육과정을 주목해야 한다. 상위학부를 위한 기초과정의 역할을 충실히 수행했던 ‘인문학부’처럼 변화하는 개별적인 상황에 능동적으로 대처할 수 있는 보편적인 교육을 지향해야 한다. 또한 중세 대학에서 추구했던 평등의 원리에 따라 대학의 주체인 구성원들이 모두 ‘함께 지배하기’(shared governance)에 참여함으로서 이미 심하게 손상된 대학의 공동체 정신을 회복해야 한다. 우리가 가르치는 학생들과 동료들을 진정한 가족으로 바라 볼 때, 우리의 대학들은 경쟁의 두려움에서 벗어나 ‘지혜의 집’이 주는 아늑함과 형제애를 느끼는 장소가 될 것이다. 중세 대학은 진리를 추구하려는 학문에 대한 사랑(amor scientiae) 이라는 소중한 가치를 지키기 위한 ‘교수와 학생의 공동체’였다. 이가치를 지키기 위해 다양한 방법을 동원했고, 필요에 따라서 교황과 왕이나 귀족을 자신의 보호자로 삼기도 했다. 이를 통해 발전했던 대학들은 중세 후기에 들어서면서 서서히 몰락해서 오랫동안심한 침체기를 겪었다. 중세 후기 대학이 이처럼 침체된 이유는 무엇인가? 이를 찾기 위해 본 논문에서는 우선 새로운 대학들이 유럽 전역에서 설립되었던 중세 후기에 일어난 대학 환경의 변화를살펴보았다.(1장) 이 시기에는 국가가 대학 설립을 주도했으며, 이를 통해 대학의 자율성이 크게 침해되었음을 (...) 확인했다. 중세 후기대학이 침체된 보다 구체적 이유로는 대학이 부여된 특권을 남용하고 평등의 원리를 배반했음을 밝혔다. 또한 보호자 역할을 하던교회가 통제자로 변함으로써 신학부의 역할은 축소되었다. 더욱이페스트를 비롯해서 사회에 위기가 닥쳤을 때, 이를 해결하기 위한전문성을 발휘하지 못하고 경직된 전통에만 매달렸던 대학은 다양한 비판에 직면했다. 더욱이 권력을 추구하던 대학은 오히려 학문의 자유를 빼앗기고 정치권력에 예속되고 말았다.(2장) 이렇게 몰락해 간 중세 후기 대학들을 바라보면서, 우리는 현대 대학의 위기를 극복하기 위한 교훈을 얻을 수 있다. 진정한 학문의 발전을 위해서는 대학이 지닌 자율성이 얼마나 소중한가를 자각해야 한다. 또한 대학의 교수와 학생은 자신이 보유한 지식이 단순히 이기심을 채우기 위해 사용해도 좋은 도구가 아니라 사회의 발전을 위한‘공공재’라는 책임감을 느껴야 한다. 특히 대학은 사회 전체를 위협하는 경향에 대한 비판적 성찰을 멈추어서는 안 된다.(3장) 미래에도 대학이 제 역할을 올바로 수행하기 위해서는 대학들이 극심한경쟁에 따른 폐쇄성을 극복해야 한다. 학문의 자유를 보장하기 위해서는 교수의 신분 보장이 이루어져야 할 뿐만 아니라 비전임 교수, 학생, 교직원들의 권리 침해도 중지되어야 한다. 또한 국가는 무분별한 대학 서열화를 지양하고 사회 발전에 필요한 학문들이 균형 있게 성장하고 재능 있는 대학생이 공부에 집중할 수 있도록 지원해야 한다. 중세 후기 대학의 몰락에 대한 성찰이 우리나라의대학 지원 정책을 근본적으로 되돌아보기 위한 계기를 마련해 주기를 기대한다. Laetitia in Spinoza has a twofold meaning: on the one hand is a passion, then is a product of inadecuates ideas and is associated with the first kind of knowledge (Imaginatio); on the other hand is expression of the Conatus and is an active affect (Fortitudo) connected with the third kind of knowledge (Scientia intuitiva). This second meaning confront us to a happines no human, frozen, abyssal which prefigure thinkers as Nietzsche, Bataille or lanchot.

Amor Masovic, responsable de la commission de recherche des disparus en Bosnie-Herzégovine et ancien responsable de la commission pour l’échange des prisonniers pendant la guerre de 1992-1995, nous présente ensuite un tableau accablant des disparitions dans les guerres récentes en ex-Yougoslavie, et des pratiques pour faire en sorte que ceux-ci ne soient ni retrouvés ni, encore moins, identifiés (d’où des fosses communes de deux types : « primaires » – où les corps furent enterrés initialement – et « secondaires (...) » – où ces mêmes corps furent ré-enterrés, souvent démembrés, après avoir été déterrés pour être dispersés et moins aisés à repérer). 28 000 des 40 000 disparus ex-Yougoslaves relèvent du conflit en Bosnie et sont à 95 % des civils protégés par les conventions de Genève. Sur les 280 charniers identifiés la plupart se trouvaient à l’arrière et non sur le front et les disparitions sont datables à des périodes de non-combat. Le but de la commission est donc d’abord de retrouver et identifier les morts pour « faire savoir » et permettre le deuil (puisque la barbarisation qui a été exercée est double : contre les victimes et contre leurs familles qui ne peuvent « vivre » tant qu’elles n’ont pas de certitude). En outre, faute de disposition légale et d’une absence de droit spécifique des disparus personne ne peut être incriminé pour une disparition devant le TPIY où les « disparus » ne sont donc pas représentés. Amor Masovic tire quatre conclusions de son exposé : 1) la barbarie exprimée aujourd’hui est pour partie un résultat des manques de la justice à l’égard des crimes de guerre de la seconde guerre mondiale ; 2) la guerre contre les civils augmente en même temps qu’augmentent les dispositions internationales contre ces exactions qui restent donc purement formelles ; 3) en Bosnie, la barbarisation s’est exercée sur les corps des victimes de façon redoublée puisque l’anéantissement des preuves du crime fait que la mort n’est pas une vraie fin. D’où une forme particulière de barbarisation d’après-guerre ; 4) seul élément plus « positif » : en Bosnie des échanges de prisonniers eurent lieu pendant la guerre sans attendre la fin du conflit ce qui est rarissime et va au-delà des exigences posées par les conventions de Genève en matière de libération des prisonniers. Building a meaningful model of biological regulatory network is usually done by specifying the components and their interactions, by guessing the values of parameters, by comparing the predicted behaviors to the observed ones, and by modifying in a trial-error process both architecture and parameters in order to reach an optimal fitness. We propose here a different approach to construct and analyze biological models avoiding the trial-error part, where structure and dynamics are represented as formal constraints. We apply the method to (...) Hopfield-like networks, a formalism often used in both neural and regulatory networks modeling. The aim is to characterize automatically the set of all models consistent with all the available knowledge. The available knowledge is formalized into formal constraints. The latter are compiled into Boolean formula in conjunctive normal form and then submitted to a Boolean satisfiability solver. This approach allows to formulate a wide range of queries, expressed in a high level language, and possibly integrating formalized intuitions. In order to explore its potential, we use it to find cycles for 3-nodes networks and to determine the flower morphogenesis regulatory network of Arabidopsis thaliana. Applications of this technique are numerous and concern the building of models from data as well as the design of biological networks possessing specified behaviors. (shrink)

En este artículo exponemos las intuiciones del teólogo y biólogo alemán Karl Schmitz-Moormann sobre la evolución. Como leitmotiv subyacente en toda su obra, Schmitz-Moormann tiene a Teilhard de Chardin. Inspirado por Teilhard y su metafísica de la unión, introduce un nuevo concepto, a saber, la uni-totalidad. Veremos aquí cómo Schmitz-Moormann observa diversas uni-totalidades a lo largo del progreso evolutivo, desde las partículas subatómicas hasta las agrupaciones humanas. Esas diversas uni-totalidades implican, a la vez, diversidad de unión, que puede ser explicada (...) por causas que van desde la interacción nuclear hasta el amor interpersonal. We use a lab experiment to examine whether and how leaders influence workers’ (un)ethical behavior through financial reporting choices. We randomly assign the role of leaders or workers to subjects, who can choose to report an outcome via automatic or self-reporting. Self-reporting allows for profitable and undetectable earnings manipulation. We vary the leaders’ ability to choose the reporting method and to punish workers. We show that workers are more likely to choose automatic reporting when their leader voluntarily does so and (...) can assign punishment. Even workers who choose self-reporting tend to cheat less when their leader chooses automatic reporting. Nonetheless, most leaders do not opt for automatic reporting in the first place: they often choose self-reporting and punish workers who rather choose automatic reporting. Collectively, our results reveal a dual effect of leadership on ethical behaviors in organizations: workers behave more ethically if their leader makes ethical choices, but often leaders do not make ethical choices in the first place. The inclusion of animals in research studies involves a great responsibility to ensure animal welfare within the relevant ethical and legal frameworks. This study aimed to review compliance with the ARRIVE Essential 10 requirements and the ethical oversight of animal behaviour and welfare studies in farm animals. Three journals and a total of 133 articles were reviewed for compliance with the ARRIVE Essential 10 items and criteria. Each article obtained a final score according to whether or not each criterion was (...) met within each item. Likewise, ethical declaration in each article was recorded. Chi-square test and linear models were built to assess associations between the ethical statement presentation and the final ARRIVE Essential 10 score with the country, the species, and the journal. We found that 15% of the articles did not present an ethical statement. The journal with the highest impact factor and the countries of the Global South presented an ethical statement more frequently. Regarding the Essential 10, the item with the lowest agreement score was ‘Blinding’ and the one with the highest agreement was ‘Outcome Measures’. Also, significant differences were found between journals in terms of the Essential 10 score. Essential 10 provides relevant information that allows reviewers and readers to identify possible welfare risks and the validity of the results in animal welfare science publications. (shrink)

The starting point for the following reflections comes from Jacques Roger’s monumental work, Les sciences de la vie dans la pensée française du XVIIIe siècle. I hope my remarks may cast some light on a problem that has long remained obscure, and doubtless was to Buffon himself: the status of matter in general and the relation of brute to organic matter in particular.

Humankind is currently witnessing, and shaping, the most significant and rapid paradigm shift in human history - a paradigm shift of major demographic, economic, ecological, and geo-political dimensions. For the first time in human history - we are faced not with just one crisis - but a confluence of several crises; crises that are not related to a single tribe or community - a single nation -or a single region of the world - but are each global in scale. To (...) meet the challenges of these global crises will require an equally historic paradigm shift; a paradigm shift with a strong environmental ethic that restores ecological balance and integrity to our failing ecosystems, and that addresses the critical issue of climate change; a paradigm shift toward an economic system that brings about an end to poverty — and a paradigm that brings an end to war as a means to solving conflict, as it is only through a global family in harmony and peace with itself, that we can solve the unprecedented global issues facing our one common home, planet earth - and our one common future as a global family. The travel and tourism industry has, and will continue to play a vital and leading role toward this paradigm shift, and as the world's largest industry involving virtually every nation in the world — will be the central pillar of a Peace through Commerce movement. The dramatic growth of tourism in the past 60 years is one of the most remarkable economic and social phenomena of our time. The industry has grown from a total of 25 million international arrivals in 1950 to a projected 1 billion international arrivals in 2010, and a further projection to 1.6 billion by 2020. Beginning with the emergence of "Ecotourism" in the late 1980' s, there are an increasing number of tourism market segments which fall within a broad category that can be called "Peace Tourism," and classified within a framework that includes peace within ourselves, peace with others, peace with nature, peace with past generations, peace with future generations, and peace with our Creator. Since its birth in 1986, the International Institute for Peace through Tourism (IIPT) has been promoting these values of tourism together with its vision of Travel and Tourism as the world's first "Global Peace Industry" - an industry that promotes and supports the belief that every traveler is potentially an "Ambassador for Peace." This "higher purpose of tourism" includes the key role of tourism in promoting international understanding and collaboration among nations; environmental protection and preservation of biodiversity; enhancing cultures and valuing heritage; contributing to sustainable development and poverty reduction; and healing wounds of conflict. Contrasting the conflicting positions of Fink and Žižek, this article opens and closes with the question: is feminine jouissance ineffable? It solves the mystery of why Lacan associates the Other jouissance with women and presents an account of phallic and the Other jouissance informed by the work of Breuer and Freud. It argues that the satisfactions of Lacan’s feminine subject bear striking affinity to those of the hysteric, while phallic jouissance affords the same sort of enjoyment as that of Freud’s (...) obsessional neurotic. And, while “real” experiences make one lose one-self and may not be represented by one who was absent, this is not to say that we cannot shed light on characteristically feminine pleasure/pains. ZUSAMMENFASSUNGDie renommierte Religionsphilosophin Eleonore Stump bezieht seit über zwei Jahrzehnten in zahlreichen Publikationen zur Theodizeeproblematik Stellung. In der vorliegenden Untersuchung werden Stumps Überlegungen zum problem of evil systematisiert und kritisch gewürdigt. Dabei zeigt sich, dass die zentrale Annahme, auf der Stumps Theodizee beruht, die Pädagogisierung des Leids im Rahmen einer free will defence, über die Jahre hinweg keine substantielle Modifikation erfahren hat.SUMMARYSince more than two decades well-known philosopher of religion Eleonore Stump has discussed in numerous publications the problem of evil. Ezzence is the first smartphone-controlled olfactometer designed for both day and night conditions. We discuss the design and technical implementation of Ezzence and report on a study to evaluate the feasibility of using the device in home-based sleep environments. The study results show that participants were satisfied with the device and found it easy to use. Furthermore, participants reported a significant improvement in sleep quality when using the device with scent in comparison to the control condition, as well as better (...) mood the following morning and shorter time to sleep onset. The device is integrated with a wearable EEG and real-time sleep staging algorithm to release scent during specific sleep stages, which is important for certain use cases. Ezzence can be used for several applications, including those that require scent triggered day and night. They include targeted memory reactivation, longitudinal health treatments, therapy, and mental or physical exercises. Finally, this article proposes an interaction framework to understand relationships between scents and environments based on proxemic dimensions and passive or active interactions during sleep. This article introduces some soft computing methods generally used for data analysis and flow pattern detection in fluid dynamics. These techniques decompose the original flow field as an expansion of modes, which can be either orthogonal in time, or in space or in time and space, or they can simply be selected using some sophisticated statistical techniques. The performance of these methods is tested in the turbulent wake of a wall-mounted square cylinder. This highly complex flow is suitable to show (...) the ability of the aforementioned methods to reduce the degrees of freedom of the original data by only retaining the large scales in the flow. The main result is a reduced-order model of the original flow case, based on a low number of modes. A deep discussion is carried out about how to choose the most computationally efficient method to obtain suitable reduced-order models of the flow. The techniques introduced in this article are data-driven methods that could be applied to model any type of non-linear dynamical system, including numerical and experimental databases. (shrink)

The problem of stability in population dynamics concerns many domains of application in demography, biology, mechanics and mathematics. The problem is highly generic and independent of the population considered (human, animals, molecules,…). We give in this paper some examples of population dynamics concerning nucleic acids interacting through direct nucleic binding with small or cyclic RNAs acting on mRNAs or tRNAs as translation factors or through protein complexes expressed by genes and linked to DNA as transcription factors. The networks made of (...) these interactions between nucleic acids (considered respectively as edges and nodes of their interaction graph) are complex, but exhibit simple emergent asymptotic behaviours, when time tends to infinity, called attractors. We show that the quantity called attractor entropy plays a crucial role in the study of the stability and robustness of such genetic networks. (shrink)

ZUSAMMENFASSUNGDie Auseinandersetzung mit der Praxis des Bittgebets stellt keine Randthematik bei der Reflexion des theistischen Glaubens dar, sondern ist von erheblicher systematischer und existentieller Bedeutung. Eine rege Debatte über die Sinnhaftigkeit des Bittgebets ist gegenwärtig in der angelsächsischen Religionsphilosophie in Gang. Die Untersuchung präsentiert und würdigt kritisch die aktuellen Entwürfe zum Bittgebet von Eleonore Stump und Keith Ward. Beide Autoren erachten die traditionelle Konzeption des Bittgebets bei Thomas von Aquin für unbefriedigend und entwickeln ihre eigenen Entwürfe in Absetzung vom Aquinaten. (...) Da weder Stump noch Ward eine detaillierte Analyse des Bittgebets bei Thomas vorlegen, wird dieses in einem ersten Schritt vorgestellt. In einem zweiten Schritt erfolgt die Auseinandersetzung mit den von Stump und Ward vorgebrachten Einwänden. Abschließend werden Stärken und Schwächen des thomanischen Entwurfs erhoben.SUMMARYWhat petitionary prayer is about is not a marginal topic for theism but bears considerable systematic and existential value. A lively debate about the meaningfulness of petitionary prayer is under way in contemporary angloamerican philosophy of religion. The paper presents and discusses the accounts of petitionary prayer put forward by Eleonore Stump and Keith Ward. Both scholars consider the traditional account of petitionary prayer proposed by Thomas Aquinas as unsatisfactory and develop their own outlines in opposition to Aquinas. Regrettably neither Stump nor Ward provide us with a detailed analysis of Aquinas's understanding of petitionary prayer. Therefore the paper first presents at length the account of Aquinas. Then the objections Stump and Ward put forward against Aquinas are examined. Finally, strengths and weaknesses of Aquinas's understanding of petitionary prayer are worked out. (shrink)
