Relying on data collected by the Zurich Survey of Academics, a unique representative online survey among academics in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, this paper replicates Johann and Mayer's :175–196, 2019) analysis of researchers' perceptions of scientific authorship and expands their scope. The primary goals of the study at hand are to learn more about country differences in perceptions of scientific authorship, as well as the influence of perceived publication pressure on authorship perceptions. The results indicate that academics in Switzerland interpret (...) scientific authorship more leniently than their colleagues in Germany and Austria. The findings further indicate that, as perceived pressure to publish increases, researchers are more likely to belong to a group of academics who hold the view that any type of contribution/task justifies co-authorship, including even those contributions/tasks that do not justify co-authorship according to most authorship guidelines. In summary, the present study suggests that action is required to harmonize regulations for scientific authorship and to improve the research culture. (shrink)

Let $R$ be a convergent term rewriting system, and let $CR$-equality on combinatory logic terms be the equality induced by $\beta \eta R$-equality on terms of the lambda calculus under any of the standard translations between these two frameworks for higher-order reasoning. We generalize the classical notion of strong reduction to a reduction relation which generates $CR$-equality and whose irreducibles are exactly the translates of long $\beta R$-normal forms. The classical notion of strong normal form in combinatory logic is also (...) generalized, yielding yet another description of these translates. Their resulting tripartite characterization extends to the combined first-order algebraic and higher-order setting the classical combinatory logic descriptions of the translates of long $\beta$-normal forms in the lambda calculus. As a consequence, the translates of long $\beta R$-normal forms are easily seen to serve as canonical representatives for $CR$-equivalence classes of combinatory logic terms for non-empty, as well as for empty, $R$. Este artigo apresenta a pesquisa como princípio formativo e destaca a sua relevância para a dimensão do conhecimento e da aprendizagem, trazendo evidências que ela é o modo humano de conhecer e compreender. Objetiva-se chamar a atenção para diferentes dimensões formativas da pesquisa e que, em certo sentido, podem ser situadas como pressupostas ou anteriores a quaisquer modalidades, métodos, tipos ou estratégias de sua realização específica. Nessa direção, a pesquisa pode ser compreendida, em termos gerais, como constituidora do modo de (...) ser humano e, em termos específicos, do modo de ser estudantil e, também, docente. Para tanto, argumenta-se que a linguagem é um traço distintivo dos humanos que lhes permite simbolizar, interpretar, compreender e transformar; tais aspectos permitem dizer que a constituição do mundo humano é uma autocriação. Por fim, destaca-se a pesquisa como esforço em compreender as situações práticas mediante o recurso a categorias teóricas e/ou interpretativas e como uma atividade humana de fundamental importância e que tem nas instituições educativas um lugar privilegiado para a sua otimização, na medida em que inter-relaciona o ensino, a pesquisa e a experiência prática da vida. Past research found performance differences between monolingual and bilingual children in the domain of executive functions. Furthermore, recent studies have reported advantages in processing efficiency or mental effort in bilingual adults and children. These studies mostly focused on the investigation of “cold” EF tasks. Studies including measures of “hot” EF, i.e., tasks operating in an emotionally significant setting, are limited and hence results are inconclusive. In the present study, we extend previous research by investigating performance in a task of the (...) “hot” EF domain by both behavioral data and mental effort via pupillary changes during task performance. Seventy-three monolingual and bilingual school children solved the Iowa Gambling Task in two different conditions. In the standard task, characterized by constant gains and occasional losses, children did not learn to improve their decision-making behavior. In a reversed task version, characterized by constant losses and occasional gains, both monolinguals and bilinguals learned to improve their decision-making behavior over the course of the task. In both versions of the task, children switched choices more often after losses than after gains. Bilinguals switched their choices less often than monolinguals in the reversed task, indicating a slightly more mature decision-making strategy. Mental effort did not differ between monolinguals and bilinguals. Conclusions of these findings for the bilingual advantage assumption will be discussed. (shrink)

"Nach Auschwitz Gedichte zu schreiben, ist barbarisch": Das Diktum Adornos gehort zu den bekanntesten Satzen Adornos und erfuhr eine intensive Beachtung im literarischen Feld, im Feuilleton und in der Forschung. ENtlang des Diktums wurde vor allem die Frage nach dem Versagen von Geist und Kultur angesichts von Auschwitz diskutiert: Wie war es moglich, dass ein Land wie Deutschland, das fur seine Kunst und Kultur geschatzt wurde, ganz Europa in ein Schlachthaus verwandelte? Und wie war es moglich, dass eben jene Kunst (...) und Kultur dies nicht verhindern konnte? Diese Frage, die konstitutiv fur das Selbstverstandnis der Gesellschaft der Bonner Republik gewesen ist, wurde vornehmlich entlang des Diktums Adornos verhandelt. UNd auch im 21. JAhrhundert scheint das Diktum Adornos noch in der Lage zu sein, diesbezugliche Fragen zu koordinieren. In der vorliegenden Studie geht es um die Rekonstruktion dieser Debatte, welche eine der wichtigsten Debatten der Vergangenheitsbewaltigung ist. DAbei werden nicht nur die unterschiedlichen Bezugnahmen im literarischen Feld herangezogen, sondern es wird gezeigt, dass die AuSSerungen Adornos als eine zeitdiagnostische Zustandsbeschreibung innerhalb des Barbarei-Diskurses der Moderne das Ende einer Debatte markierten, die mit Friedrich Schiller begann. Now this is disastrous, not only because the richest and most profound aspect of being is lost, but also because such an approach cannot avoid falsifying our understanding of the real. For only in the concrete experience of self--not a knowledge of a certain object that might be so designated, but as the absolutely incom- municable presence of the I --can the significance of being as an absolute and unconditioned value, which at the same time founds a radical plurality whose (...) unique terms resist absorption into a common denominator, be properly grasped. The idea of being envelopes the value of what is most intimate in the subject; the I who thinks being, and the act by which I think it, and my liberty which takes its stand in its presence, and whatever is most interior and most singular in my personal attitude--all this is being, and in being. And instead of relegating the subject to the investigations of some other branch of study, the self, we must insist, occupies a privileged place in metaphysics. It is the manifestation par excellence in which being presents itself to us as an absolute value and first reveals what it means really to exist. (shrink)
