A constructive definition of the continuum based on formal topology is given and its basic properties studied. A natural notion of Cauchy sequence is introduced and Cauchy completeness is proved. Other results include elementary proofs of the Baire and Cantor theorems. From a classical standpoint, formal reals are seen to be equivalent to the usual reals. Lastly, the relation of real numbers as a formal space to other approaches to constructive real numbers is determined.

En este artículo se estudia el capítulo sobre Ibn Ḥayyān en la Ḏajīra de Ibn Bassām desde dos perspectivas diferentes. Por un lado, se afirma que éste es el más importante —aunque infravalorado— testimonio sobre la biografía intelectual de Ibn Ḥayyān y su método historiográfico, así como las razones ideológicas que le llevaron a continuar su historia de la dominación marwāní en al-Andalus. Este artículo trata del comentario que Ibn al-Sid al-Batalyawasi hizo de ese texto de Ibn Qutayba, e intenta mostrar la forma pecualiar en que Ibn al-Sid desarrolla su propia crítica a la polémica tesis de Ibn Qutayba sobre la relación entre ortodoxia, falsafa y kalam. Is there a limit to the legitimate demands of morality? In particular, is there a limit to people's responsibility to promote the well-being of others, either directly or via social institutions? Utilitarianism admits no such limit, and is for that reason often said to be an unacceptably demanding moral and political view. In this original new study, Murphy argues that the charge of excessive demands amounts to little more than an affirmation of the status quo. The real problem with utilitarianism (...) is that it makes unfair demands on people who comply with it in our world of nonideal compliance. Murphy shows that this unfairness does not arise on a collective understanding of our responsibility for others' well being. Thus, according to Murphy, while there is no general problem to be raised about the extent of moral demands, there is a pressing need to acknowledge the collective nature of the demands of beneficence. Diese prinzipielle Positionalität ist gegenüber diskurs- und verfahrensethischen Ansätzen ebenso festzuhalten wie gegenüber utilitaristischen Nivellierungen grundlagentheoretischer Fragen.
