Whose cosmopolitanism?: critical perspectives, relationalities and discontents.Nina Glick Schiller & Andrew Irving (eds.) - 2015 - New York: Berghahn Books.
The term cosmopolitan is increasingly used within different social, cultural and political settings, including academia, popular media and national politics. However those who invoke the cosmopolitan project rarely ask whose experience, understanding, or vision of cosmopolitanism is being described and for whose purposes? In response, this volume assembles contributors from different disciplines and theoretical backgrounds to examine cosmopolitanism's possibilities, aspirations and applications--as well as its tensions, contradictions, and discontents--so as to offer a critical commentary on the vital but often neglected (...)

Social Class and Medical Decisionmaking: A Neglected Topic in Bioethics.Betty Wolder Levin & Nina Glick Schiller - 1998 - Cambridge Quarterly of Healthcare Ethics 7 (1):41-56.
As part of an effort to look at for bioethicists interested in clinical decisionmaking, Erik Parens, the editor of this special section, asked us to look at social class. When we began our research for this paper, we were surprised to find that although bioethicists have written much on social class and such macrolevel issues as access to healthcare and the distribution of scarce resources, and have paid some attention to the effects of class on patient-provider relationships, bioethicists have written (...)

Ritual: Kritische Theorie und psychoanalytische Praxis.Oliver Decker, Christoph Türcke & Thomas Dietzel (eds.) - 2019 - Giessen: Psychosozial-Verlag.

  8. Metaphysical indeterminacy in Everettian quantum mechanics.David Glick & Baptiste Le Bihan - 2024 - European Journal for Philosophy of Science 14 (3):1-22.
The question of whether Everettian quantum mechanics (EQM) justifies the existence of metaphysical indeterminacy has recently come to the fore. Metaphysical indeterminacy has been argued to emerge from three sources: coherent superpositions, the indefinite number of branches in the quantum multiverse and the nature of these branches. This paper reviews the evidence and concludes that those arguments don’t rely on EQM alone and rest on metaphysical auxiliary assumptions that transcend the physics of EQM. We show how EQM can be ontologically (...)

Reinventing Paulo Freire’s pedagogy in Finnish non-formal education: The case of Life Skills for All model.Juha Suoranta, Nina Hjelt, Tuukka Tomperi & Anna Grant - 2022 - Educational Philosophy and Theory 54 (13):2228-2242.
The article contributes to the academic discussion on Paulo Freire’s pedagogical thinking as a basis for reinventing contemporary non-formal education. In Finland, Freire’s transformational/liberatory theory of adult learning was applied as a framework for developing an adult educational model called Life Skills for All. The pilot project’s case studies were carried out with different groups of people during the model’s development phase. We describe these cases and discuss what can be learned from them for offering basic and life skills education (...)

How Far does Science Need Determinism?F.

From Brain Imaging Religious Experience to Explaining Religion: A Critique.Marc Slors & Nina Azari - 2007 - Archive for the Psychology of Religion 29 (1):67-86.
Recent functional neuroimaging data, acquired in studies of religious experience, have been used to explain and justify religion and its origins. In this paper, we critique the move from describing brain activity associated with self-reported religious states, to explaining why there is religion at all. Toward that end, first we review recent neuroimaging findings on religious experience, and show how those results do not necessarily support a popular notion that religion has a primitive evolutionary origin. Importantly, we call into question (...)

    Markovian and Non-Markovian Quantum Measurements.Jennifer R. Glick & Christoph Adami - 2020 - Foundations of Physics 50 (9):1008-1055.
Consecutive measurements performed on the same quantum system can reveal fundamental insights into quantum theory’s causal structure, and probe different aspects of the quantum measurement problem. According to the Copenhagen interpretation, measurements affect the quantum system in such a way that the quantum superposition collapses after each measurement, erasing any memory of the prior state. We show here that counter to this view, un-amplified measurements have coherent ancilla density matrices that encode the memory of the entire set of quantum measurements (...)
