The challenges posed by chronic illness have pointed out to epidemiologists the multifactorial complex nature of disease causality. This notion has been referred to as a web of causality. This web extends theoretically beyond risk markers. It includes determinants of emergence/non-emergence of disease. This web of determinants is a form of complex system. Due to its complexity, the determinants within such system are not linked to each others in a linear, predictable manner only. Predictability is possible only on a short-term (...) basis, and unpredictability sets in over the long run. Understanding such a system of determinants calls for articulation and testing of complex models which synthesize our knowledge of multiple determinants at many scales, both biological and otherwise. Given the complexity of this web and existing knowledge about the nonlinearity of such systems, the following question is posed: Can the challenge of studying causality be adequately addressed if emphasis continues to be placed on using tools and methods that are geared towards looking at such system from a linear paradigm? Or is it time to add to the epidemiologic research agenda the notion of nonlinearity and its relevant form of analytical approaches that are being tested in other disciplines? Furthermore, the question posed here applies as well to the study of determinants of health. Addressing determinants of heath adds further complexity to our task. (shrink)

ABSTRACTWhat is the relation between ethical reflection and moral behavior? Does professional reflection on ethical issues positively impact moral behaviors? To address these questions, Schwitzgebel and Rust empirically investigated if philosophy professors engaged with ethics on a professional basis behave any morally better or, at least, more consistently with their expressed values than do non-ethicist professors. Findings from their original US-based sample indicated that neither is the case, suggesting that there is no positive influence of ethical reflection on moral action. (...) In the study at hand, we attempted to cross-validate this pattern of results in the German-speaking countries and surveyed 417 professors using a replication-extension research design. Our results indicate a successful replication of the original effect that ethicists do not behave any morally better compared to other academics across the vast majority of normative issues. The aim of this note is to determine whether certain non-o-minimal expansions of o-minimal theories which are known to be NIP, are also distal. We observe that while tame pairs of o-minimal structures and the real field with a discrete multiplicative subgroup have distal theories, dense pairs of o-minimal structures and related examples do not.

It is a central tenet of ethical intuitionism as defended by W. D. Ross and others that moral theory should reflect the convictions of mature moral agents. Hence, intuitionism is plausible to the extent that it corresponds to our well-considered moral judgments. After arguing for this claim, I discuss whether intuitionists offer an empirically adequate account of our moral obligations. I do this by applying recent empirical research by John Mikhail that is based on the idea of a universal moral (...) grammar to a number of claims implicit in W. D. Ross’s normative theory. I argue that the results at least partly vindicate intuitionism. (shrink)

Abstrakt Der vorliegende Artikel befasst sich mit der Theorie des Schönen und der Schönheit im Denken des Johannes Scottus Eriugena, basierend auf seinem Hauptwerk Periphyseon, den ‚Aulae sidereae‘, einem Gedicht Eriugenas, und dem Kommentar zur Schrift ‚Über die himmlische Rangfolge‘ des Pseudo-Dionysius Areopagita. Dazu werden zunächst die metaphysischen Grundlagen für eine Theorie des Schönen im System des Eriugena, wie er sie im s.o. erarbeitet, kurz und prägnant vorgestellt: Für Eriugena ist das Seiende eine Erscheinung und Manifestation Gottes, des unsagbaren Prinzips, (...) des Einen. Danach wird aufgezeigt, wie Eriugena das Schöne als Konkretwerdung des Einen denkt, wobei zuerst die Schönheit der Natur besprochen wird, um dann einen Blick auf den Sonderfall der menschengemachten Kunst zu werfen. Existe em Friedrich von Hayek, e isso mais do que em outros economistas contemporâneos, uma teoria completa da "mão invisível" do mercado, teoria essa que Hayek formula de acordo com o vocabulárìo da moderna teoria dos sistemas. Para o teórico da economia, com efeito, o mercado constitui uma ordem auto-organizada que funciona segundo um sistema de comunicação cujas duas faces, inseparáveis uma da outra, são o direito e os preços. Cada um destes canais do processo comunicativo é portador de comunicação (...) efectiva, sendo, por isso, capaz de exercer um efeito real no comportamento dos agentes económicos individuais, ou seja, de fazer com que estes se insiram de forma exacta e efectiva no sistema económico global, e isso apesar de, por motivo da enorme complexidade da economia, nenhum deles, por si só, poder ter um conhecimento global do sistema. Por outro lado, o artigo mostra também de que modo os mesmos canais de comunicação permitem que a economia global se adapte a cada acção livremente decidida pelos agentes económicos individuais. Em suma, o autor do artigo mostra-nos de que modo a teoria de Hayek, de facto, constitui uma "explicação de prìncípio", nova sobretudo pela clareza e pela nitidez da sua formulação, daquilo que continua a ser um estranho paradoxo, a saber, que a liberdade económica possa, sob determinadas condições de estrutura, produzir, não anarquia nem desorganização, mas sim, bem pelo contrário, uma forma de ordem social altamente sofisticada e que, de outra forma, ninguém saberia criar: a divisão mundial do trabalho. There is in Fríedrích von Hayek, more than in any other contemporary economist, a complete theory of the market "invisible hand"; a theory which Hayek formulates in accordance with the vocabulary of the modern theory of systems. As a matter of fact, to the theoretician of economics the market constitutes a self-organized order, which functions in terms of a communication system, the two faces of which are law and prices, and which, as such, are inseparable one from the other. Each one of these channels of the communicative process carries effective communication, thus being able to exert a real effect upon the behavior of individual economic agents, that is, of inserting these ones, in exact and effective form, in the global economic system, something that happens in spite of the fact that neither of them, by themselves, are able to get a global knowledge of the system, something that must be expected due to the enormous complexity of the economy. On the other hand, the article also demonstrates in which way the same channels of communication permit the global economy to adapt to each action freely decided by the individual economic agent. In short, the article demonstrates in which way Hayek's theory, chiefly new because of the clarity and sharpness of its formulation, in fact, constitutes an "explanation of principle" of that which continues to be a strange paradox, namely that economic freedom can, under certain structural conditions, originate neither anarchy nor disorganization, but, on the contrary, a highly sophisticated form of social order, which nobody in any other way would know how to create: the world division of labor. In this article, I try to reconstitute the inchoative debate that took place between Ricœur and Grünbaum concerning the epistemology of Freudian psychoanalysis. The debate was more inchoative than effective because of its asymmetry. First, I will underline the originality of Ricœur’s theory of motivation and causality. Then, I will examine the rest of Grünbaum’s objections: the overvaluation of clinical relationship and language, the ontological specificity of psychical reality, the narrative originality of the psychoanalytical explanation and the status of symbol. Nous prendrons pour point de départ la célèbre distinction de Winnicott entre un vrai soi et un faux soi ou, en d'autres termes, empruntés à la phénoménologie, entre un soi authentique et un soi inauthentique . Mais le soi est une notion qui ne va pas sans soulever bien des difficultés, y compris aux yeux des spécialistes de l'œuvre de Winnicott, ne serait-ce que dans son rapport au moi. Il nous semble cependant possible d'élucider certaines d'entre elles grâce à l'élaboration (...) par la phénoménologie heideggérienne puis sartrienne des concepts de soi, d'authenticité et d'inauthenticité. En effet, pour Heidegger, le Dasein ne saurait être un moi au sens d'un ego substantiel mais le Dasein est un soi , un être dont le mode d'être est irréductible à celui d'un objet subsistant et qui peut se "choisir" lui-même, se gagner ou bien se perdre . De ce point de vue, l'authenticité est tout d'abord une manière possible d'exister, et si le Dasein peut être soi sur le mode de l'authenticité, il peut l'être également sur le mode privatif de la fuite et de l'inauthenticité. Reprenant le concept heideggérien d'authenticité, Sartre l'enrichit, nous semble-t-il, en insistant sur l'impossibilité pour l'existant d'être ce qu'il est. Ainsi, contrairement au soi inauthentique qui ne cesse de se fuir dans ce qu'on peut appeler un faux soi, le soi authentique ou vrai soi assume son existence et, par conséquent, aussi bien la contingence de son être que sa liberté. Parece-nos possível, entretanto, elucidar algumas dentre essas noções por meio da elaboração da fenomenologia heideggeriana e, em seguida, por meio da sartriana, dos conceitos de si mesmo, de autenticidade e de inautenticidade. Com efeito, para Heidegger, o Dasein não seria um ser, um eu , no sentido de um ego substancial, mas o Dasein é um si-mesmo , um ser cujo modo de ser é irredutível àquele de um objeto subsistente e que pode "escolher" a si mesmo, se ganhar ou mesmo se perder . Assim, contrariamente ao si-mesmo inautêntico que não cessa de fugir para isto que poder-se-ia chamar de falso si-mesmo, o si-mesmo autêntico ou verdadeiro si-mesmo assume sua existência e, por consequência, tanto a contingência de seu ser como sua liberdade. Desse modo, nós tentaremos mostrar que é possível retomar e aprofundar fenomenologicamente a concepção winnicottiana de verdadeiro e falso si-mesmo.We begin with Winnicott's well-known distinction between a true and a false self, or, in terms borrowed from phenomenology, between an authentic and an unauthentic self. Self, however, is a notion that raises many difficulties also for Winnicott scholars, even if only in its relation with the I [me]. Yet it seems possible to elucidate some of those notions by way of a Heideggerian phenomenology followed by a Sartrean phenomenology of the concepts of self, authenticity and unauthenticity. In fact, for Heidegger the Dasein is not a being, an I , in the sense of a substantial ego, but rather a self , a being whose mode of being is irreducible to that of a subsisting object and that can "choose" itself, gain itself , and even loose itself . From this point of view, authenticity is above all a possible mode of existing, and if the Dasein can be itself in the authentic way, it can likewise be in the deprived mode of fleeing and of unauthenticity. Returning to the Heideggerian concept of authenticity, Sartre enriches – it seem to us – by underlining the impossibility for the existent of being what it is. Thus, unlike the unauthentic self that cannot but flee towards that which we might call a false self, the authentic or true self takes on its existence, and therefore also takes on both the contingency of its being and its freedom. Hence, we will try to show that it is possible phenomenologically to resume and go deeper into the Winnicottian conception of the true and false self. (shrink)

O presente artigo pretende sustentar que o diagnóstico adorniano sobre perda da experiência qualitativa do tempo no expressionismo de Schoenberg pode ser desdobrado a partir da mobilização de dois conceitos da musicologia: o trabalho temático e a harmonia tonal. Ambos os conceitos estão associados a procedimentos compositivos em virtude dos quais logrou-se, na música anterior ao expressionismo, uma continuidade temporal que obedecia a uma necessidade, isto é, não contingente, ou fortuita. A dissolução da continuidade temporal na obra expressionista de Schoenberg (...) é, portanto, resultado do abandono destes mesmos procedimentos. (shrink)

Deux inscriptions découvertes à une centaine de mètres de la Synagogue font connaître des oί εν Δήλω Ίσραηλΐται οί άπαρχόμενοι είς ιερόν άγιον Άργαριζείν. Il s'agit de Samaritains comme l'indiquent la déclaration d'appartenance au Garizim et le nom d'Israëlites. Ces inscriptions ont la double utilité de révéler une nouvelle communauté étrangère à Délos et d'enrichir le dossier, encore très maigre, de la diaspora samaritaine. La date des inscriptions, fondée sur la seule paléographie, reste imprécise : la plus ancienne doit remonter (...) à la première moitié du IIe siècle ; la plus récente peut être postérieure à la destruction Temple du Garizim en 129 av. J.-C. Les « Israélites de Délos » possédaient leur local propre à 100 m au Nord de la Synagogue, nouveau qui invite à reconsidérer l'implantation hébraïque à Délos. (shrink)

De concert avec ses fonctions politiques - et cela sur vingt ans -, Montaigne rédigea ses Essais que l'on considère trop souvent comme séparés de ses responsabilités publiques aujourd'hui reléguées à l'arrière plan de sa carrière d'écrivain. Nous voudrions arguer que ses Essais sont indissociables de sa vie publique. Certes, les préoccupations littéraires et politiques de Montaigne changent avec son temps, mais ce qui fonde la forme de l'essai - à savoir un discours profondément inscrit dans le présent - ne (...) permet pas d'établir une différence théorique entre le privé et le public puisque les deux sont pratiquement inséparables quand ils sont réduits à leur unité la plus stricte qui se rapporte essentiellement au quotidien, car dans l'immédiat du vécu, le privé et le public sont pratiquement indissociables. Si une philosophie se dégage indubitablement des Essais, elle a peut-être plus à voir avec la manipulation constante effectuée par Montaigne entre le particulier (vie privée) et l'universel (vie publique) que sur le contenu de tel précepte moral ou dogme des écoles antiques. La temporalité de l'écriture et celle des événements ne sont pas en synchronie dans les Essais et Montaigne joue constamment sur cette image d'un livre privé (hors de toute temporalité historique) alors que les Essais sont conçus comme un objet lui permettant précisément l'accès à la vie publique. Cette philosophie du quotidien et du temps présent qui ressort des Essais ne saurait mettre à l'écart les considérations publiques et historiques qui rythment toujours l'écriture d'une vie bien particulière. We consider the question of when an expansion of a first-order topological structure has the property that every open set definable in the expansion is definable in the original structure. This question has been investigated by Dolich, Miller and Steinhorn in the setting of ordered structures as part of their work on the property of having o-minimal open core. We answer the question in a fairly general setting and provide conditions which in practice are often easy to check. O episcopado francês e a lei de Separação - Reflexão sobre um processo de reconhecimento ( The French episcopate and the Law of Separation -Reflection on a process of recognition - L`épiscopat français et la loi de Séparation - Retour sur un processus de reconnaissance). O “princípio da modernidade” – introduzido pela Revolução Francesa e ratificado por um conjunto de leis durante o século XIX – rompe com o tradicional “princípio do Estado confessional católico” e estabelece o regime de separação (...) entre a Igreja Católica e o Estado francês. Como a Igreja recebeu o regime de separação entre Igreja e Estado, constituído à sua revelia e, geralmente, contra ela? O artigo propõe-se a responder a pergunta, destacando dois pontos de vista: a) o da ruptura, segundo o qual a instituição católica, marcada pelo princípio do Estado cristão, nutre forte hostilidade contra o regime laico, ainda que estabelecendo com ele acordos práticos; b) e o da continuidade, sob o qual a Igreja acolhe e defende o princípio da “sã laicidade” e justifica a liberdade pública de consciência. Baseado em minuciosa leitura de documentos oficiais da Igreja e do episcopado francês, o artigo dialoga com os dois pontos de vista evocados, analisando seus termos e interpretando criticamente seus pressupostos e suas teses. Palavras-chave: Estado confessional; Estado laico; Laicidade; Episcopado francês.The "principle of modernity" - introduced by the French Revolution and ratified by a set of laws during the nineteenth century - breaks with the traditional "principle of the Catholic confessional state" and establishes the separation between the Catholic Church and the French State. How did the Church receive the system of separation of church and state, made in absentia and generally against the church? This paper seeks to answer that question, highlighting two points of view: a) the break, according to which the Catholic institution, marked by the principle of the Christian State, nourishes strong hostility against the secular regime, although establishing practical agreements with such regime b) the point of view of continuity, under which the Church welcomes and embraces the principle of "healthy secularism" and justifies the public liberty of conscience. Based on careful reading of official documents of the Church and of the French episcopate, this article dialogues with the two mentioned points of view , analyses and interprets in a critical way their terms, assumptions and theses. Résumé Le “principe de la modernité” – introduit par la Révolution française et ratifié par un ensemble de lois durant le XIXème siècle – rompt avec le traditionnel “principe de l’État confessionnel catholique” et établit le régime de séparation entre l’Église catholique et l’État français. Comment l’Église a-t-elle reçu le régime de séparation entre Église et État, institué malgré elle, et, généralement, contre elle? L’article se propose de répondre à cette question en soulignant deux points de vue: a) celui de la rupture qui fait que l’institution catholique, marquée par le principe de l’État chrétien, nourrit une forte hostilité envers le régime laïque, bien qu’elle passe des accords pratiques avec lui; b) celui de la continuité, qui fait que l’Église accueille et défend le principe de la “saine laïcité” et justifie la liberté publique de conscience. We establish the choice property, a weak analogue of definable choice, for certain tame expansions of o‐minimal structures. Most noteworthily, this property holds for dense pairs of real closed fields, as well as for expansions of o‐minimal structures by a dense independent set.

A teoria da Justiça Social sofreu uma revolução ao longo dos três últimos decénios do século xx: discussões intensas levaram à formação de um rico conjunto de concepções acerca das exigências de Justiça ao nível da Nação. O presente artigo, porém, interroga-se sobretudo sobre a questão de saber até que ponto a resposta correcta, ou, pelo menos, a mais plausível, à questão acerca do que seja uma Nação Justa pode ser directamente transposta para o nível de uma organização, prìvada ou (...) pública, de modo a igualmente se poder responder à pergunta sobre o que seja uma Empresa Justa. Mais ainda, o autor procura também saber até que ponto aquilo que se defina ser uma Empresa Justa pode ser extrapolado à escala planetária de modo a se dar igualmente resposta à pergunta sobre o que seja um Mundo Justo. The theory of Social Justice has undergone a revolution during the last three decades of the 20 th century: intense discussions led to the creation of a rich set of concepts about the requirements of Justice at the level of Nation. This paper, however, raises questions mainly about the topic of getting to know to what extent the correct answer - or at least the more plausible one - to the question about what a Just Nation is, can be directly transposed to the organizational level, be it private or public, so that one can equally answer the question about what a Just Enterprise is. Moreover, the author also seeks to know to what extent that which may be defined as a Just Enterprise can be extrapolated to a planetary scale, in order to give an answer to the question about what a Just World is. Depois tentarei esboçar uma reaproximação entre ambas posições ao mostrar como o conceito normativo de reconhecimento de Honneth não é oposto a argumentos funcionalistas, e sim que ele contém uma dimensão socioteórica: a ideia de que a reprodução social e a evolução social revolvem ao redor de lutas pela interpretação de normas (...) sociais centrais. Ao iluminar o lado socioteórico do reconhecimento, é possível esboçar um modelo de Teoria Crítica da sociedade que, de fato, corresponda às características descritivas e normativa delineadas pelo próprio Marx. No entanto, o preço desta reaproximação para a Teoria Crítica de Honneth é uma ênfase maior na divisão do trabalho como o mecanismo central da reprodução social. (shrink)

This paper answers several open questions around structures with o‐minimal open core. We construct an expansion of an o‐minimal structure by a unary predicate such that its open core is a proper o‐minimal expansion of. We give an example of a structure that has an o‐minimal open core and the exchange property, yet defines a function whose graph is dense. Finally, we produce an example of a structure that has an o‐minimal open core and definable Skolem functions, but is not (...) o‐minimal. (shrink)

Can we really trust the things our bodies tell us about the world? This book reveals how deeply intertwined cultural practices of art and science questioned the authority of the human body in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Focusing on Henry Fuseli, Anne-Louis Girodet, and Philippe de Loutherbourg, it argues that Romantic artworks participated in a widespread crisis concerning the body as a source of reliable scientific knowledge. Rarely discussed sources and new archival material illuminate how artists (...) drew upon contemporary sciences and inverted them, undermining their founding empiricist principles. The result is an alternative history of Romantic visual culture that is deeply embroiled in controversies around electricity, mesmerism, physiognomy, and other popular sciences. This volume reorients conventional accounts of Romanticism and some of its most important artworks, while also putting forward a new model for the kinds of questions that we can ask about them. O Brasil, diz Millôr Fernandes, tem um enorme passado pela frente e, esse projeto de nação ergue-se com a memória coletiva. Nessa via, o objetivo do estudo é analisar bibliometricamente como a temática ‘memória coletiva’ se apresenta indexada no acervo da literatura científica da Ciência da Informação - Brapci. A pesquisa estabelece métricas sobre o quantitativo anual de publicações, os periódicos e os autores envolvidos, as palavras chaves mais frequentes. Estabelecido o recorte dos últimos dez anos completos, são recuperados 50 (...) artigos. O diagnóstico nota a sustentabilidade da produção científica relacionada ao tema memória coletiva e, com o debate das práticas patrimoniais e memorialistas alinham-se ações em prol da visibilidade, do acautelamento e da proteção do Patrimônio Cultural. Conclui-se que entre os anos de 2017 e 2021 a temática memória coletiva adentra na Ciência da Informação, cingindo construtos em prol da ética, da transparência e dos direitos humanos. A temática processa amplas provocações e reflexões que, por meio das narrativas da memória e do esquecimento estão ligadas ao status teórico-linguístico inerente às interfaces do Ser Informação. How should we read Foucault's claims, in his late work, for the relevance of ‘aesthetic criteria’ to politics? What is Foucault's implicit understanding of the nature of aesthetics and the autonomy of the aesthetic sphere? Would an ethics which gave a place to the aesthetic legitimize a politics of manipulation, brutality and aggression ‐ in short, a ‘fascist’ politics ‐ as some of Foucault's critics argue? In this paper, I examine key accounts of the fascist ‘aestheticization of politics’ ‐ from (...) Walter Benjamin's classic essay, ‘The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction’ (1936), to Philippe Lacoue‐Labarthe's work on the relation between Heidegger's philosophy and the fascist theme of politics as the plastic art of the state. Through a discussion of Foucault's late work, the paper demonstrates the connection between Foucault's turn to ancient Greek ethical practices and his call for a contemporary renewal of the idea of ethics as an art of living. The aim of the paper is to show in what ways the ethico‐political position which is presented in Foucault's late work, far from contributing to a fascist politics, in fact provides ways of thinking about the relationship between the aesthetic and the political which avoid both mindless radicalism and totalitarian narcissism. In doing so, the key question is, ‘What's aesthetic about Foucault's “aesthetics of existence"?’. (shrink)

Two articles by Lewis Feuer caught my attention in the '40s when 1 was wondering, asa student physicist, about the relations of physics to philosophy and to the world in turmoil. One was his essay on 'The Development of Logical Empiricism' (1941), and the other his critical review of Philipp Frank's biography of Einstein, 'Philosophy and the Theory of Relativity' (1947). How extraordinary it was to find so intelligent, independent, critical, and humane a mind; and furthermore he went further, as (...) I soon realized when I looked for his name on other publications. I recall arguing with myself over his exploration of 'Indeterminacy and Economic Development' (1948), and even more when I read his 'Dialectical Materialism and Soviet Science' (1949). More papers, and then the fascinating, sometimes irritating, always insightful, books. His monograph on Psychoanalysis and Ethics 1955, the beautiful sociological and humanist study of Spinoza and the Rise of Liberalism (1958), his essays on 'The Social Roots of Einstein's Theory of Relativity' (1971) together with the book on Einstein and the Genera tions of Science (1974), the splendid reader from the works of Marx and Engels, Basic Writings on Politics and Philosophy (1959) which was a major text of the '60s, the stimulating essays on the social formation which seems to have been required for a modern scientific movement to develop, set forth most convincingly in The Scientific Intellectual (1963). La renta básica se nos presenta en la obra de Philippe van Parijs como una propuesta política filosóficamente argumentada, de modo tal que convencerá tanto al teórico de la justicia como al ciudadano que votará su implantación. En este artículo analizamos la argumentación de van Parijs mostrando cómo la efectividad política de sus tesis sólo se sostiene a costa de reducir el debate sobre la renta básica a los términos de su propia concepción de la ética. Ponemos en duda, (...) por nuestra parte, el alcance de esta reducción sobre un doble plano: diluye por completo la dimensión prudencial de toda argumentación política, y no deja más alternativa que la educación sentimental para quienes no se dejen convencer por el equilibrio reflexivo.
