The Ukraine Crisis and Shift in us Foreign Policy.Michał Woźniak - 2016 - International Studies. Interdisciplinary Political and Cultural Journal 18 (2):87-102.
War in Ukraine and the Russian annexation of Crimea are the events that changed the US policy towards Russia. The events in Ukraine forced the United States to take a closer look at Eastern and Central Europe. The United States’ policy during the Ukrainian crisis has been limited to sanctions and strong statements so far because in Ukraine there is an asymmetry of interests. Ukraine is much more important to Russia than to the United States. The United States may be (...)

Sprawiedliwe nierówności a aksjologia ładu instytucjonalnego.Michał Gabriel Woźniak - 2008 - Annales. Ethics in Economic Life 11 (1):233-248.
The author of article proves that in the era of the globalization the institutional order of national economy is influenced by the distorted competition which results in domination of the managers and technicians of great corporations. It is their businesses that define the economic policy. In the world of asymmetric information, oligopolistic competition, political market and progressive commercialization of the axiological sphere the rules of thinking and acting are merely reduced to the strategy of self-advantage. This situation results in ineffective (...)

Hospital Statistics as a Tool for Obtaining Data Necessary in the Healthcare Entity Management Process.Aleksandra Sierocka, Bożena Woźniak, Petre Iltchev & Michał Marczak - 2013 - Studies in Logic, Grammar and Rhetoric 35 (1):169-177.
Statistical methods used by healthcare entities enable the collection of various information about the structure and characteristics of treated patients. They are an important source of knowledge, and form a database that plays an important role in entity management theory. In the presented study, we analysed the hospital stays of patients treated in all hospital wards of the 3rd City Hospital in Łodź during 2012. The following, in particular, were taken into account: admittance procedure, discharge procedure, age and sex of (...)

Differences in Financing of Admission Rooms (ARs) and Hospital Emergency Rooms (ERs) Between the Years 2013 and 2014, Using an Example of a Lodz Municipal Hospital. [REVIEW]Bożena Woźniak, Aleksandra Sierocka, Petre Iltchev & Michał Marczak - 2014 - Studies in Logic, Grammar and Rhetoric 39 (1):167-177.
The goal of the article is to compare methods of financing ARs and ERs based on the data from the 1st half of 2013 and 1st half of 2014 from the K. Jonscher 3rd Municipal Hospital in Lodz. All the stays in the AR/ER in the 1st half of 2013 and the 1st half of 2014 were analysed. Based on the presented data, it can be clearly seen that the new method of financing AR/ER services proposed by the NFZ will (...)

Neural Models for Imputation of Missing Ozone Data in Air-Quality Datasets.Ángel Arroyo, Álvaro Herrero, Verónica Tricio, Emilio Corchado & Michał Woźniak - 2018 - Complexity 2018:1-14.
Ozone is one of the pollutants with most negative effects on human health and in general on the biosphere. Many data-acquisition networks collect data about ozone values in both urban and background areas. Usually, these data are incomplete or corrupt and the imputation of the missing values is a priority in order to obtain complete datasets, solving the uncertainty and vagueness of existing problems to manage complexity. In the present paper, multiple-regression techniques and Artificial Neural Network models are applied to (...)

Automatic control of physiological variables is one of the most active areas in biomedical engineering. This paper is centered in the prediction of the analgesic variables evolution in patients undergoing surgery. The proposal is based on the use of hybrid intelligent modelling methods. The study considers the Analgesia Nociception Index to assess the pain in the patient and remifentanil as intravenous analgesic. The model proposed is able to make a one-step-ahead prediction of the remifentanil dose corresponding to the current state (...)

Wonderful Knowledge. Aquinas on the Immutability and Eternity of God’s Knowledge The general concept of knowledge is a kind of concept closely akin to transcententals: its use is not restricted to a certain kind of being, and it does not itself designate a kind of entity. Such concepts may be applied to God not as metaphors: when we grasp (through the analysis of cases of finite knowledge) some general traits of knowledge as such, we can show that God has knowledge, (...)

In this paper we study the status of the arithmetical completeness of dynamic logic. We prove that for finitistic proof systems for dynamic logic results beyond arithmetical completeness are very unlikely. The role of the set of natural numbers is carefully analyzed.

This essay comprises a selection of commentaries aimed at creating dialogue around the theme Ethics at the centre of global and local challenges. Medical Acts and Conscientious Objection: What Can a Physician be Compelled to Do.Nathan K. Gamble & Michal Pruski - 2019 - The New Bioethics 25 (3):262-282.
A key question has been underexplored in the literature on conscientious objection: if a physician is required to perform ‘medical activities,’ what is a medical activity? This paper explores the question by employing a teleological evaluation of medicine and examining the analogy of military conscripts, commonly cited in the conscientious objection debate. It argues that physicians (and other healthcare professionals) can only be expected to perform and support medical acts – acts directed towards their patients’ health. That is, physicians cannot (...)

The purpose of this study was to measure professional and personal values among nurses, and to identify the factors affecting these values. The participants were 323 Israeli nurses, who were asked about 36 personal values and 20 professional values. The three fundamental professional nursing values of human dignity, equality among patients, and prevention of suffering, were rated first. The top 10 rated values all concerned nurses' responsibility towards patients. Altruism and confidentiality were not highly rated, and health promotion and nursing (...)

Complete Axiomatisations of Properties of Finite Sets.Thomas Agotnes & Michal Walicki - 2008 - Logic Journal of the IGPL 16 (3):293-313.
We study a logic whose formulae are interpreted as properties of a finite set over some universe. The language is propositional, with two unary operators inclusion and extension, both taking a finite set as argument. We present a basic Hilbert-style axiomatisation, and study its completeness. The main results are syntactic and semantic characterisations of complete extensions of the logic.

Language not only reflects and cocreates social universes but can also be and is performative regarding the planetary common good, e.g., through international treaties and agreements. This paper investigates the rationale and feasibility of altering the language used by Glasgow Climate Pact to a posthuman mode that addresses the issue of more-than-human inequality by becoming inclusive toward nonhuman actors, and presents a selection of edited excerpts. The main findings state that (1) the language of the Glasgow Climate Pact is inadequate (...)

    Ethnography and Jewish Ethics.Michal S. Raucher - 2016 - Journal of Religious Ethics 44 (4):636-658.
This essay offers a Jewish approach to ethnography in religious ethics. Following the work of other ethnographers working in religious ethics, I explore how an ethnographic account of reproductive ethics among Haredi Jewish women in Jerusalem enhances and improves Jewish ethical discourse. I argue that ethnography should become an integral part of Jewish ethics for three reasons. First, with a contextual approach to guidance and application of law and norms, an ethnographic approach to Jewish ethics parallels the way ethical decisions (...)

    Teleology and Defining Sex.Nathan K. Gamble & Michal Pruski - 2018 - The New Bioethics 24 (2):176-189.
Disorders of sexual differentiation lead to what is often referred to as an intersex state. This state has medical, as well as some legal, recognition. Nevertheless, the question remains whether intersex persons occupy a state in between maleness and femaleness or whether they are truly men or women. To answer this question, another important conundrum needs to be first solved: what defines sex? The answer seems rather simple to most people, yet when morphology does not coincide with haplotypes, and genetics (...)

    Acts and distance—a commentary on Brummett's ‘when conscientious objection runs amok’.Michal Pruski - 2022 - Clinical Ethics 17 (2):211-216.
In his ‘When conscientious objection runs amok: A physician refusing human immunodeficiency virus preventative to a bisexual patient’, Brummett has argued that Catholic physicians should not be able to raise conscientious objections to HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis for bisexual patients, as this constitutes discrimination. Brummett argues that such a conscientious objection represents an instance of conscience creep, which he argues is undesirable. Here I re-analyse the case presented by Brummett using a teleological framework and making reference to Catholic teaching on cooperation (...)

Borders and Boundaries: Eritrean Graduates Reflect on Their Medical Interpreting Training.Yonatan N. Gez & Michal Schuster - 2018 - The European Legacy 23 (7-8):821-836.
ABSTRACTThis article examines the professional boundaries and obstacles encountered by Eritrean graduates of a medical interpreter course in Israel. Through a series of personal interviews held about a year after their graduation, we identified professional and personal boundaries as a recurring theme. Drawing on the inspiring work of Erving Goffman, we discuss the tension between their “normative roles” and “typical roles.” By deploying two heuristic two-way typologies—in reference to the service provider or the patient, and in reference to formal or (...)

The approximate number system represents rational numbers: The special case of an empty set.Michal Pinhas, Rut Zaks-Ohayon & Joseph Tzelgov - 2021 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 44.
We agree with Clarke and Beck that the approximate number system represents rational numbers, and we demonstrate our support by highlighting the case of the empty set – the non-symbolic manifestation of zero. It is particularly interesting because of its perceptual and semantic uniqueness, and its exploration reveals fundamental new insights about how numerical information is represented.

Dlaczego Anglosasi nie lubią Foucaulta?Michał Podniesiński - 2020 - Civitas. Studia Z Filozofii Polityki 12:149-174.
The author presents a criticism of the modern concept of power and, specifically, of the concept of ’sovereignty’ as articulated by Michel Foucault. What does it consist in, and what meaning does the undermining, by a French philosopher, of the idea of the legitimisation of power have for a modern state? A polemic with Foucault’s views, by Charles Taylor, serves as a departure point for the aforesaid considerations.

In this collection of essays, experts in the field of consciousness research shed light on the intricate relationship between conscious and unconscious states of mind. Advancing the debate on consciousness research, this book puts centre stage the topic of commonalities and differences between conscious and unconscious contents of the mind. The collection of cutting-edge chapters offers a breadth of research perspectives, with some arguing that unconscious states have been unjustly overlooked and deserve recognition for their richness and wide scope.

This paper consists of three parts. The first is devoted to the role of the Athenian plague in Thucydides’ History of the Peloponnesian War. There are indications that the civil war that broke out in the country, weakened by plague, was not simply the result of a historical and degraded human nature. Instead of using evil human nature as the key for understanding each social conflict, I suggest interpreting the Athenian civil war as a symptom of non-egalitarian social relations. The (...)

"Meeting" is one of these concepts, which in the most recent philosophy have received significant meaning. In some interpretations it is the instruction to "meet" – so to establish the unmediated relation with the Other – is the factor, which allows to break free from the pressure of the "Hegelian bite" and problems resulting from it. It turns out that the ennoblement of the subject made by the German idealism in fact limited the reality only to its exteriorisation – and (...)

Since the publication of the successful animal trials of the Biobag, a prototypical extrauterine support for extremely premature neonates, numerous ethicists have debated the potential implications of such a device. Some have argued that the Biobag represents a natural evolution of traditional newborn intensive care, while others believe that the Biobag would create a new class of being for the patients housed within. Kingma and Finn argued inBioethicsfor making a categorical distinction between fetuses, newborns and ‘gestatelings’ in a Biobag on (...)

Michał Rogalski: The Variety of the Polish Catholic Modernism. An Overview of the Reception Process.Michał Rogalski - 2020 - Journal for the History of Modern Theology/Zeitschrift für Neuere Theologiegeschichte 27 (2):197-219.
This paper describes the process of reception of Catholic Modernism in Poland as well as the Polish contribution to this movement.
