Two types of variables impact face recognition: estimator variables that cannot be controlled and system variables that are under direct control by the criminal justice system. This article addresses some of the reasons that eyewitnesses are prone to making errors, particularly false identifications. It provides a discussion of the differences between typical facial memory and eyewitness studies and shows that the two areas generally find similar results. It reviews estimator variable effects and focuses on system variables. Traditional facial recognition researchers (...) rarely study system variables but reveal important factors that police and policy makers should consider with regard to eyewitness identification and the courts. It concludes that there is still room for considerable improvement in identification procedures and wants to encourage more system variable research as a means of reducing wrongful convictions. Background: During the COVID-19 pandemic, frontline workers faced a series of challenges balancing family and work responsibilities. These challenges included making decisions about how to reduce COVID-19 exposure to their families while still carrying out their employment duties and caring for their children. We sought to understand how frontline workers made these decisions and how these decisions impacted their experiences.Methods: Between October 2020 and May 2021, we conducted 61 semi-structured interviews in English or Spanish, with individuals who continued to work (...) outside of the home during the pandemic and had children living at home. Interviews were recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed using abductive methods.Results: Frontline workers experienced moral distress, the inability to act in accordance with their values and obligations because of internal or external constraints. Their moral distress was a result of the tensions they felt as workers and parents, which sometimes led them to feel like they had to compromise on either or both responsibilities. Individuals felt morally conflicted because 1) their COVID-19 work exposures presented risk that often jeopardized their family’s health; 2) their work hours often conflicted with their increased childcare responsibilities; and 3) they felt a duty to their colleagues, patients/customers, and communities to continue to show-up to work.Conclusions: Our findings point to a need to expand the concept of moral distress to include the perspectives of frontline workers outside of the healthcare professions and the fraught decisions that workers make outside of work that may impact their moral distress. Expanding the concept of moral distress also allows for a justice-based framing that can focus attention on the disparities inherent in much frontline work and can justify programmatic recommendations, like increasing paid childcare opportunities, to alleviate moral distress. Ibn Rušd a consacré un certain nombre de travaux auxPremiers Analytiquesd'Aristote. Dans une série d'opusculesconsécutifs à sonCommentaire moyendesAPr.et dont la rédaction s'étale sur plus de vingt ans il s'est trouvé confronté à un problème spécifique à la syllogistique modale, celui du mode de la conclusion dans les syllogismes mixtes.Le problème peut se poser ainsi: Aristote a établi au début d'APr.un principe formel de déduction, le principe d'attribution universelle (APr.I, 1, 24b26'30). Appliqué dans la syllogistique modale ce principe tel quel s'avère (...) insuffisant. Sa généralité ne permet pas de l'appliquer de manière univoque dans tous les syllogismes modaux. Les commentateurs ont dû l'interpreter pour garder une cohérence aux declarations d'Aristote. Exposant les interpretations des commentateurs, principalement al-Fārābī et Alexandra, à partir duGrand commentaired'al-Fārābī auxAPr., Ibn Rušd les critique respectivement. Appliqué selon l'interpretation d'Alexandre, le principe d'attribution universelle n'est valable que pour les syllogismes modaux dont une des prémisses est nécessaire, l'autre assertorique; suivant l'interprétation d'al-Fārābī, il ne se vérifie que dans le cas où la mineure est possible. Averroès propose quant à lui d'abord deux premieres solutions. Ce principe formel de déduction aurait des conditions d'application differentes suivant les differences modales des prémisses mineures dans les syllogismes mixtes (première solution), ou aurait deux acceptions, l'une générale et l'autre propre a chaque modalité (deuxieme solution). Ces solutions ne sont pas satisfaisantes car elles mettent en cause l'unité et l'universalité du principe d'attribution universelle tel qu'Aristote l'a établi. Quelle est l'utilité, s'interroge Averroès, d'un principe qui ne se vérifie pas pour toutes les modalités ou qui ne s'applique pas à toutes les prémisses, dès lors que le traité desAPr.doit fournir des principes formels et universels de déduction? Et pourquoi Aristote a-t-il défini le principe d'attribution universelle sans différencier son application selon chacune des trois premisses modales? Revenant a la fin de sa carriere a une exegese litterale des propos d'Aristote et sans rappeler les solutions précédentes, il propose une théorie de la modalisation des termes (quatrieme solution) pour sauver la littéralité des déclarations d'Aristote relatives au principe d'attribution universelle et au mode de la conclusion des syllogismes mixtes (APr., I, 9, 30al5–20). Bien que formellement insuffisante cette solution, qui a eu une postérité, propose une réflexion nouvelle sur la classification des propositions modales. (shrink)

Jamal al-Din al-Afghani (1838-97) was a pan-Islamic thinker, political activist, and journalist, who sought to revive Islamic thought and liberate the Muslim world from Western influence. Many aspects of his life and his background remain unknown or controversial, including his birthplace, his religious affiliation, and the cause of his death. He was likely born in Asadabad, near present-day Hamadan, Iran. His better known history begins when he was 18, with a one-year stay in India that coincided with the Sepoy (...) Mutiny of 1857-59. In what would become a life of constant travel, he soon went to Mecca to perform Hajj, before returning to Afghanistan to join the service of the country's ruler, Dost Mohammad Khan (1793-1863). He later sided with Dost's son Mohammad Aʻzam, who ultimately lost in a power struggle with his British-supported brother Sher Ali. Al-Afghani's political activism eventually took him to Paris, London, Tehran, Saint Petersburg, and Constantinople. It was during his second stay in Egypt (1871-79) that he cemented his role as a reformer. He found in Cairo a class of young intellectuals who gathered around him, established newspapers, and used these papers to disseminate his ideas. Chief among al-Afghani's Egyptian disciples were scholar Muhammad ʻAbduh, journalist ʻAbd Allah al-Nadim, and nationalist politicians Mustafa Kamil and Saʻd Zaghlul. Al-Afghani's influence on both modernist and traditionalist Islamic thought continues to the present. An activist who sought to effect change through political journalism and public speaking, he did not write many books. This treatise, entitled al-Radd ʻalā al-dahrīyīn (Refutation of the materialists), was a rebuttal of the views of the pro-British Sir Sayyid Ahmad Khan, who had argued that science is more important than religion in the rise of civilizations. First written in Persian following al-Afghani's exile from Egypt to India, it was translated into Arabic by his student Muhammad ʻAbduh, with the help of al-Afghani's assistant Arif Efendi. (shrink)

J. L. Schellenberg has constructed major arguments for atheism based on divine hiddenness in two separate works. This paper reviews these arguments and highlights how they are grounded in reflections on perfect divine love. However, Schellenberg also defends what he calls the ‘subject mode’ of religious scepticism. I argue that if one accepts Schellenberg's scepticism, then the foundation of his divine-hiddenness arguments is undermined by calling into question some of his conclusions regarding perfect divine love. In other words, if his (...) scepticism is correct, then Schellenberg's case for atheism cannot stand. Finally, I demonstrate how my argument avoids the many defences that Schellenberg has employed thus far in defending these particular atheistic arguments. (shrink)

L'une des voies d'accès légitimes à l'oeuvre foisonnante de Heidegger consiste à s'attacher à l'intérêt tout particulier qu'elle porte à la poésie dont il donnera, en effet, à partir du milieu des années trente - mais sans jamais la développer dans toutes ses conséquences - une interprétation originale et tout à fait remarquable. La grande poésie bien comprise n'aurait rien à voir avec le domaine subjectif de l'expression de sentiments, du témoignage d'un vécu intime, mais serait tout au contraire le (...) lieu même de la manifestation de la vérité originelle. Elle constituerait ainsi l'essence profonde de la langue comme dévoilement d'un monde et comme forme originelle de la pensée, laquelle est toujours pensée de l'étant en son être. C'est en s'efforçant de mettre pleinement au jour et dans toutes ses conséquences le sens d'une telle conception ontologique de la poésie que ce livre aboutit alors au constat que cette voie d'accès à l'oeuvre heideggérienne n'est - peut-être - rien d'autre que la "voie royale" permettant d'en donner enfin une lecture d'ensemble cohérente et complète. Et il apparaît alors que la déconstruction heideggérienne de la philosophie traditionnelle - qui conduit à rétrocéder vers l'essence poétique de la pensée reniée à partir de Platon - ne s'accomplit pas contre, mais bien pour celle-ci, car elle apporte la réponse originelle à la question de l'être, laquelle a toujours été la question fondamentale de la philosophie, mais que, dès le début, elle posait mal. I defend a one category ontology: an ontology that denies that we need more than one fundamental category to support the ontological structure of the world. Categorical fundamentality is understood in terms of the metaphysically prior, as that in which everything else in the world consists. One category ontologies are deeply appealing, because their ontological simplicity gives them an unmatched elegance and spareness. I’m a fan of a one category ontology that collapses the distinction between particular and property, replacing it (...) with a single fundamental category of intrinsic characters or qualities. We may describe the qualities as qualitative charactersor as modes, perhaps on the model of Aristotelian qualitative (nonsubstantial) kinds, and I will use the term “properties” interchangeably with “qualities”. The qualities are repeatable and reasonably sparse, although, as I discuss in section 2.6, there are empirical reasons that may suggest, depending on one’s preferred fundamental physical theory, that they include irreducibly intensive qualities. There are no uninstantiated qualities. I also assume that the fundamental qualitative natures are intrinsic, although physics may ultimately suggest that some of them are extrinsic. On my view, matter, concrete objects, abstract objects, and perhaps even spacetime are constructed from mereological fusions of qualities, so the world is simply a vast mixture of qualities, including polyadic properties (i.e., relations). This means that everything there is, including concrete objects like persons or stars, is a quality, a qualitative fusion, or a portion of the extended qualitative fusion that is the worldwhole. In this paper, I distinguish two conceptions of solidarity, which I call solidarity as beneficence and solidarity as mutual advantage. I argue that only the latter is capable of providing a complete foundation for national universal health care programs. On the mutual advantage account, the rationale for universal insurance is parallel to the rationale for a labor union’s “closed shop” policy. In both cases, mandatory participation is necessary in order to stop individuals free-riding on an ongoing system of mutually advantageous (...) cooperation. (shrink)

We define $\Psi $ -autoreducible sets given an autoreduction procedure $\Psi $. Then, we show that for any $\Psi $, a measurable class of $\Psi $ -autoreducible sets has measure zero. Using this, we show that classes of cototal, uniformly introenumerable, introenumerable, and hyper-cototal enumeration degrees all have measure zero. By analyzing the arithmetical complexity of the classes of cototal sets and cototal enumeration degrees, we show that weakly 2-random sets cannot be cototal and weakly 3-random sets cannot be of (...) cototal enumeration degree. Then, we see that this result is optimal by showing that there exists a 1-random cototal set and a 2-random set of cototal enumeration degree. For uniformly introenumerable degrees and introenumerable degrees, we utilize $\Psi $ -autoreducibility again to show the optimal result that no weakly 3-random sets can have introenumerable enumeration degree. This paper is an exercise in computational jurisprudence. It seems clear that the field of AI and Law should draw upon the insights of legal philosophers, whenever possible. But can the computational perspective offer anything in return? We explore this question by focusing on the concept of OWNERSHIP, which has been debated in the jurisprudential literature for centuries. Although the intellectual currents here flow mostly in one direction -from legal philosophy to AI- we show that there are also some insights (...) to be gained from a computational analysis of the OWNERSHIP relation. In particular, the paper suggests a computational explanation for the emergence of abstract property rights, divorced from concrete material objects. (shrink)
