The present paper was written as a contribution to ongoing methodological debates within the NCC project. We focus on the neural correlates of conscious perceptual episodes. Our claim is that the NCC notion, as applied to conscious perceptual episodes, needs to be reconceptualized. It mixes together the processing related to the perceived contents and the neural substrate of consciousness proper, i.e. mechanisms making the perceptual contents conscious. We thus propose that the perceptual NCC be divided into two constitutive subnotions. The (...) main theoretical idea that emerges as a consequence of this reconceptualization is that the neural correlate of a perceptual episode is formed in the neural interaction between content-processing and consciousness-conferring mechanisms. The paper elaborates this distinction, marshals some initial arguments in its favour, and tests it against some of the most debated theories of consciousness. (shrink)

Two important questions arise concerning the properties that constitute the phenomenal characters of our experiences: first, where these properties exist, and, second, whether they are tied to our consciousness of them. Such properties can either exist externally to the perceiving subject, or internally to her. This article argues that phenomenal characters, and specifically the phenomenal characters of colours, may exist independently of consciousness and that they are internal to the subject. We defend this combination of claims against a recent criticism (...) according to which the unconscious phenomenal character of colours exists externally to the subject. We defend internalism about (potentially unconscious) phenomenal character by appealing to recent neuroscientific and behavioural evidence, and by rejecting the claim that externalism about phenomenal character is dialectically in a better position than internalism. In addition, we briefly present certain difficulties for externalist views of phenomenal character. These concern cases where the perceptual relation fails, but a perceptual experience still results. These points suffice to defuse the externalist critique of our view, and support the internalist variant of the consciousness-independence claim as the most plausible account of the unconscious phenomenal character of colours. První z těchto prací se přesvědčivě pokouší vyvrátit populární relativistické a konstruktivistické teze, zatímco ta druhá předkládá obhajobu specifické formy relativismu zaměřené na filosofické propozice.

Contract cheating is currently one of the most serious academic integrity issues around the globe. Numerous studies have been conducted, mostly in English speaking countries. So far, no such research has been conducted in Czechia, and consequently there have been no specific data available on Czech students’ fraudulent behaviour. For this study, we created a questionnaire to obtain primary data on student usage of essay mills and their self-reported exposure to contract cheating. The questionnaire focused on students and graduates of (...) Czech universities and collected a total of 1016. Of that number, 8% of respondents admit having engaged in contract cheating. The questionnaire responses yielded useful information and insight into students’ attitudes regarding contract cheating and the extent of this phenomenon in Czechia. We now know more about their reasons for contract cheating and have insight into their thoughts regarding possible discovery. (shrink)

Dummett’s Manifestation Argument against realism attempts to show that a realist conception of meaning cannot explain the understanding of truth-conditions transcendent to evidence. In this work the general structure of the argument is discussed along with several objections to it. This examination finds that the anti-realist is committed to a deflationary conception of the normative character of meaning that is unpalatable. Corruption in higher education has raised concern among governments, citizens, and the education community worldwide. However, few papers have sought to explore the students’ willingness to engage in corrupt practices at the university level. The present study aimed to examine the influence of different corrupt behaviours and perceived corruption among peers on the corrupt intention of university students. 120 undergraduate students participated in a quasi-experimental design divided in 3 treatments to rate their willingness to engage in favouritism and embezzlement behaviours. (...) Results pointed out that students were more prone to committing a non-monetary behaviour favouritism– than a monetary behaviour –embezzlement–. Furthermore, there were not significant differences between the groups of control and high-corruption acceptance; while only the group of low-corruption acceptance showed significant lower rates when compared to the control and the high-corruption acceptance’s group. Practical recommendations need to address students’ perceptions of different corrupt practices, focusing on designing ethical training programmes aimed to raise awareness on the negative consequences of non-monetary activities. Future research directions could generate empirical support to prove if students are able to recognize the underlying mechanisms of subtle corrupt practices. (shrink)

[For an Ethics without Theology] This study is a critical reflection on Marek Vácha's article on the ethics of euthanasia. In the first part the author offers a short consideration of the reasons for the moribund state of ethics in Czech philosophy, after which, in the second part, he presents a critique of Vácha's article. The article in question is, above all, lacking in a philosophical approach to the problem of euthanasia, and we find in it not so much arguments (...) as rhetoric. The only line of argument that is detectable in the article is founded on natural theology, something that Vácha elsewhere repudiates, and it offers the reader a false dilemma between accepting theistic ethics on the one hand or total subjectivism on the other. In reality, of course, there is a wide range of kinds of objective secular ethics. In the third part, one of these forms is summarised--a system of "everyday morality" which is founded on the concept of harm, and which treats conduct as immoral primarily when it causes unjustifiable harm to others. This form of ethics does not presuppose any controversial theory of value, and it constitutes the viewpoint from which the author then defends physician-assisted suicide. A doctor who helps a patient die--or who causes the patient's death on his own request--does not cause that individual harm if she has only a period of life filled with pain left. In conclusion the author indentifies certain points of contact between secular and theistic ethics. (shrink)

El presente artículo propone un modelo de análisis para orientar el discernimiento y posicionamiento en torno al uso de la IA en educación superior. Analizaremos los cuatro posibles usos de la IA que más incidencia tendrán en esta si se considera el actual desarrollo de esta tecnología. Ellos son: la co-construcción de conocimiento, el uso de IA para tutoría o mentoreo, el auge de las plataformas adaptativas y la capacidad predictiva. Propondremos un ejercicio de análisis para cada uso apelando a (...) algunas de las dimensiones del modelo propuesto para orientar sobre su utilización. El resultado es fecundo, en tanto advierte sobre el riesgo de parcializar el análisis perdiendo de vista las implicancias y los compromisos más profundos que exige el discernimiento sobre el uso de la IA. This article analyses 1,073 e-mails that were hacked from the Climatic Research Unit at the University of East Anglia in November 2009. The incident was popularly dubbed 'Climategate', indicating that the e-mails reveal a scientific scandal. Here we analyse them differently. Rather than objecting to the exchanges based on some idea about proper scientific conduct, we see them as a rare glimpse into a situation where scientists collectively prepare for participation in heated controversy, with much focus on methodology. This allows (...) us to study how scientists communicate informally about framing propositions of facts in the best possible way. Through the eyes of science and technology studies, the e-mails provide an opportunity to study communication as part of science in the making across disciplines and laboratories. Analysed as 'written conversation' the e-mails provide information about processes of consensus formation through 'agonistic evaluations' of other scientists' work and persuasion of others to support one's own work. Also, the e-mails contain judgements about other groups and individual scientists. Consensus-forming appeared as a precarious activity. Controversies could be quite resilient in the course of this decade-long exchange, probably reflecting the complexity of the methodological challenges involved. (shrink)

In this work three recent proposal of analysis of the concept of ‘religion’ are discussed. There is a strong convergence between these three proposals in several points: all of them maintain that a religion should be the belief of something –a set of propositions, the object of a propositional attitude like a belief–, all of them maintain that the object of the belief should be a theory about the good, and all of them maintain that a religion should have important (...) normative and practical consequences. It is argued here that there are at least two problems with the general conception that results from these analyses. In the first place, attributing to a religion the conditions of identity of an act of belief leads to absurd consequences. In the second place, it seems much better to analyze a religion as a theory about God or some gods. (shrink)

Donald Davidson and John Searle famously differ, among other things, on the issue of animal thoughts. Davidson seems to be a latter-day Cartesian, denying any propositional thought to subhuman animals, while Searle seems to follow Hume in claiming that if we have thoughts, then animals do, too. Davidson’s argument centers on the idea that language is necessary for thought, which Searle rejects. The paper argues two things. Firstly, Searle eventually argues that much of a more complex thought does depend on (...) language, which reduces a distance between himself and Davidson. Secondly, some of Davidson’s suggestions are promising – in particular the idea that we may lack a vocabulary to capture the contents of animal thoughts. Based on this insight, one might, pace Davidson, grant thoughts to animals. However, this does not mean, pace Searle, that it should be possible to construe even the simplest of such thoughts as propositional. Perhaps we need to move beyond Davidson and Searle by developing a theory of nonpropositional thought for animals. (shrink)

Para ello subraya sus virtudes y sus defectos mediante el contraste con la propuesta de otro teórico político contemporáneo que también bebe de las fuentes kantianas del ideal cosmopolita: Jürgen Habermas. El autor concluye con una propuesta en la que la diversidad cultural y los ideales normativos cosmopolitas son integrados más allá de la completa aceptación de la facticidad y de la total abstracción (...) uníversalista insensible al contexto. In this article we investigate infinitary propositional logics from the perspective of their completeness properties in abstract algebraic logic. It is well-known that every finitary logic is complete with respect to its relatively subdirectly irreducible models. We identify two syntactical notions formulated in terms of intersection-prime theories that follow from finitarity and are sufficient conditions for the aforementioned completeness properties. We construct all the necessary counterexamples to show that all these properties define pairwise different classes of logics. [From an Evolutionary Point of View: The Concept of Evolution in Contemporary Philosophy].

Una de las características distintivas de la producción graciana tiene que ver con su impronta antropológico-filosófica. A lo largo de sus páginas se despliega una semántica y una serie de problematizaciones que constantemente invitan a pensar acerca de la naturaleza humana. Se trazan distinciones entre los habitantes del mundo y se plantean numerosas reflexiones acerca de cómo es que cada quién llega a ser lo que es. No obstante, es interesante observar que, pese a que Gracián exhibe un gran interés (...) por estos temas, pareciera que no se contempla el lugar del elemento religioso. Atendiendo a esto, resulta provechoso investigar cuáles son los motivos por los que esto sucede. Para ello, este trabajo revisa algunas cuestiones relativas a la biografía del autor, el medio en el que produce y lo que se estima que son algunos de los rasgos fundamentales de su producción. Se presenta una visión de la epistemología como lógica del pensar y se la lleva a una elaboración de la práctica clínica como una lógica del padecimiento psíquico. Esto basado en los planteamientos de Deleuze y Guattari. Para ello se toma como punto de partida la noción de los movimientos aberrantes que, leyendo la obra de Deleuze, elaboró David Lapoujade entendiéndolos como movimientos que se producen en la relación entre distintos términos heterogéneos, pero manteniendo su heterogeneidad. Esto es vinculado con (...) la invitación que hace el mismo Lapoujade a entender la obra deleuzeana como el desarrollo de lógicas irracionales, intentando pensar desde ahí una lógica de la locura y del padecimiento mental con base en, a su vez, una lógica de las obras literarias de Proust y Kafka, tal como las leen los mismos Deleuze y Guattari. En relación con ello destacamos, por un lado, cierta lógica de conjuntos abiertos y no totalizables que estos últimos autores encuentran en la obra de Proust y, por otro lado, una lógica de la contigüidad que encuentran en la obra de Kafka. Al mismo tiempo, se establecen puntos en común entre estas dos lecturas a propósito de lo esquizoide como algo que excede a la significación del discurso, así como a la normatividad de la conducta. Asimismo, en distintos puntos del escrito se extraerán las implicaciones que estos modos de pensar tienen para una práctica clínica en relación con modos de existencia subjetivos que se escapan a lo que está establecido en el campo social. De esa manera, ponemos en conjunción una aproximación epistemológica con una política. (shrink)

We provide a brief overview of the shift toward the intrinsic view of brain activity, describing in particular the structural and functional connectivity patterns of the “Default mode network”. We then consider the Default mode network in a specifically cognitive setting and ask what changes the focus on the Default mode network and other sorts of intrinsic activity require from models put forward by cognitive neuroscientists.

Ciertas ideas erróneas que solemos asociar con el fenómeno de la libertad son aquí objeto de una crítica que se propone mostrar en qué consiste realmente la libertad de los seres humanos.

Although research to date has helped in important ways to shed light on the penetration of Burke’s Enquiry into the German-language area, a comprehensive treatment of this reception as a process distinguished not only by changes over time, but also characterized by regional variations, remains lacking. Based on the lectures on aesthetics by August Gottlieb Meißner at Prague University in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, the paper seeks to illuminate this underexposed regional aspect. The first phase of the (...) reception of the Enquiry took place especially in Berlin immediately after its publication in London in 1757. The second phase can be located mainly in the northern maritime centres of German culture, particularly Königsberg, Riga, Hamburg as well as Copenhagen. Christian Garve’s translation, published anonymously by Hartknoch in Riga in 1773, and Kant’s Critique of Judgement constitute two peaks of north-German interest in Burke’s Enquiry. The intense reception of the Critique of Judgement within German aesthetics around and after 1800 subsequently led to the polemic with the British author becoming a part of Idealist interpretations for the next few decades. Outlining the three centres of the German reception of Burke’s Enquiry begs the question which of them should be connected with Meißner’s remarks concerning Burke’s ideas. Leipzig is presented as another important German-language centre disseminating knowledge of Burke’s Enquiry, especially in the first half of the Seventies, moreover the decisive intermediary for the penetration of the Enquiry into the south-German Roman Catholic areas, Prague in particular. In dem Artikel werden die Schlüsselwörter der Globalisierung – Bios, Technē und Logos – etymologisch ergründet, und überdies im Kontext der existenziellen Phänomenologie interpretiert. Zu diesem Zweck beruft man sich nicht nur auf Heidegger, den Beweger existenzieller Interpretation antiker Begriffe, sondern auch auf Husserl, Gadamer, Lévinas und Bakhtin. Vorgestellt wurden drei Thesen: 1) Unser Körper ist von der geistigen Umwelt untrennbar, wo er heranreift, indem er geistige Funktionen erlangt, das heißt durch Beseelung, Benennung und Verwirklichung. 2) Die geistige Umwelt ist (...) gleichlaufend eine technologische Umwelt, wo die Technē als Kunst der Erschaffung interaktiver Umweltkomponente wie Körper oder Geist auszulegen ist. 3) Der Logos als Wort und Name supponiert den Text bzw. das Buch aus der Feder unseres Lebens, sowie den Kontext, d. h. die Interaktion der Texte als Lebensgeschichten. Es wird behauptet, Bios, Technē und Logos seien analog zu interpretieren, d. h. als interaktive Komponenten existenzieller Schöpfung, die differente Verbindungsebenen zwischen der geistigen Umwelt und der darin verlaufenden Lebensgeschichte einbeziehen. Der Bios steht im Zusammenhalt mit dem körperlichen Aspekt existenzieller Schöpfung: Unser Leben ist von Geburt an bis zum Tod untrennbar von der Eingeschlossenheit der Phänomene in die körperliche, zeitliche sowie räumliche Ganzheit, die wiederum in die geistige Umwelt eingegliedert ist. Der Logos reflektiert die lingvistisch-skriptuale Natur des geistigen Umweltkontextes. Die Technē wird gleichzeitig als ein Schöpfungsakt des existenziellen Ganzen interpretiert, sowie als ein Akt seines Einschreibens in den erwähnten Kontext. Daraus resultierend werden Bios, Technē und Logos alternativ zum Globalisierungsdiskurs interpretiert. (shrink)

This paper conducts an etymological investigation of the key words of globalization – bios, technē and logos. In addition to this, these keyword concepts are interpreted in the context of existential phenomenology. For this purpose not only Heidegger, who is a proponent of the existential interpretation of ancient concepts, but also Husserl, Gadamer, Lévinas, and Bakhtin are invoked. There are three theses presented in the paper: 1) our body is inseparable from the spiritual environment, where it matures by gaining the (...) spiritual functions of being spiritualized, named and realised; 2) the spiritual environment is at the same time technological, where technē is to be interpreted as an art of creation of environment’s interactive component such as the body and the spirit; 3) logos as the word and the name presupposes a text, i.e. a book written by our lives and the context, i.e. the interaction of texts as life-stories. The argument is given for the analogous interpretation of bios, technē and logos, i.e. that the three should be interpreted as interactive components of existential creation, which involve different planes of relationships between the spiritual environment and the life-story developing in it. Bios is related to the corporal aspect of existential creation: our life from birth to death is inseparable from the corporal temporal-spatial whole, which is involved in the spiritual environment. Logos reflects the linguistic-scriptural nature of the spiritual context of the environment. Technē is interpreted both as an art of creation of the existential whole and as an art of its inscription into this context. As a result, bios, technē and logos are interpreted in a way alternative to the discourse of globalization. (shrink)

L’article examine l’étymologie des mots-clés de la globalisation : bios, technē et logos, puis les interprète dans le contexte de la phénoménologie existentielle. À cet effet, il ne s’appuie pas que sur Heidegger, qui a initié l’interprétation existentielle des termes antiques, mais aussi sur Husserl, Gadamer, Lévinas et Bakhtine. Trois propositions sont examinées : 1) notre corps est inséparable de l’environnement spirituel où il mûrit en acquérant des fonctions spirituelles, c’est-à-dire en se spiritualisant, en se nommant et en se réalisant (...) ; 2) l’environnement spirituel est en même temps technologique, où technē doit être interprétée comme l’art de la création de la composante interactive de l’environnement telle que le corps et l’esprit ; 3) logos comme mot et nom suppose un texte, c’est-à-dire un livre écrit par notre vie, ainsi qu’un contexte, c’est-àdire l’interaction des textes en tant qu’histoires de vie. Il est affirmé que bios, technē et logos doivent être interprétés de façon analogue, c’est-à-dire comme des composantes interactives de la création existentielle qui comportent différents niveaux de liens entre l’environnement spirituel et l’histoire de vie qui s’y déroule. Bios est lié à l’aspect corporel de la création existentielle : notre vie, de la naissance à la mort, est inséparable de l’implication des phénomènes dans l’unité temporelle et spatiale comprise dans l’environnement spirituel. Le logos reflète la nature linguistico-scripturalle du contexte spirituel de l’environnement. Technē est interprétée à la fois comme acte de création de l’unité existentielle et comme acte de son inscription dans ce contexte. En conséquence, bios, technē et logos sont interprétés de manière alternative par rapport au discours de la globalisation. (shrink)

The article deals with the conception of backward causation, i.e. with the question whether an effect can precede its cause. It analyses some arguments for possibility of backward causation. It is especially Dummett’s theory of quasi-causation that is a moderate form of backward causation concept. The article refuses the arguments for possibility of backward causation as unconvincing of false.

The intention of this paper is at least partly to reveal the background and the sources that inspired or could have inspired the Empedoclean conception of Sphairos. These sources have mostly been sought in the philosophical constructions of other pre-Socratics but the present paper aims to show that there are very interesting and sometimes also very narrow parallels and analogies in mythology. On the one hand, in the stories of the primordial man who is sacrificed in the world and whose (...) torn limbs created parts or elements of our world , and on the other hand, in the myth of the periodical death and ressurection of Adonis. While the inspiration with the destiny of Aphrodite’s lover Adonis seems be highly probable, whether Empedocles knew and utilized the myth of dismemberment of the primordial man remains unclear. The idea of Sphairos, in every case, was formed by dint of both genres or ways of thinking − philosophical as well as mythological ones − that both permeated all his verses. (shrink)
