L’univers de Kafka présente, selon Hannah Arendt, un conflit entre un monde où les hommes obéissent aveuglément à des règles leur paraissant inéluctables et un héros qui s’engage sur une voie divergente. Dans une société dont les lois semblent s’imposer à tous comme si elles provenaient d’une Puissance divine, l’objectif de K. consiste « simplement » à tenter d’obtenir le minimum requis pour l’existence humaine, sans accepter que la satisfaction de cette ambition ne prenne la forme d’un don ou d’un (...) privilège. Sa requête représente, aux yeux d’Arendt, la « bonne volonté ». Elle dévoile le caractère implacable des engrenages qui absorbent les vies humaines, met en évidence les structures cachées de l’organisation sociale et les impasses de l’assimilation. Arendt analyse le sens de cette « bonne volonté » dans un monde régi par des règles iniques et arbitraires, en examinant la marge de manœuvre d’un homme isolé en quête de droits proprement humains. Cet article rend compte des modes d'utilisation et d'accès aux TIC au Japon, sous l'angle des controverses et des défis qui se présentent aux différentes générations. Pour les parents, il s'agit d'assurer un environnement informatique sans risque tout en aidant leurs enfants à découvrir des informations en ligne et à en tirer le meilleur parti. Quant aux adultes en général, les inégalités existantes déterminent la nature et les modes d'utilisation des TIC. En conclusion, l'article suggère qu'Internet présente non pas un (...) moyen d'expression transparent à une société civile pré-existante, mais soulève au contraire des problématiques classiques dans la société civile japonaise, ayant trait par exemple à l'égalité, à l'intégration et à la participation aux délibérations civiques.This article reports on usage patterns and access to ICTs in Japan, in terms of controversies and challenges that arise between generations. For parents, it is to ensure a safe computing environment while helping their children discover information online and get the best. For adults in general, existing inequalities determine the nature and patterns of use of ICT. In conclusion, the article suggests that the Internet has not a transparent medium of a pre-existing civil society, but instead raises issues in traditional Japanese civil society, for example in relation to equality, integration and civic participation in the deliberations. Au cours des dernières décennies, d'importants philosophes tels Walter B. Gallie, Arthur Danto, Louis Mink, Hayden White et Paul Ricoeur ont mis l'accent sur le rôle de la narration en histoire. Le présent texte rappelle les thèses de ces auteurs et porte ensuite une attention particulière aux travaux de David Carr voulant que l'action historique elle-même ait une structure narrative. L'article discute des conséquences de ce « narrativisme » en prenant parti dans un débat alimenté par des interventions comme celles (...) de William Dray et de Noël Carroll. Il soutient qu'une thèse «réaliste» en la matière risque de déboucher sur la réactualisation d'une forme de philosophie spéculative de l'histoire, ce qui ne va pas sans soulever quelques questions à propos de l'analyse politique et de la pratique de l'histoire. Shiny es una aplicación para el software R que permite la creación de interfaces para usuarios sin conocimiento de programación. En este trabajo utilizamos em método de mapeo sistemático para la recopilación, análisis y extracción de información en publicaciones que indican el uso de Shiny para explicar conceptos estadísticos. Dentro de las conclusiones se tiene que Shiny es utilizado como herramienta para la realización de experiencias académicas, además como medio para la solución de problemas en las áreas de educación y (...) ciencias naturales y de la vida abordando tópicos de estadística relacionados con estadística pre-inferencial e inferencial, entre otros. Se analizan las creencias y mitos de 30 jóvenes sobre los sentimientos de una mujer víctima de violencia de género. Se emplean como materiales los anuncios de una campaña gubernamental. Los resultados dibujan una víctima principalmente avergonzada o culpable; en segundo lugar triste e impotente, y en tercer lugar valiente y motivada. Además, sólo un 40% considera que los anuncios ayudan a la mujer. Se detecta una importante pervivencia del mito que responsabiliza a la víctima por ser incapaz de cambiar (...) su situación. Sin embargo, también se detecta un cuestionamiento de dicho mito, y una evolución hacia creencias menos distorsionadas. (shrink)

The influence of emotion on episodic and autobiographical memory in schizophrenia was investigated. Using an experiential approach, the states of awareness accompanying recollection of pictures from the IAPS and of associated autobiographical memories was recorded. Results show that schizophrenia impairs episodic and autobiographical memories in their critical feature: autonoetic awareness, i.e., the type of awareness experienced when mentally reliving events from one’s past. Schizophrenia was also associated with a reduction of specific autobiographical memories. The impact of stimulus valence on memory (...) performance was moderated by clinical status. Patients with schizophrenia recognized more positive than negative pictures, and recalled more positive than negative autobiographical memories while controls displayed the opposite pattern. A hypothesis in terms of a fundamental executive deficit underlying these impairments is proposed. (shrink)

Exploring the metaphysics of deep disagreements, Ranalli identifies several essential features shared by all such disputes. These very features constitute a set of adequacy conditions that any satisfactory theory of deep disagreements must meet. The paper explains how Coliva’s Wittgensteinian hinge theory can satisfy Ranalli’s persistence desideratum. According to this condition, any appropriate theory must explain why deep disagreements tend to be persistent and thus unresolved without presupposing that they are rationally irresolvable. First, the work critically discusses how Coliva utilizes (...) her proposed view to account for this desideratum. Second, the paper points out that Coliva’s response is partly problematic because of Ranalli’s definition of deep disagreements for Wittgensteinian hinge theories, which over-generates instances of genuine deep disagreements. Third, the work argues that Coliva’s theory can satisfy Ranalli’s persistence desideratum by resolving a deep disagreement between an anti-vaccination advocate and a proponent of vaccination using an expanded version of Pritchard’s side-on approach. Finally, the paper critically engages with Coliva on the solvability of deep disagreements. (shrink)

La propuesta en cuestión supone acudir al modo en que Darwin lidió con las concepciones teleológicas dominantes entre sus contemporáneos, para proponer una estrategia general a través de la cual se podría incidir sobre las intuiciones teleológicas de los estudiantes, de modo que se pueda facilitar el aprendizaje de la teoría de la (...) selección natural. Sugeriremos también que esta propuesta implica un modo original de apelar a la analogía entre el cambio teórico en la Historia de la Ciencia y el aprendizaje de las ciencias. (shrink)

First published in Italian in 2008 and appearing here in English for the first time, Janus's Gaze is the culmination of Carlo Galli's ongoing critique of the work of Carl Schmitt. Galli argues that Schmitt's main accomplishment, as well as the thread that unifies his oeuvre, is his construction of a genealogy of the modern that explains how modernity's compulsory drive to achieve order is both necessary and impossible. Galli addresses five key problems in Schmitt's thought: his (...) relation to the state, the significance of his concept of political theology, his readings of Machiavelli and Spinoza, his relation to Leo Strauss, and his relevance for contemporary political theory. Galli emphasizes the importance of passing through Schmitt’s thought—and, more important, beyond Schmitt’s thought—if we are to achieve insight into the problems of the global age. En s’intéressant aux rythmes et aux temporalités associés à l’utilisation des espaces de coworking, cet article a vocation à rendre compte de la manière dont les coworkers, en majorité indépendants et télétravailleurs salariés à distance, utilisent l’espace pour concilier vie personnelle et vie professionnelle, contraintes professionnelles et aspirations à un mode de vie. Nous montrons que la présence dans les espaces de coworking est fréquemment associée à des transitions et des bifurcations aussi bien professionnelles que résidentielles, mettant en évidence des (...) rationalités qui relèvent du projet de vie. Confrontées à de nouvelles contraintes temporelles et spatiales générées par le statut de télétravailleur ou d’indépendant, ces personnes trouvent dans le coworking une manière de borner spatialement le travail. En offrant un lieu dédié à l’activité professionnelle, en instaurant des rythmes collectifs et en libérant l’espace domestique du travail, les espaces de coworking peuvent alors servir d’outils de régulation des temporalités. Cependant, alors que la littérature sur le coworking a beaucoup insisté sur sa dimension flexible et agile, notre étude met en évidence la permanence de l’importance des cadres spatiaux et sociaux de l’activité dans l’articulation entre rythmes individuels et sociaux. Comment cette science supprimée, violemment critiquée puis réhabilitée par le régime communiste se reconstruit-elle ? L’article présente le processus de reconstitution de la discipline, en mettant en lumière les formes d’engagement des différentes générations de chercheurs, les ressources qu’ils mobilisent ainsi que les débats (...) qu’ils soulèvent. Il analyse ensuite les productions sociologiques et leurs évolutions à partir de deux perspectives,les transformations de la société chinoise et la question de la modernisation.After being banned for thirty years, sociology has been allowed again in China in the early 80s, and its development to date provides a critical case for the study of the political, social and intellectual conditions essential for the existence of the discipline. How did this science, which was discarded, violently criticized and then rehabilitated by the communist regime manage to reconstruct ? The article first describes the discipline’s reconstitution process, focusing on the commitment patterns of different generations of sociologists, on the resources they mobilize, as well as on the debates they raise. The contradictions between food poverty affecting a large section of the global population and the everyday wastage of food, particularly in high income countries, have raised significant academic and public attention. All actors in the food chain have a role to play in food waste prevention and reduction, including farmers, food manufacturers and processors, caterers and retailers and ultimately consumers. Food surplus redistribution is considered by many as a partial solution to food waste reduction and food poverty mitigation, while others (...) criticize charitable initiatives as inadequate responses, that inhibit governments from responsibly protecting the citizens right to food. This paper frames food assistance as “hybrid systems”, situating at the intersection of territorial food, public welfare and third sector voluntary systems. Based on available literature and reflections on previous research examining food banks in Italy, we develop a system dynamics conceptual mapping. The aim is to model a set of relations and dynamic mechanisms associated with variables relevant to food waste generation, food recovery for social purposes and food poverty alleviation. The analysis of feedback interactions highlights the vulnerabilities of food assistance systems that occur when addressing food poverty by reducing food surplus. In summary, as the awareness on food poverty and food surplus arises, incentives to food recovery and redistribution strengthen the role of food assistance actors, increasing their exposure to drivers of change, such as retailers’ standards for food surplus prevention. This paper contributes to the current academic debate on charitable food assistance, with insights for policy makers and other systems’ actors. (shrink)

Background: The role of personality in cancer incidence and development has been studied for a long time. As colorectal cancer is one of the most prevalent cancer types and linked with lifestyle habits, it is important to better understand its psychological correlates, in order to design a more specific prevention and intervention plan. The aim of this systematic review is to analyze all the studies investigating the role of personality in CRC incidence.Methods: All studies on CRC and personality up to (...) November 2020 were scrutinized according to the Cochrane Collaboration and the PRISMA statements. Selected studies were additionally evaluated for the Risk of Bias according to the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale.Results: Eight studies met the inclusion criteria and were eventually included in this review. Two main constructs have been identified as potential contributors of CRC incidence: emotional regulation and relational style.Conclusion: Strong conclusions regarding the influence of personality traits on the incidence of CRC are not possible, because of the small number and the heterogeneity of the selected studies. Further research is needed to understand the complexity of personality and its role in the incidence of CRC and the interaction with other valuable risk factors. (shrink)

This article analyses the inner structure of the argumentum orationis pro Milone in order to evaluate how Asconius arranges his narration of events. The analysis focuses on how the various sections unwind, on the use of connectives and temporal indicators, as well as on the use of tenses, and argues that the argumentum proceeds according to the chronological succession of events in its general outlines, within which minor events are inserted by association of ideas regardless of the chronological order. A (...) most striking example is provided by the episodes narrated at 36. 18-38. 13, which form a long digression on the topic of metus Milonis and, subsequently, of constantia Ciceronis. (shrink)

Recently, José María Ariso and Samuel Laves have critically debated whether killing innocent and non‐threatening people [=WK] is a universal moral certainty. One of the main topics of their discussion concerns the case of the pisa‐suaves, children born in the context of the Colombian civil war who grew up with the FARC guerrillas. While Laves argues that such children hold WK, Ariso rejects his claim and stresses that pisa‐suaves have no moral code of conduct. In my work, I side with (...) Laves and contend that WK is a universal moral certainty. Accordingly, I maintain that (i) either pisa‐suaves possess WK and thereby count as human moral agents, or (ii) if they do not possess any moral code of conduct, then they cannot count as human moral agents and, in turn, their existence does not undermine WK's universality. Objective. Tako-Tsubo syndrome (TTS) is historically related to the occurrence of psychological (emotional) factors (“broken heart” syndrome). Our aim was conducting a systematic review analyzing the role of psychological factors in TTS. Methods: All studies on TTS and psychological factors from 1991 to April 2019 were scrutinized according to the Cochrane Collaboration and the PRISMA statement. Selected studies were additionally evaluated for the Risk of Bias according to the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS). Results. Fifteen case-control studies (Mayo Clinic criteria) were finally (...) selected. Most studies analysed the role of stressful life-events or trauma, although with conflicting findings, while a likely role for long-lasting psychological distress seems to be a homogenous result. Among life-time psychopathology, only anxiety seems to have a significant role. Some studies outlined a likely role for personality, but findings are conflicting. Conclusion. A role for psychological factors in TTS requires more studies with stronger research methodology than the existing ones. (shrink)

Is The Prelude a philosophical poem? It is, of course, many things besides: it is an autobiography; it contains profound reflections on psychology, education and politics; and there are passages of an almost purely lyrical character. Does it also contain philosophical poetry? On this question, the critics of Wordsworth are divided. Coleridge and Raleigh answer Yes; Arnold, Bradley, Dr. Leaves, from their different points of view, agree in answering No. I believe that the first answer is right, although it has (...) usually been supported by the wrong reasons. I believe the second answer to be wrong, although many of the arguments that are supposed to lead to it are in themselves sound enough. Those who say that The Prelude is not a philosophical poem, usually mean that it does not offer a coherent system of philosophy—that it expresses an original outlook and a personal wisdom, but that the only systematic philosophy in it comes at second-hand from Hartley or Coleridge and contributes not at all to the poem. And this is largely true. But the mistake is, to identify philosophy with system, philosophizing with “a philosophy.” This is a mistake that has been repudiated again and again by many of the greatest philosophers, from Socrates and Plato to Locke and Kant and others. I shall argue that The Prelude achieves philosophical poetry, because in it Wordsworth grapples with philosophical problems—problems which arise out of the story of his own early life—which are actually forced upon him by the poem itself; and because he tries to answer these problems in a way which would be possible only in poetry. Professor Gallic argues that they made contributions to 'international theory' - to the understanding of the character and causes of war and of the possibility of peace between nations - which were of unrivalled originality in their own times and remain of undiminished importance in ours. But these contributions have been either ignored or much misunderstood ; chiefly because, as with all intellectual efforts in unexplored (...) fields, they were often imperfectly expressed, and were also overshadowed by their author's more striking achievements.
