  3. The Psychological Approach to Personal Identity: Non-Branching and the Individuation of Person Stages.Anthony Brueckner - 2008 - Dialogue 47 (2):377-386.
We begin by discussing some logical constraints on the psychological approach to personal identity. We consider a problem for the psychological approach that arises in fission cases. The problem engenders the need for a non-branching clause in a psychological account of the co-personality relation. We look at some difficulties in formulating such a clause. We end by rejecting a recently proposed formulation of non-branching. Our criticism of the formulation raises some interesting questions about the individuation (...)

  8. A Psychological Approach to Causal Understanding and the Temporal Asymmetry.Elena Popa - 2020 - Review of Philosophy and Psychology 11 (4):977-994.
This article provides a conceptual account of causal understanding by connecting current psychological research on time and causality with philosophical debates on the causal asymmetry. I argue that causal relations are viewed as asymmetric because they are understood in temporal terms. I investigate evidence from causal learning and reasoning in both children and adults: causal perception, the temporal priority principle, and the use of temporal cues for causal inference. While this account does not suffice for correct inferences of causal (...)

  9. Endurantism and the psychological approach to personal identity.Anthony Brueckner - 2009 - Theoria 75 (1):28-33.
This paper considers the question whether a psychological approach to personal identity can be formulated within an endurantist, as opposed to four-dimensionalist, framework. Trenton Merricks has argued that this cannot be done. I argue to the contrary: a perfectly coherent endurantist version of the psychological approach can indeed be formulated.

The pre-eminent 19th century British ethicist, Henry Sidgwick once said: "All important ethical notions are also psychological, except perhaps the fundamental antitheses of 'good' and 'bad' and 'wrong', with which psychology, as it treats of what is and not of what ought to be, is not directly concerned" (quoted in T.N. Tice and T.P. Slavens, 1983). Sidgwick's statement can be interpreted to mean that psychology is relevant for ethics or that psychological knowledge contributes to the construction of an (...)

A pastoral psychological approach to domestic violence in South Africa.Petronella J. Davies & Yolanda Dreyer - 2014 - HTS Theological Studies 70 (3):01-08.
South Africa suffers a scourge of domestic violence. Colonial oppression upset the delicate balance between 'discipline' and 'protection' in traditional cultures. The full consequence of a patriarchal mindset of male control is unleashed on girls and women. The aim of this article is to investigate how the cycle of domestic violence can be broken and what role pastoral counsellors can play with regard to both victims and offenders in order to prevent history from repeating itself. The article also investigates the (...)

Advantages of a psychological approach to personal identity with respect to moral responsibility question.А. В Мерцалов - 2023 - Philosophy Journal 16 (1):177-192.
The article defends the thesis that in the context of moral responsibility (MR) as it is understood in modern Strawsonian theories of MR, psychological approach has significant advantages in comparison with competing approaches to personal identity problem: biological approach, substantialism and narrative view. In the Strawsonian theories, two generally accepted necessary conditions of the appropriateness of holding someone responsible are the conditions of moral agency and agency of action. The article shows that for these conditions to be (...)

  24. Fetuses, corpses and the psychological approach to personal identity.Robert Francescotti - 2005 - Philosophical Explorations 8 (1):69-81.
Olson (1997a) tries to refute the Psychological Approach to personal identity with his Fetus Argument, and Mackie (1999) aims to do the same with the Death Argument. With the help of a suggestion made by Baker (1999), the following discussion shows that these arguments fail. In the process of defending the Psychological Approach, it is made clear exactly what one is and is not committed to as a proponent of the theory.

Situational and Psychological Approach to the Personal Security of Endangered Judges, Prosecutors, and Investigators.Svetoslav Hadzhiyski - 2022 - Diogenes 30 (1):154-158.
This article focuses on the situational and psychological approach that can enhance the effectiveness of the protection of endangered judges, prosecutors, and investigators. The idea was raised that risk assessment and the implementation of security would be more effective if the situation is viewed in a different way from the ordinary approach. The phenomenological view allows for a larger interpretation, which includes personal and external factors.

An Exploratory Phenomenological Psychological Approach to the Experience of the Moral Sense.Amedeo Giorgi - 1992 - Journal of Phenomenological Psychology 23 (1):50-86.
The study of the moral sense was neglected for a long time in psychology until recently when Kohlberg, following the work of Piaget, constructed a scale for studying moral judgments. In this article the more scientific and empirical approach to the moral sense is questioned and an argument is made that a qualitative approach would yield more meaningful results. The work of Coles is cited as one example of a qualitative approach, and this article suggests a phenomenological (...)

Learning to Care: A Psychological Approach to Nursing and Healthcare.Helena Priest - 2011 - Routledge.
Caring is at the core of what nurses and other health professionals do. But caring encompasses more than simply looking after people's physical health needs. People requiring any health service will have psychological needs that affect their feelings, thoughts, and behaviour. Good psychological care can even help improve physical health outcomes. An Introduction to Psychological Care in Nursing and the Health Professions explains and promotes the importance of psychological care for people when they become physically ill, (...)

  30. Will sexual robots modify human relationships? A psychological approach to reframe the symbolic argument.Piercosma Bisconti - 2021 - Advanced Robotics 35 (9):561-571.
The purpose of this paper is to understand if and how interactions with Sexual Robots will modify users’ relational abilities in human-human relations. We first underline that, in today’s scholar discussion on the ‘symbolic argument’, there is no theoretical framework explaining the process of symbolic shift between human-robot interactions (HRI) and human-human interactions (HHI). To clarify the symbolic shift mechanism, we propose the concept of objectual mediation. Moreover, under the lens of Winnicott’s object-relation theory, we argue that HRI can structurally (...)

The main purpose of this article is to undertake a conceptual investigation of the Berlin Wisdom Paradigm: a psychological project initiated by Paul Baltes and intended to study the complex phenomenon of wisdom. Firstly, in order to provide a wider perspective for the subsequent analyses, a short historical sketch is given. Secondly, a meta-theoretical issue of the degree to which the subject matter of the Baltesian study can be identified with the traditional philosophical wisdom is addressed. The main result (...)

The Transcendental Psychology Approach to the study of perception has been developed by A.I. Mirakyan at the Psychological Institute (Moscow, Russia) about 30 years ago. This article considers the results of theoretical and experimental investigations and provides a historical overview of the approach’s development. Started with the investigations of constancy in perception, it went beyond the traditional Product Basis Paradigm (relying on perceptual features for finding perceptual mechanisms) into Philosophical Metaphysics of “nothing” and “something” concepts for revealing (...)
