The aim of this paper is to present the modes of action of venom as construed by Abū 'Uthmān 'Amr ibn Ba[hdotu]r al-Jā[hdotu]i[zdotu] in his Kitāb al-[Hdotu]ayawān. The toxicological information presented by Jā[hdotu]i[zdotu] is a synthesis of data available in his time, but Jā[hdotu]i[zdotu] complemented these early conceptions by his personal theoretical views. Jā[hdotu]i[zdotu]'s fundamental idea is that venoms act through their specific natures; this idea in a way is reminiscent of present-day theory of enzymes.

Cet article a pour but de faire connaître au lecture une approche théorique de la réalité physique différente de celle communément admise depuis les débuts de la science physique. On y montre d'abord comment l'approche traditionnelle traite avec une notion de l'événement physique et des étres physiques en ǵenéral qui laisse systématiquement de côté ces éléments de complexité considérés trop facilement comme superflus, mais qui appartiennent à la réalité physique et en constituent la trame. On proposera alors une nouvelle approche (...) qui s'avérera complémentaire de l'approche traditionnelle, en mettant en jeu la notion d'événement singulier, caractérisé par son unicité dans l'espace-temps tout comme un fait historique muni de toute sa richesse factuelle qui est la base de son individualité. RésuméLe but de cet article est de présenter un rapport d'origine arabe médiévale concernant six animaux du Golfe d'Aden, de fournir une identification zoologique des cinq parmi ces animaux qui peuvent être identifiés, et d'analyser les informations biologiques fournies par ce rapport à la lumière des connaissances zoologiques à la fois contemporaines au rapport et modernes, afin d'évaluer ainsi le niveau scientifique de celui-ci.

Un survol historique des principales conceptions du fatalisme dans l’histoire sert ici de fil conducteur pour envisager le dépassement possible d’une conception fataliste qui caractériserait la pensée moderne dans son ensemble, et par conséquent le dépassement de la notion de liberté qu’on peut lui associer. Ce fatalisme moderne est celui que l’on peut attacher à la conception moderne de l’histoire, ce mot - histoire - étant entendu non comme la suite accidentelle des faits par opposition à une raison objective, mais (...) comme l’horizon même, explicite ou implicite, de l’ensemble de la conceptualisation rationnelle moderne. Il s’agit donc, ici, de considérer la possibilité d’un dépassement de cet horizon généralement tenu pour ultime et du type de fatalisme qui lui correspond.A historical survey of the main conceptions of fatalism is made. This serve us as a guide in order to conceive a mean for going beyond a conception of fatalism which seems to be typical of modern thought as a whole. Accordingly this can permit us to go beyond an idea of liberty which is linked to it. We can attach this modern fatalism to the modern conception of history, where we understand this word - history - not as an accidental succession of facts as opposed to an objective reason, but as the explicit or implicit horizon itself of the modern rational conceptualisation as a whole. Therefore we are concerned here about the possibility to go beyond this horizon which is generally considered as ultimate, and beyond the kind of fatalism which corresponds to it. (shrink)

In light of its history of interpretation, an interpretive essay on the fifth book of Plato's Republic is advanced, on the premise that existing views of the relation of Book V to the rest of the dialogue are inadequate. The metaphor of the "three waves" indicates more than a mere formal unity to the argument of Book V, since the logic of the first two "waves" only becomes evident in light of their dependence upon the logic of the third "wave" (...) . The "three waves" constitute a single, unified argument, which discloses the dependence of justice, as defined in terms of the state and individual in Book IV, upon the idea of the good set forth in Book VI. The ?language of the gods? is conceived as a kind of language more complex than what we associate with human tongues in the strict sense of the term. Certain arbitrary regularities throughout the rational disciplines appear to indicate the existence of this language. The present article explores this new concept and applies it in an attempt to provide a logical clarification of the notions of individual consciousness and physical reality.

La notion d'objectivité fait l'objet d'une étude qui s'inscrit dans une visée globale, ce qui doit s'entendre dans le sens d'une globalité des savoirs rationnels, auxquels on tente ici d'assigner des ordres d'objectivité, et dans le sens d'une globalité historique, où il est envisagé de faire correspondre ces ordres d'objectivité à quelques grandes époques de l'histoire de la pensée rationnelle depuis l'Antiquité. On se penchera notamment sur la signification profonde des rapports intersubjectifs dans les constitutions objectives. Une clarification de la (...) signification de l'induction dans les sciences expérimentales pourra en résulter.We examine the notion of objectivity in a global aim, i.e. along the line of the main types of rational knowledges and along the line of the history since the Antiquity. We develop the idea of many orders of objectivity each of which corresponding to types of knowledge and to great periods in the history of rational thinking. In particular we attempt to consider the deep significance of intersubjectivity in relation to objectivity. As a result the significance of the induction in the experimental sciences should become clearer. (shrink)

Simone Martini’s panel painting of St Ladislas of Hungary, founder of the Árpád dynasty and a prototypical crusading knight, attests to the transnational character of Filippo Sangineto’s patronage in Santa Maria della Consolazione, Altomonte (Calabria). The attribution to Sangineto, count of Altomonte and seneschal of Provence, has long been debated, but he is agreed to have been a formidable patron with an ambitious plan for Altomonte. Like many Italian royals, aristocrats, cardinals, and merchants, Filippo commissioned artworks to Sienese artists (...) in Avignon. This study’s approach also sheds light on the iconography as the choice of Ladislas can be connected to the Crusade of Smyrna (1343-1345). The article proposes a reconstruction of Santa Maria della Consolazione, with two small, matching polyptychs set against the screen, one by Bernardo Daddi (two wings survive in Altomonte) and the other by Simone, composed of the painting of Ladislas and the Phillips Collection’s Christ on the Cross. Le roi et la reine de France font compte à part : si la séparation du roi et de la reine comme mode habituel de vie de couple princier est bien actée à la fin du Moyen Âge, qu’en était-il au xiiie siècle, c’est-à-dire au moment de l’émergence de l’hôtel réginal? Si la question des institutions et de l’entourage royaux a fait l’objet d’une attention renouvelée ces dernières années elle n’a pas vraiment concerné l’hôtel de la reine. Pourtant la naissance (...) de cet hôtel dans le royaume de France est peut-être à replacer dans un contexte bien plus politique que les historiens ne le laissaient à penser. En effet, l’étude de la personnalité de Marguerite de Provence (1221‑1295) mérite de soulever d’intéressants questionnements en lien avec cette thématique. Il s’agit également d’élaborer une réflexion sur la chronologie de l’apparition institutionnelle de l’hôtel réginal, indépendamment de celui du roi, et de montrer que Marguerite de Provence est probablement la première reine en Occident à en posséder un. Au cours de la période moderne, les fonds provençaux du « for privé » (livres de raison, journaux, mémoires), sont marqués par une faiblesse quantitative des écrits féminins. Pour l’essentiel, ceux-ci relaient l’écriture d’un mari, parfois d’un père ou d’un frère absents ou disparus, dans la tenue des comptes et dans l’enregistrement de la mémoire familiale. Néanmoins, chez la trentaine de femmes retrouvées ici au fil des archives, l’écriture quotidienne, quand bien même elle répond à l’application d’une norme et à (...) l’assignation d’un rôle social, n’en fournit pas moins la possibilité d’une construction de soi, depuis la conquête de sa matérialité graphique la plus élémentaire jusqu’à l’émergence d’une réflexivité individuelle née de la familiarité croissante du commerce avec soi et de l’essor d’une expression personnelle. On devra néanmoins se demander si cette posture suffit, au creux de registres familiaux dont la vocation est d’abord collective, à construire un individu féminin. (shrink)

Surnames were obtained for the second half of the 20th century from civil and religious marriage registers on fifteen Provençal-Italian and five Italian villages of Cuneo Province, Italy. To insert in the analysis an outward comparison, surnames from two Italian villages of Turin Province, one parish of Turin, one village of Alessandria Province and one village of Asti Province were also collected. Ethnicity does not seem to be the main factor affecting the present genetic structure of the Provençal-Italians. The studies comprising this volume, most of them appearing for the first time in English, deal with some of the main topics in Maimonides? philosophy and that of his followers in Provence. At the heart of these topics lies the issue of whether they adopted a completely naturalistic picture of the workings of the world order, or left room for the volitional activity of God in history. These topics include divine law, creation, the Account of the Chariot, prophet and (...) sage, Mosaic prophecy, reasons for the commandments, and prayer. This book comprises revised full versions of lectures given during the 9th European Summer School in Logic, Languages, and Information, ESSLLI'97, held in Aix-en-Provence, France, in August 1997. The six lectures presented introduce the reader to the state of the art in the area of generalized quantifiers and computation. Besides an introductory survey by the volume editor various aspects of generalized quantifiers are studied in depth.

The purpose of this article is first to enrich the exposition on the contribution of the magistri artium in Claude Panaccio’s Le Discours intérieur by an in-depth scrutiny of a quotation from the Latin al-Fārābī ending the presentation of logic in the Divisio scientiarum (ca. 1250) of the Parisian Arts Master Arnoul of Provence (Arnulfus Provincialis). Once accomplished this revision using the various Latin versions or adaptations of the Farabian Enumeration of the sciences (Iḥṣāʾ al-ʿulūm) by Gerard of Cremona (...) and Gundissalinus, it is clear that, despite a certain duality in its manuscript tradition, the relevant passage in Arnulfus Provincialis’s Divisio scientiarum does not merely distinguish inner logos and external logos, but also considers, like its source, a third logos, and that in a way susceptible to refine the characterization of al-Fārābī’s triadic logos as Le Discours intérieur reports this triade at the occasion of its judicious comparison with a parallel doctrine in John Damascene (Ekdosis akribès tès orthodoxou pisteôs alias De fide orthodoxa) interpreted differently by Thomas Aquinas following Albert the Great. English summary: This text presents a collection of papers, drawn from a colloquium held in Aix-en-Provence, that question the revival of interest in practical philosophy and strive to appreciate its meaning and ambition, based off the exemplary figure of Socrates. This text hopes to present a better understanding of both the Socratic dialogues and our present day and age. Ce regain d'interet pour la philosophie pratique, et notamment pour la discussion et la deliberation philosophiques, renouant avec le dialegesthai socratique, conduit a une reflexion fondamentale sur la fonction de la parole philosophique, une parole qui est aujourd'hui amenee a se produire en des lieux nouveaux et sur des questions qui sont d'abord de nature ethique et politique. Le present collectif, issu d'un colloque qui s'est tenu a Aix-en-Provence, recueille diverses contributions qui toutes s'interrogent sur ce renouveau et s'efforcent d'en apprecier le sens et l'ambition, en le rapportant a la figure exemplaire de Socrate philosophant sur l'agora.
