Thirteen secondary social studies and English teachers participated throughout one academic school year. Participants were evaluated for their implementation of historical inquiries using primary sources and engaging students in disciplinary literacy practices using observations of classroom instruction and self-reporting surveys. The results indicated a positive relationship between teacher participation in the professional (...)

    Bien-être scolaire et communauté éducative inclusive : défis et enjeux d’une expérimentation pédagogique à l’Île Maurice pour penser le bonheur d’enseigner.Fabienne Serina-Karsky - 2023 - Revue Phronesis 12 (2-3):209-221.
This article is based on a five-year action-research project implemented in elementary school in Mauritius, which mobilized members of the educational community as well as various partners, and which revealed the challenges and stakes of a pedagogical experimentation that promotes well-being in the perspective of an inclusive educational community. The qualitative and quantitative survey that mobilized the different actors made it possible to measure the impacts of the experimentation, particularly on the school environment, the well-being of the children and that (...)

Psychoanalytic practice in the light of psychiatric patient records: The elusive history of Freudian-inspired psychotherapy (Strasbourg, 1940s–1970s). [REVIEW]Florent Serina - 2023 - History of the Human Sciences 36 (3-4):158-177.
This article delves into a problem that is still seldom addressed by historians—namely, the use of medical records testifying to the implementation of a psychoanalytically inspired treatment within a psychiatric institution for historical research. Based on publications, a broad spectrum of medical patient records, and interviews with former practitioners, it more broadly addresses issues related to the attention to patients’ voices at the University Psychiatric Clinic of Strasbourg, a central institution of psychiatric care in Northeastern France that was once considered (...)

We Are Still Here: A Photographic History of the American Indian Movement.Dick Bancroft, Laura Waterman Wittstock & Rigoberto Menchu Tum - 2013 - Borealis Books.
The American Indian Movement, founded in 1968 in Minneapolis, burst into that turbulent time with passion, anger, and radical acts of resistance. Spurred by the Civil Rights movement, Native people began to protest the decades--centuries--of corruption, racism, and abuse they had endured. They argued for political, social, and cultural change, and they got attention. The photographs of activist Dick Bancroft, a key documentarian of AIM, provide a stunningly intimate view of this major piece of American history from 1970 to 1981. (...)

  25. On buddhistic ontology: A comparative study of Mou zongsan and kyoto school philosophy.Tomomi Asakura - 2011 - Philosophy East and West 61 (4):647-678.
Mou Zongsan's notion of "Buddhistic ontology" is interpreted here in its fundamental difference from his own previous metaphysical scheme, in the light of the Kyoto School philosophers' similar attempts to resolve the Kantian antinomy of practical reason. This is an alternative both to the analysis provided by previous interpreters of Mou's Buddhistic philosophy, such as Hans-Rudolf Kantor and N. Serina Chan, and to the comparative studies of Mou's theories with Kyoto School philosophy by Ng Yu-kwan. Previous researchers considered Mou's (...)

Victims and Victimhood.Trudy Govier - 2014 - Peterborough, CA: Broadview Press.
Who is a victim? Considerations of innocence typically figure in our notions of victimhood, as do judgments about causation, responsibility, and harm. Those identified as victims are sometimes silenced or blamed for their misfortune—responses that are typically mistaken and often damaging. However, other problems arise when we defer too much to victims, being reluctant to criticize their judgments or testimony. Reaching a sensitive and yet critical stand on victims’ credibility is a difficult matter. In this book, Trudy Govier carefully examines (...)

  27. La fortuna di Giovanni Pico della Mirandola nelle Disputationes Aristotelicae di Tommaso Giannini.Simone Fellina - 2018 - Noctua 5 (1):72-90.
Tommaso Giannini was a prominent professor at the ferrarese Studium between sixteenth and seventeenth century. Probably influenced by Platonic sympathies nurtured by the Court and partly by the University milieu, in 1587 he published his first work titled De providentia ad sententiam Platonis et Platonicorum liber unus, which was a catalyst for his academic career. A compilative work in essence, the De providentia displays a large amount of sources always tacitly used: Marsilio Ficino, Jacques Charpentier, Giulio Serina, Stefano Tiepolo, (...)

    religious agency in Latin America’s hinterland.Radha Sarkar - 2021 - Feminist Review 129 (1):69-87.
Does religiosity help or hinder the exercise of agency? This article brings new evidence to bear on this long-standing debate, examining the life and work of the indigenous activist and follower of liberation theology, Rigoberta Menchú, in Guatemala, and the experiences of a millenarian community in Brazil, particularly one of its leaders, Dona Dodô. The two cases elucidate the dynamics of agency and piety, challenging the idea that pious individuals lack agency. In particular, the article interrogates the construction of pious (...)

Experiential narratives of rape and torture.Diana Fritz Cates - 2010 - Journal of Religious Ethics 38 (1):43-66.
Many Guatemalan women suffered extreme sexual violence during the latter half of the twentieth century. Learning of this violence can evoke hatred in persons who love and respect women—hatred for the men who perpetrated the violence and also for other men around the world who victimize women in this way. Hatred is a common response to a perceived evil, and it might in some cases be a fitting response, but it is important to subject one's emotions to critical moral reflection. (...)
