The Protestant ethic — a moral code stressing hard work, rigorous self-discipline, and the organization of one's life in the service of God — was made famous by sociologist and political economist Max Weber. In this brilliant study (his best-known and most controversial), he opposes the Marxist concept of dialectical materialism and its view that change takes place through "the struggle of opposites." Instead, he relates the rise of a capitalist economy to the Puritan determination to work out anxiety over (...) salvation or damnation by performing good deeds — an effort that ultimately discouraged belief in predestination and encouraged capitalism. In diesem Band der Max Weber-Gesamtausgabe werden Webers Texte zum asketischen Protestantismus aus den Jahren 1904 bis 1906 in ihrer überarbeiteten Fassung, wie er sie 1919/20 zum Druck gab, zusammen mit der »Vorbemerkung« in historisch-kritischer Bearbeitung präsentiert. Diese »Vorbemerkung« stellte er an den Beginn seiner Sammlung religionssoziologischer Aufsätze, die vier Bände umfassen sollte, und legte darin den Zweck dieser Sammlung dar.

Das Buchbeinhaltet Max Webers vollständige Schriften zu wissenschaftlichen und politischen Berufen: „Wissenschaft als Beruf”, die Artikel zu Hochschulen, und „Politik als Beruf”. Die Einleitung des Herausgebers verbindet beide Berufe konzeptionell und in der Person Max Webers. Die Verwendung von C. G. Jungs psychologischer Typentheorie, die durch den Myers-Briggs Typindikator (MBTI) weiterentwickelt wurde, wird ein Verständnis seines Persönlichkeitstypus ermöglicht. Das Buch ist die überarbeitete und aktualisierte Auflage der englischen Ausgabe „Max Weber’s Complete Writings on Academic and Political Vocations”. In der zweiten (...) Auflage des Bandes wurde die Einleitung um einige Analysen von Webers Schriften erweitert. Außerdem wurden zwei weitere Artikel aufgenommen und die Bibliographie um einige bedeutsame Werke ergänzt. English summary: Max Weber's famous work Die protestantische Ethik und der 'Geist' des Kapitalismusm (The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism) is published here in the same form as the original version dating from 1904 and 1905. In addition, it includes texts that emerged during the first controversy surrounding the work in the years 1907 to 1910, namely four criticisms and four counter criticisms. These are presented their unabridged form. The volume contains other texts from the between 1905 and (...) 1910 which are related to the subject matter covered in the study, such as the summary of Weber's lecture at a meeting of the Eranos Circle in spring 1905, his 1906 draft Kirchen und Sekten in Nordamerika (churches and sects in North America) and his contributions to a debate on a lecture by Ernst Troeltsch at the Erster Deutscher Soziologentag (first German conference of sociological studies) in 1910. The introduction provides an explanation of the historical context of the texts with regard to their content and publication, the editorial reports illustrate in particular Weber's selection and use of sources. The volume is complemented by several indices and a glossary. English summary: The study of the philosophy of history is currently divided into two largely irreconcilable approaches. The methodological and scientific analysis of historical practice stands opposed to an approach based on the reflection on the historicity of human identity. Previous attempts to overcome this discrepancy have been prevented from seeking recourse in Hegel's historical thought, since it is still seen as representing a substantialist and tangible philosophy of history and therefore as being theoretically obsolete. Max Winter shows that Hegel (...) not only possesses a theoretically sophisticated and formal philosophy of history, but one that is also able to bridge gaps within philosophy of history today, in that it combines an epistemology of historical knowledge with a theory of historical identity. German description: Die gegenwartige Geschichtsphilosophie in ist in zwei relativ unvermittelte Ansatze geschieden: Der methodologisch-wissenschaftstheoretischen Analyse geschichtswissenschaftlicher Praxis steht die Reflexion auf die Geschichtlichkeit menschlicher Identitat gegenuber. Filosofia da educação e pesquisa educacional: fragilidade teórica na investigação educacional Resumo: O ensaio trata do problema da fragilidade teórica do campo investigativo educacional brasileiro e desenvolve a hipótese de que tal fragilidade deve-se ao fato da pesquisa educacional ter-se esquecido da pergunta pela validade de seu próprio conhecimento à medida que abandonou o diálogo crítico e criativo com a tradição. O texto apresenta, inicialmente, com base em Gatti, um diagnóstico da fragilidade teórica da pesquisa educacional brasileira. Na sequência, elenca (...) e interpreta quatro fatores principais da fragilidade teórica e da frouxidão conceitual das pesquisas educacionais: o filosófico, o epistemológico, o político e o pedagógico. Por fim, problematiza o estatuto e a finalidade da filosofia da educação, concebendo o diálogo crítico com a tradição intelectual como uma das formas mais genuínas de sua contribuição à pesquisa educacional. L’article esquisse une histoire de la notion de milieu en confrontant l’article de Georges Canguilhem, « Le vivant et son milieu » (1946), à celui de Leo Spitzer « Milieu et ambiance » (1942). Alors que Spitzer conteste l’opposition entre un milieu abstrait et un environnement « chaud », Canguilhem entend transformer les éléments d’une compréhension mécaniste du milieu en une idée vitaliste et productive de l’interaction mutuelle entre milieu et organisme. L’article se concentre ensuite sur la perspective littéraire et (...) esthétique de la discussion de la relation entre le vivant et son milieu, à partir de l’Histoire de la littérature anglaise de Taine. Dans deux textes de 1930 et 1931, Canguilhem présente une critique véhémente de Taine et oppose à la compréhension déterministe du milieu un concept esthétique qu’il réinvestit pour les sciences de la vie : le concept de création. En repensant la notion de milieu à travers une « esthétique du milieu », l’article conclut en opposant les critiques de Spitzer et de Canguilhem adressées à la compréhension déterministe du milieu et montre que l’opposition radicale entre détermination et création, que Canguilhem semble établir dans ses premiers textes, est reformulée dans son étude postérieure sur Le normal et le pathologique. La vie est créatrice relativement à son milieu au travers des déplacements vers un nouveau milieu, qui est lui-même, à son tour, vulnérable, précaire et inachevé. Pour penser une telle esthétique du milieu, il faut remodeler la notion d’activité artistique à partir d’un concept du vivant qui se forme dans sa confrontation constante avec son milieu. (shrink)

The text considers the possibility of a mediatic historiography, that is, a form of historiographic writing in which the media, in this case images, participate. The central object of investigation is the strategy of reenactment that is traditionally regarded as a means of eventorientated historiography. Contemporary art has recently questioned these strategies and proposed to replace the totalizing or globalizing approach of history and historiography with a more fragmentary and critical perspective. On the backdrop of Michel Foucault’s methodological reflections on (...) history that he develops in Archeology of Knowledge, the text analyzes different forms of a politics of history of the images through three examples of reenactment taken from film, theatre and the fine arts.
