Within the narrative fora.d.32, Tacitus recreates a spirited speech delivered before the Senate by theequesMarcus Terentius (Ann. 6.8), defending himself retrospectively for having been a ‘friend’ of Sejanus. This speech, the only extended speech inoratio rectato feature inAnnalsBook 6, is historiographically rich and suggestive.This article first analyses the speech as a compelling piece of oratory in its own right. It then explores the provocative mirroring of another important speech in Curtius Rufus (7.1.19–40). This is where the general Amyntas, defending (...) himself before Alexander the Great against charges of participation in an alleged conspiracy, refuses to deny his friendship with the conspirator Philotas (now dead). Scholars have rightly acknowledged the significant intertextuality of these two speeches in Curtius Rufus and Tacitus. Yet the interest in this mirroring between Amyntas and Terentius has overshadowed another important intertext. This article demonstrates how Tacitus also engages with a programmatic moment from the opening of Virgil'sAeneidwhen Aeolus is cajoled by Juno to unleash a devastating storm. Terentius wittily casts Tiberius as a powerful divinity whose whims had to be obeyed and himself as a helpless Aeolus doing his will.This article demonstrates that the two passages from Virgil and Curtius Rufus underpinning Terentius’ speech work together powerfully, challenging Tacitus’ readers to reflect on the difficulties of ‘speaking to power’ and on the compromises involved for men like Terentius in negotiating the complex political realities of the imperial system. This article discusses the text of seven passages in the etymological books 5–7 of Varro's De lingua Latina, and proposes new conjectures for all of them. The discussions are of direct relevance to the interpretation of fragments and testimonies of lost Latin authors quoted by Varro: the scenic poets Naevius, Pacuvius, Caecilius Statius, Juventius and Atilius, and the grammarian Aurelius Opillus. The senate had been abolished; the courts had been closed. His occupation was gone; but Cicero could not surrender himself to idleness. Cicero's own life was in danger from the fury of mad Antony and he left Rome about the end of March, 44 b.c. He dared not even stop permanently in any one of his various country estates, but, wretched, wandered from one of his villas to another nearly all the summer and autumn through. He would not suffer himself to become a prey to his overwhelming sorrow at the death of the republic and the final crushing of the hopes that had risen with Caesar's downfall, but worked at the highest tension on his philosophical studies. This paper aims to provide a unifying approach to the analysis of understanding coherencies and understanding subject matters by highlighting the contextualist nature of understanding. Inspired by the relevant alternatives contextualism about knowledge, I will argue that understanding inherently has context-sensitive features and that a theory of understanding that highlights those features can incorporate our intuitions towards understanding as well as consolidate the different accounts of how to analyse understanding. In developing a contextualist account of understanding, I will argue that (...) an account of the features commonly taken to be central to understanding greatly benefits from a contextualist framework. Central to my analysis will be the claim that a person has to fulfill the function of a competent problem solver in order to qualify for the ascription of understanding. In addition to the theoretical elucidation of my contextualist approach to understanding, a demanding hypothetical scenario will be developed to function as a test case. (shrink)

Neste artigo, acompanha-se a formulação do projeto filosófico de Merleau-Ponty em suas primeiras obras, frisando a necessária reforma da fenomenologia husserliana para que os temas existenciais pudessem ser contemplados pela investigação. Porém, uma vez centrada a feno-menologia nas vivências particulares, surge o problema da validade geral das suas teses, cuja resolução pede a extensão da necessidade até a experiência concreta.In this article, I discuss the formulation of Merleau-Ponty’s philosophical project in his early writings and stress the necessary reform of the (...) husserlian phenomenology in order to embrace existential themes. However, once the phenomenology is centered in the particularly experiences, the problem of the general validity of its thesis arises, and the solution requires the expansion of the necessity to the concrete experience. In this article are discussed some problems raised by T. S. Rukmani regarding the Yogasūtra. According to Rukmani, yoga is not a coherent logical system. After stating the general goals of the yoga system, interpretations of some passages of the Yogasūtra are formulated, and the defense is given that one must at least acknowledge the necessity of more exegetical investigation before judging the logical incoherence of the text. Finally, the problematic doctrine of living liberation in Yogasūtra is exposed.

O intuito deste texto será problematizar, à maneira preconizada por Marc Bloch (Apologia da História ou Ofício de Historiador,1944) – vale dizer, à luz de uma questão-problema – a produção filosófica, físico-matemática e teológica do jansenita francês Blaise Pascal (1623-1662). A indagação de fundo visa a desvelar a arqueologia das aporias e dilemas hodiernos da Razão dos modernos, por conseguinte se propondo um exercício crítico presente-passado-presente. Ensaiamos, neste lastro, a interpretação de que a singularidade filosófica de Pascal instaura, na primeira (...) Modernidade, um ceticismo filosófico de matriz agostiniana, que poderia hoje nos ensejar uma desejável reconfiguração da função da razão na História e na história. A dúvida de Pascal quanto à Razão Natural decantada por Descartes se permite descortinar com a ideia de um Deus Absconditus. Para tanto, o texto propõe uma interface analítica entre História Social e História Intelectual (História da Filosofia Moderna), procurando apresentar a pluralidade de vertentes teológico-filosóficas no seio do Catolicismo Romano e suas potencialidades para reconfigurar as trajetórias da razão hodierna para fora do labirinto pós-moderno. Von den zwei Fassungen der Abhandlungen, die sich wohl allein der äußeren Form nach voneinander unterschieden, ist heute nurmehr das zweite Buch der ersten Fassung unversehrt erhalten (der Dialog (...)
