End-of-Life Decisions in Intensive Care Units in Croatia—Pre COVID-19 Perspectives and Experiences From Nurses and Physicians.Marko Ćurković, Lovorka Brajković, Ana Jozepović, Dinko Tonković, Željko Župan, Nenad Karanović & Ana Borovečki - 2021 - Journal of Bioethical Inquiry 18 (4):629-643.
Healthcare professionals working in intensive care units are often involved in end-of-life decision-making. No research has been done so far about these processes taking place in Croatian ICUs. The aim of this study was to investigate the perceptions, experiences, and challenges healthcare professionals face when dealing with end-of-life decisions in ICUs in Croatia. A qualitative study was performed using professionally homogenous focus groups of ICU nurses and physicians of diverse professional and clinical backgrounds at three research sites. In total, six (...)

Paternalism and autonomy: views of patients and providers in a transitional country.Lucija Murgic, Philip C. Hébert, Slavica Sovic & Gordana Pavlekovic - 2015 - BMC Medical Ethics 16 (1):1-9.
BackgroundPatient autonomy is a fundamental, yet challenging, principle of professional medical ethics. The idea that individual patients should have the freedom to make choices about their lives, including medical matters, has become increasingly prominent in current literature. However, this has not always been the case, especially in communist countries where paternalistic attitudes have been interwoven into all relationships including medical ones. Patients’ expectations and the role of the doctor in the patient-physician relationship are changing. Croatia, as a transitional country, is (...)

Too Fast or Not Too Fast: The FDA's Approval of Merck's HPV Vaccine Gardasil.Lucija Tomljenovic & Christopher A. Shaw - 2012 - Journal of Law, Medicine and Ethics 40 (3):673-681.
There are not many public health issues where views are as extremely polarized as those concerning vaccination policies. Ever since its Fast Track approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2006, Merck's human papilloma virus vaccine Gardasil has been sparking controversy. Initially, the criticism has been focused at Merck, due to their overly aggressive marketing strategies and lobbying campaigns. According to a 2007 editorial in Nature Biotechnology, Surrounded by a chorus of disapproval, Merck cracked. As Nature Biotechnology went (...)

  6. A Reactogenic ‘Placebo’ and the Ethics of Informed Consent in the Gardasil HPV Vaccine Clinical Trials: A Case Study from Denmark.Lucija Tomljenovic & Leemon McHenry - 2024 - International Journal of Risk and Safety in Medicine 35 (2):159-180.
Biomedical ethics requires that clinical trial participants be accurately informed of the potential risks associated with investigational medical products. We found that the vaccine manufacturer Merck made false statements to the trial participants about the safety of Gardasil in its Future II HPV vaccine trial in Denmark. The clinical study protocol specified that safety testing was one of the trial’s primary objectives, but the recruitment brochure given to trial participants stated this was not the case, as allegedly the vaccine had (...)

Hypothesis: Drainage of the peripheral tissue edema by the hyperbaric oxygen therapy because of hyperoxygenation that constricts arterioles and alters the downstream capillary fluid traffic in affected tissues.Sven Kurbel, Vid Ćurković & Borna Kovačić - 2023 - Bioessays 45 (6):2300023.
Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy still lacks proper interpretations of its many actions. This hypothesis is based on reports of temporarily elevated peripheral vascular resistance (PVR) during HBO sessions. Besides that, during HBO sessions, hyperoxygenated tissues can reduce their perfusion so much that CO2 can accumulate in them. Tissue perfusion depends on vascular innervation and on the balance between systemic constrictors and local dilators. During an HBO session, increased tissue oxygen levels suppress dilatory mechanisms. Tissue hyperoxygenation increases PVR, suggesting that the (...)

Attitudes about withholding or withdrawing life-prolonging treatment, euthanasia, assisted suicide, and physician assisted suicide: a cross-sectional survey among the general public in Croatia.Chris Gastmans, Bert Gordijn, Diana Spoljar, Jurica Vukovic, Filip Rubic, Milivoj Novak, Stjepan Oreskovic, Krunoslav Nikodem, Marko Curkovic & Ana Borovecki - 2022 - BMC Medical Ethics 23 (1):1-16.
BackgroundThere has been no in-depth research of public attitudes on withholding or withdrawing life-prolonging treatment, euthanasia, assisted suicide and physician assisted suicide in Croatia. The aim of this study was to examine these attitudes and their correlation with sociodemographic characteristics, religion, political orientation, tolerance of personal choice, trust in physicians, health status, experiences with death and caring for the seriously ill, and attitudes towards death and dying. MethodsA cross-sectional study was conducted on a three-stage random sample of adult citizens of (...)

The precarious rights of senior citizens, especially those who are highly educated and who are expected to counsel and guide the younger generations, has stimulated the creation internationally of advocacy associations and opinion leader groups. The strength of these groups, however, varies from country to country. In some countries, they are supported and are the focus of intense interest; in others, they are practically ignored. For this is reason we believe that the creation of a network of all these associations (...)

Chainable and circularly chainable semicomputable sets in computable topological spaces.Eugen Čičković, Zvonko Iljazović & Lucija Validžić - 2019 - Archive for Mathematical Logic 58 (7-8):885-897.
We examine conditions under which, in a computable topological space, a semicomputable set is computable. It is known that in a computable metric space a semicomputable set S is computable if S is a continuum chainable from a to b, where a and b are computable points, or S is a circularly chainable continuum which is not chainable. We prove that this result holds in any computable topological space.

Making ocean literacy inclusive and accessible.Boris Worm, Carla Elliff, Juliana Graça Fonseca, Fiona R. Gell, Catarina Serra-Gonçalves, Noelle K. Helder, Kieran Murray, Hoyt Peckham, Lucija Prelovec & Kerry Sink - 2021 - Ethics in Science and Environmental Politics 21:1-9.
Engagement in marine science has historically been the privilege of a small number of people with access to higher education, specialised equipment and research funding. Such constraints have often limited public engagement and may have slowed the uptake of ocean science into environmental policy. Recognition of this disconnect has spurred a growing movement to promote ocean literacy, defined as one’s individual understanding of how the ocean affects people and how people affect the ocean. Over the last 2 decades, this concept (...)

    Laktancij in spis O smrtih preganjalcev.Milan Lovenjak - 2021 - Clotho 3 (1):123-139.
