Epicurus and the Epicurean tradition.Jeffrey Fish & Kirk R. Sanders (eds.) - 2011 - New York: Cambridge University Press.
Epicureanism after the generation of its founders has been characterised as dogmatic, uncreative and static. But this volume brings together work from leading classicists and philosophers that demonstrates the persistent interplay in the school between historical and contemporary influences from outside the school and a commitment to the founders' authority. The interplay begins with Epicurus himself, who made arresting claims of intellectual independence, yet also admitted to taking over important ideas from predecessors, and displayed more receptivity than is usually thought (...)

A critique of Paulo Freire’s perspective on human nature to inform the construction of theoretical underpinnings for research.Kate Sanders - 2020 - Nursing Philosophy 21 (3):e12300.
This article presents a critique of Paulo Freire's philosophical perspective on human nature in the context of a doctoral research study to explore “muchness” or nurses’ subjective experience of well‐being; and demonstrates how this critique has informed the refinement of the theoretical principles used to inform research methodology and methods. Engaging in philosophical groundwork is essential for research coherence and integrity. Through this groundwork, largely informed by Freire's critical pedagogy and his ideas on humanization, I recognized the need to clarify (...)

Tracking shame and humiliation in Accident and Emergency.Karen Sanders, Stephen Pattison & Brian Hurwitz - 2011 - Nursing Philosophy 12 (2):83-93.
In this paper, we reflect upon shame and humiliation as threats to personal and professional integrity and moral agency within contemporary health care. A personal narrative, written by a nurse about a particular shift in a British National Health Service Accident and Emergency Department, is provided as a case study. This is critically reflected and commented upon in dialogue with insights into the nature of shame and humiliation. It is suggested that Accident and Emergency is a locus that is latently (...)

    The Intergenerational Transmission of Occupational Status and Sex-Typing at Children's Labour Market Entry.Harry B. G. Ganzeboom, Karin Sanders & Sylvia E. Korupp - 2002 - European Journal of Women's Studies 9 (1):7-29.
To what extent do the mother's and father's jobs and occupational sex-typing influence the status and sex-typing of their children's occupation at first entry into the labour market? Referring to a database containing 5027 respondents of two merged Dutch surveys held between 1992 and 1995, this study finds that the effect of the mother's occupational status on her daughter's is significant, but smaller than either the effect of father's status on his son's or his daughter's status. The mother's occupational sex-typing (...)

Gender Gap in Earnings at the Industry Level.Karin Sanders & Jim Allen - 2002 - European Journal of Women's Studies 9 (2):163-180.
In this article the authors seek an answer to the question: does the percentage of women working in an industry have an effect on earnings distinct from the effect of sex at the individual level? On the basis of the `comparable worth' approach, the authors hypothesized that, controlling for education, experience and sex, the percentage of women working in an industry would have a negative effect on earnings. This hypothesis was tested by performing multi-level analyses using data from 12 countries. (...)

    CHIRON: Planning in an open-textured domain. [REVIEW]Kathryn E. Sanders - 2001 - Artificial Intelligence and Law 9 (4):225-269.
Planning problems arise in law when an individual (or corporation)wants to perform a sequence of actions that raises legal issues. Manylawyers make their living planning transactions, and a system thathelped them to solve these problems would be in demand. The designer of such a system in a common-law domain must addressseveral difficult issues, including the open-textured nature of legal rules, the relationship between legal rules and cases, the adversarial nature ofthe domain, and the role of argument. In addition, the system's design isconstrained (...)
