Paradoxes from the Individualization of Human Resource Management: The Case of Telework.Laurent Taskin & Valérie Devos - 2005 - Journal of Business Ethics 62 (1):13-24.
In the context of change to the “new modernity” described in Beck’s work, companies develop management modes and methods that focus more and more on individuals. Constitutive of the individualization process, human resources practices have become ambivalent as the process itself. This contribution examines how a managerial and organizational innovation as telework contributes to the process of individualization, and the paradoxes it addresses to management. At the interface of the social and the technical, teleworking appears as a flexible arrangement, meeting (...)

Constructing a theoretical model of moral distress.Edison Luiz Devos Barlem & Flávia Regina Souza Ramos - 2015 - Nursing Ethics 22 (5):608-615.
Moral distress has been characterised as one of the main ethical problems affecting nurses in all health systems, and has been depicted as a threat to nurses’ integrity and to the quality of patient care. In recent years, several studies tried to investigate moral distress, its causes and consequences for health professionals, clients and organisations. However, such studies are considered controversial and vulnerable, mainly because they lack a solid philosophical and empirical basis. The present article aimed at elaborating a theoretical (...)

Principals in schools with a positive school culture.Nadine Engels, Gwendoline Hotton, Geert Devos, Dave Bouckenooghe & Antonia Aelterman - 2008 - Educational Studies 34 (3):159-174.
This study focuses on the profile of principals who seem to be able to shape the school culture to best encourage teaching and learning. Data from a representative sample of primary schools (N = 46) were collected through questionnaires for principals and for teachers (N = 700) and semi?structured interviews with the principals. Functioning, well?being and personal characteristics of the principal, structural and cultural characteristics of school, and organisational context are examined. Compared to their opposites, principals in schools with cultures (...)

The influence of school leadership on teachers' perception of teacher evaluation policy.Melissa Tuytens & Geert Devos - 2010 - Educational Studies 36 (5):521-536.
The understanding of teachers? perception of new educational policy is crucial since this perception shapes the policy?s implementation. However, quantitative research in this area is scarce. This article draws on empirical data to investigate whether the school leader might influence his teachers? perception of the new teacher evaluation policy. The conceptualisation of teachers? perception consists of three policy characteristics: practicality, need and clarifying function. Our results indicate that school leadership influences teachers? policy perception. More specifically, the structure a school leader (...)

Exploring the link between distributed leadership and job satisfaction of school leaders.Hester Hulpia & Geert Devos - 2009 - Educational Studies 35 (2):153-171.
The main purpose of this study was to map school leaders? perceptions concerning the cooperation of the leadership team, the distribution of leadership functions and participative decision?making, and to asses their relative weight in terms of predicting school leaders? job satisfaction. Also, the effect of demographical and structural school variables (i.e. seniority, job experience, school size, size of the leadership team, school type) on school leaders? job satisfaction was examined. A sample of 130 school leaders of 46 large secondary schools (...)

Ethics in the Societal Debate on Genetically Modified Organisms: A (Re)Quest for Sense and Sensibility.Devos Yann, Maeseele Pieter, Reheul Dirk, Speybroeck Linda & Waele Danny - 2008 - Journal of Agricultural and Environmental Ethics 21 (1):29-61.
Via a historical reconstruction, this paper primarily demonstrates how the societal debate on genetically modified organisms (GMOs) gradually extended in terms of actors involved and concerns reflected. It is argued that the implementation of recombinant DNA technology out of the laboratory and into civil society entailed a “complex of concerns.” In this complex, distinctions between environmental, agricultural, socio-economic, and ethical issues proved to be blurred. This fueled the confusion between the wider debate on genetic modification and the risk assessment of (...)

    Circling around transgression.Rob Devos - 2005 - Bijdragen 61 (3):308-333.
Foucault rejects the subject as a center, i.e. as a transparent self-conscious being, who gives meaning to his actions. However, ideas about subjects that think and will autonomously go on functioning within modern culture. Discourses on subjectivity call for an archeological and genealogical explanation. This compels Foucault to resort increasingly to subjectivity: as product and target of power, but also as a source of resistance and as an agent. After all, Foucault defines power as ‘actions about actions’. In the end, (...)

The way politicians get in contact with local polities in Flanders bas been examined based on the sociological distinction between ascribed and achieved status positions. Politically active relatives were considered characteristic of ascribed local mandates.Membership of different associations was seen as a way of personally achieving a local mandate. The results indicate that a combination of both was most frequently occuring. In spite of popular convictions, family was still quite important to get in contact with politics. This is shown in (...)

The general question of this theoretical reflection concerns the impact of the multi-level organisation of policy processes for the division of power between collective social actors. Firstly, We deal with the shrinking of the political capacity in the contemporary era of postfordism and deterritorialisation. In this framework, attention is paid to the ideological significance of governance.Using the concept of 'jumping of scales', We then consider the different consequences of the sui generis European multi-level setting for organised labour and capital, which (...)

According to the new public management, the interaction between governments and their citizens should be "client oriented". It is considered crucial for policy-makers that they know how citizens perceive the policy process, that they know if citizens are satisfied with policy outcomes. Our empirical study deals with the satisfaction with global local policy. We examine the main determinants of satisfaction with global local policy. This study is based on a face-to-face survey among citizens entitled to vote in Ghent. More than 1500 (...)
