Gerda Leber-Hagenau, bekannte österreichische Schriftstellerin und Übersetzerin, widmete ihre Aufmerksamkeit der in Österreich bekannten Persönlichkeit des polnischen Königs. Über Jan III. Sobieski hat eine bedeutende Abhandlung u.a. Otto Forst de Battaglia verfaßt. Gerda Leber-Hagenau verfolgt in ihrem Buch das ehrgeizige Ziel, nicht die militärische Seite des Entsatzes Wiens und den entscheidenden Anteil des polnischen Königs zu zeigen, sondern sie ist bestrebt, die Psyche des Königs auf künstlerische Weise zu gestalten.

The aim of this article is to focus on pragmatic teaching in a modern school. Getting knowledge should always be connected with improving certain skills (linguistic, analytic, critical etc.). Firstly, in this work the methods of teaching and forms of statement of pragmatic aims were shown. It is pointed out what kind of skills students acquire when particular methods of leaching are used (e.g. discussions, methods of plan, dramas, press conferences, or projects) and how teaching various forms of expressing ideas (...) influences gaining competence of a sender and a receiver of messages. It is also presented how the methods let the young people develop their minds, imagination, and critical attitudes. In other words, all this allows the students to use their knowledge functionally. Moreover, the article raises the importan issue of linguistic, literary and cultural education in the sense of pragmatic teaching. Learning about a language should predominantly provide the students with learning the language (M. Nagajowa). Literary education demands some analytic skills, and encouraging to participate in culture, improving the abilities of reception of various forms of art by creative activities aim at making the young people be aware of practical usage of their knowledge. The article also underlines reading comprehension skills – extremely important with a view to the new linal secondary-school exams (Matura 2002) coming soon, and it has, according to S. Bortnowski, some ‘utilitarian dimension’. To sum up, the modern school should educate pragmatists, who experiment, initiate and use. (shrink)

Celem artykułu jest analiza rozbieżności w kwalifikacji deontologicznej czynów pomiędzy etyką ogólną a normami kodeksowymi psychoterapii. Wspominane rozbieżności analizowane są na przykładzie normy poufności i normy taktu. Wykazane zostają rozbieżności pomiędzy podstawowymi kategoriami deontycznymi w obu porównywanych systemach w zakresie norm poufności i taktu, świadczące o niezależności etyki zawodowej psychoterapeutów od etyki ogólnej.

The aim of the article is to present some of the differences and similari- ties in various versions of the double effect principle. The following formulations will be analyzed: that of Thomas Aquinas and two contemporary ap- proaches, namely those of Mangan and Boyle. It will be shown that the presented modern versions vary significantly and the distinction between their intended and only predicted effects is far from clear. As a result, the different contemporary for- mulations of DDE lead to (...) contradictory conclusions, with some justifying what the others condemn. Moreover, it will be demonstrated that, unlike Aquinas, contem- porary authors mostly concentrate on unintentionality condition while neglecting the proportionality requirement. So, unlike Aquinas, they only take into account a narrow scope of cases, where the evil effect occurs with certainty, which leads to a complicated and intricate hypothetical intention test like Donagan’s. It will be shown that, besides its theoretical indistinctness, DDE lead to serious pragmatic risks. It can be quite easily misused as a kind of psychological mechanism to protect self-esteem from a sense of guilt since wrong-doing is treated as merely a predicted unintended effect. (shrink)

The study was designed to examine whether trait emotional intelligence would moderate the impact of negative emotions at work on job burnout. A total of 188 female nurses participated in this study and completed measures of trait affectivity, emotional intelligence, anger and sadness at work [over five consecutive days, nurses rated the extent to which they experienced anger-related emotions (i.e., irritation, embitterment and anger) and sadness-related emotions (i.e., depression, disappointment and sadness)], and burnout. The results revealed significant and positive relationships (...) between both types of negative emotions and burnout above and beyond demographics and the nurses’ trait affectivity. Importantly, the study demonstrated that trait emotional intelligence buffers the effects of negative emotions on burnout. Specifically, anger- and sadness-related emotions predicted greater burnout among nurses with low trait emotional intelligence but not among nurses with high trait emotional intelligence. These results suggest that emotional intelligence training could be implemented to prevent the adverse effect of negative emotions felt at work on job burnout. (shrink)

Mistrz Eckhart, postać niejednokrotnie bardzo kontrowersyjna, cieszy się ogromnym zainteresowaniem zarówno wśród teologów, filozofów, a przede wszystkim mistyków. Głównym powodem tej uwagi jest jego koncepcja dotycząca zjednoczenia mistycznego, która opiera się głównie na zagadnieniu iskierki duszy oraz niższej części duszy, która staje się wręcz tożsama z Bogiem. Według Eckharta z jednej strony jesteśmy zrodzeni, natomiast z drugiej strony nie jesteśmy, ponieważ powinniśmy oczekiwać zrodzenia w niższej części duszy. „Narodzenie Boga w duszy” - tak Mistrz Eckhart określa zjednoczenie mistyczne, które należałoby, (...) według niego, umieścić w swoistych kategoriach przebóstwienia. Źródłem zaś całej idei przebóstwienia jest nic innego, jak silne podobieństwo między Bogiem i człowiekiem, a dokładnie jego duszą. Nietrudno odnaleźć tu liczne podobieństwa, które z łatwością można dostrzec między myślą Eckharta i myślą neoplato- ników pogańskich - Plotyna czy Proklosa. Istnieje wiele przesłanek, że Mistrz Eckhart próbuje połączyć idealistyczną filozofię neoplatońską z czysto racjonalną filozofią Tomasza z Akwinu, jednak aspekty Akwinaty są w myśli Mistrza Eckharta niemal niezauważalne. Wydaje się, że liczne trudności związane z interpretacją jego poglądów wynikają z ewidentnego braku podstaw metafizyki w jego dziełach. Jest to nieco dziwne, biorąc pod uwagę fakt, że Mistrz Eckhart doskonale znał poglądy Tomasza z Akwinu, który w sposóbjednoznaczny wypracował koncepcję bytu.Proces zjednoczenia jest w myśli Eckharta przedstawiony w kontekście poznawania. Intelekt stanowi tę władzę w bycie ludzkim, dzięki któremu może on pozostawać w nieustannym związku z Bogiem, co pozwala mu na wznoszenie się. Droga do zjednoczenia z Bogiem zawsze zatem będzie drogą ku Najwyższemu Intelektowi poprzez doskonalenie intelektu w sobie samym. Jest to jednak proces, który wymaga swoistego wyjścia z siebie samego. Wyjście to polega na swego rodzaju dążeniu do jak największej prostoty, co polega na odrzuceniu wszelkiej różnorodności oraz inności. Pojawia się zatem ubóstwo rozumiane w sposób zupełnie paradoksalny, ponieważ w konsekwencji zjednoczenia z Bogiemjawi się onojako największe bogactwo.Warto jednocześnie pamiętać, że ów mistyczny kontakt z Bogiem nie jest czymś zupełnie zewnętrznym dla człowieka. Otóż zjednoczenie mistyczne nie polega na wznoszeniu się duszy do Boga, lecz na ujawnieniu Boga w niższej części duszy, wyższa bowiem część duszy, czyli iskierka duszy,jużjest tożsama z Bogiem. Narodziny Boga to uczestnictwo niższej części duszy w szczęściu iskierki duszy. Eckhart wyraźnie wskazuje, że są to narodziny Syna w duszy, które jednak nie oddala duszy od Ojca. Jest to nadal ten sam rodzaj jedności. Zostaje wręcz zniesiona wszelka jedno- stkowość człowieka, zaciera się jego tożsamość. Ta ontologiczna jedność z samym Bogiem jest jednocześnie jednością z dobrem w najwyższym wymiarze, dlatego też zacierają się wszelkie dylematy moralne, które rozstrzygają się dzięki zupełnej jedności, w której tożsamość bytu ludzkiego z Bogiem nie ma żadnego zróżnicowania. La política es para el autor español un motor que activa a los individuos para que realicen con entusiasmo su propia vida y, a la vez, las posibilidades de su nación. Esta "política de realización" es resultado de superar el idealismo en el área política.

Artykuł ukazuje problematykę związaną z korzystaniem z najstarszych rękopiśmiennych ksiąg wpisów, będących jednymi z najstarszych wytworów kancelarii miejskich. Księgi te są podstawowym źródłem do badań nad najdawniejszymi dziejami miast polskich. Artykuł miał na celu po pierwsze ukazać, jaki jest stopień zachowania tego typu źródeł, po drugie – zasygnalizować stopień udostępnienia ich kopii cyfrowych w sieci. Stosując metody opisową i indukcyjną, zarysowano stan zachowania zasobu źródłowego ksiąg rękopiśmiennych wybranych miast oraz wskazano, w jakich kolekcjach archiwalnych i bibliotecznych są one przechowywane. Określono (...) także, czy wymienione jednostki dostępne są w formie cyfrowej. Następnie przy wykorzystaniu metody statystycznej analizowano stopień rozproszenia ksiąg miejskich oraz stopień ich digitalizacji i udostępnienia. Uwaga została skupiona na grupie sześciu miast leżących na obszarze dawnego województwa krakowskiego, reprezentujących ośrodki średnie i małe (Biecz, Bochnia, Ciężkowice, Nowy Sącz, Olkusz, Proszowice). Przeprowadzone analizy ukazują, że stopień digitalizacji i udostępniania tych źródeł jest niezadowalający, co w połączeniu z rozproszeniem archiwaliów – znacznym w przypadku niektórych miast, zwłaszcza Olkusza – nadal stanowi pewną barierę dla badaczy wykorzystujących tego typu źródła. Artykuł zawiera rozważania nad zróżnicowaniem tekstów eseistycznych dotyczących problematyki polskości, wynikającym z różnorodnej roli pamięci w poszczególnych koncepcjach narodowej tożsamości. Celem szkicu jest podjęcie refleksji nad relacją, w jaką wchodzą teksty, dające się określić jako tradycjonalistyczne oraz modernizacyjne, z orientacjami esencjalistycznymi i kontruktywistycznymi. Przedmiot analizy zawartej w tekście stanowią przede wszystkim dwie publikacje: Awangardowy konserwatyzm Pawła Rojka oraz Polska: wspólnota fantazmatyczna Agaty Bielik-Robson. Eseje te pozwalają się traktować jako reprezentatywne przykłady złożonych zależności ideowych występujących w obszarze refleksji nad polskością.

In the paper two seemingly distinct areas of philosophical investigations are brought together: metaphor and dialetheism. They both turn out to be deeply related, which becomes visible against a background, i.e. the hybrid structure of metaphor delineated in the first part. This network elicits three variations of dissonance subsequently called: (1) phantom-contradiction, which is combined with unconventionality of metaphors; (2) indexed-bound contradiction, bearing some cognitive tension but no real truth value gluts and; (3) logical contradiction “spread” between the two layers (...) of metaphorical structure. Finally, the analysis allows for approaching a theoretically pending question concerning the influence of dialetheic aspects of metaphor upon human cognition and thinking in general. (shrink)

Każdej sensownej wypowiedzi towarzyszy zawsze akt nazwany przez Austina illokucyjnym. Akt illokucyjny umożliwia słuchającemu określenie intencji mówiącego, czyli zinterpretowanie wypowiedzi (np. jako twierdzenia, pytania, prośby itp. ). Kluczowym pojęciem w semantycznej analizie aktów illokucyjnych dokonanej przez Searle 'a i Vandervekena jest moc illokucyjna. Określenie siedmiu składników mocy: celu illlokucyjnego, sposobu osiągania celu, stopnia siły celu, warunków szczerości, stopnia siły warunków szczerości, warunków przygotowawczych, warunków zawartości zdaniowej - je s t równoważne określeniu rodzaju aktu illokucyjnego. Semantyka Searle'a i Vandervekena stawia aktom (...) illokucyjnym warunek, aby były szczere. Modyfikacja tej semantyki ma na celu takie jej rozszerzenie, aby można było za jej pomocą opisać również akty nieszczere, np. kłamstwo, krzywoprzysięstwo, dezinformację oraz akty pomyłkowe, np. mylić się, bredzić. Rozszerzeniu uległy definicje: warunków szczerości oraz przygotowawczych. Warunkom tym odpowiada zbiór {1,0}, w zależności od tego, czy są spełnione (1), czy też nie (0). Istnieje zależność między wartością wymienionych warunków a warunkami spełnienia aktu illokucyjnego (conditions de satisfaction), które wobec tego uznane zostały za ósmy składnik mocy, na równi z innymi decydujący o rodzaju aktu. Wprowadzenie do semantyki mocy illokucyjnych wartości warunków szczerości, przygotowawczych oraz spełnienia aktu umożliwiło opis aktów nieszczerych i pomyłkowych, zbliżając w rezultacie teorię illokucji do faktycznych użyć języka. Looking at a number of memorials, memory sites and artworks relating to the Holocaust the book uses this idea of synaesthetic perception to explore trauma, memory and the production of art in relation to painful memories.

Pamela Sue Anderson’s project about vulnerability and the silencing of the female speaker began with her realization of the female philosopher’s position within academia. Exposing the disavowal of the female “knower,” Anderson lays bare the mechanisms of excluding women from intellectual, artistic and religious discourse. Moving beyond the negative configuration of vulnerability associated with an openness to violence, Anderson refigures it as an openness to affection. The denial of thus refigured vulnerability has led to the literal and discursive oppression of (...) women through the “wilful ignorance” of their intellectual, emotional and sexual needs. In this article Filipczak analyses manifestations of this oppression exposed by female writers who illustrate the predicament discussed by Anderson in their fiction. Starting with Anderson’s refiguring of Antigone as a figure of dissent and marginality in her early work, Filipczak discusses Maggie Tulliver from The Mill on the Floss by George Eliot, Morag Gunn from The Diviners by Margaret Laurence and Mary Magdalene from The Secret Gospel of Mary Magdalene by Michèle Roberts. What connects these characters is the fact that they are disavowed as knowers in intellectual, artistic or theological endeavours by male figures of authority who deny vulnerability as an openness to affection, and rely on social collusion with such denial. The analysis also refers to Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy and Aritha van Herk’s Places Far From Ellesmere. (shrink)

Good Clinical Practice is an international quality standard for conducting trials that involve participation of human subjects. Currently, the most widely accepted international document forming the base for GCP is the ICH Harmonised Tripartite Guideline for GCP, which defines in detail the responsibilities and obligations of parties engaged in clinical research. The purpose of this paper is to analyse how compliance with GCP provides protection of the trial subjects and assures quality and credibility of the data obtained.

The aim of the present paper is to discuss Socrates’ idea of philosophy asa service to the god. First the article investigates why Chaerephon wentto Delphi and why he asked Pythia the famous question concerningSocrates. The investigation provides a basis for distinguishing two majorperiods in his activity. The one preceding the Delphic oracle consists inconducting inquiries in a group of closest friends. The one following theDelphic oracle consist in addressing a much larger audience. An analysisof both periods suggests that the (...) oracle from Delphi greatly affectedSocrates’ relations with other Athenians. While the present article dealsalso with the issue of Socrates’ daimonion, it hypothesizes that the voiceof daimonion and the voice of Pythia could be regarded as Apollo’sinterventions. (shrink)

This study is a continuation of the work of Professor Kazimierz Wrześniewski. It concerns the role of curiositytrait in the dynamics of changes in coping and quality of life after a heart attack. The study was attended by 222 people after a heart attack, of whom 140 participated in the three stages of the study: at the beginning and at the end of cardiac rehabilitation and a year after leaving the resort. The participants aged 24-64 years. Curiosity-trait was measured by (...) Spielberger and Wrześniewski’s STPI questionnaire. To assess coping strategies a modified version of the COPE by Carver et al., was used. The specific and general quality of life were measured by the Polish adaptations of MacNew and NHP questionnaires. The level of curiosity-trait significantly differentiated changes in the dynamics of positive reinterpretation, problem solving and resignation, but did not affect the change in quality of life within the year after a heart attack. The conviction that Plato manipulated Thrasymachus’ views is today accepted by the scholarly opinion. Given the absence of testimonies regarding the political and moral views held by the historical Thrasymachus, the degree of this manipulation can be gauged only by assessing the degree of incoherence and ambiguity in the views of the Platonic Thrasymachus. This perspective, of necessity a self-referential one, is overcome by the hypothesis presented in the following article, namely, that Plato manipulates not as much the views of (...) the historical Thrasymachus as the extremely concise and ambiguous thesis which he has ascribed to him; and that the goal of this manipulation is to mock Thrasymachus’ style and rhetorical posture – both confirmed by testimonies outside the Platonic text – as ill suited to the philosophical reflection on the content of this thesis. Inferential erotetic logic and inquisitive semantics give accounts of questions and model various aspects of questioning. In this paper we concentrate upon connections between inquisitiveness, being the core concept of INQ, and question raising, characterized in IEL by means of the concepts of question evocation and erotetic implication. We consider the basic system InqB of INQ, remain at the propositional level and show, inter alia, that: a disjunction of all the direct answers to an evoked question is always inquisitive; a (...) formula is inquisitive if, and only if it evokes a yes–no question whose affirmative answer expresses a possibility for the formula; inquisitive formulas evoke questions whose direct answers express all the possibilities for the formulas, and each question erotetically implies a question whose direct answers express the possibilities for the direct answers to the implying question. One of the most influential views in privacy scholarship is that privacy protects individual autonomy. On the early liberal view, the exercise of autonomy requires detachment from social and political life and privacy facilitates it. This view of privacy still informs current legal and political practice. As this view of privacy presupposes a tension between privacy and society, it is responsible for the underrating of privacy in legal and political practice. Over the last decades, liberal reflection on autonomy has shifted (...) from the early liberal understanding of autonomy as calling for detachment from social life to the idea of autonomy as socially embedded. This development has brought about a corresponding adjustment in the liberal concept of privacy: privacy has come to be seen as a social rather than merely an individual interest. The social turn in thinking about privacy has gone a long way to change the problematic image of privacy in legal and political practice. It has not gone far enough, however, to draw conclusions regarding the political relevance of privacy. I argue that we should understand autonomy as politically embedded. Revised along these lines, privacy has a political value: when we claim privacy, we do not make a claim to withdraw from political life, but rather make a claim to protect certain forms of political engagement. Pythagorean Women Philosophers argues for a rewriting of Greek philosophical history so as to include female intellectuals. Dutsch presents testimonies regarding the role of women in the Pythagorean school as demonstrating their active contribution to the philosophical tradition.

Much of the debate concerning political obligation deals with the question of which, if any, moral principles could make obedience to the directives of the government a matter of obligation. What makes political obligation political has not received attention in the literature on the topic. In this article I argue that the lack of systematic reflection on what makes political obligation political is responsible for the failure of a number of influential theories of political obligation. I demonstrate this failure using (...) the consent theory of political obligation as my major example. I conclude my analysis by formulating some positive conditions that a successful principle of political obligation should satisfy. (shrink)

The associative argument for political obligation has taken an important place in the debate on political obligation. Proponents of this view argue that an obligation to obey the government arises out of ties of affiliation among individuals who share the same citizenship. According to them, relationships between compatriots constitute basic reasons for action in the same way in which relationships between family members or friends do. As critics point out, this account of the normative force of relationships has counterintuitive implications: (...) if relationships between people sharing the same citizenship make up basic reasons for action, then relationships between people sharing other attributes, for example, relationships between racists or sexists form basic reasons for action too. In this essay, I pursue a modified version of the associative approach that is not vulnerable to this objection. (shrink)
