Transition Probability (fidelity) for pairs of density operators can be defined as a “functor” in the hierarchy of “all” quantum systems and also within any quantum system. The Introduction of “amplitudes” for density operators allows for a more intuitive treatment of these quantities, also pointing to a natural parallel transport. The latter is governed by a remarkable gauge theory with strong relations to the Riemann-Bures metric.

This paper presents a comprehensive pragmatic theory of contrastive topic and its relation to focus in English. In discussing various constructions involving contrastive topics, it argues that they make reference to complex, hierarchical aspects of discourse structure. In this, it follows and spells out a proposal sketched in Roberts (1996, p. 121ff),using the formal tools found in Büring (1994,1997b). It improves on existing accounts in the accuracy with which it predicts the non-occurrence of the accent patterns associated with focus and (...) contrastive topic, and locates the analysis of contrastive topicswithin a broader picture of discourse and information structure. Situation semantics as conceived in Kratzer (1989) has been shown to be a valuable companion to the e-type pronoun analysis of donkey sentences (Heim 1990, and recently refined in Elbourne 2001b), and more generally binding out of DP (BOOD; Tomioka 1999; Büring 2001). The present paper proposes a fully compositional version of such a theory, which is designed to capture instances of crossover in BOOD.

This article explores whether political corporate social responsibility may be better understood through its inclusion into the realm of high politics instead of its current characterization as belonging to low politics. The key argument is that the growing role of private companies in the provision of security is too widespread and its implications are too important to be ignored by the PCSR literature. By extending the scope of its inquiry into high politics, the insights from PCSR research could enrich the (...) debates in several other social sciences that also study political roles of private companies. An interdisciplinary dialog about the numerous inroads of private companies into high politics could help the PCSR scholars in their quest to reach beyond an instrumental view of corporate politics. The effort to identify the neural substrate of episodic recall, though ambitious, lacks experimental support. By considering the data on c-fos activation by novel and familiar stimuli in recognition studies, we illustrate how inadequate experimental designs permit alternative interpretations. We stress that interpretation of c-fos expression changes should be supported by adequate recognition tests.

Bireylerin yabancı dil öğreniminde, yabancı dilde okuma becerilerini geliştirmek amacıyla bazı uygulamalar önerilir. Bunlardan biri, basitleştirilmiş kitaplardır. Bu çalışma, yabancı dil öğreniminde okuma becerisinin arttırılması için yapılan basitleştirilmiş okuma kitaplarının kullanımıyla ilgili önemli unsurları belirtmeyi ve bu tür kitapların kullanımına eleştirel bir bakış sunmayı hedeflemektedir. Bu çalışma, öncelikle basitleştirilmiş kitapların kullanımını tarihsel açıdan (...) ele almış, faydaları hakkında destekleyici ve karşıt görüşleri derlemiş, son olarak da basitleştirilmiş kitaplardan yapısal örnekler ile dil öğrenimi açısından sorgulama yapmıştır. Basitleştirilmiş kitaplar aracılığıyla, öğrencinin okuma becerisi ve yabancı dil öğrenmesinin gelişmesi düşünülse de, bu tür kitapların yabancı dil öğreniminde kullanımına temkinli bir şekilde yaklaşmak, kitapları seçerken içerik olarak dil edinimi ve kültürel duruş olup olmadığını gözden geçirmek gereklidir. Buna ek olarak, yabancı dil öğreniminde yapısal ve bağlamsal olarak bir kazanım olup olmadığı sorgulanmalıdır. Sonuç olarak, basitleştirilmiş olan edebi eserler yerine orijinallerin ve her seviyeye uygun farklı edebi metin türlerinin yabancı dilde okuma becerisini geliştirmede kullanılması önerilmektedir. Hyperbolic vectors are called gyrovectors. We show that the Bloch vector of quantum mechanics is a gyrovector. The Bures fidelity between two states of a qubit is generated by two Bloch vectors. Treating these as gyrovectors rather than vectors results in our novel expression for the Bures fidelity, expressed in terms of its two generating Bloch gyrovectors. Taming the Thomas precession of Einstein's special theory of relativity led to the advent of the theory of gyrogroups and (...) gyrovector spaces. Gyrovector spaces, in turn, form the setting for various models of the hyperbolic geometry of Bolyai and Lobachevski just as vector spaces form the setting for the standard model of Euclidean geometry. It is the recent advent of the theory of gyrogroups and gyrovector spaces that allows the Bures fidelity to be studied in its natural context, hyperbolic geometry, resulting in our new representation of the Bures fidelity, that reveals simplicity, elegance, and hyperbolic geometric significance. El proyecto de una filosofía de la historia y de la cultura propuesto por G. Vico en sus diversas obras resulta relevante para nosotros pues constituye un punto de referencia sugerente para proceder a la interpretación filosófica e ínter-disciplinaria de nuestras propias expresiones culturales.Como toda hermenéutica de la cultura, aquella que propone Vico presupone una determinada ·concepción de la verdad que constituye el hilo conductor que le da sentido a su obra. El presente artículo es un esbozo introductorio al esclarecimiento (...) de dicha concepción. Lo verdadero y lo hecho se convierten. Esto significa que la verdad como representación de los aspectos de la cosa es resultado de una operación de síntesis de lodado en la fantasía por intermedio del "ingenio". Este constituye una facultad que, aliado de la imaginación, posibilitan el conocimientohumano como saber siempre parcial y finito. El reconocimiento de dicha finitud anima la dinámica de la interpretación de aquello que esposible conocer del mundo histórico-cultural. (shrink)

Thus, Rawls works out an idea of public reason which allows citizens to argue about political matters and yet remaining divided in their comprehensive doctrines. On the other hand, African culture has (...) developed the practice of palaver as way of dealing with social and political questions of the community. Usually held under a tree, scholars believe that the palaver is the African version of deliberative democracy. In this article, I elaborate the two ideas and compare them in order to see whether they are completely opposite or whether they can enrich each other.
