Es geht den Lektüreeinflüssen in Tradition, Spiritualität und Begegnungen nach und untersucht dazu aktuelle Fragen um Glaube, Wissen und eine neue Phänomenologie. Ein literarisch intensiver und aus der rekonstruierten Bibliothek quellenerschlossener Bildungsgang wirkte auf die Frömmigkeitsentwicklung der späteren Karmelitin und befruchtete massgeblich ihre Denkwelt und mystisch eigene Position.

The article examines sin through the lens of forgetfulness, as both are phenomena situated between passivity and activity, and intricately linked in the biblical tradition. It shows how the propensity to forget God is rooted in a particular form of presence that is characteristic of YHWH. The narrative of the making of the golden calf is analysed for its potential to highlight the ‘predicament’ peculiar to the Jewish and Christian faiths: to seek a more palpable divine presence than that in (...) the word alone. The article explores this theme further by way of theologically juxtaposing the calf with the Agnus Dei and offering considerations on conscience, confession and the opacity of the Christian life. There has been much debate whether computers can be responsible. This question is usually discussed in terms of personhood and personal characteristics, which a computer may or may not possess. If a computer fulfils the conditions required for agency or personhood, then it can be responsible; otherwise not. This paper suggests a different approach. An analysis of the concept of responsibility shows that it is a social construct of ascription which is only viable in certain social contexts and which serves (...) particular social aims. If this is the main aspect of responsibility then the question whether computers can be responsible no longer hinges on the difficult problem of agency but on the possibly simpler question whether responsibility ascriptions to computers can fulfil social goals. The suggested solution to the question whether computers can be subjects of responsibility is the introduction of a new concept, called “quasi-responsibility” which will emphasise the social aim of responsibility ascription and which can be applied to computers. Für Kant spielt die Religion im Hinblick auf die moralische Lebensführung weder in geltungstheoretischer noch in motivationstheoretischer Hinsicht eine wesentliche Rolle. Deshalb ist er auch vom tendenziellen Ende der historischen Religionen überzeugt. Mit schonungsloser Kritik wendet sich Kant gegen den dogmatischen Bestand der Offenbarungsreligionen und gegen religiöse Praktiken, die er als „Afterdienst“ bzw. als „Wahnglauben“ brandmarkt. Aber schon die Zeitgenossen haben mit einiger Irritation zur Kenntnis genommen, dass Kant auf der anderen Seite den historischen Religionen für die Gegenwart noch die (...) nützliche Funktion eines ‚Vehikels‘ für die Etablierung eines moralischen „Religionsglaubens“ zuspricht. Bernd Dörflinger hat sich in seinen richtungsweisenden Studien die Aufgabe gestellt, im Rahmen sorgfältiger Analysen die Komplexität von Kants religionsphilosophischen Überlegungen herauszuarbeiten, zugleich aber zu zeigen, was diese im Kontext einer veränderten historischen Situation bedeuten, ohne theologischen Versuchen der Vereinnahmung anheim zu fallen. Taking account of Kant's unpublished mss., the author presents a close textual interpretation of Kant's logic of concepts.

The two main challenges of the theory of conceptual content presented by Robert Brandom in Making It Explicit are to account for a referential dimension of conceptual content and to account for the objectivity of conceptual norms. Brandom tries to meet both these challenges in chapter 8 of his book. I argue that the accounts presented there can only be understood if seen against the background of Brandom's theory of communication developed in chapter 7. This theory is motivated by the (...) well-known problem that semantic holism threatens the possibility of communication because it has the consequence that words mean different things in different mouths. Brandom offers a solution to this problem in terms of what he calls recurrence commitments. I show that chapter 8 of Making It Explicit should be understood as arguing that a practice that includes acknowledging interpersonal recurrence commitments institutes both conceptual contents with a referential dimension and objective conceptual norms. I close by raising the objection that Brandom's argument can only show that conceptual norms are communally shared and not that they are objective. I propose an emendation of this argument, having recourse to a practice Brandom refers to as rational rectification in his new book Between Saying and Doing. (shrink)

This book is a ricochet against mainstream physics. It sprang out of the idea that outer symmetries of space-time are the same as inner symmetries of matter. In other words, the standard model of physics is a space-time group. This book is about structures and phenomena that are lying hidden underneath the surface of space-time. It begins with a few biographic events, Majoranas legacy, the philosophy of Gerhard Frey and some related anthropological topics which have to do with high energy (...) physics. It continues with a reconstruction of the theorem by Banach and Tarski in Minkowski space. We are making acquaintance with the standard model as a property of space-time. So we are challenging quite unusual actions such as penetration of quarks by a probe. We propose to apply a penetrating function D. Then, measure and basis are connected with the axiom of choice. In this paper, I approach the power of digital platforms by using the republican concept of domination. More specifically, I argue that the traditional, agent-relative interpretation of domination, in the case of digital domination, is best supplemented by a more radical version, on which republicans ought to give priority to structural elements. I show how radical republicanism draws attention to (1) the economic rationales and the socio-technical infrastructures that underlie and support digital platforms and to (2) the forms of influence (...) that are directed at cognitive dimensions, such as habituation and routinisation, which are particularly relevant for the power of digital platforms. These insights also imply that republicans have reason to favour a more structural response to digital platforms over more direct and individualised forms of control that fit with a ‘standard’ republican approach, such as securing exit options and requiring user consent. Attempts to explain the origin of macroevolutionary innovations have been only partially successful. Here it is proposed that the patterns of major evolutionary transitions have to be understood first, before it is possible to further analyse the forces behind the process. The hypothesis is that major evolutionary innovations are characterized by an increase in organismal autonomy, in the sense of emancipation from the environment. After a brief overview of the literature on this subject, increasing autonomy is defined as the evolutionary (...) shift in the individual system–environment relationship, such that the direct influences of the environment are gradually reduced and a stabilization of self-referential, intrinsic functions within the system is generated. This is described as relative autonomy because numerous interconnections with the environment and dependencies upon it are retained. Features of increasing autonomy are spatial separations, an increase in homeostatic functions and in body size, internalizations and an increase in physiological and behavioral flexibility. It is described how these features are present in different combinations in the major evolutionary transitions of metazoans and, consequently, how they should be taken into consideration when evolutionary innovations are studied. The hypothesis contributes to a reconsideration of the relationship between organisms and their environment. (shrink)

Immanuel Kants "Grundlegung" ist ohne Zweifel einer der bedeutendsten Texte der abendlandischen Moralphilosophie. Sie gilt mitunter allerdings auch als einer der "dunkelsten" Texte Kants - wenn nicht sogar der abendlandischen Philosophie uberhaupt. Der Kommentar macht deutlich, dass die vorgebliche Dunkelheit im Wesentlichen der Tatsache geschuldet ist, dass der Text seit langem im Schatten der falschen Annahme gelesen wird, Kant wolle eine Begrundung (oder Rechtfertigung) des Sittengesetzes liefern, um damit den moralischen Skeptizismus abzuwehren. Liest man ihn stattdessen unter der (auch historisch (...) angemesseneren) Perspektive, dass Kant mit dem kategorischen Imperativ 'nur' eine neue Formel fur das Prinzip der allgemein im Schwange gehenden Sittlichkeit 'angeben und rechtfertigen' will, um so den moralischen Eudaimonismus durch eine Moral der Autonomie zu ersetzen - dann zeigt sich, dass der Text nicht bloss ein philosophisches, sondern zugleich ein schriftstellerisches Meisterwerk ist. Modern biology is ambivalent about the notion of evolutionary progress. Although most evolutionists imply in their writings that they still understand large-scale macroevolution as a somewhat progressive process, the use of the term “progress” is increasingly criticized and avoided. The paper shows that this ambivalence has a long history and results mainly from three problems: (1) The term “progress” carries historical, theoretical and social implications which are not congruent with modern knowledge of the course of evolution; (2) An incongruence exists (...) between the notion of progress and Darwin’s theory of selection; (3) It is still not possible to give more than a rudimentary definition of the general patterns that were generated during the macroevolution of organisms. The paper consists of two parts: the first is a historical overview of the roots of the term “progress” in evolutionary biology, the second discusses epistemological, ontological and empirical problems. It is stated that the term has so far served as a metaphor for general patterns generated amongst organisms during evolution. It is proposed that a reformulation is needed to eliminate historically imported implications and that it is necessary to develop a concept for an appropriate empirical description of macroevolutionary patterns. This is the third way between, on the one hand, using the term indiscriminately and, on the other hand, ignoring the general patterns that evolution has produced. (shrink)

Trustful interaction serves the interests of those involved. Thus, one could reason that trust itself may be analyzed as part of rational, goaloriented action. In contrast, common sense tells us that trust is an emotion and is, therefore, independent of rational deliberation to some extent. I will argue that we are right in trusting our common sense. My argument is conceptual in nature, referring to the common distinction between trust and pure reliance. An emotional attitude may be understood as some (...) general pattern in the way the world or some part of the world is perceived by an individual. Trust may be characterized by such a pattern. I shall focus on two central features of a trusting attitude. First, trust involves a participant attitude (Strawson) toward the person being trusted. Second, a situation of trust is perceived by a trusting person as one in which shared values or norms motivate both his own actions as well as those of the person being trusted. As an emotional attitude, trust is, to some extent, independent of objective information. It determines what a trusting person will believe and how various outcomes are evaluated. Hence, trust is quite different from rational belief and the problem with trust is not adequately met in minimizing risk by supplying extensive information or some mechanism of sanctioning. Trust is an attitude that enables us to cope with risk in a certain way. If we want to promote trustful interaction, we must form our institutions in ways that allow individuals to experience their interest and values as shared and, thus, to develop a trusting attitude. Die nichtideale Theorie, wie Rawls sie versteht, soll uns Wege zur vollen Verwirklichung der Gerechtigkeit aufzeigen, die moralisch zulässig, politisch möglich und wahrscheinlich wirksam sein würden. Ich übertrage diese Idee auf das von Rawls gemiedene Gebiet einer Gerechtigkeit für Tiere. Diese haben, soweit sie Unterworfene der von uns verantworteten sozialen Grundstrukturen sind, einen gültigen Anspruch auf gleichberechtigte Beachtung bei der Gemeinwohlermittlung und sollten darum auch als politische Mitglieder unserer Gemeinwesen gelten. Im Zuge einer immanenten Kritik an einem verwandten Vorschlag Robert (...) Garners möchte ich zeigen, dass die beste nichtideale Theorie in einem radikalisierten Tierschutzverständnis besteht. Abschließend antworte ich auf zwei Einwände, die Peter Niesen gegen eine frühere Fassung meiner nichtidealen Theorie erhoben hat. (shrink)

Das Verbot, andere Menschen zu töten, ist gewiss eine zentrale und unverzichtbare Norm. Wer wollte schon in der ständigen Furcht leben, gewaltsam und gegen seinen Willen ums Leben gebracht zu werden? Das LebenRecht(e) (s. a. Menschenrechte, Grundrechte)auf Leben, Lebensrecht ist ein schlechthin grundlegendes Schutzgut, weil es die Bedingung der Möglichkeit aller Empfindungen, Wahrnehmungen, Gedanken und Handlungen ist. Und Menschen ziehen normalerweise die Fortsetzung ihres Lebens einer Lebensverkürzung vor.

Das Leib-Seele-Problem lasst sich im Rahmen der klassischen ontologischen Positionen - Materialismus, Dualismus, Idealismus - nicht befriedigend losen. Es wird das Verhaltnis zwischen Aussen- und Bewusstseinswirklichkeit falsch aufgefasst, was zu einer falschen Konzeption der ontologischen Grundstruktur des Wirklichen Anlass gibt. Das Kernproblem liegt darin, dass vor allem materialistische und dualistische Denkgebaude auf einem naiv-realistischen Fundament beruhen, das nicht radikal uberwunden wird. Dies fuhrt zu etlichen philosophischen Ungereimtheiten, was in der vorliegenden Arbeit im Detail nachgewiesen wird. Dadurch wird auch die Basis (...) fur den metaphysischen Dualismus geschaffen, in dessen Rahmen das Leib-Seele-Problem zumindest prinzipiell losbar ist.". (shrink)

Having evolved as an ethical top priority issue for the churches within less than a decade, yet »homosexuality« shares in its more recent treatment some of the older debate's perplexities. The lack of distinguishing theologically between »nature« and »creation« lies at the heart of a problematic focus on the question of the coming into being of homosexuality, as well as for a rather uncritical use of the notion of its »irreversibility« as a dogmatic starting point for further argument. lnstead a (...) prior task in terms of ethical judgement yet hardly begun must be to do justice to the varity of personal witness of faith such as how people experience Iiberation, some towards the acceptance of their homosexual orientation and others as a process of change. This volume describes features of biological autonomy and integrates them into the recent discussion of factors in evolution. In recent years ideas about major transitions in evolution are undergoing a revolutionary change. They include questions about the origin of evolutionary innovation, their genetic and epigenetic background, the role of the phenotype, and of changes in ontogenetic pathways. In the present book, it is argued that it is likewise necessary to question the properties of these innovations and what was qualitatively generated (...) during the macroevolutionary transitions. The author states that a recurring central aspect of macroevolutionary innovations is an increase in individual organismal autonomy whereby it is emancipated from the environment with changes in its capacity for flexibility, self-regulation and self-control of behavior. The first chapters define the concept of autonomy and examine its history and its epistemological context. Later chapters demonstrate how changes in autonomy took place during the major evolutionary transitions and investigate the generation of organs and physiological systems. They synthesize material from various disciplines including zoology, comparative physiology, morphology, molecular biology, neurobiology and ethology. It is argued that the concept is also relevant for understanding the relation of the biological evolution of man to his cultural abilities. Finally the relation of autonomy to adaptation, niche construction, phenotypic plasticity and other factors and patterns in evolution is discussed. The text has a clear perspective from the context of systems biology, arguing that the generation of biological autonomy must be interpreted within an integrative systems approach. (shrink)

The ethics of artificial intelligence is a widely discussed topic. There are numerous initiatives that aim to develop the principles and guidance to ensure that the development, deployment and use of AI are ethically acceptable. What is generally unclear is how organisations that make use of AI understand and address these ethical issues in practice. While there is an abundance of conceptual work on AI ethics, empirical insights are rare and often anecdotal. This paper fills the gap in our current (...) understanding of how organisations deal with AI ethics by presenting empirical findings collected using a set of ten case studies and providing an account of the cross-case analysis. The paper reviews the discussion of ethical issues of AI as well as mitigation strategies that have been proposed in the literature. Using this background, the cross-case analysis categorises the organisational responses that were observed in practice. The discussion shows that organisations are highly aware of the AI ethics debate and keen to engage with ethical issues proactively. However, they make use of only a relatively small subsection of the mitigation strategies proposed in the literature. These insights are of importance to organisations deploying or using AI, to the academic AI ethics debate, but maybe most valuable to policymakers involved in the current debate about suitable policy developments to address the ethical issues raised by AI.
