Emotive-factive predicates, such as surprise or be happy, are a source of empirical and theoretical puzzles in the literature on embedded questions. Although they embed wh-questions, they seem not to embed whether-questions. They have complex interactions with negative polarity items such as any or even, and they have been argued to preferentially give rise to weakly exhaustive readings with embedded questions. We offer an empirical overview of the situation in three experiments collecting acceptability judgments, monotonicity judgments, and truth-value judgments. The (...) results straightforwardly confirm the special selectional properties of emotive-factive predicates. More interestingly, they reveal the existence of strongly exhaustive readings for surprise. The results also suggest that the special properties of emotive-factives cannot be solely explained by their monotonicity profiles, because they were not found to differ from the profiles of other responsive predicates. Questions embedded under responsive predicates and definite descriptions both give rise to a variety of phenomena which can be grouped under the term plurality effects: quantificational variability, cumulativity, and homogeneity effects. This similarity has not gone unnoticed, and many proposals have taken inspiration in theories of definite plurals to account for these effects with embedded questions. Recently these phenomena have received less attention, as the field has focused on the so-called intermediate exhaustive reading of embedded questions instead, after Spector called (...) into question the traditional dichotomy between weak and strong exhaustive readings. As a result, the intermediate exhaustive reading has been accounted for at the expense of empirical coverage in other areas. In this paper, I propose a modular theory which derives the currently much discussed exhaustive readings without giving up the rich semantics necessary to account for plurality effects. My account of quantificational variability, cumulativity, and homogeneity effects builds on recent work on these phenomena in the nominal domain by adopting a categorial approach to embedded questions, while the strong and intermediate exhaustive readings are implemented using an independent strengthening mechanism suggested in Klinedinst and Rothschild :1–23, 2011). The resulting theory not only recovers important results on plurality effects; it offers new, simple solutions for some puzzles presented in George :166–177, 2013) and Paillé and Schwarz Proceedings of WCCFL 36, vol 36, Cascadilla Proceedings Project, Somerville, 2018), naturally derives readings that had been postulated in previous literature, makes correct predictions in many unexplored cases, and is compatible with recent results in psycholinguistics. In the last sections I justify my assumptions and show how possible limitations I inherit from the theories I build on can be accommodated under standard assumptions. (shrink)

The aim of this present study is to investigate the influence of three learning contexts on the development of motor creativity of young footballers. In team sport, creativity is a fundamental issue because it allows players to adapt in an environment of high social uncertainty. To carry out this work, we suggest a method for assessing motor creativity into ecological situations based on the analysis of praxical communications. Creativity originates from an interaction between divergence and convergence. In our case, the (...) number of communications and the diversity of updated communications are our divergence indicators. Convergence, understood as the ability to make good decisions, is assessed by two expert judges. Sixty boys’ football players coming from three football clubs participated in this research. The study lasted 2 years. Each year, a team of 10 players from each club participated in the research twice a week for 32 weeks, these groups attended different training sessions: the control group followed a classical learning; the decoding group attended training focused on learning the praxemes of football; the traditional sporting games group followed a training session that was jointly focused on praxemes and the practice of traditional sporting games. The motor creativity of players and groups was assessed both at the beginning and at the end of the year during football matches. Compared to the control group, in the post-test, the group with the highest fluidity is the decoding group and the one with the highest fluidity is the traditional sporting games group. The latter group is also the one with the best convergence. The results showed that traditional games can help develop players’ creative abilities. This research invites us to investigate the complementarity between the different offered training. (shrink)

Des deux Essais réunis dans ce volume, l'un, Introduction à la lecture de Platon, présente, dans une première partie, une analyse de la composition subtile et raffinée du dialogue socratique : œuvre dramatique qui présuppose la présence d'un personnage n'y figurant pas, celle du lecteur-auditeur, auquel est dévolu le rôle de comprendre le sens caché du débat et d'en tirer les conclusions. Conclusions que Socrate, délibérément, évite de formuler, mais qui y sont nécessairement impliquées. Ce que l'auteur démontre en prenant (...) comme exemples le Ménon, le Protagoras et le Théétète. La deuxième partie de l'Introduction offre une étude de La République en soulignant l'actualité paradoxale des problèmes fondamentaux qui y sont discutés par Platon. Faisant suite à l'Introduction, les Entretiens sur Descartes reproduisent les conférences données par l'auteur à l'Université du Caire lors du tricentenaire du Discours de la méthode. Ces Entretiens développent une conception de la philosophie de Descartes comme catharsis spirituelle et intellectuelle qui ouvre à l'homme la voie vers la vérité, et vers Dieu. Descartes échappe ainsi au scepticisme et au désarroi qui ont suivi le bouillonnement confus de la Renaissance. La science cartésienne, toute périmée qu'elle soit, est présentée comme un effort prodigieux pour réaliser l'idéal - ou le rêve - de la mathématisation totale de l'Univers, ressuscité, de nos jours par Einstein. El objetivo principal de este artículo es defender, de acuerdo con A. John Simmons, un punto de vista que, normativamente, propone el consentimiento como condición necesaria de legitimidad y fundamento de la obligación política. Pero, descriptivamente, entiende que tal consentimiento, en tanto que autorización personal y voluntaria, todavía no ha tenido lugar en ninguna sociedad, ni siquiera democrática.

En el presente análisis se exponen las bases del clásico debate entre Richard Clark y Robert Kozma, autores reconocidos en el campo de Tecnología Instruccional y la Educación a Distancia por la relevancia de sus aportaciones; a partir del argumento inicial presentado por Richard Clark en 1983 contenido en su artículo denominado Reconsidering research on learning from media; dónde describe evidencias suficientes que apoyan su opinión respecto a que los medios instruccionales no ejercen influencia alguna en el nivel de (...) aprovechamiento de los estudiantes durante el proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje.Palabras claves. El presente ensayo se propone poner en duda la oportunidad de guiarnos por sueños y utopías, y construir en cambio “proyectos autónomos” que permitan avanzar hacia un sueño común que nos movilice, partiendo de la convicción de que ya estamos movilizados y articulados, pues existe una utopía que, aunque irrealizable, nos hace ilusionarnos con la libertad. Esta noción es la del progreso, y es de esta utopía invisible de la que debemos librarnos. En su desarrollo expone tres tesis sobre la (...) utopía, para concluir con una regla práctica de reconocimiento de las utopías negativas (distopías) que nos hubiera puesto a salvo de muchas de nuestras actuales pesadillas; y postula finalmente una nueva palabra, aún por acuñar, que signifique `el buen momento'. El artículo expone la contraposición entre dos posiciones filosóficas (deconstrucción y reconstrucción), dos autores (Jacques Derrida, Jean Luc Ferry) y dos libros (Apprendre à vivre enfin, Apprendre à vivre). En última instancia, dos formas de entender las relaciones entre filosofía y vida. Más allá del logocentrismo, objeto de la deconstrucción, el biocentrismo es el eje de la tarea de reconstrucción de una filosofía articulada como ontología o teoría de lo real, filosofía moral o teoría de la justicia y sabiduría o (...) teoría de la salvación.
