Increasingly, frontiers between business and philanthropy seem to be blurred. Reward-Based Crowdfunding platforms contribute to this blurring of lines since they propose funders to support both for-profit and philanthropic projects. Our empirical paper explores the case of Ulule, the leading crowdfunding platform in Europe. Our results, based on a statistical analysis of more than 3000 projects, show that crowdfunding platforms foster specific kinds of relationships relying on reciprocal giving, beyond the usual opposition between altruistic and selfish motivations. We use the (...) work of Marcel Mauss to account for this process of reciprocal giving, and we argue that Maussian theory of gift can be used more generally to describe funding activities in the context of early stage entrepreneurship. Droit et morale Sous la direction de Dominique Bureau, France Drummond et Dominique Fenouillet Véritable « pont aux ânes de la pédagogie juridique », la question des relations qu'entretiennent Droit et Morale appelle une réponse doctrinale presque invariable: la séparation de principe n'exclurait pas l'influence réciproque. Le droit contemporain semble pourtant traversé par deux courants a priori antinomiques: ici, la référence morale est invoquée comme une sorte de « tabou » qui justifierait le retrait du droit, alors que, là, (...) elle est appelée en renfort pour justifier telle solution ou fonder telle réforme. C'est de cette étrange coexistence du « retour offensif » et du « tabou » qu'est née l'idée d'organiser un colloque sur le thème « Droit et Morale. Aspects contemporains » en privilégiant une approche interdisciplinaire. Le 4 juin 2010, dans le cadre des journées d'étude qu'il consacre au pluralisme, le Laboratoire de sociologie juridique de l'Université Paris II accueillait donc les réflexions croisées d'Olivier Descamps, Dominique Fenouillet, Michel Germain, Valérie Malabat, Horatia Muir Watt, Cécile Pérès, Marc Pichard, Jean-Emmanuel Ray et Jean-Louis Sourioux. L'ouvrage ici présenté s'est enrichi des contributions supplémentaires d'Éric Martin-Hocquenghem et de Mustapha Mekki. Nous vivons l'ère logique, même si nous en sommes encore que dans les tout premiers temps de cet âge nouveau qui s'inscrit sous le signe du mariage de l'homme avec la machine - la machine qui amplifie le cerveau, alors que les engins et les appareils ne font que prolonger les bras et les sens. Pour pénétrer l'extraordinaire complexité des choses, l'homme du XXe siècle a créé la logique moderne, qui appréhende tout. Or, la logique mathématique est automatisable ; la (...) machine est le produit de cette logique, qu'elle nourrit à son tour. La clef du progrès humain, dans tous les domaines (matériel, social, économique), réside dans la mise en oeuvre de ces instruments, rapides, sûrs, qui nient les dogmes, les religions, la politique et corrigent les distorsions de l'affectivité. Algèbre de Boole, programmation linéaire, mécanismes d'instauration et d'apprentissage, automation analogique et digitale, modèles d'objectivité et simulation de structure, dynamique des groupes, tout ce qu'il faut savoir en 1969 pour comprendre 1970 se trouve ici exposé avec clarté. Les mécanismes de l'auto-adaptation, le monde étonnant de la vitesse qui est celui de l'électronique des machines, les modèles cybernétiques, sont analysés aussi bien que la codification qui sert de langage à la logique digitale et que le rôle de la programmation dans la société de demain. Le livre critique les sociétés en place sous l'angle de la libre circulation des informations et s'achève dans la prospective d'une société qui, ayant vaincu ses dogmes et ses croyances, a acquis le réflexe de corriger ses erreurs par des processus automatiques, ouvert la libre circulation aux données et aux ordres le long d'un réseau sans filtres et sans limitations - donc sans frontières : elle est devenue réllement auto-adaptative ; elle peut alors s'engager dans la voie du progrès véritable, des hiérarchies mobiles, de la récession de l'autorité de l'État, de réintroduire dans la vie de cette réalité unique qu'est l'individu, le jeu, le risque et l'aventure individuelle. Simplement, au modèle ancien du risque hasardeux on substituera le modèle moderne de l'expérience calculée, profitable à l'espèce. Le voyage dans la lune est peut-être le premier de ces échanges des rêves. L'ère logique est le livre d'un ingénieur qui vit quotidiennement les choses de la logique, une sorte d'explication du monde à l'usage de ceux qui refusent de se laisser fasciner par le spectre d'un nouveau Moyen Âge. C'est un livre libre et libérateur, plein d'éclats, d'humeur et de bonne humeur, l'œuvre d'un homme qui s'indigne, mais aussi qui offre l'espoir d'un humanisme accordé au progrès scientifique, à la contagion technique. Le conflit social autour de la réforme du régime d'assurance chômage des intermittents du spectacle a été marqué par son intensité et par sa durée. La thèse défendue ici est que la maîtrise du temps constitue l’un des enjeux majeurs de ce conflit. L'affrontement sur le terrain économique de la régulation de l'emploi et de l'industrie culturelle s'est doublé de l'affrontement sur le temps. La question du temps ne se limite pas à la régulation du temps de travail, elle concerne (...) la maîtrise du temps et les « formes de vie » auxquelles les individus aspirent. Les deux plans de l'emploi et du temps ne sont pas exclusifs l’un de l’autre, ils coexistent, mais le conflit autour de la maîtrise du temps est relativement imperceptible. Background: The COVID-19 crisis has had a considerable mental health impact on healthcare workers. High levels of psychological distress are expected to have a significant impact on healthcare systems, warranting the need for evidence-based psychological interventions targeting stress and fostering resilience in this population. Online cognitive behavioral therapy has proved to be effective in targeting stress and promoting resilience. However, online CBT programs targeting stress in healthcare workers are lacking.Objective: The aim of our study is to evaluate the feasibility and (...) acceptability of an internet-based CBT intervention, the My Health Too program we developed during the first COVID-19 epidemic peak in France.Methods: We recruited 10 participants among Alsace region hospital staff during the first peak of the pandemic in France. They were given 1 week to test the website and were then asked to answer an internet survey and a semi-structured phone interview.Results: We conducted a thematic analysis of the content from the phone interviews. Major themes were identified, discussed and coded: the technical aspects, the content of the website and its impact on participants’ emotions and everyday life. Overall, the participants reported finding the website easy to use and interactive. They described the resources as easy to understand, readily usable, and useful in inducing calm and in helping them practice self-compassion.Conclusion: Our results suggest that the My Health Too online CBT program is highly feasible and acceptable to healthcare workers during the highly stressful times of the pandemic peak. The feedback provided helped to improve the program whose efficacy is to be tested. (shrink)

Theiler's virus is a picornavirus of mouse which causes an acute encephalomyelitis followed by a persistent infection of the white matter resulting in chronic inflammation and demyelination. This disease has been studied as a model for multiple sclerosis. Inbred strains of mice are either resistant--they clear the infection after the acute encephalomyelitis--or susceptible to persistent infection and demyelination. Susceptibility is a polygenic trait which has been analyzed using methods of association with “candidate” genes, and linkage analysis after a complete genome (...) scan. The H-2Db gene is responsible for an efficient CTL response which makes some strains resistant. Non H-2 genes responsible for the susceptibility of other strains have been mapped by linkage analysis to the Ifng and, possibly, the Mbp loci. The analysis of a set of congenic mice ruled out the possiblity that the relevant gene codes for interferon gamma, and showed that the region around Ifngprobably contains two susceptibility genes. The analysis of mutant mice showed further that the Mbp gene, which codes for the myelin basic protein, has a major effect on viral persistence. Although the quality and effectiveness of mental health treatments and services have improved greatly over the past 50 years, therapeutic revolutions in psychiatry have not yet been able to reduce stigma. Stigma is a risk factor leading to negative mental health outcomes. It is responsible for treatment seeking delays and reduces the likelihood that a mentally ill patient will receive adequate care. The consequences of stigma are preventable. We argue that individual attention should be provided to patients when dealing with stigma. Also, in order to deal with the impact of stigma on an individual basis, it needs to be assessed during routine clinical examinations, quantified and followed up to observe whether or not treatment can reduce its impact. A patient-centric anti-stigma programme that delivers the above is urgently needed. To this end, this review explores the experiences, treatment barriers and consequences due (...) to stigma. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the quality of the sibling relationship moderates the association between parental psychological distress and child maladjustment. We extended previous literature by studying mothers and fathers separately and by including an observational measure of the quality of the sibling relationship. Participants were 52 two-parent families from a community sample who had at least two children living at home. Only one child was targeted for the study and studied in relation to his/her siblings. (...) Mothers and fathers completed a self-reported questionnaire on their psychological distress and individually assessed their child’s social-emotional maladjustment. The targeted child’s interactions with his/her siblings were observed by independent judges during a home-visit. Results indicate that both maternal and paternal psychological distress are significant predictors of child social-emotional maladjustment. Moderation analyses reveal that children of distressed fathers are at lower risk of social-emotional maladjustment when they engage in highly positive interactions with their siblings. Post hoc analyses suggest that only sibling empathy is a significant moderator of the association between paternal psychological distress and child maladjustment. The results of this study provide further evidence of the influence that fathers have in their child’s development and highlight the importance of using a systemic family approach to promote children’s social-emotional adaptation in the context of parental distress. Generalized anxiety disorder is under-treated yet prevalent among young adults. Identifying early risk factors for GAD would contribute to its etiological model and identify potential targets for intervention. Insecure attachment patterns, specifically ambivalent and disorganized, have long been proposed as childhood risk factors for GAD. Similarly, childhood behavioral inhibition has been consistently associated with anxiety disorders in adulthood, including GAD. Intolerance of uncertainty, the tendency to react negatively to uncertain situations, has also been shown to be a crucial component of (...) GAD. Furthermore, maternal anxiety is an important feature of developmental models of anxiety including GAD. Yet, to date, no study has examined, within a comprehensive model, how attachment and behavioral inhibition in childhood, maternal anxiety in adolescence, and IU in emerging adulthood contribute to GAD in adulthood. The present study thus examines these links using a longitudinal design with 62 Canadian participants and their mothers. At age 6, participants' attachment and behavioral inhibition were assessed observationally. Maternal anxiety was measured when participants were 14 years of age. IU and GAD were assessed when participants were 21 and 23 years of age, respectively. Structural equation modeling showed that IU mediates the relationships between behavioral inhibition and GAD, while controlling for maternal anxiety. Ambivalent and disorganized-controlling attachment patterns are also indirectly associated with increased GAD symptoms via greater IU scores. Furthermore, a direct and positive effect of behaviorally disorganized attachment was found on GAD symptoms. This longitudinal study supports integrating attachment, behavioral inhibition, and IU in a model of GAD. (shrink)

BackgroundInaccurate, false or incomplete research publications may mislead readers including researchers and decision-makers. It is therefore important that such problems are identified and rectified promptly. This usually involves collaboration between the research institutions and academic journals involved, but these interactions can be problematic.MethodsThese recommendations were developed following discussions at World Conferences on Research Integrity in 2013 and 2017, and at a specially convened 3-day workshop in 2016 involving participants from 7 countries with expertise in publication ethics and research integrity. The (...) recommendations aim to address issues surrounding cooperation and liaison between institutions and journals about possible and actual problems with the integrity of reported research arising before and after publication.ResultsThe main recommendations are that research institutions should: develop mechanisms for assessing the integrity of reported research that are distinct from processes to determine whether individual researchers have committed misconduct;release relevant sections of reports of research integrity or misconduct investigations to all journals that have published research that was investigated;take responsibility for research performed under their auspices regardless of whether the researcher still works at that institution or how long ago the work was done;work with funders to ensure essential research data is retained for at least 10 years.Journals should: respond to institutions about research integrity cases in a timely manner;have criteria for determining whether, and what type of, information and evidence relating to the integrity of research reports should be passed on to institutions;pass on research integrity concerns to institutions, regardless of whether they intend to accept the work for publication;retain peer review records for at least 10 years to enable the investigation of peer review manipulation or other inappropriate behaviour by authors or reviewers.ConclusionsVarious difficulties can prevent effective cooperation between academic journals and research institutions about research integrity concerns and hinder the correction of the research record if problems are discovered. While the issues and their solutions may vary across different settings, we encourage research institutions, journals and funders to consider how they might improve future collaboration and cooperation on research integrity cases. Ce chapitre présente le projet « Interphonologie du français contemporain » (IPFC), qui vise à constituer et analyser une large base de données de français langue étrangère produit par des apprenants de diverses L1. Nous illustrons ensuite la méthodologie adoptée dans le projet à travers le phénomène de la liaison. Après avoir exposé les enjeux de la liaison pour le français L2, nous présentons une étude préliminaire des réalisations de liaisons par des apprenants hispanophones et japonophones en lecture (...) de texte et montrons en quoi le projet IPFC est susceptible de fournir des données diversifiées en termes d’apprenants et de tâches, ce qui devrait, à terme, permettre un renouvellement des données pour l’enseignement de la liaison en français L2. Descartes lui permet d acceder a elle-meme, explicitant dans ses lettres non plus la notion de dualisme mais celle d union de l ame avec le corps, montrant dans quel registre penser le - vrai homme -.Par leur honnetete intellectuelle et le lien transferentiel qui s etablit, ils donnent acces a certains mecanismes des passions, abordent la complexite des liens intersubjectifs.Elisabeth va conduire Descartes a elaborer sa theorie des passions en prenant appui sur le vecu; leur union epistolaire donnera naissance au traite des "Passions de l ame."". This article addresses the issue of realism in relationship to contemporary serial fiction. Drawing on The Bureau, it argues that spy TV series are “realistic” not because they correspond to reality but because of their impact on reality. It begins by giving an overview of the many ways in which “realism,” in the ordinary sense of a resemblance with reality, served as the working framework for The Bureau’s team. It then identifies three distinct types of realisms in the (...) series. The first is a “fictional realism,” namely the ability of The Bureau to conform to the aesthetic and narrative conventions of realistic fictions. The second type of realism, which I qualify as “ordinary,” refers to the possibilities offered by the show’s aesthetics and the enmeshment of The Bureau with viewers’ ordinary experience. The third type of “performative realism” refers to the series’ impact on shared representations and reality. By providing a common language about the secret activities of the state, The Bureau has gone from being a framed version of reality to being one of the defining frameworks through which state secrecy is experienced both individually and collectively, by insiders and the public at large. Nous rappelons ici la place que Locke accorde à la liaison des idées dans la connaissance, et montrons comment l’auteur de l’Essai en vient à définir la raison, non pas comme raisonnement qui tiendrait ses règles toutes faites de la syllogistique, mais comme faculté au travail examinant les liaisons dans les idées singulières. C’est l’occasion de préciser les rapports entre liaison et association, qui ne s’opposent pas chez Locke comme un lien objectif à un lien purement subjectif entre (...) les idées. En effet, l’association est un régime normal de l’esprit même si elle a parfois des conséquences pathologiques. Par ailleurs, Locke donne toute leur place dans la connaissance aux connexions probables qui ne sont pourtant pas nécessairement fondées sur des raisons objectives (ex. : certitude morale). Enfin, la liaison des idées provoque, tout autant que l’association, des habitudes de l’esprit et il faut donc comprendre ce qui caractérise ces bonnes habitudes de l’esprit. Dans ces conditions, ce n’est pas du côté de l’objet connu, mais du sujet raisonnable que Locke pense les différences subtiles entre liaison et association, comme deux régimes de l’esprit : l’individu qui connaît n’est pas celui qui évite toute association d’idées, mais celui qui n’y arrête pas l’activité de son esprit, qui développe des habitudes d’examen et de critique, ce que ne fait pas l’homme dont l’esprit est offusqué par des associations d’idées devenues préjugés qui entravent son activité rationnelle. Créée par Éric Rochant, Le Bureau des légendes (Canal +, 2015-2020) explore le monde du renseignement en décrivant le travail du service des agents clandestins de la DGSE. Face aux incertitudes et aux complexités géopolitiques du monde contemporain, elle fait le choix d’une immersion au cœur du « renseignement humain ». Cet article envisage l’hypothèse selon laquelle une telle fiction permet de restaurer la confiance des spectateurs vis-à-vis de la capacité d’une démocratie à lutter contre ce qui la menace. (...) En plongeant son spectateur dans les coulisses du renseignement, en le familiarisant avec des personnages complexes, la série questionne la légitimité de la confiance qu’il est possible d’accorder à un service de renseignement. La faillibilité des agents, mise en scène de façon détaillée, réfléchie par la série elle-même, rassure parce qu’elle permet de comprendre et de partager une forme de vie spécifique qui est celle de l’action secrète. L’espionnage, le contre-espionnage et le contre-terrorisme apparaissent alors comme des pratiques reposant en dernier ressort, non pas sur une maîtrise absolue, mais sur la décision de faire confiance ou au contraire de se méfier. Mobilisant les recherches de la sociologie contemporaine à propos de la confiance (Giddens, 1994 et Luhmann 2006), il s’agit de décrire Le Bureau des légendes comme une fiction projetant sur nos écrans, la possibilité d’une restauration de la confiance ou pour le dire à la manière de Stanley Cavell, une issue possible au scepticisme. Choderlos de Laclos’s novel 'Les Liaisons dangereuses', first published in 1782, is regarded as one of the outstanding works of French literature. This article concerns a well known commentary by the twentieth-century writer André Malraux which, though often mentioned by critics, has seldom been studied in detail. The article argues that, while Malraux endorses the favourable modern assessments of 'Les Liaisons dangereuses', his analysis diverges in important respects from prevailing critical opinion. In particular, he regards the work as the commencement (...) of an important new stage in the French novel rather than, as often argued, the culmination of the existing libertine tradition. (shrink)

Cet article entend défaire une apparence de contradiction : comment Condillac, dans l’Essai sur l’origine des connaissances humaines, peut-il à la fois placer la sensation à l’origine de la connaissance et attribuer à la « liaison des idées » un statut principiel? Faut-il comprendre que la connaissance, loin de commencer avec des atomes sensibles reçus passivement par l’esprit, constitue d’emblée une activité? Après avoir écarté une telle lecture, l’article établit que la « liaison des idées » est certes (...) dérivée dans l’ordre de la connaissance, mais bel et bien première dans celui de l’expérience actuelle : l’analyse de l’entendement ne saurait remonter au-delà des idées liées – ce qui précède de telles liaisons, à savoir la perception réduite à sa dimension de sensation, est irrémédiablement perdu pour l’esprit. Non seulement il est impossible de remonter plus haut que les idées liées entre elles, mais ces liaisons d’idées sont toujours en même temps des liaisons de mots. Ce serait là faire de Dieu l’origine de la connaissance, si Condillac, comme Malebranche, faisait du langage un présent divin. Mais parce que l’arbitraire du signe est une institution humaine, c’est bien l’homme, et non Dieu, qui est in fine le créateur des idées. (shrink)

The book address three central areas of our life—care, love, and sex—from the perspective of virtue ethics. The first chapter on care argues that care should be considered a virtue and embedded within virtue ethics. The second chapter on love argues that romantic love is not a virtue as other philosophers have claimed, but that the virtues enable its best forms. And the third chapter on sex investigates Aristotelian temperance, and it argues that contrary to conservative views of the virtue (...) of temperance, there is a way to conceive of temperance that allows for sexual practices (e.g., promiscuity and casual sex) that are not confined to relationships or marriages. Malebranche précise et développe, dans La Recherche de la vérité, les suggestions cartésiennes concernant la liaison des idées et joue, ce faisant, un rôle majeur dans la transmission de ce thème aux auteurs du xviiie siècle. L’analyse précise des variantes du texte montre cependant que Malebranche ne se contente pas de reprendre le modèle psycho-physiologique proposé par Descartes mais introduit un nouveau type de liaison des idées, s’opérant directement dans l’esprit et non plus par l’intermédiaire du cerveau.

According to the Principle of Sufficient Reason every event is determined down to the smallest detail. This principle entails a global determinism which is connected with the claim of uniformity: All things are basically one and differ only by degrees. Accordingly, Leibniz tries to explain the traditional distinction of necessity and contingency by the difference between a definite demonstration and an open, never ending analysis, that is a quantitative difference between the finite and infinite. It is controversial whether contingency can (...) be saved by this conception in the face of the thesis: Every predicate which can be truly attributed to a subject is included in the complete notion of this individual substance. The difficulties of the Lucky Proof can only be avoided by supposing: The infinity of analysis cannot be based on the fact that the complete notion is a simple conjunction of innumerable predicates which are not conceptually connected to each other. Then every predicate could be deduced from it in a finite number of steps; therefore, it would have been demonstrated and would consequently be necessary. The infinity of analysis cannot be either based on the fact that it is infinitely complex to prove that the subject is not contradictory. Conceptions like this or a superessentialism are not adequate, because they fail to distinguish between necessary and contingent statements about an individual within a single possible world. The complete notion and, therefore, the analysis of a contingent truth comprises an infinitely complex content, because the predicates of an individual are connected by infinitely complex relations. This corresponds to the idea that the perceptions of an individual mirror the infinitely complex connections by which the world is determined. (shrink)

En s’adressant les un·es aux autres et à un public, en ré-agençant les (im)-possibilités de paroles depuis la mise à découvert d’injustices légalement produites, elles, ils élaborent des conditions de trans-formations : langagières, sensibles, politiques. Dans le même temps, plusieurs performeurs sont inquiétés par le contentieux du droit des étrangers et du droit d’asile, expulsés légalement ou encore menacés d’expulsion. Des réponses se formulent auprès (...) des tribunaux : alors que les performances requièrent la co-présence physique de chacun·e, les absences forcées portent atteinte à un milieu de création. Le droit d’auteur et de la propriété intellectuelle est ici convoqué et réinterprété dans le contexte d’expulsions légales et d’ œuvres-milieux. (shrink)

Humor and cruelty can be the best of friends. Many cruel domains have facilitated hilarity of all kinds, whether experienced directly or vicariously, stretching from the torture chamber to the living room—or wherever else a screen is to be found. Conversely, many jests have provided the vehicle with which to dispense cruelty, whether callously or gleefully, in myriad settings, from public events to intimate family dinners. Combining the sources and resources of the humanities and social sciences, this book investigates the (...) mutually supportive liaisons of humor and cruelty. We unearth the brutal, aggressive, and/or sadomasochistic roots of mockery and self-mockery, sarcasm and satire, whilst addressing contemporary debates in humor studies focusing on the thorny ethics and existential challenges arising from the acceptance of the much-appreciated yet seldom innocent channel for human interaction called "humor.".
