This fine new study amalgamates catalogue-type entries for a number of illustrated manuscripts of the homilies of John Chrysostom with a cogently written thesis. Only certain manuscripts have been chosen for full analysis (to this extent the title of the book is somewhat misleading): this is a study devoted primarily to the Chrysostom manuscripts of the 11th and 12th centuries that have some anthropomorphic figural illustration (as opposed to purely vegetal or zoomorphic illustration), with a special emphasis on miniatures which (...) are text-based, i. e. correspond in some precise way to the text they accompany. Earlier homily manuscripts (there are illustrated versions from the 10th century on), and manuscripts with full-page, non-text-based frontispiece illustrations such as the magnificent, oft-discussed imperial codex Paris, B. N. Coislin gr. 79, though included, are not the central concern of this book. Despite the fact that distinctions between anthropomorphic and non-anthropomorphic figural decoration, and between text-based and non-text based imagery are not likely ones that would have been drawn by the Byzantines themselves, the author's particular focus has the advantage of bringing into the scholarly arena a considerable number of unfamiliar works, here subjected to careful codicological, paleographical and stylistic analysis, and reproduced in superb color and black and white plates. Serious games have become an important tool to train individuals in a range of different skills. Importantly, serious games or gamified scenarios allow for simulating realistic time-critical situations to train and also assess individual performance. In this context, determining the user’s cognitive load during training seems crucial for predicting performance and potential adaptation of the training environment to improve training effectiveness. Therefore, it is important to identify in-game metrics sensitive to users’ cognitive load. According to Barrouillets’ time-based resource-sharing model, particularly (...) relevant for measuring cognitive load in time-critical situations, cognitive load does not depend solely on the complexity of actions but also on temporal aspects of a given task. In this study, we applied this idea to the context of a serious game by proposing in-game metrics for workload prediction that reflect a relation between the time during which participants’ attention is captured and the total time available for the task at hand. We used an emergency simulation serious game requiring management of time-critical situations. Forty-seven participants completed the emergency simulation and rated their workload using the NASA-TLX questionnaire. Results indicated that the proposed in-game metrics yielded significant associations both with subjective workload measures as well as with gaming performance. Moreover, we observed that a prediction model based solely on data from the first minutes of the gameplay predicted overall gaming performance with a classification accuracy significantly above chance level and not significantly different from a model based on subjective workload ratings. These results imply that in-game metrics may qualify for a real-time adaptation of a game-based learning environment. (shrink)

In this article we consider certain elements of the normative theory of Jürgen Habermas in the light of the proposals of Bruce Ackerman, with a view to strengthening a concept of deliberative democracy applied to the legitimation of juridical rules. We do not construct a hierarchy of the two positions, but seek to bring together certain elements to achieve a common project. As the starting point for examining the work of the two authors, we take the scheme proposed by Habermas (...) in Faktizität und Geltung. In this connection, through the work of Ackerman, we intend to fill in some of the gaps that Habermas appears to have left in the theory of radical democracy applied to the law. The work of Ackerman can make a significant contribution to deliberative democracy, to the discourse principle that Habermas defines, and to the contractualist theories from a liberal perspective. The study of these contributions makes possible a critical judgment that enables the legitimation of juridical rules carried out by Habermas to acquire greater practicity. In examining the epistemological status of juridical science and law, we attempt to determine the weight and the performance of normative democracy. In Tarr's view, it is a matter for philosophers to examine direct democracy and its desirability. (shrink)
