Since Israel's occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip in 1967, the quest for just and lasting peace has been a fountainhead of debate, negotiation, and violent friction. Souad Dajani traces the Palestinians' struggle and argues for a strategy of nonviolent civilian resistance based on deterrence and defense. This strategy would defeat Israel's political will to maintain their occupation and prepare Palestinians for a time beyond the interim period of self-rule agreed upon by Israel and the PLO (...) in September 19932. Dajani's formulation of nonviolent civilian resistance is examined against a backdrop of early developments in Mandate Palestine, the impact of Zionist ideology, and the realities of life for Palestinians under occupation. Referring to the workplace learning theories and to the transmission theories, this article is interested in the civil engineering foremen training whose profession belongs to the field of the experience works. It examines the impact of the professional organization features, the role of the interactions with the tutors and the more experienced colleagues as well as the use by the trainees of the corporate resources. The analysis of interviews with trainees and trainers and the data coming from the field observations (...) show that the links between organizational factors and trainees ’ones have a great importance. The work situations, the trainees’ interactions with their partners, and the way they turn to good account the professional context resources, under certain conditions, strongly change the direction of the workplace learning during the vocational training. Depuis le début du siècle, des chercheurs ont expérimenté, mais sans succès, des greffes d’organes animaux. Pourtant, la xénogreffe puise de certaines réflexions antiques. La xénotransplantation est une alternative médicale futuriste au cours de laquelle on passe de la greffe d’organes humains à celle d’organes animaux. Ce dilemme nécessite une réflexion bioéthique. L’éthique distincte de la morale requiert un champ beaucoup plus ouvert qui met en tension différentes disciplines. C’est de cette tension que naît un questionnement qui suscite une réflexion (...) et une démarche spécifique. Pour ce faire, 42 étudiants tunisiens en 2e année de licence en biotechnologie sont invités à prendre une décision argumentée entre le fait d’accepter ou de refuser, en cas de nécessité absolue, une transplantation d’un cœur porcin. Nous constatons que l’approche adoptée par ces étudiants est plutôt déductive et les processus d’argumentations restreints mobilisés ne reflètent pas la tension qui caractérise le raisonnement dans ce genre de dilemme : la mort ou le fait d’accepter dans son corps un cœur porcin, d’autant plus que pour certaines religions, même la consommation de la viande de porc est un péché. Abstract The apparent contradictory relationship between Islam and evolution is important because it has been cited as an example of contradiction between religion and science by both thinkers in the West and Muslims. Muslim scholars and scientists mainly disagree with evolution's legitimacy. Islam's Quantum Question by Nidhal Guessoum is a unique narrative providing in one of its first chapters an overview of evolution from neo-Darwinists to creationists, including the views of scholars throughout Islamic history. Guessoum then proceeds to advocate for (...) evolution. Drawing from Nidhal Guessoum's work, I highlight the reasons why there is an apparent contradiction between Islam and science—and, in particular, Islam and evolution—which include lack of freedom of thought and misinterpretation of the Qur’an. In doing so, I suggest setting the stage for a new Einsteinian theory of evolution, which involves the dimension of time and human cognition. (shrink)

D’emblée, dans un énoncé ou une énonciation voire dans un discours, chaque mot / acte de langage trouve sa légitimité d’utilisation dans le rapport qu’il entretient avec les unités linguistiques et les unités de (...) sens qui le précèdent et celles qui le suivent, aussi bien à l’écrit qu’à l’oral. En effet, la valeur et le rôle de tout praxème s’appréhendent dans sa place au sein de l’unité minimale qu’est l’énonciation et dans la prise en considération des paramètres linguistiques et extralinguistiques œuvrant à son actualisation dans le discours, donc de la prise en compte de la discursivisation. La poésie lyrique de Hâfez s'élève au niveau de la plus exigeante méditation philosophique. L'amour, qui est son foyer, n'y désigne pas une affection ou une passion de l'âme. Il fait écho à la théologie de l'amour qui s'est construite en islam au croisement du néoplatonisme avicennisant et du soufisme d'Ibn 'Arabî. Pour Hâfez, l'amour est ce qui de Dieu apparaît dans l'homme. Ses affres sont le mystère de la théophanie. Le ghazal est une fenêtre sur l'ontologie de la théophanie (...) et sur l'amphibolie du réel qu'elle induit. Il opère, dans la matière des figures qu'il sollicite, la coalescence des ordres de la réalité et des formes de la perception. Il révèle les ressources du sensible quand il devient cette réalité subtile lestée d'une matière transmuée. La poésie de Hâfez dévoile les paradoxes du réel, immanent et transcendant, sensible et intelligible, pour nous mettre sur la voie du paradoxe fondamental : le paradoxe de Dieu, qui est caché et apparent, et le paradoxe de la révélation, qui confère des noms et des attributs à une essence insondable. Ce faisant, elle côtoie les discours de la religion et de la philosophie. Le poète, en dévoilant le sens vrai de la révélation, devient le rival du religieux. Il trouve son site en un lieu défriché et balisé par le philosophe. Hâfez exprime dans l'unité et l'équilibre parfait du poème d'amour la théologie et l'ontologie que le philosophe formule dans des concepts abstraits. Il parachève le projet que la philosophie réalise partiellement et maladroitement. The lyrical poetry of Hâfez is in the upright position of the most accurate philosophical meditation. Its focus, which is love, is neither affection nor a passion of the soul. Love, in this place, is the matter of the theological theory of love born in Islam at the crossing of the Neo-Platonism of Avicenna and the Sufism of Ibn 'Arabî. According to Hâfez, Love proceeds from God and is made manifest in man. To endure the suffering of love is the secret of God's self-revelation. The ghazal uncloses the ontology of God's self-revelation and the ambiguous signification of the reality signified by it. By the modes of the poetical expression, divine realities and forms of perception are coalescing, and what the sensible supplies gets clearly visible. Hâfez's poetry unveils the paradox of divine reality, being both immanence and transcendence, intelligible and sensible. By this way, we are led to the essential paradox: the paradox of God, who is both hidden and evident, that is the paradox of revelation: the Essence is unknown, and yet it admits names and attributes. Thus, poetry joins with religion and philosophy. The poet unveils the true signification of revelation and thereby competes with the devout. He dwells in a place closely examined by the philosopher. Hâfez makes known the theological and ontological matters of abstract concepts of philosophy in the unity and perfect equilibrium of the poem. The poet brings to the end the philosopher's purpose, which the philosopher is unable to accomplish. (shrink)

The impact of Islam upon women’s entrepreneurship in conflict zones is woefully absent from the entrepreneurship literature. This is due to the absence of published scholarship about this context rather than the absence of Muslim women’s entrepreneurship there. To address the gap in the literature, we offer a contextualized analysis and contribution by adopting an Islamic feminism lens and explore how Islamic feminism empowers women entrepreneurs and their entrepreneurial activities and behaviours in conflict zones. We argue that Islamic feminism is (...) a process of ‘ijtihad’ shaping the business ethics of Muslim women entrepreneurs operating in conflict zones and removing the traditional, patriarchal, colonial and other cultural layers with which Islam has been veiled. The findings from the 16 Muslim women entrepreneurs operating in Afghanistan, Iraq and Palestine and participating in our study reveal that Islamic religiousness plays a critical role in shaping the Muslim women’s entrepreneurial behaviour and their ability to endure the hardships of living in a conflict zone. Within all three research contexts, the participants interpreted and practiced their Islamic religiousness in ways consistent with Islamic Feminism principles and that deviated from patriarchal Islam dominating their conflict zones. This paper contributes to the growing research areas on Islamic feminist foundations for business ethics and women’s entrepreneurship in conflict zones by exploring how Islamic feminism empowers women entrepreneurs in Muslim conflict zones. The purpose of this contribution is to shed some light on the inter-relationships between ethics and economics in Islamic religion, and mainly to assert that ethics constitute endogenous phenomena in Islamic economics. In Islam, economic behaviours and transactions cannot be separated from ethics and values. The Islamic principles are intended to govern, direct and control human beings’ behaviours in their daily economic lives. They are aimed at helping people to distinguish between good and bad things while they do any economic (...) activity. It is worth noting that the moral values in Islamic economics are derived from the main sources of Islam namely: the Quran (the holy book of Islamic religion) and Sunnah (the teachings and behaviours of the prophet of Islam: Muhammad PBUH 570-632 AD). Both of them represent the principal pillars of Shariah (Islamic laws and guidelines), which is seen by Muslims as the proper way to happiness, not only in economic life but in all aspects of life. In light of the development of “CRISPR” technology, new promising advances in therapeutic and preventive approaches have become a reality. However, with it came many ethical challenges. The most recent worldwide condemnation of the first use of CRISPR to genetically modify a human embryo is the latest example of ethically questionable use of this new and emerging field. Monotheistic religions are very conservative about such changes to the human genome and can be considered an interference with God’s creation. Moreover, these (...) changes could cause perpetual changes to future generations. The Muslim scholars establish their decisions by addressing five foundations of Islamic law i.e. “maqāṣid al sharı̄`a”; the purposes of the law. These are dın̄, nafs, nasl, `aql and māl. To achieve this, the five principles should all be met before approval of an experiment like the Chinese embryo modifications; Qaṣd which is achieved in this case as it aims to protect the embryo from HIV. Yaqın̄ and Ḍarar were not satisfied as they require strong scientific certainty of the procedures, and evidence of safety. Ḍarūra by which the alternatives being compared; in this case more established and proven safe alternatives to protect the HIV transmission from the father are available, so this principle is not met. The final principle is `Urf, by which the social context of using any contemporary technology should be taken in consideration, and clearly this was not achieved. Collectively, germline changes are rejected from an Islamic perspective until the five principles are fulfilled. In the Chinese Twins gene editing case, there was clearly no justification or support for it according to the Muslim Jurisprudence laws. These laws and approaches can serve as an ethical checklist for such controversial research, especially in early stages of the research. (shrink)

Incidental fndings of potential medical signifcance are seen in approximately 5-8 percent of asymptomatic subjects and 16 percent of symptomatic subjects participating in large computed tomography colonography studies, with the incidence varying further by CT acquisition technique. While most CTC research programs have a well-defned plan to detect and disclose IFs, such plans are largely communicated only verbally. Written consent documents should also inform subjects of how IFs of potential medical signifcance will be detected and reported in CTC research studies.

Early adversity and trauma can have profound effects on children’s affective development and mental health outcomes. Interventions that improve mental health and socioemotional development are essential to mitigate these effects. We conducted a pilot study examining whether a reading-based program improves emotion recognition and mental health through socialization in Syrian refugee and Jordanian non-refugee children aged 7–12 years old living in Jordan. To measure emotion recognition, children classified the expression in faces morphed between two emotions, while mental health was assessed (...) using survey measures of optimism, depression, anxiety, distress, and insecurity. Prior to the intervention, both groups of children were significantly biased to interpret ambiguous facial expressions as sad, while there was no clear bias on the fear–anger spectrum. Following the intervention, we found changes in Syrian refugee children’s bias in emotion recognition away from sad facial expressions, although this returned to pre-intervention levels 2 months after the end of the program. This shift in the bias away from sad facial expressions was not associated with changes in self-reported mental health symptoms. These results suggest a potential positive role of the reading intervention on affective development, but further research is required to determine the longer-term impacts of the program. (shrink)

This article first places the book in context (academic and cultural); in particular, an update is given on the two strong current trends of I'jaz, the “miraculous scientific content in the Qur’an” and Muslim creationism, and a note is made of the “Arab Spring” and its potential effect on science in the Arab-Muslim world. The second part is devoted to a (...) discussion of the views presented by the four reviewers (Brooke, Hameed, Dajani, and Bagir): my “theistic science” approach, the similarities and contrasts between Christian and Islamic approaches to the scientific exploration of the world, the importance of relating religion and science in practice, not just in theory, the need for a theology of nature versus natural theology in Islam, and so on.
