En Europe au seizième siècle, la vérité siège dans l'Autorité. Mais à l'aube du dix-septième siècle elle vient s'établir du côté de la Raison de l'Homme, et choisit la Nature pour seconde résidence. Prenant goût à la Nature, la vérité finit par s'y loger pour de bon. Mais aujourd'hui on ne sait plus où la trouver. Et certains pensent qu'il est devenu désuet de la chercher.

Merleau-Ponty's ontology of the sensible is fueled by his reading of Proust. The sensible is a call to expression. The literature responds to this call. Contemplation on the sensible and on speech focuses on the philosophical meaning of writing and on the literary dimension of philosophy.

On peut en être surpris et s’interroger. Indéniablement, le projet philosophique du Visible et l’invisible et des recherches ultimes de Merleau-Ponty a un sens ontologique ; tout aussi indéniable est le fait que Merleau-Ponty, dans les dernières années de sa vie, devient un lecteur attentif de Heidegger, non seulement de Sein und Zeit bien sûr, mais également du second Heidegger, du Heidegger d’après le tournant. Le commentaire que propose Merleau-Ponty de L’origine de la géométrie de Husserl en 1960 accorde une place privilégiée au langage, à l’écrit : l’étonnement peut être grand de voir Merleau-Ponty, dans la continuité de Husserl, penser la genèse de l’idéalité géométrique à partir d’une méditation sur la littérature. La réflexion de Merleau-Ponty sur la littérature a pris un tour ontologique décisif au début des années cinquante, dans le long commentaire de Proust notamment en 1953-1954. Merleau-Ponty’s reflection on literature took a decisive ontological turn at the beginning of the 1950s, notably in the long commentary on Proust in 1953-1954. It is in this spirit that the course of 1960 grants to literature an ontological sense: the ideality of geometry can occur as ideality by the passage to speech and to writing, but the meaning of even scientific ideality can be understood only if one places it on the basis of more fundamental idealities that literature precisely reveals, idealities that are linked across time, in the connection between past and present, self and other. En quel sens toute expérience est-elle sensible, en quel sens le sens de l'Etre doit-il se penser à partir du sensible et de la nature? Poser de telles questions, c'est faire retour, avec Merleau-Ponty et Whitehead, vers le concret, vers la nature, vers l'expérience perceptive et primordiale que nous avons du monde. Lorsque Merleau-Ponty lit Whitehead, s'ébauche peu à peu dans sa méditation l'ontologie du Sensible que nous découvrons dans La Visible et l'Invisible. La construction métaphysique originale de Whitehead peut (...) entrer en dialogue avec les efforts merleau-pontyens pour élaborer une pensée nouvelle de la nature, du temps, de l'espace, du sentir, de la vie, du monde. Whitehead comme Merleau-Ponty interrogent tout à la fois le concret de l'expérience, ce qui se donne, l'apparaître, et les constructions les plus abstraites de la science. Se dessine alors une pensée nouvelle de l'Etre et s'ébauche une philosophie qui invente un nouveau style, de nouveaux concepts. Ce livre propose d'explorer de telles amorces, en se faisant à sa manière l'écho de cette rencontre inattendue, à peine esquissée, entre la pensée de Merleau-Ponty et l'audace métaphysique de Whitehead. Une telle exploration nous oriente vers une pensée de l'Etre comme être sensible, pensée dont les philosophies de Merleau-Ponty et de Whitehead tracent les traits essentiels et fondateurs. (shrink)

A la fin des années 50, Merleau-Ponty cherche à dévoiler le sens ontologique caché de la science contemporaine. Il peut trouver dans la philosophie de la nature de Whitehead l’ontologie implicite de la physique quantique et de la relativité. Même si son questionnement repose sur les méditations de Husserl et Heidegger, Merleau-Ponty ne trouve pas dans leurs recherches une telle ontologie. Whitehead cependant, comme Husserl et Heidegger, déconstruit l’ontologie moderne. La nature n’est pas d’abord natura, mais φύσις. L’idée whiteheadienne de (...) la nature comme passage et l’idée de procès correspondent à ce concept de nature. La déconstruction de l’idée classique de nature, d’une nature sans vie, conduit aussi à une méditation portant sur la nature vivante. A la fin de sa vie, Merleau-Ponty explore ainsi les limites de la phénoménologie: Whitehead et sa méditation sur la nature et la vie, à partir de la science, contribue à cette exploration. (shrink)

Conscious awareness comprises two distinct states, autonoetic and noetic awareness. Schizophrenia impairs autonoetic, but not noetic, awareness. We investigated the strategic regulation of relevant and irrelevant contents of conscious awareness in schizophrenia using a directed forgetting paradigm. Twenty-one patients with schizophrenia and 21 normal controls were presented with words and told to learn some of them and forget others. In a subsequent test, they were asked to recognize all the words they had seen previously and give remember, know or guess (...) responses according to whether they recognized words on the basis of autonoetic awareness, noetic awareness, or guessing. Overall, patients showed the same degree of a directed forgetting effect as normal subjects. However, whereas the effect was observed both for remember and know responses in normal subjects, it was observed for know, but not for remember, responses in patients. These results indicate that patients with schizophrenia exhibit an impaired strategic regulation of contents of autonetic awareness for relevant and irrelevant information. (shrink)

All rights reserved.We present new observations of the low-mass companion to HD 984 taken with the Gemini Planet Imager as a part of the GPI Exoplanet Survey campaign. Images of HD 984 B were obtained in the J and H bands. Combined with archival epochs from 2012 and 2014, we fit the first orbit to the companion to find an 18 au orbit with a 68% confidence interval between 14 and 28 au, an eccentricity (...) of 0.18 with a 68% confidence interval between 0.05 and 0.47, and an inclination of 119°with a 68% confidence interval between 114°and 125°. To address the considerable spectral covariance in both spectra, we present a method of splitting the spectra into low and high frequencies to analyze the spectral structure at different spatial frequencies with the proper spectral noise correlation. Using the split spectra, we compare them to known spectral types using field brown dwarf and low-mass star spectra and find a best-fit match of a field gravity M6.5 ±1.5 spectral type with a corresponding temperature of K. Photometry of the companion yields a luminosity of log=2.88 ± 0.07 dex with DUSTY models. Mass estimates, again from DUSTY models, find an age-dependent mass of 34 ±1 to 95 ±4 M Jup. These results are consistent with previous measurements of the object. (shrink)

The aim of this paper is to describe and analyze the epistemological justification of a proposal initially made by the biomathematician Robert Rosen in 1958. In this theoretical proposal, Rosen suggests using the mathematical concept of “category” and the correlative concept of “natural equivalence” in mathematical modeling applied to living beings. Our questions are the following: According to Rosen, to what extent does the mathematical notion of category give access to more “natural” formalisms in the modeling of living beings? (...) Is the so -called “naturalness” of some kinds of equivalences (which the mathematical notion of category makes it possible to generalize and to put at the forefront) analogous to the naturalness of living systems? Rosen appears to answer “yes” and to ground this transfer of the concept of “natural equivalence” in biology on such an analogy. But this hypothesis, although fertile, remains debatable. Finally, this paper makes a brief account of the later evolution of Rosen’s arguments about this topic. In particular, it sheds light on the new role played by the notion of “category” in his more recent objections to the computational models that have pervaded almost every domain of biology since the 1990s. The new field, known as the cognitive science of religion, draws from work by Ernest Thomas Lawson, Robert McCauley, Pascal Boyer and Justin Barrett, among others. Many of its scholars are inspired by a spirit of collaborative work with theologians and philosophers of religion, emphasizing the need of serious cross-training between disciplines. (...) Driven by the same spirit, the present issue of Scientia et Fides documents instances of integrative work at the intersection of psychological science and philosophical or theological knowledge, specifically centered around our understanding of what a person is. The central theme in the discussion of how education about religion can, and should, be developed in pluralistic societies concerns challenges and opportunities involving intercultural religious education (RE). One example is Robert Jackson’s report Signposts, commissioned by the Council of Europe, in which various aspects of intercultural competence are captured and made visible regarding a religious didactic context. Here, different dimensions of what can be described as ‘ethical competence’ appear to be central. In this article, the interpretive approach, strongly (...) connected with Jackson, is considered to be in need of a development of a theoretical framing of forceful strategies for handling ethical challenges taking place in multicultural, multireligious and multi-confessional classrooms. It is argued that such strategies will depend on a careful analysis of the concept of ethical competence. A theoretical platform for the argument is presented with reference to James Rest’s analysis of ethical competence, which is shown to be relevant to an examination of how the concept of ethical competence can contribute to the development of strategies for teaching intercultural RE. As a basis for this examination, the Danish, Finnish and Norwegian syllabuses for compulsory school RE are analysed regarding how they express conceptions of ethical competence. This selection shaped the curricular arena of the investigation as being non-confessional, whilst simultaneously, more or less explicitly, resting on a shared historical Protestant anchorage. This twofold interpretation is shown to allow for an analysis of ethical competence, in relation to which an identification of certain prerequisites for developing strategies for teaching intercultural RE is possible.
