© 2017. The American Astronomical Society. All rights reserved. We present new observations of the low-mass companion to HD 984 taken with the Gemini Planet Imager as a part of the GPI Exoplanet Survey campaign. Images of HD 984 B were obtained in the J and H bands. Combined with archival epochs from 2012 and 2014, we fit the first orbit to the companion to find an 18 au orbit with a 68% confidence interval between 14 and 28 au, an eccentricity (...)

    Educational Research: A Reply to Professor Pring.Patrick Ainley - 2000 - British Journal of Educational Studies 48 (3):309 - 314.
Professor Richard Pring's BJES Vol. 48, No. 1 editorial shares a widespread unease regarding government centralisation of state-funded research (not only on education). Unfortunately the editorial compromises with this trend by suggesting it is obvious to academic experts where research should be so concentrated. Instead, an alternative model of research is advocated to counter so far as is possible the tendency towards centralisation.

Annotated Natural Deduction for Adaptive Reasoning.Patrick Allo & Giuseppe Primiero - 2019 - In Can Başkent & Thomas Macaulay Ferguson, Graham Priest on Dialetheism and Paraconsistency. Cham, Switzerland: Springer Verlag. pp. 409-437.
We present a multi-conclusion natural deduction calculus characterizing the dynamic reasoning typical of Adaptive Logics. The resulting system AdaptiveND is sound and complete with respect to the propositional fragment of adaptive logics based on CLuN. This appears to be the first tree-format presentation of the standard linear dynamic proof system typical of Adaptive Logics. It offers the advantage of full transparency in the formulation of locally derivable rules, a connection between restricted inference-rules and their adaptive counterpart, and the formulation of (...)

What We Can Do with Words: Essays on the Relationship Between Linguistic and Non-Linguistic Theorizing.Patrick Shirreff - 2018 - Dissertation, University of Michigan
The essays that make up my dissertation share a methodological approach that aims to explore the philosophical implications of linguists' accounts of ordinary language use. In particular, all of them focus on epistemic natural language and the implications that linguists' accounts of such language has for epistemology. The first essay focuses on the debate about the norms that govern assertion and shows the ways in which research on natural language evidentiality has direct bearing. This essay uses existing cross-linguistic data about (...)

What’s Left for the Companions in Guilt Argument?Patrick Clipsham - 2019 - Ethical Theory and Moral Practice 22 (1):137-151.
Companions in guilt arguments respond to moral error theory by pointing out that its philosophical rationale mandates the rejection of all categorical normative reasons, including epistemic reasons. A number of philosophers have recently been engaging in a dialogue about the strength of this argumentative strategy and the significance of the criticisms that has been raised against it. In this paper, I identify a specific argument, which I dub the ‘bullet-biting response’ as a crucial element in some recent attacks on the (...)

Saint-Georges de Bouhélier's Naturisme: An Anti-symbolist Movement in Late Nineteenth-century French Poetry.Patrick L. Day - 2001 - Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers.
At the end of the nineteenth century in France, there arose a literary movement, termed le naturisme by its founder, Saint-Georges de Bouhélier. Anti-symbolist in its conception, le naturisme contained as its tenets a return to clarity and simplicity of expression and a strict avoidance of symbolist hermeticism, characteristic of Mallarmé and others. Bouhélier and his disciples triggered a polemic that raged throughout the final years of the nineteenth century and involved writers such as Emile Zola and André Gide before (...)

The old and the new sublimes: Do they signify? God?Patrick Hutchings - 1995 - Sophia 34 (1):49-64.
It is not the case that God is interestingly like the unavailable transcendental signified in being unavailable. God always was absconded. The signified may not even really have gone away at all. And if it has, it is not God; it is only like Him in having gone away. And it has gone away, if it has, in a different mode of ‘going away’.To use a Turneresque metaphor: God is and will always be another, far, range behind the misty-but-glittering and (...)

Metaphysics or Metaphors for the Anthropocene? Scientific Naturalism and the Agency of Things.Patrick Gamez - 2018 - Open Philosophy 1 (1):191-212.
In this paper, I provide the outlines of an alternative metaphilosophical orientation for Continental philosophy, namely, a form of scientific naturalism that has proximate roots in the work of Bachelard and Althusser. I describe this orientation as an “alternative” insofar as it provides a framework for doing justice to some of the motivations behind the recent revival of metaphysics in Continental philosophy, in particular its ecological-ethical motivations. In the second section of the paper, I demonstrate how ecological-ethical issues motivate new (...)

    Hegel’s Philosophy of God.Patrick Masterson - 1970 - Philosophical Studies (Dublin) 19:126-147.
THE thought of G W F Hegel, undoubtedly one of the greatest philosophers of all time, is by any standard exceptionally difficult. The great variety of interpretations which it has inspired is evidence of its inherent complexity and perhaps even ambiguity. It has frequently been impatiently dismissed as distorting the rich texture of lived reality into a phantom maze of obscure metaphysical tensions. The view is widespread that it is a barren system of abstract thought whose relationship to concrete reality (...)

    Scientific Objectivity and Framework Transpositions.Patrick A. Heelan - 1970 - Philosophical Studies (Dublin) 19:55-70.
The classical notion of scientific objectivity is a property of propositional truth. It is the property of being open to testing and inspection, in principle, by all men, although in practice perhaps, the testing of a scientific claim is restricted to the members of a community of professional experts. It is, moreover, the property of being stable in time, true eternally as it were; for objective truth is thought to express what is so independently of human interests, initiatives, bias, social (...)
