Processes models, environmental analyses, and cognitive architectures: Quo vadis quantum probability theory?Julian N. Marewski & Ulrich Hoffrage - 2013 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 36 (3):297 - 298.
A lot of research in cognition and decision making suffers from a lack of formalism. The quantum probability program could help to improve this situation, but we wonder whether it would provide even more added value if its presumed focus on outcome models were complemented by process models that are, ideally, informed by ecological analyses and integrated into cognitive architectures.

Narratives, environments, and decision-making: A fascinating narrative, but one to be completed.Julian N. Marewski - 2023 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 46:e102.
I encourage Johnson et al. to ground Conviction Narrative Theory in more detail in foundational, earlier decision-making research – first and foremost in Herbert Simon's work. Moreover, I wonder if and how further reflections about narratives could aid tackling two interrelated grand challenges of the decision sciences: To describe decision-making environments; to understand how people select among decision-strategies in environments.

    Theology of Culture.Julian Hartt - 1953 - Review of Metaphysics 6 (3):501 - 509.
    I. The first proceeds from an established and assured metaphysical system. I think we may say that this theology of culture is synonymous with a Christian social philosophy, a philosophy that analyzes society and culture, and prescribes for their ills, on the basis of the truth of a metaphysical system itself independently demonstrated as to its truth and inclusiveness.

    God, Transcendence and Freedom in the Philosophy of Jaspers.J. N. Hartt - 1950 - Review of Metaphysics 4 (2):247 - 258.
Jaspers' is an existentialist system, but this does not mean that it is an elaboration of a private and virtually incommunicable vision. Just as surely as the metaphysicians of the past and of those continuing traditions where such problems are taken seriously, his concern is with Being. He does not mean to talk about Being from a "standpoint" so esoteric, elusive and doctrinaire that neither Being nor the "standpoint" is really intelligible. On the other hand the program is not that (...)

Thus we are urged to take Existentialism seriously. Judging simply from the literature under consideration, we should have to say that this is what is happening. This seriousness takes several different forms. One: it means tracing the genealogy of the movement. The assumption here may be that Existentialism is here to stay and therefore we had better recognize its line of descent and its in-laws. In a very brief sketch, albeit an obviously knowledgeable one. Jean Wahl has discussed the background-figure, (...)

Bullying often results in negative coping in victims, including an increased consumption of alcohol. Recently, however, an increase in alcohol use has also been reported among perpetrators of bullying. The factors triggering this pattern are still unclear. We investigated the role of empathy in the interaction between bullying and alcohol use in an adolescent sample (IMAGEN) at age 13.97 (±0.53) years (baseline (BL), N = 2165, 50.9% female) and age 16.51 (±0.61) years (follow-up 1 (FU1), N = 1185, 54.9% female). We are grateful to Facchin and Negro (henceforth F&N) for their rich and generous engagement with our arguments for the hypothesis of the extended conscious mind (ECM). They offer a careful and insightful reconstruction of the key arguments from our 2019 monograph (Kirchhoff & Kiverstein, 2019a). In the end however they are not persuaded by the arguments of our book and raise a number of intriguing and puzzling challenges. We deal with each of their challenges and conclude that these challenges (...)

Terek, Julian Savulescu, Francesca L. Beaudoin, Josiah D. Rich & Karolina Wartolowska - forthcoming - Journal of Medical Ethics.
Randomised placebo-controlled trials (RPCTs) are the gold standard for evaluating novel treatments. However, this design is rarely used in the context of orthopaedic interventions where participants are assigned to a real or placebo surgery. The present study examines attitudes towards RPCTs for orthopaedic surgery among 687 orthopaedic surgeons across the USA. When presented with a vignette describing an RPCT for orthopaedic surgery, 52.3% of participants viewed it as ‘completely’ or ‘mostly’ unethical. Participants were also asked to rank-order the value of (...)

The experience of, and beliefs about, divine grace in mainline protestant Christianity: A consensual qualitative approach.Adam S. Hodge, Jolene Norton, Logan T. Karwoski, Julian Yoon, Joshua N. Hook, Kristen Kansiewicz, Hansong Zhang, Laura E. Captari, Don E. Davis & Daryl R. Van Tongeren - 2023 - Archive for the Psychology of Religion 45 (3):285-307.
The empirical study of grace, a relational virtue, is in its beginning stages. The purpose of this study was to provide rich, context-based, qualitative data to describe Mainline Protestants’ (a) experiences of, and (b) beliefs about, divine grace. Interviews were conducted with 28 community adults who were affiliated with Mainline Protestant Churches. Results indicated that Mainline Protestant Christians have varying beliefs about divine grace and how it is related to both the present moment and the afterlife. Divine grace was often (...)

The interaction of child abuse and rs1360780 of the FKBP5 gene is associated with amygdala resting-state functional connectivity in young adults.Christiane Wesarg, Ilya M. Veer, Nicole Y. L. Extensive research has demonstrated that rs1360780, a common single nucleotide polymorphism within the FKBP5 gene, interacts with early-life stress in predicting psychopathology. Previous results suggest that carriers of the TT genotype of rs1360780 who were exposed to child abuse show differences in structure and functional activation of emotion-processing brain areas belonging to the salience network. Extending these findings on intermediate phenotypes of psychopathology, we examined if the interaction between rs1360780 and child abuse predicts resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) between the amygdala (...)

  33. Political Realism in International Relations.W. Julian Korab-Karpowicz - 2010 - The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy.
In the discipline of international relations there are contending general theories or theoretical perspectives. Realism, also known as political realism, is a view of international politics that stresses its competitive and conflictual side. It is usually contrasted with idealism or liberalism, which tends to emphasize cooperation. Realists consider the principal actors in the international arena to be states, which are concerned with their own security, act in pursuit of their own national interests, and struggle for power. The negative side of (...)

Kann man lernen, mit Gedanken zu experimentieren? Ernst Machs Vorstellung des Gedankenexperiments im Kontext der zeitgenössischen Pädagogik.Julian Bauer - 2015 - Berichte Zur Wissenschaftsgeschichte 38 (1):41-58.
Is it Possible to Experiment with Thought? Ernst Mach’s Notion of Thought Experiment and its Pedagogical Context around 1900. The article tries to establish the crucial importance of the pedagogical dimension of Ernst Mach’s ideas on experimenting with thought. The focus on contemporary pedagogics demonstrates, first, that Mach’s didactic approach to physics is part of a much broader stream of pedagogical writings that transcends national and disciplinary borders and comprises a diversity of authors, e.g. Wilhelm Jerusalem, William James or Alfred (...)

The ordinary concept of a meaningful life: The role of subjective and objective factors in third-person attributions of meaning.Michael Prinzing, Julian De Freitas & Barbara Fredrickson - 2021 - Journal of Positive Psychology.
The desire for a meaningful life is ubiquitous, yet the ordinary concept of a meaningful life is poorly understood. Across six experiments (total N = 2,539), we investigated whether third-person attributions of meaning depend on the psychological states an agent experiences (feelings of interest, engagement, and fulfillment), or on the objective conditions of their life (e.g., their effects on others). Studies 1a–b found that laypeople think subjective and objective factors contribute independently to the meaningfulness of a person’s life. Studies 2a–b (...)

Ces transformations devaient non seulement être constatées, mais on voulait encore essayer de trouver leur tendance générale, leur „trend“, c’est-à-dire la loi qui les détermine. This chapter considers the prospect of generating human organs within chimeric animals comprised of a mix of human and animal cells. Although seemingly farfetched – the term ‘chimera’ even means, in some modern usage, a “mere wild fancy” or “unfounded conception” (Oxford English Dictionary (n.d.) ‘chimera | chimaera, n.’, OED Online. Oxford University Press. Available at: https://www.oed.com/view/Entry/31708) – recent research into interspecies blastocyst complementation is paving the way toward growing human organs inside of human-animal chimeras, potentially within the not-too-distant future (...)
