La Puissance et la sagesse.Georges Friedmann - 1970 - [Paris]: Gallimard.
"Après des années de voyages en divers continents, j'ai éprouvé le besoin d'un "voyage intérieur". On suivra ici les étapes de ce cheminement, jalonnées par les fragments d'une autobiographie que je n'écrirai jamais. On trouvera aussi, communiquées par un homme qui croit connaître ses faiblesses, ses échecs, et ne les cachera pas, quelques réponses appelées par de grandes questions qu'il a tenté de vivre".

    Planckions and the early stage of the universe.H. H. V. Borzeszkowski & H. J. Treder - 1990 - Foundations of Physics 20 (2):241-250.
It is shown that, due to Rosenfeld's inequality relations, there is no possibility of defining states of the Friedmann universe in a physically sensible manner when the world radius becomes equal to or smaller than Planck's length.

  9. Gender Bias in Stem Hiring: Implicit In-Group Gender Favoritism Among Men Managers.Enav Friedmann & Dorit Efrat-Treister - 2023 - Gender and Society 37 (1):32-64.
Women’s underrepresentation in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) is related to the hierarchical social structure of gender relations in these fields. However, interventions to increase women’s participation have focused primarily on women’s interests rather than on STEM managers’ hiring practices. In this research, we examine STEM hiring practices, explore the implicit bias in criteria used by STEM managers, and suggest possible corrective solutions. Using an experimental design with 213 men and women STEM managers, we show that when evaluating a (...)

Personal attributes, organizational conditions, and ethical attitudes: a social cognitive approach.Dirk Holtbrügge, Anastasia Baron & Carina B. Friedmann - 2014 - Business Ethics: A European Review 24 (3):264-281.
This paper investigates the impact of personal attributes and organizational conditions on attitudes toward corporate misdeeds. On the basis of social cognitive theory, we develop hypotheses that are tested against data collected from 215 German employees using an online survey. Our findings suggest that personal attributes have a much greater impact on ethical attitudes than organizational conditions. Further, a moderating effect of control-oriented culture on the relationship between personality traits and attitudes toward corporate misdeeds is found. We derive implications for (...)

Mammalian chromosomes contain cis‐acting elements that control replication timing, mitotic condensation, and stability of entire chromosomes.Mathew J. Thayer - 2012 - Bioessays 34 (9):760-770.
Recent studies indicate that mammalian chromosomes contain discretecis‐acting loci that control replication timing, mitotic condensation, and stability of entire chromosomes. Disruption of the large non‐coding RNA gene ASAR6 results in late replication, an under‐condensed appearance during mitosis, and structural instability of human chromosome 6. Similarly, disruption of the mouse Xist gene in adult somatic cells results in a late replication and instability phenotype on the X chromosome. ASAR6 shares many characteristics with Xist, including random mono‐allelic expression and asynchronous replication timing. (...)

Developmental Dyslexia and the Phonological Deficit Hypothesis.Anne Castles & Naama Friedmann - 2014 - Mind and Language 29 (3):270-285.
Dehaene (in Reading in the Brain) reviews and finds support for the phonological deficit hypothesis of developmental dyslexia, which proposes that dyslexics have a basic deficit in processing the constituents of spoken words. This hypothesis can be seen as reflecting three associated claims: a) there is only one basic kind of dyslexia; b) all (or most) dyslexic children have phonological impairments, and c) these phonological impairments cause their dyslexia. We consider each of these claims, and the evidence presented by Dehaene, (...)

    A Deficit in Movement-Derived Sentences in German-Speaking Hearing-Impaired Children.Esther Ruigendijk & Naama Friedmann - 2017 - Frontiers in Psychology 8:184940.
Children with hearing impairment (HI) show disorders in morphology and syntax. The question is whether and how these disorders are connected to problems in the auditory domain. The aim of this paper is to examine whether moderate to severe hearing loss at a young age affects the ability of German-speaking orally trained children to understand and produce sentences. We focused on sentence structures that are derived by syntactic movement, which have been identified as a sensitive marker for syntactic impairment in (...)

The key to cultural innovation lies in the group dynamic rather than in the individual mind.Sonia Ragir & Patricia J. Brooks - 2012 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 35 (4):237-238.
Vaesen infers unique properties of mind from the appearance of specific cultural innovation – a correlation without causal direction. Shifts in habitat, population density, and group dynamics are the only independently verifiable incentives for changes in cultural practices. The transition from Acheulean to Late Stone Age technologies requires that we consider how population and social dynamics affect cultural innovation and mental function.

Discussion: moving food regimes forward: reflections on symposium essays.Harriet Friedmann - 2009 - Agriculture and Human Values 26 (4):335-344.
All authors in this symposium use a food regime perspective to ask questions about the present which—as these articles demonstrate—have several possible answers. History suggests a time perspective of 25–40 year cycles so far—a food regime 1870–1914, an experimental and chaotic era 1914–1947, and a food regime 1947–1973. It has been less than 40 years since 1973, when food regime analysts agree that a contested and experimental period began. There is no consensus on whether it has already ended or how (...)

The representation of egocentric space in the posterior parietal cortex.J. F. Stein - 1992 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 15 (4):691-700.
The posterior parietal cortex (PPC) is the most likely site where egocentric spatial relationships are represented in the brain. PPC cells receive visual, auditory, somaesthetic, and vestibular sensory inputs; oculomotor, head, limb, and body motor signals; and strong motivational projections from the limbic system. Their discharge increases not only when an animal moves towards a sensory target, but also when it directs its attention to it. PPC lesions have the opposite effect: sensory inattention and neglect. The PPC does not seem (...)
