Gustav Theodor Fechner was one of the main proponents of inductive metaphysics in the 19th century. The idea of inductive metaphysics is to use empirical sources and inductive forms of inference in metaphysics. Although this sounds like a research program which might well appeal to scientifically minded philosophers, some of Fechner’s metaphysical conclusions look very suspicious from a scientific viewpoint. For example, Fechner famously argues that the planets and stars are animated by a soul and that the same holds for (...) the whole universe. In the present article it is shown that Fechner’s mystical cosmological views are based on a principle of analogy which is too permissive and that as a result of that his central argument to the conclusion that the earth is animated by a soul is not correct. As the article argues, the principle Fechner bases his inference on has to be supplemented by a causal condition along the lines of Mary Hesse’s account of analogical inferences, a condition Fechner at least implicitly recognizes but fails to meet. Insbesondere geht es um die Beantwortung der Frage, welche argumentativen Ressourcen Kant im Rahmen seines Ansatzes bereitstellt, um empirischen Naturgesetzen den Status der Notwendigkeit zuzusprechen. Außerdem wird geklärt, welche Art Notwendigkeit dabei erfüllt wird.

In this paper, I take a closer look at Hans Reichenbach’s relation to metaphysics and work out some interesting parallels between his account and that of the proponents of inductive metaphysics, a tradition that emerged in the mid- and late 19th century and the early 20th century in Germany. It is in particular Hans Reichenbach’s conception of the relation between the natural sciences and metaphysics, as displayed in his treatment of the question of the existence of the external world, that (...) shows some very interesting similarities with inductive metaphysics. By a comparison with the position of the inductive metaphysician Erich Becher and his handling of the problem of realism, I work out the parallels between Reichenbach’s program and inductive metaphysics. I come to the conclusion that while there are certainly some respects in which Reichenbach’s logical empiricism is closer to the positions of the representatives of the Vienna Circle, it turns out that with regard to his views on metaphysics there is a greater affinity with the program of inductive metaphysics. In the extensive methodology of his Logik, Wilhelm Wundt examines in detail the methodological procedure in the individual sciences. As will be shown in this article, these investigations are not only intended to clarify or improve the procedures in the individual sciences, but also to be of benefit to philosophy and especially to metaphysics. Wundt belongs to the traditional line of inductive metaphysics, whose representatives were of the opinion that metaphysics should be based on the results and methods of the (...) individual sciences. In this sense, Wundt's detailed investigation of the methods of the individual sciences should be understood as a prelude to an inductive metaphysics. By means of a central example, namely the introduction of the concept of causality based on an inference to the best explanation, this article shows how Wundt conceives the construction of a metaphysics based on the foundations of the individual sciences. In his 1912 book _The Problems of Philosophy_, Bertrand Russell advocates an indirect realism with regard to physical objects. Only two years later, in his book _Our Knowledge of the External World_ and the paper “The Relation of Sense-Data to Physics”, he changes his method in philosophy. Instead of inferring the existence of physical objects, he now sets out to construct them out of sense-data. As I will argue in this article, the main argument from _The Problems of Philosophy_ can (...) be rationally reconstructed as an inference to the best explanation which infers to unobservable objects. The main motivation for the new approach in _Our Knowledge of the External World_, on the other hand, is to establish a more direct variant of realism, in particular because Russell became skeptical with regard to inferences to unobservable objects. As I will argue, the resulting theory of the physical world loses so much in simplicity that it becomes an unattractive alternative to his earlier position, and Russell’s reason for rejecting simplicity as a criterion of theory choice turns out to be inconsequential. Kant claims that the understanding prescribes the existence and necessity of empirical laws to nature, while it does not prescribe which particular empirical laws hold. That is to say, the understanding prescribes the general form of nature and the form of the empirical laws without prescribing the material content. But how is this possible? How can the understanding guarantee that there are necessary empirical laws without prescribing particular empirical laws to nature? In this paper, I want to answer this question (...) by analyzing Kant’s argument for the Second Analogy of Experience in combination with an analysis of his conception of actuality. As I want to show, an application of Kant’s conception of actuality to the argument for the Second Analogy not only fills a gap in this argument, but also leads to an explanation of how the understanding can prescribe lawfulness to nature without prescribing particular laws. Open peer commentary on the article “A Defence of Starmaking Constructivism: The Problem of Stuff” by Bin Liu. Abstract: Bin Liu defends a theory he calls “starmaking constructivism,” according to which all features of the world are constructed by us. I will first show that the general way Liu defends and argues for constructivism is strongly reminiscent of the tradition of inductive metaphysics, a tradition that emerged in the mid- and late 19th century and the early 20th century in Germany. (...) I will then highlight an argument from this tradition against phenomenalism and for realism. Then I will argue that this argument is at least in part an objection that also applies to starmaking constructivism, thereby shifting the burden of arguing back to the constructivist’s side. Starting from the problem of evil, Norbert Hoerster argues for an atheistic position. He discusses several historical and current attempts to reconcile the existing evils with the existence of God and comes to the negative conclusion that all of these attempts fail. From this, he concludes that the existing evils speak against the existence of God. In this article I argue that Hoerster's arguments are not sufficient for an atheistic conclusion. Rather, they only strengthen the case for agnosticism, the position (...) according to which we cannot know whether God exists. I want to work out that Hoerster does not recognize this because he does not clearly distinguish the position of agnosticism from the position of atheism, and thereby gives away important potential for differentiation. Philip Kitcher is one of the most distinguished philosophers of our days. Since the rise of philosophy of biology in the 1960s Kitcher has deeply influenced and inspired many of the debates in this field. Among his most important books are The Advancement of Science (1993), In Mendel’s Mirror: Philosophical Reflections on Biology (2003), and Science in a Democratic Society (2011). However, Kitcher’s philosophical interest is not restricted to the philosophy of science. Rather, he has also made groundbreaking contributions to (...) ethics, to the philosophy of religion, to the philosophy of literature, to the philoso-phy of mathematics, and, most recently, to pragmatism. From a general perspective, two features of Kitcher’s work are particu-larly noteworthy. First, in most of his writings it becomes apparent that he takes a naturalistic stance. Kitcher characterizes himself as having an “impulse to naturalism”, which means that he resists the expansionist tendency to invoke entities or processes that are quite different from those studied in the various branches of inquiry (like Platonic forms or other abstract entities, Cartesian egos, and faculties of pure reason). Kitcher has explicated his naturalistic stance in The Naturalists Return (1992) and refined it in various recent works. Second, the philosophical questions that always have urged Kitcher most are questions that matter to human lives. Just to mention a few examples, these are questions like “How do we reconcile our scientific picture of the world with religion?”, “In which way does social practice impact scientist’s search for knowledge?”, or “How do we understand and improve our moral practices?”. In recent years Kitcher has argued that his focus is not merely due to his personal interests. Rather, he thinks that the only philosophical problems that are significant are those whose solution makes a difference to contemporary human life. Philosophers would be wise to focus on these pragmatically relevant kinds of questions, rather than addressing questions that are isolated from real life. In defending this claim, Kitcher expresses his affinity to the pragmatist tradition of Dewey and others. Thus, the second major characteristic of Kitcher’s work is that he takes up a pragmatist stance. Although Kitcher’s naturalistic and pragmatist impulses are discernible in most of his writings, he has only lately started to explicitly defend what he now calls pragmatic naturalism. His work on pragmatic naturalism contains innovative insights into questions about naturalism and pragmatism, while at the same time providing a meta-philosophical, unificatory framework for his longstanding work in various philosophical fields. Kitcher’s paper that is printed in this volume is one of the first publications in which he sets out his idea of pragmatic naturalism. This volume is the result of the 15th Münster Lectures in Philosophy which were hosted by the Department of Philosophy of the University of Münster from the 27th to the 29th of October 2011. The basic idea of the Lectures is to give advanced students of the Department the opportunity to get into discus-sion with important philosophers of our days. In line with what has become by now a venerable tradition, Kitcher gave a lecture to a public audience on the first evening of the Lectures, and he participated in a colloquium on the following two days. At this colloquium, eight groups of advanced students and faculty members presented papers on a wide range of topics from Kitch-er’s work. Both the lecture and the papers are published in this volume. In addition, it contains Kitcher’s detailed replies to the colloquium papers. (shrink)

SummaryIn Ethiopia, despite some recent improvements, the health and nutritional status of children is very poor. A better understanding of the main socioeconomic determinants of child health and nutrition is essential to address the problem and make appropriate interventions. In the present study, an attempt is made to explore the effect of maternal characteristics on the health and nutritional status of under-five children using the 2005 Ethiopian Demographic and Health Survey. The health and nutritional status of children are measured using (...) the two widely used anthropometric indicators height-for-age and weight-for-height. In the ordinary least squares estimation, it is observed that maternal characteristics have a significant impact on child health and nutritional status. The magnitudes of the coefficients, however, are found to slightly increase when maternal education is instrumented in the 2SLS estimation. Moreover, in the quantile regression estimation, the impacts of maternal characteristics are observed to vary between long-term and current child health and nutritional status. (shrink)

This paper argues that the dominant modes of academic address, the conference paper, the journal article, and the monograph, reinforce problematic and exclusionary assumptions concerning what counts as legitimate research, whilst also restricting academic enquiry and impoverishing intellectual life. It makes its case by exploring in some detail the intellectual commitments of one the West’s more wayward 20th century thinkers, Georges Bataille. It suggests that Bataille presents not simply a conceptual armoury (and one among many) for critiquing Western logocentrism from (...) within, but offers an example of what a less domesticated, less stylistically narrowed mode of thinking might look like. This paper examines Michael Young's 1958 dystopia, The Rise of the Meritocracy. In this book, the word 'meritocracy' was coined and used in a pejorative sense. Today, however, meritocracy represents a positive ideal against which we measure the justice of our institutions. This paper argues that, when read in the twenty-first century, Young's dystopia does little to dislodge the implicit appeal of a meritocratic society. It examines the principles of education and administrative justice upon which meritocracy is based, suggesting that (...) since 1958 those principles have changed. Young's warning no longer has any effect on us because the meritocratic system it warns us against has been transformed. (shrink)

Even its most radical critics assume that education is, at core, an incontestable social good. Zusammenfassung Die Rekrutierung von guten Trainern ist eine der zentralen Herausforderungen für Vereine, Verbände und Olympiastützpunkte. Über die strukturellen Bedingungen der Trainerrekrutierung im Spitzensport liegen bislang jedoch nur wenige Erkenntnisse vor. Ziel des vorliegenden Artikels ist es, den Prozess der Trainerrekrutierung im deutschen Spitzensport und die zugrunde liegenden organisationsstrukturellen Bedingungen zu analysieren. Die Analyse zeigt, dass für die Trainerrekrutierung im Spitzensport insbesondere Netzwerke funktional sind. Deren Nachteil liegt darin, dass sie formale Vorgaben aushebeln können und persönlichen Präferenzen ein zum Teil (...) unangemessenes Gewicht verschaffen. Formalisierte Rekrutierungsmittel haben vor diesem Hintergrund vor allem die symbolische Funktion, eine Gerechtigkeitsillusion im Hinblick auf bereits getroffene Entscheidungen zu erzeugen. (shrink)

ZusammenfassungDie Schaffung optimaler Rahmenbedingungen für eine möglichst individualisierte Athletenentwicklung stellt Leistungssportorganisationen vor vielschichtige Herausforderungen. Im vorliegenden Beitrag begründen wir das Design eines Organisationsentwicklungsprogramms zur Förderung der individualisierten Athletenentwicklung, welches derzeit im Netzwerk aus dem Olympiastützpunkt und Bundesstützpunkten der Metropolregion Rhein-Neckar implementiert, evaluiert und optimiert wird. Im Rahmen theoretischer Überlegungen wird zunächst gezeigt, dass Athletenentwicklung ein komplexer biopsychosozialer Prozess ist, der neben der Förderung sportmotorischer Höchstleistung auch die nachhaltige Gesunderhaltung und konstruktive Bewältigung alltäglicher Lebensaufgaben beinhaltet. Vor diesem Hintergrund konzipieren wir individualisierte (...) Athletenentwicklung als Managementaufgabe in Stützpunktnetzwerken des Leistungssports, die einen angemessenen Umgang mit Heterogenität, Interdisziplinarität und Flexibilität erfordert. Zudem wird die praktische Relevanz von partizipativen Ansätzen aus dem Bereich der Organisationsentwicklung verdeutlicht. Auf dieser Basis stellen wir die Konzeption der PRIO-Intervention vor, die im Kern aus drei vernetzten Phasen und einem prozessbegleitenden multi-stakeholder Koordinierungsteam besteht. Dieser Ansatz soll insbesondere den Athletinnen und Athleten die Möglichkeit geben, sich aktiv an der Entwicklung von Lösungen zur Optimierung ihres Stützpunktnetzwerks zu beteiligen. Durch die Evaluierung des Implementierungsprozesses lassen sich zudem neue Erkenntnisse über die Möglichkeiten und Grenzen partizipationsbasierter Interventionen der Organisationsentwicklung im Leistungssport gewinnen. Zusammenfassung Nachwuchsathleten befinden sich in einer Lebensphase, die durch erhebliche soziale, psychische und physiologische Veränderungen charakterisiert ist. Diese Transformationen beeinflussen die sportliche Karriere und die Entwicklung der Athleten grundlegend. Gerade im Spitzensport kann insbesondere der Wachstumsprozess zu spezifischen, bisher in der soziologischen Forschung weitgehend vernachlässigten Problemlagen führen. Der Artikel untersucht Entstehungsbedingungen und die soziale Bedeutung wachstumsbedingter Krisen im Kontext des Nachwuchsleistungssports. Zugrunde liegt eine sozialkonstruktivistische Perspektive auf den Prozess des Aufwachsens und die Körpersozialisation von Nachwuchsathleten. Die biologische und soziale Bedingtheit (...) des Körpers wird als ko-konstruktiv konzeptionalisiert. Ausgehend von qualitativen Interviews und teilnehmenden Beobachtungen im deutschen Nachwuchsleistungssport zeigen sich vier typische Problemlagen: Fehlpassung, Asynchronität, Bezugsgruppenwechsel und Überlastungen. Zusammenfassung Der Begriff,interkultureller Konflikt' wird nicht nur in Medien und Öffentlichkeit, sondern auch in der wissenschaftlichen Diskussion zur Bezeichnung von Auseinandersetzungen verwendet, an denen Menschen mit Migrationshintergrund beteiligt sind. Den Konfliktbeteiligten werden dabei Mentalitätsunterschiede attestiert, die häufig mit Verweis auf kulturelle Differenzen erklärt werden. Der Beitrag liefert Erklärungen dafür, warum solche Auseinandersetzungen im Sport so selbstverständlich als,interkulturelle' Konflikte gekennzeichnet werden. Im Mittelpunkt der konflikt­theoretischen Analyse steht die Frage, wie das,Interkulturelle' zum Topos von Konflikten im Sport wird. Ziel ist es, gängige (...) Annahmen des Diskurses über interkulturelle Konflikte im Sport kritisch zu hinterfragen. Den theoretischen Rahmen hierfür bildet die systemtheoretische Konfliktsoziologie. (shrink)

In times of an omnipresent interest in Hans Blumenberg’s work, this essay investigates motives of a type of philosophy which, in tracing metaphor, myth, rhetoric, and technology, apparently follows one goal: to keep reality at a distance. With a particular eye on a peculiarly forced reading of Kafka, which can be found in Blumenberg’s posthumous convolute about ›Die nackte Wahrheit‹, some contradictions however become apparent which may not only be of theoretical nature but may also be related to the institutional (...) conditions of philosophy in the history of the Federal Republic of Germany, namely that philosophy can ›afford‹ to discuss the matters of truth and reality, as if they were problems by which we are only affected distantly. In the light of war and hunger, which today have become part of our historical present, this essay works towards a very brief critique of Blumenberg as well as of the current interest in his works. Neural network models of memory are notorious for catastrophic interference: Old items are forgotten as new items are memorized (French, 1999; McCloskey & Cohen, 1989). While working memory (WM) in human adults shows severe capacity limitations, these capacity limitations do not reflect neural network style catastrophic interference. However, our ability to quickly apprehend the numerosity of small sets of objects (i.e., subitizing) does show catastrophic capacity limitations, and this subitizing capacity and WM might reflect a common capacity. Accordingly, computational investigations (...) (Knops, Piazza, Sengupta, Eger & Melcher, 2014; Sengupta, Surampudi & Melcher, 2014) suggest that mutual inhibition among neurons can explain both kinds of capacity limitations as well as why our ability to estimate the numerosity of larger sets is limited according to a Weber ratio signature. Based on simulations with a saliency map‐like network and mathematical proofs, we provide three results. First, mutual inhibition among neurons leads to catastrophic interference when items are presented simultaneously. The network can remember a limited number of items, but when more items are presented, the network forgets all of them. Second, if memory items are presented sequentially rather than simultaneously, the network remembers the most recent items rather than forgetting all of them. Hence, the tendency in WM tasks to sequentially attend even to simultaneously presented items might not only reflect attentional limitations, but also an adaptive strategy to avoid catastrophic interference. Third, the mean activation level in the network can be used to estimate the number of items in small sets, but it does not accurately reflect the number of items in larger sets. Rather, we suggest that the Weber ratio signature of large number discrimination emerges naturally from the interaction between the limited precision of a numeric estimation system and a multiplicative gain control mechanism.
