About to Burst: How State Self-Regulation Affects the Enactment of Bullying Behaviors.Charn P. McAllister & Pamela L. Perrewé - 2018 - Journal of Business Ethics 153 (3):877-888.
Past research has demonstrated that employees’ perceptions of abusive supervision are positively associated with the enactment of bullying behaviors. However, an investigation of the factors influencing employees’ decision to bully others at work has yet to be completed. In this study, we propose that the relationship between perceptions of abusive supervision and the enactment of bullying behaviors is mediated by state self-regulation, and that active coping moderates the relationship between state self-regulation and bullying. Further, we analyze how the situational context (...)

Insubordination: Validation of a Measure and an Examination of Insubordinate Responses to Unethical Supervisory Treatment.Jeremy D. Mackey, Charn P. McAllister & Katherine C. Alexander - 2019 - Journal of Business Ethics 168 (4):755-775.
Research that examines unethical interpersonal treatment has received a great deal of attention from scholars and practitioners in recent years due to the remarkable impact of mistreatment in the workplace. However, the literature is incomplete because we have an inadequate understanding of insubordination, which we define as “subordinates’ disobedient behaviors that intentionally exhibit a defiant refusal of their supervisors’ authority.” In our study, we integrate social exchange theory and the advantageous comparison component of moral disengagement within the integrative model of (...)

Victim and Culprit? The Effects of Entitlement and Felt Accountability on Perceptions of Abusive Supervision and Perpetration of Workplace Bullying.Jeremy D. Mackey, Jeremy R. Brees, Charn P. McAllister, Michelle L. Zorn, Mark J. Martinko & Paul Harvey - 2018 - Journal of Business Ethics 153 (3):659-673.
Although workplace bullying is common and has universally harmful effects on employees’ outcomes, little is known about workplace bullies. To address this gap in knowledge, we draw from the tenets of social exchange and displaced aggression theories in order to develop and test a model of workplace bullying that incorporates the effects of employees’ individual differences, perceptions of their work environments, and perceptions of supervisory treatment on their tendencies to bully coworkers. The results of mediated moderation analyses that examine responses (...)

A total of 1918 loci, detected by the hybridization of 938 expressed sequence tag unigenes from 26 Triticeae cDNA libraries, were mapped to wheat homoeologous group 4 chromosomes using a set of deletion, ditelosomic, and nulli-tetrasomic lines. The 1918 EST loci were not distributed uniformly among the three group 4 chromosomes; 41, 28, and 31% mapped to chromosomes 4A, 4B, and 4D, respectively. This pattern is in contrast to the cumulative results of EST mapping in all homoeologous groups, as reported (...)

  7. Model selection and the multiplicity of patterns in empirical data.James W. McAllister - 2007 - Philosophy of Science 74 (5):884-894.
Several quantitative techniques for choosing among data models are available. Among these are techniques based on algorithmic information theory, minimum description length theory, and the Akaike information criterion. All these techniques are designed to identify a single model of a data set as being the closest to the truth. I argue, using examples, that many data sets in science show multiple patterns, providing evidence for multiple phenomena. For any such data set, there is more than one data model that must (...)

Completions of PA: Models and Enumerations of Representable Sets.Alex M. McAllister - 1998 - Journal of Symbolic Logic 63 (3):1063-1082.
We generalize a result on True Arithmetic by Lachlan and Soare to certain other completions of Peano Arithmetic. If $\mathscr{T}$ is a completion of $\mathscr{PA}$, then Rep denotes the family of sets $X \subseteq \omega$ for which there exists a formula $\varphi$ such that for all $n \in \omega$, if $n \in X$, then $\mathscr{T} \vdash \varphi})$ ) and if $n \not\in X$, then $\mathscr{T} \vdash \neg\varphi})$. We show that if $\mathscr{S,J} \subseteq \mathscr{P}$ such that $\mathscr{S}$ is a Scott set, (...)

Beauty and Revolution in Science.James W. McAllister - 1996 - Ithaca: Cornell University Press.
How reasonable and rational can science be when its practitioners speak of "revolutions" in their thinking and extol certain theories for their "beauty"? James W. McAllister addresses this question with the first systematic study of the aesthetic evaluations that scientists pass on their theories. P. A. M. Dirac explained why he embraced relativity by saying, "It is the essential beauty of the theory which I feel is the real reason for believing in it." Dirac's claim seems to belie rationalist (...)

Background: The aim of this study was to investigate associations between demographic and clinical variables and duration of untreated psychosis (DUP) in a sample of cases of psychosis across an adult early intervention in psychosis service and a child and adolescent community team. Method: Cross-sectional baseline data for cases of psychosis across the two teams on the caseload at a given time point were collected, including age of onset, gender, ethnicity, referral route, and DUP. Results: The median DUP across the (...)

    Relativism.James W. McAllister - 2000 - In W. Newton-Smith (ed.), A companion to the philosophy of science. Malden, Mass.: Blackwell. pp. 405–407.
Relativism about a property P is the thesis that any statement of the form “Entity E has P” is ill formed, while statements of the form “E has P relative to S” are well formed, and true for appropriate E and S. Relativism about P therefore entails the claim that P is a relation rather than a one‐place predicate. In the principal forms of relativism, the variable S ranges over cultures, world views, conceptual schemes, practices, disciplines, paradigms, styles, standpoints, or (...)

    Access denied: a reply to Rickabaugh and McAllister.Christopher M. P. Tomaszewski & John W. Rosenbaum - 2018 - International Journal for Philosophy of Religion 83 (2):201-207.
In their recent paper, Brandon Rickabaugh and Derek McAllister object to Paul Moser’s rejection of natural theology on the grounds that Moser is committed to a principle, Seek, which commits Moser to another principle, Access. Access in turn can be rationally motivated for at least some nonbelievers only by the arguments of natural theology. So Moser is in fact committed to the epistemic usefulness of natural theology. In this paper, we show that Seek by itself does not commit one (...)

Moving beyond production: community narratives for good farming.John Strauser & William P. Stewart - forthcoming - Agriculture and Human Values:1-16.
With a vast majority of the land in the Driftless Region of the Midwestern United States dedicated to agricultural production, the future of farming has significant economic, social, recreational, agricultural, and ecological implications. An important literature stream has developed on ways agriculture can change to impact both human and ecological communities positively. In this study, we examine the processes and extent to which community narratives assert and inform regional identities that shape the meaning of being a good farmer. Using a (...)

In Matthew 24, Jesus prophesied to his disciples about ‘wars and rumours of wars’ and other eschatological birth-pangs to prepare them in advance on how they are to be responding to eschatological events as they would be unfolding in the interim of his ascension and his promised Parousia. What then does Jesus mean by enlisting ‘wars and rumours of wars’ in this eschatological era to be functioning as ‘the beginning of birth-pangs’ and how should Christians be responding to wars and (...)

  18. Hume’s Skeptical Logic of Induction.Kenneth P. Winkler - 2016 - In Paul Russell (ed.), The Oxford Handbook of David Hume. Oxford: Oxford University Press.
For Hume, one task of logic is “to explain the principles and operations of our reasoning faculties”; this chapter is a study of his logic of inductive reasoning, as presented in Book I of his Treatise and in the Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding. Like other early modern logics—especially those composed, as Hume’s was, under the influence of Locke—Hume’s logic is descriptive, explanatory, and normative. It also aspires to be revelatory. It is descriptive in documenting how our reasoning actually proceeds, explanatory (...)
