Husserl and the phenomenology of religion have a delicate relationship that combines direct references to religious themes with broader analyses subsumable under the more general phenomenology of consciousness. This paper shows the themes and problems of a Husserlian phenomenological analysis of religious consciousness through an encounter with its elements. Word, Prayer, relationship with the Sacred and Faith are some of the indelible traces of a phenomenology of religious consciousness. The belief, however, is that phenomenology can be spoken of if and (...) only if the themes are addressed through the analysis of consciousness as the method teaches. Thus, an analysis of religious lived-experiences and transcendence (subjective and absolute) is joined by such phenomenologically diriment questions as a possible dichotomy between transcendence of immanence or immanence of transcendence. The idea of the life-world: Life-world is a concept present in various texts about Husserl’s phenomenology. Some interpreters consider it a late and inconsistent concept present in The Crisis of European Sciences and Transcendental Phenomenology. In this paper, I argue that the idea of the life-world had already been thought in Husserl’s early texts such as Ideas II. This idea was firstly named as surrounding world, then world of experience, and finally life-world. However, despite the different nomenclature, the essence of (...) the life-world remains the same throughout his work. The life-world is a priori, transcendent, and co-given. I will analyze each of these characteristics and conclude in favor of a conceptual monism running through Husserl’s work. Keywords: Husserl, life-world, a priori, transcendent, co-given. (shrink)

It is an intimate experience for us to think, to understand and to perceive things as being identical to themselves, and to suppose, consequently, that things are truly “what” they are. Something is always conceived as itself. The given is given full of itself in all its modifications. For instance, I can think or perceive partially some lips, I can see them almost in their whole or in some of their aspects, or just see them disappear. But it does not (...) seem to be possible to think or to perceive a given as almost itself, as an aspect or as part of itself. It is the aim of this work to study the assumptions and conditions for the original position of sameness in experience, just as it occurs in the synthesis of the datum singular and distinct. The polarization of single tone (einstimmig) intentional rays in an αvτó already contains the aporiae peculiar to the experience of the identical, whose revelation shall lead us, on the one hand, to one of the nuclei of the analysis of passive synthesis, and, on the other hand, to point up how critical revision of the numerical or extensional model of self-identity is for the unity of meaning. Then, it will be a question of pointing out the reasons why in a phenomenology of identity, the renunciation of the phenomenological legitimacy of the αvτó as a guarantee for the different positions of identity must be observed. Pour plusieurs raisons, Descartes s'impose à titre d'interlocuteur privilégié de la phénoménologie. Comme Descartes, Husserl poursuit un double objectif avec l'idée de philosophie première : 1) celui d'une science universelle dominant l'ensemble des sciences ; 2) celui de fournir à cette science universelle le fondement qui en justifie le statut. J'examine ici le deuxième objectif.

By the summer of 1913, Husserl had already completed revisions of the Prolegomena to Pure Logic and the first five Investigations for a new edition of his Logical Investigations. The intervening years had seen considerable development in Husserl’s thought, so he attempted to compromise between a merely mechanical reproduction of the original edition and a complete rewriting from the newly attained standpoint of his transcendental phenomenology. The compromise worked fairly well until Husserl came to the Sixth Investigation, “Elements of a (...) Phenomenological Clarification of Knowledge.” The texts collected in the volume under review were produced during the second half of 1913 and reflect Husserl’s attempts at compromise. A companion volume is forthcoming which will contain his efforts, in late 1913 and early 1914, to write an entirely new version. The excellent Editor’s Introduction explains the chronology of Husserl’s failure. In 1913 a truncated second edition appeared without the Sixth Investigation, and in 1921, yielding to pressure from Heidegger and others, Husserl brought out a second edition of the Sixth Investigation which included no trace of his earlier revisions. The long, complex editorial history of Hegel’s lectures on the philosophy of religion comes in a sense to a happy end now with this impressive penultimate German edition. The final, historical-critical Gesammelte Werke edition will apparently not be completed before the mid-1990’s. Nevertheless the present edition’s German test as critically secured by Walter Jaeschke in conjunction with Ricardo Ferrara and Peter C. Hodgson provides truly reliable access to Hegel’s lectures of 1821, 1824, 1827, and to a lesser extent of 1831 (...) as well. The present edition and particularly the first volume will be examined here in four steps: 1) historical context, 2) the first volume as a whole, 3) editorial principles concerning and remarks on each of Hegel’s four lecture series, and 4) further research opportunities opened by this edition. In his last work, "Crisis of the European Sciences and Transcendental Phenomenology", Edmund Husserl formulated a radical new approach to phenomenological philosophy. Unlike his previous works, in the "Crisis" Husserl embedded this formulation in an ambitious reflection on the essence and value of the idea of rational thought and culture, a reflection that he considered to be an urgent necessity in light of the political, social, and intellectual crisis of the interwar period. In this book, James Dodd pursues an interpretation (...) of Husserl's text that emphasizes the importance of the problem of the origin of philosophy, as well as advances the thesis that, for Husserl, the "crisis of reason" is not a contingent historical event, but a permanent feature of a life in reason generally. Mit der im vorliegenden Band der Husserliana Materialien veröffentlichten Vorlesung über "Natur und Geist" vom Sommersemester 1919 sind nun nach den Ideen II und der "Natur und Geist"-Vorlesung von 1927 alle drei großen Auseinandersetzungen Husserls mit der "Natur und Geist"-Problematik in Husserliana-Ausgaben zugänglich gemacht.

Herder spent two years studying at the University of Königsberg and attended four courses taught by Kant, who at the time had just published his first really important philosophical writing on the "Only Possible Proof of the Demonstration of God's Existence." Herder's notes are probably the only ones preserved from any lecture by Kant in that decade. The texts on logic and mathematics are short and insignificant. The pages on metaphysics are devoted to mostly psychological inquiries. Herder's notes are most (...) complete on "Practical Philosophy after Hutcheson and Baumgarten" where Kant analyzes not only purely ethical questions, but treats at some length religious issues as well. Even though these notes do not revolutionize our understanding of the genesis of Kant's philosophy, they do help us to retrace in more detail his road to the Dissertation of 1770 and to the critical writings. The editor's introduction is brief but good, and the bibliographical notes are abundant and excellent.—M. J. V. (shrink)

For these two half-volumes comprising volume 25 of the Akademie-Ausgabe the Kant-Forschung has indeed waited long. They contain the critical edition of several student notebooks from Kant’s lectures on anthropology, the texts of which have already been available as preprints on the internet, at the site of Brandt’s and Stark’s Kant-Archiv in Marburg, since 1996. Volume 25 is the first volume to appear after a pause of fifteen years, given that the last volume before this, volume 29, the one with (...) the Ergänzungen to the Metaphysikvorlesungen, appeared in 1983.
