Acknowledging caregivers’ vulnerability in the managment of challenging behaviours to reduce control measures in psychiatry.Jean Lefèvre-Utile, Marjorie Montreuil, Amélie Perron, Aymeric Reyre & Franco Carnevale - 2022 - Nursing Ethics 29 (3):758-779.
Background:The management of challenging behaviours in inpatient with intellectual disability and/or autism spectrum disorders can lead to an escalation of control measures. In these complex situations where patients have an intellectual disability/autism spectrum disorder accompanied by a psychiatric comorbidity, the experiences of caregivers related to the crisis management have rarely been studied.Purpose:This study examined the moral experiences of caregivers related to challenging behaviours’ management and alternatives to control measures.Research design:Using Charles Taylor’s hermeneutic framework, a 2-month focused ethnography with a (...)

Charles de Bovelles's treatise on the regular polyhedra (Paris, 1511).P. M. Sanders - 1984 - Annals of Science 41 (6):513-566.
The mathematical works of the French philosopher Charles de Bovelles have received little attention from historians of scientific thought. At the University of Paris, Bovelles studied under Jacques Lefèvre d'Étaples, sharing with him a high regard for the Christian Neoplatonic philosophy of Nicholas of Cusa. One aspect of Cusanus's philosophy was particularly favoured by Lefèvre and Bovelles: the use of geometrical symbolism to provide mathematical guidance to the divine. While Lefèvre was preparing an edition of Cusanus's (...)

    Aristotle on Mind and the Senses. [REVIEW]A. H. D. - 1979 - Review of Metaphysics 32 (3):557-558.
The seventh of the triennial Symposia Aristotelica was devoted to studies of Aristotle’s two major psychological treatises, the De anima and the Parva naturalia. All of the papers at that conference are presented here in revised form. In addition, the four papers not originally presented in either English or French have been translated into English for this volume. Perhaps the best way to present an initial sense of the range of topics is to list the table of contents: S. Mansion, (...)

Political Theory and International Relations.Charles R. Beitz - 1979 - Princeton: Princeton University Press.
Charles Beitz rejects two highly influential conceptions of international theory as empirically inaccurate and theoretically misleading. In one, international relations is a Hobbesian state of nature in which moral judgments are entirely inappropriate, and in the other, states are analogous to persons in domestic society in having rights of autonomy that insulate them from external moral assessment and political interference. Beitz postulates that a theory of international politics should include a revised principle of state autonomy based on the justice (...)

Life online during the pandemic : How university students feel about abrupt mediatization.Szymon Zylinski, Charles H. Davis & Florin Vladica - forthcoming - Communications.
The COVID-19 pandemic caused university education to transition from face-to-face contacts to virtual learning environments. Young adults were forced to live an entirely new life online, without valuable and enjoyable social interaction. We examined subjective perspectives towards life online during the pandemic. We identified four viewpoints about life mediated by computers. Two viewpoints express “struggling”: Viewpoint 1 (Angry, Depressed and Overwhelmed), and Viewpoint 3 (Restricted to and Overwhelmed by Virtuality). A third feeling-state conveys experiences of “surviving”: Viewpoint 4 (Isolated and (...)

  31. Implicit racial bias and epistemic pessimism.Charles Lassiter & Nathan Ballantyne - 2017 - Philosophical Psychology 30 (1-2):79-101.
Implicit bias results from living in a society structured by race. Tamar Gendler has drawn attention to several epistemic costs of implicit bias and concludes that paying some costs is unavoidable. In this paper, we reconstruct Gendler’s argument and argue that the epistemic costs she highlights can be avoided. Though epistemic agents encode discriminatory information from the environment, not all encoded information is activated. Agents can construct local epistemic environments that do not activate biasing representations, effectively avoiding the consequences of (...)

CONSIDERATIONS of public policy often focus on individual problematic situations in an ad hoc manner without discernment of their relations to each other, to the context within which they arose, or to the consequences that might ensue from alternative responses. Needed is a coherent set of clearly articulated principles which bring to political controversies of our time a unified perspective within which questions may be asked, discriminations made, relations perceived and priorities established. If a prime concern in seeking out such (...)

This paper deals with Lacan’s reading of The visible and the invisible in his seminal Les quatres concepts fundamentaux de la psychanalyse in order to study the terms in which he reconsiders the psychoanalytical conception of instinct or drive according to Merleau-Ponty’s analysis of the structure of sight.

Metaknowledge may or may not facilitate knowledge and performance.Charles P. Shimp - 2003 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 26 (3):354-355.
Metaknowledge may not always facilitate acquisition of knowledge or performance of complex tasks. A pigeon, for example, depending on the task, can report what it is doing even if it cannot perform the task well, and it can fail to report what it is doing when it performs the task well (Shimp 1982; 1983).

Toward a deconstruction of the metaphor of behavioral momentum.Charles P. Shimp - 2000 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 23 (1):111-112.
The metaphor of “behavioral momentum” exemplifies modernism at its best and follows in the wake of countless other applications of Newtonian mechanics and “the machine metaphor” to virtually every aspect of the human condition. Modernism, however, has fallen on hard times. Some of the chief reasons why are implicit in the target article by Nevin & Grace.
