Kuala Lumpur is a diverse city representing many different religions and nationalities. Recent government policy has actively promoted unity and cohesion throughout the city; and the country of Malaysia, with the implementation of a programme called 1Malaysia. In this book, the authors investigate the aims of this programme – predominantly to unify the Malaysian society – and how these objectives resonate in the daily spatial practices of the city’s residents. -/- This book argues that elements of urban infrastructure could work (...) as an essential mediator ‘beyond community’, allowing inclusive social structures to be built, despite cultural and religious tensions existing within the city. It builds on the premise of an empirical study which explores the ways in which different communities use the same spaces, supported through the implementation of a theoretical framework which looks at both Western and Islamic conceptualisations of the notion of community. There is no direct, constant relationship between the anthropological and cultural aspects of modernity. Anthropologically modern peoples display a certain heterogeneity that is not unconnected with earlier peoples, and the culture produced by modern humans, which is also heterogeneous, is differentiated diachronically and according to territory. Though paleogenetic research seems to point us to a single, African source for modern peoples, who had replaced the pre-sapiens populations in Eurasia, this view is not completely proven or accepted. On the other hand, (...) paleo-genetic research has contributed to our relinquishing the hypothesis of a multiregional ‘total continuity’ of local pre-modern populations in the Old World. Indeed the theory of a partial replacement, by a migration ‘out of Africa’, appears to be getting increasingly plausible. This article deals with the problems of the origins of modern man from the points of view of anthropological, paleogenetic, paleoenvironmental and cultural approaches. (shrink)

Dialectical contradictions influence organizational processes in distinct ways and create a unique dynamics in terms of leadership process in entrepreneurialorganizations. We integrate research from charismatic, transformational, and organizational literature, as well as entrepreneurship literature, to create a generalized model of entrepreneurial leadership that is descriptively robust and conceptually distinct from existing concepts. We focus specifically on visionary, transformational, and motivational contradictions of entrepreneurial leadership and conclude by discussing the implications of organizational reconciliation of these three contradictions for leadership research and (...) practice. Humeanism about laws has been famously accused of the explanatory circularity by David Armstrong and Tim Maudlin, since the Humean laws hold in virtue of their instances and, at the same time, scientifically explain those very instances. Barry Loewer argued that the circularity challenge rests on an equivocation: in his view, once the metaphysical explanation is properly distinguished from the scientific explanation, the circularity vanishes. However, Marc Lange restored the circularity by appealing to his transitivity principle, which connects the two (...) types of explanation. Lange’s transitivity principle has been widely discussed and criticised in the literature. In view of counterexamples, Lange refi ned both the principle, by taking into account the contrastive nature of explanation, and the requirement of prohibition on self-explanation. Recently, Michael Hicks has developed a new strategy for defending Humeanism about laws from the refined circularity challenge, critically appealing to the contrastive nature of both explanations and meta-explanations. In the last two decades, major cities in Malaysia have witnessed a spate of urban redevelopment including commercial and retail complexes, and residential estates. The current urban transformations taking place in Malaysian cities are mainly market-driven and characterized by fast-track development with a strong priority on the road infrastructure. This is a typical example of an intensive property-led development that is becoming a central driver of the national economy. This article provides a deeper understanding of the complexity of urban development (...) in Malaysia. Here, the major aim is to understand the Malaysian cities' transitions in the trajectory of their colonial past, national identity, multi-cultural community, culture, and religion. Focusing on South East Asian urbanism, this article determines how internal and external forces and global trends such as neoliberalism and property-led development affect the transformation of urban landscapes and expansions in Malaysia. The outcomes of this paper will indicate how much property-led development and globalisation have affected the traditional and tropical climate-responsive urban environment in Malaysia. It will also identify sustainable design and planning measures that should be implemented in the cities of Malaysia to combat the ill-effects of globalisation. (shrink)

Scholars have long noticed a similarity of motifs between Catullus’ Carmen 63 and the fifth book of the Odyssey, where the story of Odysseus’ captivity on Ogygia is narrated. A detailed analysis of the poems shows that Catullus wanted the reader to see in this Homeric episode a kind of matrix for the interpretation of Attis’ sojourn at Cybele. The discovery of this dependence casts a light on some of the hitherto proposed interpretations of Carmen 63.

Perhaps in last few centuries not any big theory has resulted in so much opposition as Darwinian theory of evolution. Within this theory, claim that _Homo sapiens _evolved from animal ancestors, namely apes, is undoubtedly the most controversial issue. Long tradition of teaching by Church that a pair of first people was created in short time in Eden Garden is in contradiction to discoveries of biology, including paleontology. If God exists, which is not the research subject of science, he created (...) human beings by a long process of biological Darwinian evolution followed by shorter process of non-Darwinian cultural evolution. Biologist must treat _Homo sapiens _as just one more species with long phylogeny, albeit special species characterized by brains of enormous size, with well-developed neocortex and very special mental traits being the consequence of such brain. The paper considers selection forces toward increase of this extremely expensive organ, draining at least 20% of energy. The main idea is that a series of positive feedbacks were responsible for the development of brain, correlated increase of intelligence and development of culture. Although no great breakthrough is required for such mode of evolution, energetic constrain limiting brain size was present through large part of our evolution, which was first broken by using primitive tools for cutting meat and grinding down seeds, then by thermal processing of food. The new constrain on skull size, and correlated brain size, that is the danger of death of both mother and child during childbirth, has been partly relieved by shifting large part of brain development to postnatal period. Resulting very long childhood was a prerequisite to cultural development of our species. (shrink)

Telewizja określana jest jako najważniejszy środek masowego przekazu a zarazem najważniejszy wynalazek XX w., który - według socjologów - zrewolucjonizował m.in. nasz styl życia oraz sposób percepcji informacji a jednocześnie ma ogromne możliwości kształtowania naszych poglądów i opinii. Powstanie telewizji nie jest związane - jak mogłoby się to wydawać - z okresem powojennym, lecz jest wynalazkiem, dla którego przesłanki technologiczne zostały stworzone już w połowie XIX w. Szersze znaczenie zdobyła ona jednak dopiero w latach trzydziestych w Niemczech jako potencjalny instrument (...) propagandy faszystów. W roku 1935 rozpoczęto po raz pierwszy nadawanie regularnego programu telewizyjnego, a w następnym przeprowadzono pierwszą relację telewizyjną z Olimpiady Sportowej w Berlinie. W okresie powojennym początki telewizji w Niemczech datują się na rok 1954, kiedy otwarto pierwszą publiczną stację telewizyjną pod nazwą ARD. W roku 1963 utworzono drugą publiczną stację telewizyjną ZDF. Powołaniu tej stacji towarzyszyły burzliwe dyskusje społeczne i polityczne. Po pierwszym okresie ostrej konkurencji obie stacje telewizyjne rozpoczęły współpracę między sobą i to zarówno na płaszczyźnie programowej, jak i produkcyjnej. Kolejnym wielkim krokiem w rozwoju telewizji było utworzenie sieci prywatnych stacji radiowych i telewizyjnych. Ich powstanie było możliwe dzięki nowej technologii przekaźnikowej, tzn. techniki satelitarnej oraz odpowiednim regulacjom prawnym. Pierwszym takim programem była - istniejąca zresztą do dzisiaj - stacja SAT 1, która rozpoczęła nadawanie swojego programu w styczniu 1995 r. Po niej powstały lawinowo następne, takie jak: RTL plus, PRO 7, Tele 5, VOX, VIVA i wiele innych. Socjologowie kultury i kulturoznawcy podkreślają, że telewizja ma ogromne możliwości przekazywania widzom informacji przede wszystkim z zakresu szeroko rozumianej kultury. Zastępuje kino, koncert i teatr. Jest oczywiście rzeczą dyskusyjną i otwartą rozpatrywanie jakości artystycznej poszczególnych programów, jednak niezmienny jest fakt, że głównym źródłem naszych informacji przede wszystkim politycznych, społecznych, ale także i kulturalnych jest telewizja. Specjaliści przewidują dalszy jej intensywny rozwój w XXI w. i to zarówno na płaszczyźnie technologicznej, jak i też programowej. (shrink)

Mass media, także i w Republice Federalnej Niemiec, zyskują coraz większe znaczenie w informowaniu i funkcjonowaniu społeczeństw. Najstarszym środkiem masowego przekazu społecznego jest prasa. Pierwsze gazety na świecie zostały wydane na początku XVII w. w Wolfenbiittel i Strasburgu, a więc na ówczesnych terenach niemieckich. Nosiły one tytuły: "Aviso" i "Relationen". Aktualnie wydaje się w Niemczech 30 milionów egzemplarzy prasy codziennej. Zwiększa się także liczba gazet zawierających programy telewizyjne oraz czasopism kobiecych. Mediami XX w. są niewątpliwie radio i telewizja. Pierwsze audycje (...) radiowe były nadawane w Niemczech w roku 1923. Nowy wynalazek zyskał wkrótce duże uznanie i już w rok później w Niemczech było zarejestrowanych ponad pół miliona odbiorników. Aktualnie w RFN działa ok. 11 radiostacji publicznych i ponad 200 prywatnych. Powstanie prywatnych stacji radiowych i telewizyjnych było możliwe dzięki rozwiązaniom technologicznym lat osiemdziesiątych. Telewizja była znana już przed II wojną światową. W roku 1935 były nadawane regularne audycje telewizyjne w Niemczech. W rok później telewizja niemiecka transmitowała igrzyska olimpijskie, które odbywały się wtedy w Berlinie. Po II wojnie światowej stworzono w RFN dwie publiczne stacje telewizyjne: ARD i ZDF. Od połowy lat osiemdziesiątych poważną konkurencją dla publicznych stacji telewizyjnych jest telewizja prywatna, która przekazuje swoje programy za pośrednictwem transmisji satelitarnych i łączy kablowych. Do najbardziej znanych niemieckich stacji telewizji prywatnej, odbieranych także i w Polsce należą: RTL i SATl, a także Pro Sieben, Vox, RTL2, Premiere, Viva itd. Przyszłość elektronicznych mediów audiowizualnych, nie tylko w RFN, ale także i w innych krajach jest ogromna i rozwija się niezwykle intensywnie i dynamicznie, zaspokajając głównie potrzeby ludyczne społeczeństw. Using E. Wolicka book "Consideration on Kant" as an anchoring point, the author investigates the conditions under which 'kingdom of ends' can successfully play a role of institution of culture, i.e. be translated into rules of action and empirical facts in the sphere of every day life and history.

The metabolic organization of both normal and malignant prostate cellular phenotypes involves some unusual and surprising features. In particular, both conditions exhibit ratios of NADH/NAD+ and NADPH/NADP+ charactersitic of high oxidative states despite a chronic shortage of O2 in both conditions. In this paper, we observe that, in prostate cancer cells, the oxidizing power of the fatty acid synthesis (FAS) pathway is so large that redox is stabilized more favorably (more oxidized) than in normal prostate cells. This FAS‐facilitated redox improvement (...) occurs despite the fact that malignant cells are more O2 limited and therefore express more hypoxia inducible factor 1 (HIF1) and express hypoxia‐regulated genes more robustly. This unusual metabolic situation clearly separates direct regulatory effects of redox balance from secondary effects of hypoxia per se. The physiological significance of the FAS pathway is thus the harnessing of its oxidizing power for improving redox balance despite conditions of more extreme hypoxia. Similar hypoxia defense strategies are found in animal species that are unusually tolerant to oxygen lack. Our hypothesis is that the metabolic organization in the “low zinc, low citrate” phenotype reflects an hypoxia‐defense adaptation geared toward redox balance, with prostate cancer cells being relatively more oxidized, even if more hypoxic, than normal prostate cells. Recognition and understanding of these redox balancing and hypoxia defense functions may lead to new intervention strategies by developing new intracellular targets for prostate cancer therapy. In this paper, we consider how the four key team emergent states for team learning identified by Bell, Kozlowski and Blawath (2012), namely psychological safety, goal orientation, cohesion, and efficacy, operate as a system that produces the team’s learning climate (TLC). Using the language of systems dynamics, we conceptualize TLC as a stock that rises and falls as a joint function of the psychological safety, goal orientation, cohesion, and efficacy that exists in the team. The systems approach highlights aspects of (...) TLC management that are traditionally overlooked, such as the simultaneous influence of and feedback between the four team emergent states and the inertia that TLC can have as a result. The management of TLC becomes an issue of controlling the system rather than each state as an independent force, especially because changing one part of the system will also affect other parts in sometimes unintended and undesirable ways. Thus the value is to offer a systems view on the leadership function of team monitoring with regards to team emergent states, which we term team state monitoring. This view offers promising avenues for future research as well as practical wisdom. It can help leaders remember that TLC represents an equilibrium that needs balance, in addition to pointing to the various ways in which they can influence such equilibrium. (shrink)
