The Use of Case Studies to Instruct Qualities of Leadership in a Character Education Program.Minnie N. Blackwell, WendeIl J. Rodgers & Stephenie M. Hewett - 2005 - Inquiry: Critical Thinking Across the Disciplines 24 (3):21-27.
The case study method offers a hands-on inquiry based method for teaching leadership traits. With this in mind, the case study method is used to provide opportunities for middle school students to analyze a situation and the actions of the case study charactcrs and to identify leadership behaviors. The use of the case study method allows instructors to teach character education to this group of middle school students by promoting the use of critical thinking skills through small group discussions and (...)

Genetic Research and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians.Emma Kowal, Glenn Pearson, Chris S. Peacock, Sarra E. Jamieson & Jenefer M. Blackwell - 2012 - Journal of Bioethical Inquiry 9 (4):419-432.
While human genetic research promises to deliver a range of health benefits to the population, genetic research that takes place in Indigenous communities has proven controversial. Indigenous peoples have raised concerns, including a lack of benefit to their communities, a diversion of attention and resources from non-genetic causes of health disparities and racism in health care, a reinforcement of “victim-blaming” approaches to health inequalities, and possible misuse of blood and tissue samples. Drawing on the international literature, this article reviews the (...)

In addition to general coverage of the discipline, this volume attempts a more challenging and complementary accompaniment to many familiar narratives about free will. In order to map out some directions such accompaniment will take, in this introduction we anchor the thirty (...)

The purpose of this volume, the editor says, is to meet “the need of the beginning student [of law] to get a handle quickly on the vast and diverse theoretical landscape that is the first-year experience” in law school. It is conceived as a supplement to case books and other first-year materials. In this, it is quite successful. Most of the contrib-utors have done a fine job canvassing a number of ideas or positions; the most successful essays are extremely helpful (...)

We report here on the set of complete proofs of Volumes I and II of Whitehead and Russell’s Principia Mathematica newly acquired by the Bertrand Russell Archives. These proof sheets, marked with a number of corrections, were likely bound for Russell by Cambridge University Press, though not exactly the same as the first edition. We assess the information to be gained from the texts and the corrections, most significantly around *110 in Vol. II and the lost dot of the empty (...)

For several decades, researchers have debated whether attention is required for consciousness or not. Throughout this time, three particular paradigms — inattentional blindness, change blindness, and the attentional blink — have been extensively used to examine this relationship. In this chapter, we highlight many of the key findings that have been discovered using these paradigms, and discuss what these findings have taught us about the role attention plays in perceptual consciousness.

Structures Supporting Virtuous Moral Agency: An Empirical Enquiry.Dirk Vriens, Riki A. M. de Wit & Claudia Gross - forthcoming - Journal of Business Ethics:1-28.
It has been argued that organizational structures (the way tasks are defined, allocated, and coordinated) can influence moral agency in organizations. In particular, low values on different structural parameters (functional concentration, specialization, separation, and formalization) are said to foster an organizational context (allowing for relating to the goals and output of the organization, moral deliberation, and social connectedness) that is conducive to moral agency. In this paper, we investigate the relation between the organizational structure and moral agency in the case (...)

Words form a fundamental basis for our understanding of linguistic practice. However, the precise ontology of words has eluded many philosophers and linguists. A persistent difficulty for most accounts of words is the type-token distinction [Bromberger, S. 1989. “Types and Tokens in Linguistics.” In Reflections on Chomsky, edited by A. George, 58–90. Basil Blackwell; Kaplan, D. 1990. “Words.” Aristotelian Society Supplementary Volume LXIV: 93–119]. In this paper, I present a novel account of words which differs from the atomistic and (...)

The commentaries cover a wide range of issues, including the logic and assumptions of CLASH, the evidence in support of CLASH, and other possible causes of aggression and violence (e.g., wealth, income inequality, political circumstances, historic circumstances, pathogen stress). Some commentaries also provide data relevant to CLASH. Here we clarify the logic and assumptions of CLASH (...)

Kurt Godel, the greatest logician of our time, startled the world of mathematics in 1931 with his Theorem of Undecidability, which showed that some statements in mathematics are inherently "undecidable." His work on the completeness of logic, the incompleteness of number theory, and the consistency of the axiom of choice and the continuum theory brought him further worldwide fame. In this introductory volume, Raymond Smullyan, himself a well-known logician, guides the reader through the fascinating world of Godel's incompleteness theorems. The (...)

The main purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between flow experience and goal orientation theory, as well as, the differences in flow experience based on the orthogonal model of goal orientation theory. Two hundred and seventy eight athletes completed the Task and Ego Orientation Sport Questionnaire based on how they usually feel. The Flow State Scale was completed thirty minutes after an important competition, along with the challenge-skill ratings, based on how athletes felt during the particular competition. (...)
